if its a track then he is doing it all wrong

just make a thin cube, add loops and use deform modifier, rest of the detail you can do with normal/height/color maps
if you need to add thickness use solidify

the way id go about it is to add loops then deform it manually with proportional editing

more loops = better shape

Not really sure what you're suggesting here. I used a bezier curve and filled it out to what I think is both good-looking and well-performing. I appreciate the tips on optimizing though, already cut faces in half and can probably cut them in half again without losing too much fidelity.

Progress video! 2 minutes, 1st part is a sneak peak of the storyline, 2nd part is behind the scenes timelapse.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGWThppo2-Q

Scarecrow storyline is now done but I'm not going to spoil the solution.
Done today:
- Spawned the scarecrow in the hallway, did a blackout of the players screen and began spook event trigger when player goes to sleep
- Coded the scarecrow to laugh when running away and delete itself at bottom of stairs
- Coded the dialogue events and triggers where player will react to the scarecrow and say their lines while chasing after it
- Coded script to chop the scarecrow with the axe to demonstrate that the solution is something else
Can't say much more without spoiling stuff but from there you can banish the Scarecrow and beat that part of the game.

The next major plotline will need to be for Bloody Mary.

When you're doing low res shit you can get away with weird/fun stuff that would just look entirely retarded at larger sizes.

Sure if you suck at art whatever you make will be bad... but pixel art is a little easier (assuming you're cool with all those kids/retards who find pixel art 100% unacceptable).

Make several unique heads, bodies, clothes, etc. Make several unique textures for each.

Then just combine them in different ways, you'll get more unique models with less work.

And of course special/important NPCs can have their own model and textures.

And your original point was, 'don't use anime girls' which has nothing to do with world building. Artstyle is not world building. To top it all off, you've gone on to say 'use anime girls' now, so what point are you even making anymore?

Comparing this new .webm to my last one >>126577837, what do you think about these smaller vehicle sprites? My justification is that I can have more enemies now, with them slamming into each other less often, but the drop in fidelity is a pretty big cost and I can't seem to force them to crash any more.
Does anyone have an opinion? Should I find a different approach, or do you think the tiny sprites can work?

I don't know how you have things implemented but I work on a stealth game where the AI cannot recognize an enemy until they have seen enough of it for a little meter to fill up. It must be one of them. Making stuff is harder with more control not because i want it to be harder. it's harder because you can control more stuff.

I'm talking about tools as in software that helps you do things.

>>

>Sometimes I wish I was 1MA, having full control over the production sounds really good.
It's pretty rad my man. But then I'm also my own boss in my career of choice outside of gamedev so I'm ruined in that regard. Working on a team is no longer my thing. In most situations where I did work on a team I ended up carrying things myself anyway.

Easier to use would probably be better in that case, as long as you have a way to go further into the tools to tweak specific shit with enough skill.
>>
>>126590807
Thanks, but I think it's all a problem of the tiny sizes. When a movement speed of 2 is too quick and 1 is too slow, or when looking 24 pixels ahead is too much time, but 23 pixels is just short, there's not a lot of things you can change.
I think I will go back to the larger sprites.

>When a movement speed of 2 is too quick and 1 is too slow

>>
>>126591385
The way I see it, based on a lot of experience programming with different tools, is that you have a triangle. One point is ease of use, another is control, and the third is scope. You can mostly have two, but not all three.

It's based on the idea of the Turing tarpit: the more control you have and the more generic, the harder it is to use. Domain specific languages give you a lot of control and ease of use, but they are only applicable to a small range of problems.

first time posting progress for this game, started a couple days ago. i made it once before but i quit it halfway.

it's a game about navigating short platforming challenges where the twist is that you're controlling the only platform in the game with your mouse. there's a bunch of red gates, if you jump through all of the red gates, the goal appears. if you manage to touch the goal, you win.

you can try it here if you want, but it's very buggy so beware. there's no collision for the black platform yet.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/69039392/WEbGL/index.html

input:

-left ctrl to switch between play and edit mode
-hold spacebar to bring up the build menu
-click on the object you want to place and then click somewhere white to place it
-if you want to edit an object, you can pick it up with a left click and then edit it with the arrow keys/mousewheel
-to zoom in and out, you can click the camera and use arrowup and arrowdown
-if you want to connect an object to the pink box, you have to place a box, right click on the object you wish to connect and then right click on the pink box. if it worked, a ball will fly toward the object you connected.
-the box can rotate an object or have it patrol, you can switch modes with the uparrow and then do things with the mousewheel.
-left mouse to jump in when you play

-press L to load the level from the webm, hope it works.

