How do you feel about low graphics options?

Nowadays the lowest setting often barely looks any different from maximum.
Are you comfortable completely shitting up your artistic vision in order to let toaster people play, or do you have a certain standard you won't go below?
>>
>>126526037
Put graphics options into your game, they're fun to mess around with
>>
>>126525868
Most of the time I give up is because I spend like years working on graphism and that don't work...
>>
>>126524387

How do i make my game like binding of isaac so youtubers will play it forever?

>>
>>126526037
If you create options make them as transparent as possible.
Not like Arma3's "medium to low graphic settings makes calculations on the CPU instead of the GPU" shitstain.

Lots of content. Isaac has >300 items. Most roguelites released that try to do something like Isaac don't go over 100. There's a reason why Isaac has so much longevity and it's just pure amount of content and work put into it.

I didn't mean not having graphic options, but rather how bad you'd be willing to make your game look to accommodate people.

With some AAA games the options make fuck all difference and sometimes the performance is about the same too.

I'm trying to understand how niche games get popular

Take Yume Nikki for example. How did it get such a huge cult following despite being a simple RPGMaker game? Did the developer shill it everywhere or was it released quietly? I'm guessing it being free played some role but usually when I see a free game I assume it's most likely shit
>>
>>126528080
>post progress on blog
>some weird person randomly browses gaming blogs looking for original games
>stumbles upon Niche Project
>links it to friends and some small communities
>it eventually gets on a popular imageboard or on Reddit
>eventually, everyone who are interested in this particular kind of game know about it

As long as you post progress somewhere outside AGDG and push forward your strong points, you should be fine
>>
>>126528080
Yume Nikki was unique, intriguing and, most importantly, a Japanese doujin game from the time before the sanctity of Japanese doujin games was defiled. It's the same as Cave Story.
It's not a form of success that you can achieve anymore.
>>
>>126527535

I'm making an RPG and some really crazy shit goes down near the ending, but I'm terrified that people will just drop the game since there's nothing that "wows" them in the first section of the game since I want the twists to be unexpected. Should I stop worrying and just do it like that anyway?

>>
>>126529263
I honestly think for games like this, the biggest let down is finding out about the twist
there was some unity masterpeice(tm) game that was a horror game disguised as a cheasy haunted house, seemed gay from afar but they spoiled the twist of it actually getting creepy or spooky in the steam trailer and for that reason alone I can't be arsed to play it
imagine people telling friends about your game "yh dude, I know it looks dull but trust me, just play it"
I think, if you do your crazy shit ending it will work i you keep it super ont he dl

Kinda sad that VR is championed mainly by lewdshitters and corporate shills, it opens new doors for a lot of game genres and blurs the line between movies and games.

Hope it doesn't flop and end up being yet another sex toy for neckbeards/weebs or a marketing tool for AAA studios.

Games surpassed anything a movie could ever become years ago.
>>
>>126530143
das it mane
I know it's a bit of a poor example as when the game "ramps up" and actually becomes scary, it does a piss poor job of being scary, but the premise is still applicable, keep the twist, don't spoil it, don't hit at it
>>
>>126530220
It's one of the most boring games I have ever played, it's literally walking around rooms repeatedly 500 times until something actually happens and then it's not even that scary.

I have absolutely no idea how this game got so popular.

That's subjective and I disagree, some games still try to be movies to this day but it has almost nothing to do with gameplay (qte is bad design).

What genre of game do I make? Please no visual novel. I want a game where the player will have to do something a lot (enter a battle, go to a shop) so they can see this very cute character and she will occasionally have subtly lewd dialogue to make the players' penis tingle so that night they think back to the game and furious search up R34.

started a small token game, progress for today
the idea is, any unlocked the cards from your library can be added to your deck (max 2 cards of each type), during the game you'll draw 4 cards each turn and chose which ones to play, shuffling the rest (if there're any) back into your deck. The cards are flat bonuses to you, which last until your next turn.

There's a ton of inconsistencies in gml. A lot of functions could be grouped a lot better with better wording.

I think the problem is once they add a function, months later everyone has written it into their game and everyone has gotten used to it.

Looking at the game maker bug tracker and the changelogs makes me not envy those in charge. The program's a goddamn behemoth to manage.

