Hellscape serb from yesterday is back up, really need help pushing out into the waste.

we are currently COMPLETELY out of iron, but there is a field just south of the outpost, we are tunneling through the ayys to reach it.

Just put speed module into fucking everything to double your production without having to double the amount of factories.

What kind of system can you make for automating the production of green research? What kind of monstrosity do you need to automate all that shit?

Is there any kind of tool that lets you wire inserters up to chests and belts and machines and only take out or put in products as they are needed?
Or an inserter with a longer range?

https://a.pomf.cat/fchpdy.zip

47.223.135.84:34197
>>
>>134962203
Yes, you can. With a certain research you will have request slots and trash slots (latter auto-dump to storage). When requesting you specify what you need and in what numbers. Same works for requester chests.
>>
>>134961865
Constructors automatically repair all things damaged near them.

Logistics bots move things around based on chest and your own inventory set ups.

Chances are you didn't have anything that needed to be done and so they just chill in their base.

Simplest thing you can do is fill one base up with repair modules and it will repair stuff around it, or research "logistics trash slots", place down a storage chests and dump something in the thrash slots and the robots will move the things to the storage chests.

>>134962203
They can do that, for that you need to have a chest with items you want, research "logistics slots" and then order them to bring the stuff to you. This is best done by replacing basically any chest you use to store or hold items with a passive provider chest.

>>
>>134963941
You should always make more in Factorio. More! MORE! MOREEEEEE!!!
>>
>>134963941
Yes they have to be in range.

You need more roboports to expand the network to cover more ground.

You can even get a personal portable robotport later that goes into your suit allowing you to use construction robots outside of your base.
>>
>>134961865
Protip about chests:
Put a bunch of storage chest to somewhere in your base. Your bots will carry whatever needs storing into them, think of that as your main warehouse.

Requester chests are obviously for input. You use them to supply your factory.
Active/passive provider chests are what often confuses people. You use these for factory output to store end products. The only difference between active and passive provider chests is that passive chests are left alone until their contents are needed, while active chests are always emptied by bots and their contents are carried to a storage chest.
Generally it's best to use passive provider chests to store products, and use the red X on the chest interface to limit how much you want to stockpile. For example you don't want to produce 2000 laser turrets, so you could limit the chest to 2 slots to stockpile only 100 at max, and then the production stops.

You use active provider chests if you want to store the items in a central storage, or if you want to keep producing them even when you have a full chest's worth. Examples are solid fuel, walls and so on. Alternatively, when you use drones to carry materials from your nearby mines and want to relocate the ores to somewhere else.

I do the same shit, instead of having a main bus I just have some sort of franken factory. I don't even have special purpose circuit production, my entire assembler line is there to build whatever the fuck I need at that moment. I haven't seen a drop of blue science for days now because I'm too fuckin' lazy to set up a better circuit setup.

I don't even bother to transport steel and batteries by belt, I just use bots for all of it. My furnaces feed everything out at such a rate that it's becoming logistically impossible to feed my assembler trees.

The real problem is that it's not scalable at all which will result into problems when you move out of early game.

AUTOMATED INSERTER ROTATION WHEN
AUTOMATED BELT ROTATION WHEN
BELT SENSORS FOR DETECTING ITEM FLOW WHEN
Sensors detect no coal flow in x seconds from belt, so backup belts and inserters rotate to start deploying coal onto the main fuel line from a backup storage area. When coal is flowing through main bus once again, inserters rotate back to stop fuel redirection, and belts rotate back after all backup coal on the belt system has been transferred to the main line.

Because it does the exact same thing if you just leave it backed up. The splitter won't send iron down the backed up path and just lets the iron that would have gone down that path continue down the bus normally.

You can let things back up in this game, it won't blow up your factory.

Is it even possible to have more than 2 people in a game and not lag?
>>
>>134976854
No. Coal doesn't catch fire that easily.

Coal dust is a different case. The crushing of coal creates coal dust which can be suspended in the air. This coal just can be easily ignited, and will explode. The risk for these explosions is much higher in enclosed mines than in strip mines.
>>
>>134976471
That is an interesting solution. I always keep my steam engines in walled off packs as I need them. So I'll start out with 6 and then later build a pack of 12 somewhere else.

