Personally I prefer the stories not being too historical because I've gotten a bit tired of the same ol' unification story with the Samurai Warriors characters. Tired of it with Dynasty Warriors too, to be honest. Don't mind reading about it or seeing alternate character interpretations going through the motions but with same ol' SW Nobs and same ol' DW Liu Bei and stuff, it just gets dull.

Personally the way I would do it if you want a change to the system is have the story play out through your in-game actions.
Like if you're Wu/Shu side. You have to make sure the Chi Bi battle is won to keep the historical path. But if you lose and retreat (but not killed), then the story branches off to a what if path.

The real Motochika wasn't a pirate. That was something the SB team made up because one of the Chosokabe's alternate clan crests was a sailing ship. The real Chosokabe was kinda boring and really only of note as they were the big dogs on Shikoku. I mean, they did innovate a new type of farming, but... c'mon, which would you rather make, a clan of pirates or a clan of farmers?

No idea where Motochika's visual kei theme came from in SW though. I guess maybe to match the fact he was a prettyboy in his youth (his father called him "princess" mockingly)? But idk. A lot of Samurai Warriors's artistic licences are less history based than Basara's ironically enough, if more believable.

BECAUSE he was the poster boy on a Koei game actually, up until that point, beign a poster boy means you get a couple missions dedicated to you and that's it. Hell it's still true to Zhao Yun. Do you even Koei, bro?

By the way, all game had an Osaka campaign stage. In SW1/2, Yukimura is seen as a more tragic figure. He "sells" his lost at Nagashino, has a second wind with his Kanetsugo/Ishida friendship (And Shigen/Kunoichi on the first game). When he goes on his Osaka mission, he pretty much knows it's a lost cause. There is more weight to it.

In SW3, he doesn't really give a fuck about any of his constant loses and is compared to fucking Honda Tadakatsu in a couple SW Chronicles stages.

In SW4-II there is a voice clip where he pretty much shrugs the death of Hideyori and keeps fighting anyway, perpetuating the age of chaos and killing a bunch of people in the process because "muh samurai spirit".

They removed all the complexity of the character andhaving him as the main protagonist in one story and the main antagonist in another sucks because the character sucks now.

I kinda miss how the battlefields ended up looking along with the little camps on either side but I guess that's what comes with making the combat deeper.