>The program's a goddamn behemoth to manage.
Only because of their own stupidity, it's hard to fix errors like those when people are already using them in their projects, which would mean an update would break the shit out of them, now they just have to deal with that fucked up codebase.

Off the top of my head, I can think of a way to generate gameplay for the kinds of minigames you'd see on Warioware. I assume the same could be possible for genres with more depth, if you had the resources and time to think about it.

You can randomly generate data, not code.
Terrain is data. Art is data. A level is data.
Code is not data. You can treat it as data sure, but flip one bit and the entire thing changes.
In terrain, if the height is slightly bigger, at one point, its not a big difference.
>>
>>126535306
Gameplay is not code, gameplay are the rulesets, which are transcribed into the code.
>>
>>126535727

but you could have some gameplay "templates" which you can randomize, with randomized/generated variables affecting the gameplay

Or different functions, which can be called randomly with generated variables passed to them

Gameplay is data that we typically hardcode since the gameplay will never change in a game.

In games with fixed environments, the maps are hardcoded. In games with variable environments, maps are procedurally generated. You would just procedurally generate the gameplay by mashing templates together.

What you'd end up is something like a platformer where jump height, speed, etc are all randomized every time, which doesn't sound that fun.

The problem is kind of analogous to guessing which item is in the box that you can't see in.
And there are infinite amount of possible items.
When you generate a random item, the only way to check if it is correct, is to ask a real person.
If you create a bot that can play test your generated games and rate them, the problem gets slightly easier.
But you still need to check an infinite number of items which might not be related to each other at all.
Some problems you can't efficiently solve even with a good evaluation function, if the search space isn't favorable.

>>126536579
Yes, you can treat is as data, but the thing is, you can't really create logical bounds for the random generator.
With terrain you can just limit height, and its derivative to get a smooth terrain. Maybe add some random bumps here and there.

>something like a platformer where jump height, speed, etc are all randomized every time

eew, what a lack of imagination
you could have, for example, mini games which consist of cliking on stuff, moving around to avoid targets, with the controls/levels/possible movements generated

if you sit on a desk and brainstorm for one hour or so I'm sure you can come up with plenty of generated gameplay ideas

>ou can't really create logical bounds for the random generator
How come? how couldn't you limit mouse movement possibilities, define a set of input controls to choose from, limit interaction, etc?...

for example : if controls are mouse > chose between: 4direction, vertical, and horizontal movement > choose between avoid obstacles/click objects > define movement of said objects > define if it's sidescrolling or 1 screen, etc...

If there is a finite number of possible games you can generate, its not really randomly generated.
What you're suggesting is to create a fixed number of games and pick a random one each time.
Maybe a combination of multiple of them, with their parameters random every time.

On the other hand, maybe there is a finite amount of possible acceptable gameplays in the search space in the first place.
Can you think of a unique gameplay that has never been invented? Kind of hard right?
But you can generate a random acceptable terrain that has never existed before easily.

Most games have a virtual environment where things happen. It can be 2D or 3D.
But a valid game is a math game where an equation is thrown at you and you need to calculate it.
A game like this doesn't even have an environment.

But really freesound is free. If anyone ever gives you shit for using something of theirs they posted on there, point out to them that the website is named FREEsound.

Most of them are amateurs with cheap Zoom recorders anyway.
I would respect the people who do good recordings and have put entire libraries on there, because they are doing gods work, but not for the asshats that record their lightswitches with internal laptop microphones.

why are you implying those games will be finite? You can have a finite number of "templates" with an infinity of variation in between them. For any kind of procgen content, at one point you end up having a limited number of possibilities, you can only have pseudo-random, even when generating a landscape.

> But you can generate a random acceptable terrain that has never existed before easily.

Well yeah, generating a terrain is definitely easier than generating gameplay, but it doesn't mean that generated gameplay is not an uninteresting idea, even if it's way harder to apply!

>On the other hand, maybe there is a finite amount of possible acceptable gameplays in the search space in the first place.

When you generate a terrain you are not trying to create something which "never existed before", you are trying to mimic in a very primitive way the way IRL landscapes appear. Your landscape has to follow some rules, like : there must be some ground, the height of the mountains cannot be totally random, etc...
So you are not creating a brand new type of landscape nobody never heard of!