What I want instead, is a pixel game where each individual pixel is a gradient between two different colors, so like a higher-res form of dithering

Meanwhile in, say, Binding of Isaac, or Dungeon Crawl, it changes things up majorly often enough that that's not as much of a problem even though you still come to absolutely hate the first areas...

I don't fully identify with any of them because I'm 1MA. But I can identify partially with all of them.
Jon Blow: Had the approaching feeling of gamedev angst where you realize you need to finish a game and actually do this thing or it will be something in your life that you failed to ever really do.
Phil Fish: Believes gamedev to be the epitomy of media and has a very big ego.
Edmund McMillen: Was destined to be successful.
Tommy Refeenes: Can actually make a game instead of just ideaguy it. Although this applies to Jon Blow and the programmer for Fez as well.

Jon Blow: Had the approaching feeling of gamedev angst where you realize you need to finish a game and actually do this thing or it will be something in your life that you failed to ever really do.

Phil Fish: I will kill myself if I don't finish my game.

Edmund McMillen: Works hard. One interview (or the movie) that I watched with him he says something like: "so I decided to REALLY work on something and REALLY dedicated myself to it". We all know when we're really really doing something and when we're just kinda doing it. Most people don't really do something because they're lazy or scared of really trying their best and still failing.

Tommy Refeenes: This is the guy I hate the most he's a retard but at least he can program and so can I.

The world doesn't need another chucklefish.

There wouldn't be a problem if he stated it was unfinished or submitted it under early access like a decent human being, but as it stands, it looks like this was all intentional.

I agree. I sense a divide is happening though. Everyone here who thinks it's okay for certain devs to lie, steal and generally act like pathetic cunts seems to gel together in hopes of standing against the majority. This never works and everytime they eat shit I can't help but feel rewarded for standing on the right side. Maybe it's not something to be proud of, maybe we were just raised properly and being better people is beyond our control, but the fact is we are right. Holy shit this thread must be full of GaymerGaters, because the logic on display here is just as retarded

>Games journalism is wank
>Let's target this one person who wrote a few reviews nobody read, about literally who games nobody ever played, and do it in the most misogynistic way possible
>This will fix games journalism

>Triple A publishers are releasing unfinished games onto the market
>Let's target a basement dev, someone like me, who released a game that is a little short on content according to me
>This will fix the entire games industry

Nobody cares about games journalism, and nobody cares about unfinished games either. Well, nobody except for assblasted permavirgins whose only interest and reason for being is to waste away their miserable existence playing video games, and only playing video games

Go grab a gun and shoot yourself to death right now

Unless you have performance problems or users are complaining about their batteries draining really fast don't worry about it. Just make sure your framerate is capped and the fps doesn't drop too hard. If users complain about crashes tell them to close down all the other shit on their phone and restart it since mobile users are retards and don't understand what RAM is.

This can't be serialized by Unity's inspector:

public Test<int> TestInstance;

So you have to use this as a workaround:

A few years ago I was serializing something like that and back then it just blew the stack when it tried to deserialize sometimes. When I asked Unity about it they said not to serialize a reference to an object of the same type. They added the depth limit in the next beta version.

the revised illuminati answer is that he dropped pugs life and gods gift and is starting a new game.

the real answer is that he snapped on the day of his cancelled kickstarter, skinned his children and feasted on their organs "for the glory of nodevitep" while his pug was tied up with his eyelids wedged open so it was forced to watch.

it was all done on webcam, you can still find the footage on the deepweb. I was there, it was the most horrible thing ive ever witnessed. I see it when i close my eyes.

They are referred as to MetroidVania. But your game makes me think more of Wonderboy.
>>
>>126610171
Really nice for a first game. Like really nice, I'd say you were bullshitting me if you weren't using Game Maker's built in Display Message function.
My advice is, don't use Game Makers built in message display.