I tried to do a bus but I only half understand - getting iron and copper off a central line to make things is fine, but what about moving secondary products around the place? Like advanced circuits and so on? Surely you can't just send everything down the middle.

No, flour dust is extremely explosive. Any dust that contains a material made of carbon is extremely explosive, due to the very large surface area of the material that is able to contact oxygen.

With most things that combust, their combustion speed is limited by the surface area in contact with oxygen. This is the reason why an unsplit log burns very slowly and coolly but that same log split into 4 pieces burns very quickly and much hotter. Simply put, more surface area means more places for fire to catch. By turning it into a dust, you maximize the amount of surface area in contact with oxygen, which causes things to combust very rapidly, and thus explosively. Piles of saw dust are one of the most dangerous things to keep lying around a workshop because any small spark or ember can cause a very explosive reaction.

There was an accident in a flour mill where I used to live. From a survivor:
"First I heard a terrible roar, vibrations as if it where a powerful earthquake, as if the whole floor was collapsing. Then came the fire wave [...]
I was loading goods into a truck. The fire wave came with such force even the trucks moved. It was terrifying. I saw coworkers burning, metal sheet raining everywhere, flames, screams. My hair flamed up, my hands were burnt. It's a miracle I'm alive"

Yeah, they are good but expect a 2-3 times more complex production chain for everything.
They seem to be mostly bug free, I never had any technical problems with them. It's also not too unreasonably unbalanced, though higher tier gun turrets trivialize defense at the cost of having to have ammo logistics for them compared to laser turrets.

>>
>>134985082
everything is shared between everyone, this includes a lot of modded stuff other than technologies
>>
>>134984354
The new ores come in tiers, it's not all that complicated.
You can survive on vanilla mats at the start.
Then you need some tin and zinc for green science.
Then zinc and a small amount of quartz for blue.

After this, Nickel will give you new equipment, like Mk3 gun turrets which will keep you safe for a long, long time.

Then comes titanium which is basically replacement for steel, and you will need a ton of it. Mostly for higher tier buildings, equipment and so on. These are usually just a more faster versions of lower tier mines, assemblers and so on. Of course it's also needed for weapons.

Eventually you will need lithium for tech 2 batteries, which is needed for upgraded solar panels, lasers, and everything you need batteries for.

You also need a lot of other shit like chemicals (gas or fluids), but they just come either from water or oil.

Anyway, my point being that you will only need about 4 new materials all the way to blue science, and then everything after that is just really needed to make better versions of everything. 2/3rds of the mod adds new stuff after the vanilla tech would end.

Could I make this scale by just putting down a spliter and making more of this installations all the way down with the science packs going to a big lab complex instead of just the four labs you see here?

Can I make a filter or a timed inserter that takes like one out of every four sheet and shoves it onto a different belt so I can but more sheets into other lines instead of having everything go down my science line?

check the time required to craft each component, that's how many assemblers you will need for that component
if you get more than 1 result item(example:1 copper plate->2 copper wires) divide by that amount
for example, red science packs take 5 seconds, so 5 assemblers, iron gears take 0.5 seconds to craft so 0.5 iron gear assemblers
now if you wnat more production you can double these numbers for double the production, 1 iron gear assembler for 10 red science pack assemblers

>>134990853
Literally go out and kill them. Can you build a tank? Have you been working on your weapons tech? Unfortunately it's not viable to totally disregard those routes unless you're playing full peaceful or something. If their attacks are getting overwhelming then it's time to go dunk a base or two to push them back. The reason their attacks seem so overwhelming is that they gather in large herds before they reach critical mass. If you attack their base just after one of their attacks they'll be in fewer numbers though you'll still want to be mindful of the worms. Bring explosives and fire and get your bug hunt on.

Alternatively to bombs and fire, bring a bank of turrets and a metric shitfuckton of ammo and leap frog turret batteries as you get closer and closer to their base. I did this with lasers but I imagine it would go about the same with regular turrets.
>>
>>134991256

>>
>>134991353
>>134991369
Basically these to answer this question >>134991256 . The tank is your friend. AOE shells are also wonderful but they can be expensive resource wise. Try not to lose your tank either. If it starts getting damaged get out and repair. Also don't bring a lot of stuff with you because you'll lose it when you die.

