Dominions is a fantasy turn-based strategy game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a strategy game.

>the severity of the horror attack depends on what they're casting. If you put up a big global, the caster better be an immortal and hopefully something like a demilich that gets one shot, because it's not going to beat the Eater of Gods. If it's forging a 10 gem item, it's going to go up against a handful of lesser horrors and a water bottle might be enough.
You can get a doom horror on a low cost item and you can get lesser horrors while casting globals.
Gemcost matters, but to a limited extent. Luck and chassis matter more in my experience, big casters tend to be heroes and gods and as such tend to attract things made to fuck up heroes and gods. Almost all doom horror attacks I've seen happened on special chassis.
Even then the chance to attract a doom horror is maybe 1 out of 6 or at least well bellow 50%.

Horrormarks also snowball heavily and seem to increase the chance of bad horrors arriving, a few horrormarks on god almost guarantee you a doom horror in a very near future.
Since horroramark attacks and AC horror attacks are separate encounter, you can easily get two of them on the same turn if you survive the first one.

For the most part I wouldn't recommend crafting small things or anything at all with important mages unless you are immortal or have a few alternative horrorsolutions that you can trust AI to cast.

That's just my personal experience and testing though.
>>
>>135148092
Ah, I used a Demon Lord to cast crumble and I got Abomination of Desolation. Thankfully he banished it before it did too much damage.
>>
>>135148092

I used a yaksha to get another yaksha and instead got Kurgi.

Pretty sure it's the number of gems.

Meanwhile small item crafts and spell casts are not getting attacked, 1 lesser horror attack so far.
>>
>>135146024

Why would you not have extra. What if one catches a magic duel or an arrow or an assassin or kurgi. Always have extra slaves.

>I used a yaksha to get another yaksha and instead got Kurgi.
>Pretty sure it's the number of gems.
You can get anything on any cast.
I've gotten 6 globals cast through AC, a single one that got doom horror was a hero cast. Most of them were just lesser horrors, that's on 50+ gem casts.
I've gotten kurgi on a 5-10 gem crafting, twice out of maybe a hundred casts within that game. At the same i've gotten multiple doom horrors on an unmarked immortal tartarian caster (demilich) in the exact same game.
I've gotten normal horrors on 30-40 gem artifacts/big boosters crafted by tarts.
I've gotten elemental nobility and national heroes mauled by hunter of heroes without having a heroic trait or being in hallf of fame.

I'm entierly sure there's more to it than just having a lot of gems invested. Gems invested rig the odds and on wish you are very likely to get raped by kurgi, but horror pool is affected by more than gems. Chassis certainly and scales most likely.

>Meanwhile small item crafts and spell casts are not getting attacked
Chance to get attacked is definitely based on the cost, 3 gem items have like 20% chance at worst.
>>
I find myself with +8 earth income as Vanarus, with no earth caster higher than E1. But I do have a few Boots of Earth and Dwarven Hammers already.
Any ideas what I should do with them? Earth Gem Alchemy or transmuting them kinda seems like a waste.
Rejuv items also seem unnecessary at this point in the game.

Luckily my Vampire Lord managed to blink next to it and kill it before the horror got any attacks/spells in.

Does it get any worse than this?
>>
>>135152781
No, unless you're so new you haven't even tried singleplayer yet. (if you are that new, play a few singleplayer games first, so you get the hang of the UI and everything)

Firstly, you won't get better without multiplayer.

Second, most dominions players are bad. If you're willing to fight to the end and not suddenly abandon because your situation looks bad, you'll likely end up doing alright.

The games at the top of the thread pretty much are noob only. The vets (of which there are not many) are all playing the natgen and meme games. We should concentrate on filling the games that are still waiting for pretenders, rather than arbitrarily starting new games without filling any of them.

As the battle starts, Asphodel casts foul vapors, quagmire, iron bane and darkness in the first two turns, which has been a fairly effective strategy against Eriu and Pelagia (although I think Eriu is a new player given how his battles have gone and Pelagia didn't bring enough troops to win the major battle he fought with asphodel)

Asphodel begins the chaff spamming with horde of skeletons and swarm. At this point, I've put up Grip of winter (didn't help) and The Ravenous Swarm (also didn't help). My Gygja's are tied into a skratti communion battery, and they all have regeneration and poison resistance, so foul vapors doesn't really do anything to them.

