On offense you go, trash some mobs, then learn that they're too large a force to handle for the defensive force, so you go back and find Phog pretty beaten and so you trash on mobs for a five minute timer, then Phog and Frye catch up on everything.

What? All in all that shit was great at defending itself. I thought it was all over once Luxxaar started chucking energy balls but apparently it was inconsequential. That shit did not break.

As for why you can't just run out of the Lifehold:
You need to activate the power generator so that the mims could continue running. If you just left the lifehold then and there, assuming Luxxaar died to the chimeras you'd still be screwed since you can't get back into the lifehold anymore.

The defenses were meant to spawn some sort of animal but since it was damaged, it started spawning monsters with unintended consequences such as "kill mims and eat dna soup". So the defenses weren't meant to destroy the lifehold but unfortunately were about to do so.