If you have extra power to spare then get lasers ASAP so you can put those resources you aren't spending on ammo into other things.

After building a bunch of stuff out of blue transport belts and sanic fast inserters, it feels so weird going back to your low tech parts where things are still using yellow inserters, and then you are amazed at how the hell is that slow shit even working without starving out all those factories. I always feel the urge to replace all those old inserters, even when the faster one will just consume more power but won't make anything go faster.
>>
>>135015476
but they dont consume more. the drain is the same, and for every item moved they use the same amount.

the only difference is the energy and material to build them.
>>
>>135016994
I didn't realize that, their drain is indeed the same. So their energy consumption is only higher when they work at full speed?

They are great and you don't have to worry about coal. Also all the accumulators you put down make it so laser towers power drain becomes a non issue.

>>135018791
Solars cost much more than a boiler and does maybe one tenth of the production. I just don't see it. By the time you can afford enough solars you are far into endgame and it doesn't matter anyway. For most of the important part of the game, enough of them is out of the question.

>>
A bit confused about how power generation works, can someone explain what these mean specifically?

Performance
Available Performance
Consumption
Production

I've been assuming that "performance" refers to overall % capacity your generators are running at, while "available performance" refers to the efficiency of your generators or something like that, but I'm not sure if I'm making a shitty assumption here. Also consumption always seems to be maxed while production fluctuates all over the place for some reason?
>>
>>135021550
Not that guy, but what if I'm a lover of strongholds and military bases?
I usually only build 3-5 of each factory (besides smelters, of course), and my main goal in the game is reaching the maximum technology level, having a few of everything and obtaining the strongest weaponry, armor, modules and defense in the game so I can remove the bugs from the face of the planet.

I play the game like an RTS, and my goal is military power, not mass production. As long as the research keeps going and I can manufacture enough gear for myself, it's good enough.
>>
>>135022338
You still need oil for explosives :^)
>>
>>135022240
Consumption is how much power demand is covered.
Production is how much of maximum production is utilised.

As long as you can produce more than is consumed C is full, P is filled partially.
As soon as it flips the bars flip.
>>
>>135022240
Oh ok, makes sense. Thanks.
>>
>>135022240
Available performance - if it's not a full green bar, then the steam engine is not supplied with enough hot water (build more boilers so the water that reaches the engines is at 100 degrees), or the solar panel is not getting enough sun (because it's not daytime). This should be max.

Performance - how much of its total possible output is it generating. If the bar is full, then you are at your limits and should make more generators. If it's half full, then it can generate more power as needed.

Drain - costs this much power even when not doing anything
Energy consumption - how much power it eats when it works at 100% speed.

I've lost control of my life

My next project is going to be setting up my first roboport. I'll be using a temporary belt system to make electric engines initially but I'll then move that to a chest system when I have enough robopals.

After that, I'll be cleaning up my production and moving what I can to roboautomation, and centralizing my production and raw materials.

Can't believe I have everything running so smoothly up to this point though. Getting blue science automation was easier than expected.

Oh, it's gonna get much more fun.
Here's some tips that I wish I knew on my first game. You gonna need tin, zinc and lead for red-green-blue science stuff, so leave some room for some belts carrying those plates.

The rest of the new materials are mainly for tiers of upgrades that continue after the vanilla factorio tech ends, and you can have those in other parts of your factory, so you don't have to worry about them just yet. By the time you need those mats you can have robots, which will make things easier.

Second, you will need a lot of random fluids and gas for circuit boards. Almost all of these are made of oil or water. Water can be pumped from under the ground with a pump which is a fairly early research, so you don't need to carry it all around your base or build everything next to a lake. Oil and lubricant can be carried from your refinery to your assemblers in barrels, which again removes the need to have pipes all across your base.

Finally, circuit boards will need wood. Thankfully you don't have to cut trees for that shit, you can make synthetic wood from oil.

Lead in small amounts. And a bit of quartz.