A carrion lord that asphodel has given thug items to (fire brand, vine shield, some armour) gets swarmed by the skeletons coming from both sides. At this point, there's no living troops on either side except for a few berserking gamhirdings. I also put up relief at some point, which also didn't have any meaningful impact.

As the battle continues, my side of the field slowly completely fills up with skeletons, because skratti communion batteries with an n9 shoud and personal regeneration are really, really strong, and the gygja's never stop casting. Despite that, the trickle of skeletons coming from Asphodel is enough to plug the gate.

After a while, with the stalemate at the gate occuring, there's so many skeletons on the field that they start spawning inside the enemy fort and attacking asphodel's skeletons defending the gate. This is quite silly, but it works and the skeletons get enough of a foothold to break into asphodel's fort. The skeletons next to the inside wall are ones that are spawning inside the fort but belong to me.

As an aside, Manikins happen to be one of the few types of undead that aren't resistant to cold, so I thought I was being jolly clever by casting grip of winter and hoping his mages would all freeze to death. The most it does is freeze up a couple of mages every so often, of course.

I've said this before, but one of the biggest issues with /domg/ is that it doesn't really any distinction between good players and bad players. And you can never make that distinction even if you wanted to, because the majority of games played are anonymous. As a result, if you're even just a little below average in skill, your chances to win drop to almost zero since it's just a handful of good players that win like 90% of the games here.
>>
>>135171048

Wrt. Eriu, yeah, one of her first two games.

As for me, extra bodies aren't exactly easy to come by as Pelagia. I tried with what I had, but even cleansing water spam just didn't do enough to stem the skeleton tide. Mother Oak allowed Asphodel a grotesque amount of skellyspammers.

In hindsight, should've said fuck it and gone for full-battlefield-evocations, but eh. My first time with an evocation-heavy nation.

When you're using an awake expander, is there any way to know for sure a non-throne province won't have mages? Sometimes there are 2 or 3 skelespammers in your typical "archers and light infantry" province that will totally wreck your day, and it's not feasible to ping every single province you're going to expand to.

5 games is far too small a sample size to judge your skill by, but that's still pretty huge. Assuming 6+ players per game, the chance of every having a 60% win rate is pretty much zero unless you're significantly better than the people you're playing against.

>Doesn't seem that hard to get a win . . .
Consider that for every win you got, everyone else in the game got a loss. Yeah, it is very hard to get a win for most people.

>>
>>135188978
Either way, if you can keep up a 60% winrate that definitely puts you on the "handful of good players" side, which just proves the original point.

60% is an extremely significant winrate, considering /domg/ games tend to have between 6 and 12 players on average. If all players were of more or less equal skill you'd expect winrates of around 10-15% maybe, but right now it's a small minority with high winrates that collectively win almost all games, while the majority is guys like >>135186120 who play many games without ever winning anything.

The only way to fix this is by creating more games only for good players or only for newbies/bad players. That way the good players can get an actual challenge, and the bad players have a better chance to learn without getting curbstomped every game. Unfortunately, there's pretty much zero interest in doing things this way because the good players love their win ratio too much and the bad players are afraid to admit they're shit.
>>
>>135189673

>>
>>135189801

>>
>>135190242

>>
>>135190090

>>
>>135190393

>>

>>
>>135190448
I found a good source of communion slaves (lizard shaman) that allowed me to cast the big buff spells.

Also it was on urrapparrand, and I got the spot. If you've played on that imbalanced piece of shit, you'll know what I mean.
>>
>>135190448
With the right bless, you can spam Ancestral Spirits as a ghetto skelly spam. That + spells that your big mages can cast on their own (you can put up many good battlefield spells like arrow fend, wind guide, flaming arrows, and mass protection without a communion, if you get the right randoms) and you have some very worthwhile mage support. Also, many of the situational battlefield spells are pretty intuitive - if your opponent is using fire elementals, cast fire resistance. Finally, he said that he was relying on diplomacy to get an edge, so combine a strong early game with that and it's entirely possible that he avoided fights where he didn't have a significant gold advantage, which makes it entirely possible to win even with suboptimal mage use

Xibalban expansion is actually hugely slowed by indy strength 9, especially in farms. It'll still be crazy, but we might have just been saved, provided he is dealt with quickly, before he goes from bats to demons.

