I think that works for P2 largely because P2 is way more linear. It doesn't take a year or so to finish. Hell, who even really knows how long it takes. You just go from one place to another. I think a longer, less linear game (granted, they're still really linear, just with much more player choice as to when to do things) benefits from more party members.

Sure, you can make their SLs cover that, but that would feel very disconnected, as Social Links normally are optional and thus they don't reflect in the main plot.

Well, the point is that a longer game has far more space to do that in. Too few players and you're left with the same people bouncing off each other non-stop. And making them extremely plot relevant isn't really necessary. You just need to make them fit within the group.

I think I read some Hashino interview where he said Persona 5 will be more about different stories instead of just one big overarching plot. If that's true, I think it would be a good way to introduce and deal with different party members.

Also, maybe we wont have a navigator. I just had an idea about the heists/main dungeons.
We have time until some fixed date to obtain information about the dungeon (Social Links, plot events, etc...) and, according with the player's actions, we get some information like the floor's maps, enemy's weaknesses, etc... , Basicallu, kinda like Fate/Extra does with the enemy servants.