Most of the new ores are needed for new tiers of upgraded stuff, and are basically post-game content compared to vanilla. For RGBA science the only new ores you need is tin and lead, with a bit of quartz. This gets you to robotics, which basically means winning the game since you have auto-repairing turrets.

>Do you need stone in large enough quantities to justify making a quarry train?

Yes, if you want to make concrete tiles so you can run around Sanic fast

>Does stone occur in large enough deposits to justify making a quarry train?

Yes, if you use RSO like you should be doing.
>>
>>135063184
Something like that is nice, but a single inserter ain't gonna cut it.
Late game you'll need blue belts for at least iron, and inserters can't keep up with that. I do things like that, but I put the inserter and box to the side of the belt like this:
...[][][]
...^^^
-----------
(dot is for spacing, - is for belt, ^ is inserter, [] is box)
And if you run out of a resource, you just flip the inserter to switch from taking to giving.
>>
>>135062813
you're gonna need 2 fast inserters inputting copper wire into your electronics circuit factory
you also need 2 fast inserters putting iron into the upper iron gear wheel factory
the lower one will be starved occassionally with 1 fast inserter but that doesn't matter since you produce twice as many transport belts as you need anyway
this is assuming you have blue assemblers everywhere
if you do ever upgrade to T3 assemblers(yellow) you need to add a bunch of inserters to copper wire

are you familiar with the inserter stack size bonus?

here are several setups, from left to right:
note how 1 fast inserter can't transport remotely as much as 1 yellow belt, by doing it the way you did you're limiting your belts way too much
instead, use something along the lines of the second design, which lets ressources that your inserters are too slow to pickup just pass through
the third design is somethign you might want really late in the game
>>
>>135066108
The fuck are you doing? Fast inserter has the speed of 1/4 the regular belt or 1/16 the express belt. Why do you put more inserters per belt?

it's a testing mode world(basically creative mod, i can just copy stuff for free, building doesn't consume ressources etc.) i just do these chests+inserters to simulate production/consumption
apparently you cannot max a belt out with this though, note how there's gaps in the screenshot and the upper lane of the stone belt carries more stone
the inserters circled red don't actually do anything for some reason
as for excess inserters/chests:
i just winged the amount of inserters/chest needed to saturate a belt
btw: 4 fast inserters are clearly not enough to saturate a yellow belt

It expands the logistics network, anything within logistics range of roboport 1 can be used by roboport 2.

the easiest way is probably to mix the different module types since the recipes are all the same
you can sort it out at the end of the chain when you have finished modules
just loop the belts carrying modules so it won't get stuck on a single module

That means you're done with the hard part. Don't give up now. You will have robots now which simplify things so much.
Of course you still have a ton of stuff to research, but with blue science and alien science which still only requires alien artifacts you can build most of the basic vanilla tech, then you can explore the rest of the bob materials at your own pace, since from now on robots will keep your turrets going.

Get all of bob's mods. While it's modular there's really no reason to use only half of them, it won't make it any less complex since you need all the materials and stuff anyway.

Using these mods now, they are working quite nicely together.
supreme warfare is a bit redundant because bobs already adds new turrets, but it adds variety which is kind of nice.

aircraft is rather overpowered, i don't use it much since it makes blowing up bases too easy

dark matter replicators can simplify a lot of bob's mods (they create any material out of energy, including all of bobs's ores), you can use it as a crutch if you're afraid of getting overwhelmed. I installed it as a safety net, but ended up not even using it. Anyway, you can have a bit of a "bob's mod light" if you use replicators and completely cut out parts of the industry in exchange for a ton of energy.

force fields is a bit meh, it's just a normal wall that auto heals and costs energy. didn't use them much, since the real threat is spitters attacking your turrets anyway. you can skip this one.

the rest are recommended.

try to plan ahead, your furnaces look nice, try to plan areas like that for steam engines etc. as well
>>135072302
you are massively limited by inserter bandwidth, 1 blue assembler making copper wire already needs 2 fast inserters outputting it to work at 100%
long handed inserters are much slower than regular ones
pic related is how green circuits are usually done, the reason this works is because of the inserter stack size bonus[a research] what that does is make inserters move multiple items at a time when moving between containers directly
on the right side of the image there are three setups with assemblers, all with equivalent throughput[at inserter stack size bonus 2, which is 110 green+red science packs in total]

How do you guys usually start a base?