All he needs is a few forests to shit out those bats fast enough to make up for his massive losses and he'll still be expanding faster than ayone this side of W9 Pangaea.

A flying army from province Y attacks adjacent province Z. A non-flying army from province Z attacks province Y. Do they meet in the middle and fight? Does it depend?

What does it depend on?
>>
>>135198343
It depends. Two very small armies can pass eachother without fighting. Any sort of decent numbers will probably end up fighting eachother.

It's complicated. Sceleria was sieging the throne with all that shit, and I had to stop it, otherwise Sy would've won the next turn (at least I think so). I blocked every adjacent province with liches and 200 soulless (via Stygian Paths), and teleported my pretender and 1 illusionist along with dusk elders to the throne province (that belonged to Pythium).

Illusionist cast fag warriors and mass flight and died to soul drain. But I was prepared for that and cast life after death beforehand. The ghouls are there as blockers and charm/enslave mind bait. Ghoul commanders are from arouse hunger.

Throne victory in 2scrubs was achieved by taking undefended 3pointer and indie 2pointer cleared by Ulm. At turn 110 clearing out indie throne is not exactly hard, but it would have taken me another 5-6 turns and Ulm was geting bored as shit.
I was the only person tracking thrones until i mentioned it to Ulm.
As far as game concluding, Ulm just quickened it, his impact during the previous stages of the game was far more significant and what actually put me into viable game position.

He could have also dragged it down (after I notified him) but that would just be kingmaking for another player.

>>
>>135216670
Never send your pretender in blind.

You want to specifically target provinces with militia, light infantry, light cavalry, archers and tribals if you don't want him stacking up a huge number of afflictions or end up dead

You need to avoid:
-Heavy Cavalry (lance charges deal significant damage)
-Crossbows (they pierce armor and ignore awe and invulnerability)
-Lizard Men (they will curse your pretender so he ends up with an assload of unremovable afflictions)
-Undead (they ignore awe and don't rout)
-Thrones (there will almost always be powerful mages there who will summon 30 fire elementals or other bullshit to rape you)

Eh,
:Ashdod got taken out by Agartha/Man
:Ulm got removed by Ermor/Vanheim
:Abysia got removed by Ermor/Vanheim
:Marignon chainstaled out when he realized his crusade was never winning
:Agartha got taken out by a methhead (apparently)
:Once all that was done, I removed Man really fast, ate up some of AI Agartha, and then fought Jotun for the win. Before that point I had basically been researching and building up path diversity the entire game, before finally exploding onto the scene with hundreds of demon knights.
>>
>>135224684
To be fair to Van, he did most of Ulm/Abysia, Ermor just got some of their stuff (a couple of provinces).
To be unfair to him, I dropped a king of elemental fire on his Cold Cap and then sat a scout on top of it for half a year.
>>

I had an idea for a map I like, basically a 4-way wrap of the Mediterranean, this image is a pretty good idea of the exact borders I had in mind, though I'd expand the Black Sea up a bit to mesh in with that edge of the Atlantic north of Spain. Actually probably just also bring the eastern edge of the Mediterranean all the way to the Strait of Gibraltar. I've never made a map though and have several questions about good map design.

I have 0 artistic skill, but Oeridia was apparently drawn in MS paint so I can probably get away with that. How important would you say aesthetics are in your map selection decision making? I can shoot for not-eye-gouging, but what are the priorities for that? Balanced contrast, not too bright?

How bad would it be to have islands without a direct connection to the mainland? Right now I'm thinking Corsica & Sardinia, Cyprus, and maybe Crete and the Mallorcas. Probably also those islands to the west of Portugal. It seems like a notable boost to aquatic nations that need to secure a land province, but those nations pretty uniformly need that boost anyway.