>>

The popup boxes seem kinda intrusive, I'd suggest just making the text float above the player for a bit of time, or have the text appear at the bottom of the screen or something, so it doesnt get in the way of gameplay
>>
>>126610493
Generally better to not marathon dev though, you'll burn yourself out. Building discipline is the best gift you can give yourself.
>>
>>126610284
Yep, I plan on having other animals you can ride as well, each with different skills. Like a Dog that can run fast, the frog can swim, maybe a bird that can fly. I need some more ideas.

>>126610315
Yeah I didn't use the word 'metroidvania' because I've seen people get annoyed by the term.
It started life as a Wonderboy 3 fan game so the background/blocks/candles etc. are taken from it, they're just placeholders right now.

>>126610318
Thanks for the kind words. I'll avoid using the message display in the future. Pretty much all the coding I've used comes from online tutorials.
>>
>>126610171
if you're going to use darkness like that I recommend;
1. using lower saturation. for literally every piece of art you make. get used to using <50 saturation. saturated art doesn't look so great in the dark.
2. don't use default GM assets like the built-in gradient and the message system. You can generate a MUCH nicer gradient in Photoshop. For light it's best to create a gradient which is less like a hard spotlight and far more gradual.

I would actually recommend trying out something where saturation is lost in the darker sections but still show when in brighter light.

>>
>>126611974
Because the volume of new apps being released has grown beyond all reason, and a lot of them are complete trash.
Google and Apple make a cut of the profits of games, so it makes them a lot more money to promote games that are doing well, or have a chance to do well. I've been to dozens of meetings with Google reps promoting our upcoming stuff with producers and the like just so we can get good featuring.
>>
>>126612164
Vector art is computationally expensive, mate. The more complicated art the heavier it gets. You can make it faster by pre-rendering shit to a sprite sheet though (at the cost of flexibility what you can do with it).

Like I said my computer is a toaster, which is why other people would see it as being fine.
>>
>>126612269
I seriously doubt it's graphically drawn with vectors.

Noted. I don't plan on using the darkness too much, only for certain caves/dungeon areas, where it becomes brighter when the character has the torch item equipped.

I can see why people would be annoyed by it but I do like the idea of being able to hear but not see nearby enemies. Something that makes the player want to take more time and tread carefully.

So what's the purpose of killing the little guys?

You want to go all the way back to the start? I guess I'll go play through your Demo Day version and see if I can make my own prototype and I'll contact you next week.

Stop right there. How is having a loser mentality okay in any circumstances in gamedev? Are you just a poser or do you really want to make a game? Judging but your post you're a poser and a loser who fixates on things other people have achieved that you never will. Why even be here?

More seriously, my "personnal engine" is a little messy... A lot messy, so I don't think it's a good idea to give it to someone else. It's performant and I easily know how to use it, but it's not something I can give.

>every proprietary tool ever.txt
Reminds me of the time our tech department insisted on making our own cool engine we would use for all our future games. I was stuck working on the first game to test it out, and the bugs alone must have added 6 months to our dev time, let alone the never-quite-finished-and-only-sometimes-working editor tools
>>
>>126615458
Except that nobody insisted that I make it, I decided to make it myself, and I already made games with.
Easy and little games, yes, but still games.

As in our respective fields? I have made a ton of music and sound effects, he's done numerous coding projects although I can't give specific examples, I'd have to ask. If you have an email we can all chat there.

I don't know if you guys even care about simple phoneshit like this but I wanted to make something that had such small scope that there was no way I would be able to flake out of it, so I took it down to a literal one button game (Well, two counting the try again button).

The goal is you choose a color by pressing the red button (you can use the space bar instead on PC) and then you try to match that color. The colors shift faster and faster as you go along. Your score is based on how fast you reacted when your color came up, with bonuses for hitting it the first time it comes up.

The game isn't finished yet but it has all the basics, it's mostly missing juicing, polish and sound effects.

You should be able to try the game here: http://jdev.itch.io/colors?secret=Y7pIiQQgWJSNuaNxsDWe3oWpc4

I'm looking for tips on the difficulty curve, right now the time between the colors shifting is simply multiplied by a factor, so it's an exponential deal which makes it really hard really fast, but I'm not sure what else to go with. Increasing the speed linearly is simply too slow.

I also considered having extra lives so if you failed it would reset to the start but you'd keep your score, or some other way to reduce the speed of the shifting without game overing, but I feel like I might be overdesigning at that point.