I craft a pickaxe, make enough stone for furnaces and then build a few, setup 1 iron drill and make enough iron for 5 more to get copper and 3 coal drills

You just run it through another refinery (or two for heavy) to turn it into petroleum, also add water. You might need to do some research first.

If you can't yet for some reason then just pump it all into storage tanks.

FUCK BOB'S MODS. seriously.
It's not the ridiculous amounts of new materials, or the absurdly overcomplicated chemistry and having to create half of the elements of the periodic table for the first blue science packs.
It's not even having to make a chain of 30+ buildings to create your first speed module, and having power armor gated behind it. I can deal with that.

No, it's the fucking new tier of enemies which are basically spitters with exploding bullets. Seriously fuck them and fuck them again. It's not that they do that much damage, it's that they damage everything around the turret. They destroy electric poles next to laser turrets, ammo loading inserters next to gun turrets and fucking everything with low health. Those little shits have 100-150 health while turrets have 600-1000, so they go down in a few shots. And when they start shooting at repair drones, they destroy everything that they happened to fly over. A single fucking section of the rail, the fucking rail signal, any random shit that's guaranteed not to have a replacement in your mining outpost so you have to go there personally and rebuild it. Seriously fuck this enemy.

Remember when there was that treefarm mod that let you plant trees and grow them? It later added in an automated tree farm thing that would plant and cut them. You could then turn them into coal, fly ash, etc. There was also some organic chemistry shit added later that let you make glue-turrets that would basically spooge on your enemies, among other broken things.

Unfortunately, it grew trees in a sequentially-plotted solid block that caused trees to grow into each other's bounding boxes and generally looked ugly as fuck. The code was also total garbage and had bugs everywhere. One fun thing it did was serialize the state of the treefarm to your save, and since there was no cleanup, you got gigabutt-sized saves after a day.

My edition figures out where the trees are on save load, plants them in random locations, spaces them out, cuts down trees only after they are finely aged (instead of FUCKING EVERYTHING after a timer hits zero), can selectively harvest tree species for those of us who wish to cultivate a master race, and it lets you plant that species as well, instead of fuck-ugly random trees.

You can also plop the thing down and hit a button to delete ONLY trees, which is great if you're an idiot and built your shit in the Thousand Acre Wood.

That was good fun. Lived up to my name and killed a fuckton of ayys.

What this game needs is more ayy types and more dangerous ayy types past green. Or at least wee need mods to do it, because the modpack we're running makes clearing out ayy hives pretty easy lategame.
>>
>>135150979
More BUUUUUUUUUGS types are impossible to defend with current turrets.

Sure, I'd love to see artillery ayys with long range, but that way we'd need howitzers and missile launchers to counter them.
Maybe tunneling bugs too, that act like NOD's subterranean APC in C&C? Concrete everywhere would be even more useful.

Does anyone here know SpringRTS and its NOTA modification? It has a very fun defense mode, where you try to defeat bugs exported from Starship Troopers.
>>
>>135150979
The ayys are plenty handful on vanilla with vanilla stuff on the highest difficulty. Even when you have effectively maxed out equipment and gear it still takes careful work and some degree of planning to shut them down, especially on the offensive.
>>
>Explosive cannon shells
cant even kill a single big ayy

normal cannon shell kill an ayy nest in 3 shot
>>
>>135151797
They're much more useful later on when everything is clumped together and horrible.
>>
>>135149887
are there any ways in inkscape that allow you to copy/paste objects easily and place them in a fixed grid, or is this just good old autism?

Ctrl-drag, also try rmb while dragging or numpad + but I might be confusing it with Corel Draw.
I think grid is in paper/document settings.
>>
>>135152834
Grid: You can configure one or several grids in the document properties dialog. Then turn on snapping to the grid with the buttons of the snap control tool bar (at the right side of the main window).