How bad are fixedstarts? I was thinking about putting 6 land nations and having them start in Paris, Madrid, Rome, Constantinople, Carthage, and Cairo. Then figure out some starts for 2 underwater nations, probably up in the Black Sea and south of Greece.. This would also allow me to create fairly rich groups of farmland in historically valuable land and still have it evenly distributed, which bring me to my next question.

The ineffable spectre of Clustered Terrain. With some modifications for gameplay purposes, I'd like to keep the terrain types fairly close to real-world if at all possible. However that does mean pain-in-the-ass mountain ranges, farm clusters, and just fucktons of forest in the European areas. Obviously some of this needs to be sacrificed for a playable map, but I guess I'm asking how much. Is there a good rule of thumb for this stuff?

>>
>>135227493
It can be worked around with fixed starts, but only very carefully.

Without fixed starts clustered terrain and pain in the ass choke points are a death knell though.
>>
>>135227493
You are guaranteed to make a shitty map, essentially. You know this, and it may be fun to play on anyways, but it is going to be pretty shitty by any map balance standard. That said, people play on some pretty bad maps anyways, so it's whatever.
>>
EdibleGloves admin are you lurking? Are we gonna wait till the max of 12 players before starting?
>>
>>135228740
I was going to wait until 12 people joined since Riverlands is a fairly big map for that many players and I originally had the max players at 15 anyway. Hopefully three more people join, but we've been waiting for, what, a week and a half? Doesn't matter too much at this point if the game takes a few more days to start unless people really want to get going.
>>

>>
>>135229118
Well I'm game for starting before the 12, but you are correct that it is a big map so the more the merrier. Not too many people joining games at the moment, so IMO if we don't get it filled in a day or two we just start.
>>
>>135229720
So you attacked me with a bunch of stuff with no magesupport, and didn't use mages when I was sitting on your cap?
>>
>>135229783
Yes, but crossbows aren't particularly effective against invulnerability. They're just good at breaking through protection in general.
>>
>>135226032
Okay, as I've done all my bit (sum1won is adding it into the mod and correcting my spelling mistakes) here's the explanation.

When a knight gets to 30 XP (Knights of man, avalon and knight commanders of avalon count), they then can become a Penitent by going to you cap. They will then become one of the 12 knights if there is an empty spot.
So semi-heros, and encourages you to use the knights.

>>135228421
Are you taking that just from the clustered terrain bit? Because that isn't the plan. The plan is to make a good map based off of the mediterranean. I might end up drawing my own border and shift the geography around quite a bit, but I would like it to look a lot like a real-world map. As far as the clustered terrain goes, I'm really just asking how clustered is too clustered. Obviously you can have a couple adjacent provinces that are the same terrain type, I was just trying to feel out people's' opinion on how far is too far.

This is my (rough) idea of the geography and starting positions. Kinda just dabbed the aquatic nations somewhere in the middle. Obviously the actual distance between nations depends on the province layout but this looks pretty well spread out.

I guess the next step is to start roughing out provines. Probably around 95 land and 25 water for a map this size? Not sure how much you need for 2 water nations at once.

Right now I have eight pages, one for each path. Each page displays the highest path a nation can get in it and the crosspaths focused on that path.
For example, a nation with F3E1, F2E2, and F1E3 will have the F3E1 listed on the Fire page, the F1E3 listed on the earth page, and, where the current problem comes in, the F2E2 listed nowhere at all. Any ideas on how to lay out the information that would also indicate the nation could hit F2E2 without requiring a giant clusterfuck of sheets?

Here's hoping I'll spawn in the forest, then.

Not sure if elite heavy cavalry recruitment in the middle of the woods makes sense, though. And their flavor text mentions training by Witch Mothers (castle recruit) rather than connection to forests.

Forest-recruit Foresters and Royal Foresters with leadership 40 would be nice. Or some kind of stealthy Logrian warrior since they're supposed to be descendants of Ulmish barbarians and forest-recruit badass axe warriors are fun.

The thing is having a lot of level 3 nature mages means significantly less than level 3s in any other path. Pangaea might be a nature heavy nation but they got really good troops and even Ur has some decent water and earth paths.

Spreadsheet fag here.
Would you say that (MaxPath1WithPath2+MaxPath2@MaxPath1WithPath2+MaxPath2WithPath1+MaxPath1@MaxPath2WithPath2)/4 is a reasonable way to say how "deep" a nation's access to a crosspath is?

That is, if a nation could recruit F1W3s and F2W2s, they'd have a "depth" in the FW crosspath of 2. ((1+3+2+2)/4)

Disregarding the crosspaths, Mothers are sacred A2/N2/N3 for 195 gold. That's a similar or better path depth compared to Abysia's Anathament Salamanders (and at nearly the same price).

If you replaced those paths with literally any other magic path, they'd be decent (possibly even great) combat mages. Nature is the problem.

>>135249539
Fairy spells would be cool.
>>
>>135249813
Ok, let me rephrase then -

What is the point of 'crosspath depth' and why does it matter if you divide the value by 4?
>>
>>135249893
See, now that you're actually asking a question I can give actual answers.

Having access to F10 and E10 mages tells you jack and shit about how well a nation can cast FE crosspath spells. Ideally, you'd just say "Nation can get F3E1 and F2E2" because that's what actually matters, but I'm trying to find a single numeric representation for the purposes of comparing nations.

The division by four is because I'm taking the average of four numbers. It's not strictly necessary for comparison between crosspath depths, but it is helpful to put them into a context more similar to path depth figures.
>>
>>135250117
An F2E2 is infinitely better than an F3E1 in most cases.
>>
>>135250117
The problem is that what matters is generally a specific combination of paths, since crosspath spells are rare, and useful crosspath spells are even rarer.

E1F4 (i.e. EA Abysia) gives you a crosspath depth of 2.5, better than a nation with E2F1 (which gets 1.5), but only one of the two can cast magma eruption, which is what you mainly care about from F/E

In short, I question how useful this is going to be as a method of comparing national access to crosspaths.
>>
>>135250117
Ok, but the value of crosspaths depends on what they can cast with it and assigning a value to it doesn't tell me that. F3W1 has the same value as W3F1 in that system Having a number for 'crosspath depth' for F and W that doesn't tell me if a nation can cast Acid Rain or one that assigns the same value to A3D1 as D3A1 doesn't do anything.

I'm hoping that it'll help measure how a nation's crosspath access is structured and allow for another degree of comparison between nations. I'm just setting up spreadsheets right now though, and won't be able to tell if there's any value in the numbers this spits out until I have at least an Age done. I wouldn't be surprised if it did turn out to be a worthless figure.
>>
>>135250701
The problem is that the number 'crosspath depth' doesn't add any value. D3F1 and F3D1 both do things for a nation. They don't do the same thing, and seeing them have the same DF crosspath value doesn't tell us anything. Like, at all. The number is useless.
>>
>>135250901
Crosspath depth for a single path means little. Mean crosspath depth for a nation might say a lot about the nation's mages.
>>
>>135251094
I don't really see that, no. All you end up with is a bunch of numbers that literally don't tell you anything about what the nation can cast/forge.
>>
>>135250701
If I may suggest a better way to do this, I'd try to do a nationwide average (plus minimum and maximum) of the number of different paths each of that nation's mages has.

For example, on EA Arco:

Priestess, nature only, 1 total path
Mystic, astral, fire, water, earth, 4 total paths
Oreiad, air, earth, nature, water, 4 total paths
Mage Engineer, air, earth, fire, water, astral, 5 total paths.

So EA Arco has an average of (1+4+4+5)/4, which works out to 3.5. They also have a minimum of 1 and maximum of 5.

Compare that to EA Abysia, which has average of 1.4, minimum 1, maximum 2.

You can tell EA Arcoscephale will have a lot of crosspaths, even if you aren't sure exactly what those crosspaths are. On the other hand, Abysia obviously has very focused mages, with few crosspaths.

Apparently map-making isn't the only thing that's hard.
>>
>>135251389
I'm not tracking individual mages, but I'm doing something similar with path access ignoring 10% randoms. I've run the data on EA Arco and EA Abysia and EA Arco has access to 6 paths and 13 crosspaths, whereas EA Abysia has 4 and 2.

The only issue I'd take with your metric is that it doesn't tell you how diverse those crosspaths are. A nation where every mage has three paths sounds very diverse, but if that's just every damn one having FNB then you're not really diverse at all compared to the nation where each of their six mages has a different set of two paths.