Copy&paste: You can clone an existing object with Alt-D (and then duplicate a clone with Ctrl-D). Then simply move the clone where you want. If you change the original, the clones will change, too.

I uploaded the SVG file here, so you can see how I did it: http://pastebin.com/gsX7cHUG (just save as SciencePack.svg)

Is it worth it to keep gun turrets after laser turrets just in case you run out of power?
I'm now researching laser turrets but I am also thinking of making a belt that takes ammo to my gun turrets surrounding the base, but if they'll be replaced soon it's not worth the effort
>>
>>135153645
If something makes it through your laser turrets your gun turrets probably aren't going to be much better off, but if you want them around i'd just put a basic amount of ammo in them and not much else. You're better off putting your resources into your power grid instead. Get solar and accumulators en masse so you can afford the power grid needs of an assault on your laser turrets
>>
>>135149657
I didn't have much trouble setting up my initial rail system, but when I wanted to change it or connect new rails into it I ran into problems. I'll check out the tutorial.

But solar takes so much space, it would need even more turrets to defend that extra room no?
>>
Why even bother with solars when steam engines are way cheaper and produce more power?
>>
>>135153952
Lmaos tend to gravitate towards your noisier parts of the faction
>>
is there a comprehensive mod yet that upgrades tanks so they arent completely ignored past midgame
>>
Do biters become an issue lategame in RSO or are they pretty much neutered if you play on default settings? Not sure if I should turn their spawn up or what, though I might regret it later when I want to start branching out and making more distant outposts.
>>
>>135154004
Solars are free power forever, steam engines need a fuel line
You generally use both though
>>
>>135154004
coal will run out, pollution attracts more ayys
>>
>>135154074
Pretty neutered
Definitely upped them for my next playthrough
>>
>>135153952
The logical conclusion is to push them back to a distant place and set up a line of defense, which is what I did here >>134989660. But also they'll usually go after your most productive building areas so if you get aggressive on the far side of your base from your steam plant yoiu can pretty rapidly clean up and place solar there, then wall off those flanks and go back the other direction.
>>
>>135154074
In the very lategame the green ones are a pain in the ass to deal with. Basically only turretcreeping works.
>>
Is there a mod to make a looped fixed size world? I wouldn't mind if it's just belts pushing items to the other side or some kind of warp boxes.
>>
>>135153952
As total area grows the ratio between perimeter and area decreases. That is to say the bigger area you wall in, the more room there is inside per turret needed on the edge.

Besides ayyys tend to attack the same places every time anyways.
>>
>>135150290
You need more inverters. They'll take what is needed but prefer what's nearest.
>>

The belt feeds in from the east. Copper plate is on the north lane of the belt. Iron is on the south lane of the belt.
The belt hits a splitter. Because the copper plates were on the north lane, the splitter puts the copper plate on the north lanes of both daughter belts. Because iron plate was on the south lane, it puts iron plate on the south lanes of both daughter belts.
Both outputs have copper plate on the north track and iron plate on the south track.
The outputs hit a sideways-turned underground belt input. The hood of the belt blocks one of the lanes, which backs up into the splitter. The other lane feeds into the underground belt input, and comes out the underground output.
The backup into the splitter causes it to ship all product to the side that's getting through, so all copper plates will be diverted to the unblocked north lane of the south output, while all iron plates will be diverted to the unblocked south lane of the north output.
This separates the two lanes of the input belt onto two belts.

Also bonus note: You don't need to get the red science and the green science into the same lab to research something that takes red and green. You can send each color to a different lab. So your manufacturing chain can simply end in a lab from both colors, instead of a belt feeding the lab so it gets both colors.

Turn on peaceful mode in the console:

/c game.forces["enemy"].kill_all_units()

Kill all enemies:

Regenerate your ore fields:

They go rabid if you block their pathfinding. If your train is long enough that the ass end of it isn't out of the way of the hole they want to go through, they stop trying to play Frogger and play Asteroids instead.

I tried to plan out my bob's production chains on paper, but I spent more time on it than playing.
I now just place buildings by "feel" (mostly just look at cycle times to see if it's a fast or slow production item), try to guess how many I need and then use modules to boost up the undersized part of the production.