>>
>>135252504

Winning a SP game is not really relevant to MP, the AI is terribad, and doesn't play like a player at all.

The magic is a lot like DnD magic, some spells are useless, some spells will just outright wreck the fucking shit of whoever is caught in them. Overall, anything that hits a whole battlefield is objectively superior to anything that targets only a portion of it (because the effects of nearly every battlefield wide spell are significant), and the effectiveness of ANY spell is measured completely by if it lets you win battles - doing slightly more damage to someone in a lost battle is often meaningless, as your forces are scattered after the fight if you lose, and while routing many of your troops/mages will get cut down.

You don't plan around 'researching schools' but rather 'casting spells', you look at your national mages, and decide what you want them doing/which of them you're going to build, and then research the tree that has that spell in it. When you get to that spell, that strategy becomes available to you, and you pick a different spell. This results in things like researching Summon Stormpower, Storm, and Thunderstrike to add 'mass tstrike' to your strategies, as mass tstrike wins fights, or researching Horde of Skeletons to add skelespam to your arsenal, or researching Foul Vapours and Serpent's Blessing to add 'slow poisoning' to your arsenal, or researching Fog Warriors to add that to your arsenal, etc. Sometimes stuff you want is in the same tree, and the combined value of all the things in that tree is added to the value of the spell you're going for, which might outweigh a singular useful spell in another tree.

Anything you can't cast from national mages is worthless unless you can get enough mages of that type to matter. Anything that needs multiple casters but only like 1/10 of your mages can cast it is also worthless.
>>
>>135252459
I predicted that EA Arco and AE T'ien Ch'i would have low mean crosspath depth ratings compared to EA Abysia.
I'm right. I'm about to plug in EA Hinnom and I'm expecting a high value based on how their mages are set up. If I'm right, then I'm noticing a correlation and my metric is likely to be measuring SOMETHING of meaning.
>>
Is it possible to make a unit that upon dying releases a sleep cloud effect or deals fatigue damage in an area around it?
>>
>>135252504

Give us a nation and we'll tell you.

Are you EA Machaka? You'll probably want Enchantment for skelespam and flaming arrows, but you couldn't care less about Blood. MA Pangea? You should probably pick up Alteration. It really does depend.

In the end, all nations want to have all the magic, but Dominions is - at least in MP, the way it's meant to be played - a game of efficiency. It's about using the least amount of resources to make the most progress, because if you need 500 blood slaves to kill your enemy and they've found a way to kill you with only 200, it doesn't take a genius to find out who dies first.

This isn't to say that you should conserve resources if you can use them effectively, just that, if you can do a job with two mages, don't do it with four. Do it with those two and then do it in another province with the other two.

The reason I'm saying this is because the same goes for magic. A key part of playing is identifying which spells make the most impact and which are easiest to get, and then leveraging those early and often before people get counters. Don't get Conjuration 9 if Conjuration 3 will do.
>>
>>135253067

(cont)

You measure the usefulness of spells by their battlewinning ability. A few mages spamming Shadow Blast, a single mage casting Fog Warriors, a single mage casting Mass Flight, all can win you fights. A few fireball casters is much less likely to do so, a single tstrike caster is unlikely to. A guy casting Protection or Flying Shards might as well not even be there. A single skelespammer is going to be overwhelmed by a group of 30 guys, and lose you a valuable mage. If you only have one mage of a type, unless it's a battlefield-wide enchantment or a big, powerful spell like Marble Warriors it is nearly certainly not worth researching.

Some nations have guides that mention the spells you should be looking for/using. Others don't, or have guides that are misleading/wrong. Looking for a player who has won a game with a nation and asking what they did/what they cast is probably the most reliable method.

>>135253092

1.83 to Arco's 1.7 and T'ien Ch'i's 1.66. Abysia at 2. 2.4 if I exclude Horrite Shamans, which is exactly what I'd expect. It's working, a high value is indicating focused crosspaths on mages and a low value the inverse.

>>
>>135253798

>>
>>135253915

Most summoning rituals are not worth it. One exception is the national summon of EA Agartha, the Living Mercury. That one is quite good.

Most in-battle summons are not worth it, with skeleton spam being a very large exception.

Yes, it's worth going higher in paths provided that there are spells there that you intend to make use of.

Looking at Agartha, what you'll note is that they have fantastic Earth mages. There are a few ways to make use of this. One is evocations: Blade Wind destroys anything unarmored, and Magma Eruption - which a third of your Earth Readers will have - destroys anything, full stop. Alteration 2 has the extremely-useful Earth Meld, which immobilizes enemy units, and the school also contains good spells like Destruction and Curse of Stones. Enchantment 3 and Construction 3 gives you the quite-useful spells Strength of Giants and Legions of Steel, but these are somewhat hampered by the fact that EA Agartha's soldiers are awful.
>>
>>135253915

The vast majority of unit summons are shit. There's two main categories that are okay. Chaff - weak units you get cheaply and use as speed-bumps or siege value trash. Wolves and bone fiends go here and little else. Elite buffable units - units that with buffs do not die and kill other units without losses. Wights go here, as do green lions, gelatinous cubes, a few other things that are rarer/more expensive. Most of the time anything else you're summoning is a waste of a mage's time and precious gems. As you start to use magic more you'll be spending all your gems on items (mostly boosters and cheap thug gear and anti-RoS mage armour), on teleportation (getting stuff into position), and battlemagic (1 gem = +1 path for 1 spell, and a lot of the better spells need gems as well).

EA Agartha is notable as it has a lot of national summons, nearly all of which are amazing. The best strategy i've seen for the nation is to use the mind blasters, pale ones as siege units, and the summons as melee infantry (magma children, earth elementals, mercury elementals, penumbrals, umbrals), with Marble Warriors to buff the summons (taking them from prot 0 to prot 15 or whatever and patching their main weakness - low prot), and Earthquake to clear out chaff hordes (which can wear down the summons). Earth Meld and Maws of the Earth are your other main battle spells, along with Magma Eruption, and that's an extremely powerful strategy, done right, as with lots of Earth Readers and summons you can outmage your opponents a lot of the time, as well as marble warriors being a very efficient buff (which is good as you are often strapped for earth gems).

The proportion of mages:army should be roughly 1:1 in gold terms. This means you build extra forts to make more mages.
>>
>>135254345
>Most in-battle summons are not worth it
Elementals, imps, and bugs are great for their cost
>>
>>135254402

(cont)

In earlygame you make more troops, if you're not at war (and therefore not suffering attrition) you stop making troops entirely and just make mages. After a certain point, extra troops is pointless. Extra dudes in the back not killing stuff are not really there for any purpose, except siege strength. Whereas a mage can contribute from nearly any point on the field, and can research in peacetime, making them useful regardless. You generally want enough troops to form a front-line for your 'killing stuff' strategy, or just to form a front line if your killing stuff strategy is your troops. Putting too many melee troops in the same place just means Fire Storm or Foul Vapours (or archery) will clear them out without them even getting a chance to get into combat.

>>135254345

Elemental spam is extremely powerful, and swarm/creeping doom also has uses. Phantasmal Army has uses too. Summon Imps. A few other things i'm forgetting too, probs.

Blade Wind is not a great choice vs anything but unarmoured chaff, which is a rare thing in the current dom4 meta, and EQ is generallly a better answer to that. The only time BW outpaces EQ is against high-defense unarmoured troops, which are rare. It can wreck Wot5E though.

Strength of Giants and Legions of Steel are not great for Agartha, as their troops are so terrible. I guess it increases Magma Child damage, but Marble Warriors and Ironbane are both more important.
>>
>>135254583

You're definitely right about elementals. I'm not quite sure about imps, though that's lack of experience talking, and as for Swarm, it definitely has its uses, but I find it somewhat niche. It's more a spell for when you have fifty N1 research mages that you suddenly need to leverage against someone.
>>
>>135254874

Imps need Hold Hold Hold Hold Imps or Hold Hold Hold Imps Imps, you need your melee line in the fight before the imps spawn or they'll just get cut down be weight of numbers.

Swarm was a lot better in dom3. Now, it's mostly useful in assassination battles or in emergencies. Creeping Doom is okay if the enemy doesn't have tramplers and you need a frontline to hold for something (usually Foul Vapours). It's still better cast staggered, so all your little insects aren't on the field at once.
>>
>>135254874
Imps are size 1 and hit really fucking hard with blood lust and darkness up. Swarm works as extreme tarpits for most monsters without high attack or aoe attacks.

But the both players (they haven't been AI) did literraly nothing, despite Thrones being in their capcircles (!). I have underestimated the retardness.
And I was somehow trying to stop Bogarus, I teleported my golem in his newly gined Throne, but he put Wizard Tower in it, so it was a failure (and gems for the spell was given to him by Lemuria). And Lemuria did nothing to stop Bogarus from thronerushing, so he was kingmaking more than me. Plus Ulm and Man have been hopeless as I said earlier. So ironically I was the only one who was resisting, but it wasn't enough.

Ahh thats neat to hear because I have a major hardon for anything celtic so when I found out about these guys I got all excited about fighting other players with an army of barechested dudes backed by druids.

>>
How good is Pythium?

>>
>>135276524

Extremely Bad

No.

Use the renatus, the legionnaires, and nether darts + skelespam + water elementals + foul vapours+serpent's blessing from the serpent priests. Or use the heliodromii to fireball.
>>
>>135276647
should i play it in LA or MA?
>>
>>135276760
MA and LA Pythium are quite different from each other. MA Pythium is fine, it just has squishy armies since you rely on communions a lot, but your mages are capable and you have national angel summons later on to spice things up. LA Pythium is kind of a mess and has lots of diversity but not that many useful ways to take advantage of it.
>>
>>135275843
>Even in dom3 not as terrible as people claimed
They were better in dom 3.
>>
>>135276760

MA is a lot better than LA. You use communions, legionnaires, and angels.

The quadbless boars strat is a meme. The other guide is scales marverni, which works fine. The boars strat fails against giants or competent players, the scales guide doesn't have a lategame component.

Elder druids weren't str, but all their other stuff was comparatively weaker. Chainmail and sequani being actually good is a dom4 thing.

Golems?
>>
>>135283325

There's a lot of things wrong with his statement, from the assumption that national troops' weaponry is meaningful in lategame to the idea that cascades/gifts/soul slay marverni actually cares about weapon damage at any stage of the game. I'd just assume it's random noise/trolling and move on.
>>
>>135280469
>big battlefield-wide E and S spells aren't a late game plan?
Not really, considering you're using human troops. You can buff your troops up, but most nations will do it way better since you're in the age of elves and other nonhumans.

>>135282420
Oh, you were saying it doesn't discuss any lategame stuff.

Fair enough, I thought you were saying the pretender build didn't have any lategame options (and therefore implying it should have).

Yo for new Man spells - I'm really digging the idea of national buff spells for the witches to cast. Something worth considering is that since the Mothers are stealthy and have 40 leadership, they're most likely what you're going to be using to lead your raiding parties. Giving them an AoE Aim effect would be cool for their foresters, since it;d let Man get a buff before Wind Guide for them, and I'm also a fan of the strength buff national (which they would also love, given their two attacks).
>>
>>135296331
Is there much call for something sooner than wind guide?
I'm looking at the idea of a range 1/0 (not sure which, 1 makes it nicer) forest only army teleport, in effect allowing ambushes, though it'd probably have to be on an item.
>>
>>135297370
It's not a huge thing, but the idea would be to have something that your mothers without A2 can cast (possibly even without gems) to enable them to raid with a group of foresters.

Can spells cast from items be cast outside of a lab? If so that'd work, but magic phase movement really is a pretty big deal.
>>
>>135297620
True, true...

And yes, I think so unless I'm much mistaken, though I should check if it can be cast from stealth, as is the intention.
>>
>>135146395
Agartha's pretender UP for the EA game
>>
>>135298049
And I checked and it can't, so it's going to be 1 province. Maybe the spell being lowish level but the item being higher level?
>>
>>135298372
Magic phase army movement is a really big deal
>>
>>135298735
I know, even at one province range only from forests it'll allow vast amounts of ambush tactics. But being an elf inspired nation that lacks elves I thought such sneakyness would potentially make them much more viable.