Pseudo randomness doesn't need to be finite. It only means its deterministic in a way.
So if you know the seed, you can follow the algorithm and generate it yourself in exactly the same way.
But in practice yeah, there is a finite number of possible terrains because you're constrained by floating point calculations.
A lot of things would be fun and interesting, but they're just not doable.

That said, i think it could actually be possible to generate a random game if you constrain yourself very heavily.
Lets say the game will always be top down 2D and constrained by 2D physics.
You write a physics engine where each object ingame has a position, mass, velocity, friction, spin, etc.
When generating a game, you basically generate a bunch of object types (not actual objects).
Each one has a sprite, physics properties, behavior (this one is tricky), etc. attached to it.
You need winning and losing events attached to certain object types and interactions.
When you generate the object types, you then maybe do some clever analysis on how objects interact with eachother.
Based on that, you generate a map. That is, actual objects you spawn across your 2D world.
Of course you need to check if the map is actually winnable somehow.
And before you throw your player into this mess, you show him how a winning move looks.

Nuclear throne as the advantage of having better gameplay. Isaac stands up on the sheer amount of items and the variety that stems from it.

Because the base shooting mechanics are pretty fucking dull, and using items sucks seeing they run on a weird charge system that goes by a room by room basis

Anon, "scary and uncanny" no longer exist. They've been driven into the ground by countless failed creepypastas and slender something or another. Anything that tries to look creepy will invoke those and wind up looking, just like you said, goofy and silly. Either make it really subtle or go a different route.

I'd say that scary stuff is best made when compared to a much friendlier environment though. Like, make a game that looks really cute and cheerful, and add some " scary " stuff to it, but really subtle and short. It will have a better effect than going for the full " LEL 2 SCARY XD " thingy.

Pull/yank spell quickly adds force to a physics object without any being applied back to the caster and is mostly just some thing used to grab things that are far away. Yank also lets you flick mouse to move stuff in different directions which is fun.

Grapple is more like a traditional grappling hook that works on physics objects as well as walls and stuff. It's not very good for pulling stuff in unless it's something far away unless you're okay with it just slowly dragging along the ground to you.

what would be an alternative for an inn for RPG(since my game has very few of them, if any)

i worked out, how an adventurer can sleep in settlements without inns. they just pay a little for a random peasant so that he would let adventurer stay at his place over night (this was how real travellers in medieval times did that)

but i need to figure out, how an adventurer would be able to mingle and drink some mead with locals and in turn get quests or listen to rumors

There are three things I consider to be one of the pillars of succesful games.

1. " Awesome feeling ". Making the player feel awesome for basic stuff is one of the ways to attract people to your game. That's why a lot of rage-inducing games like Super Hexagon are famous, because it gives that " awesome feeling " to the players. You can extend this concept to any multiplayer game too, like Counter Strike and MOBAs in general.

2. Choice. Yes, choice is one of the major things that will make people stay. Liberty is one of the things we all search in life, and adding liberty to your game will definitely attract a lot of people. How many times have you heard " Open world ", " Choose your side ", etc in marketing campains? That should prove my point. Also, looking at simple games gameplay-wise like Undertale, who has been incredibely succesful compared to the actual game, really puts in perspective the importance of choice and liberty in a game.

3. Style. Generally, games having a really unique art style make it to the top, because it turns out that graphics is the first thing you encounter when turning on a game. Limbo, Ori and the blind forest, etc ... are good examples of that.

The rest ( story, gameplay, etc ... ) will make people stay or flee, but these points will most certainly make a lot of people tune in and buy your game.

This is retarded. There are tons of games where your choices are minimal yet they are fun to play. I'd change this for variety instead of choice. Choice implies you actively choosing something while variety is something that can just happen if you have a lot of content.

I am not saying that games that don't have any choices are not good, I just say that advertising your game as a game where you can CHOOSE stuff, worlds, different stories, etc ... will often be a succesful campaign because people like the impression of having options when playing a game.

It's not about the graphics itself, it is about Aesthetics. You can make shitty pixelart and you can make good pixelart, just like you can make good 3d or bad 3d art. Those are just different artstyles, but people generally want to look at something that looks good or at least presentable in the respective artstyle. You cannot view graphics just from the technical aspect. And yes, gameplay is definitely more important, but that doesn't mean everything else including graphics are therefore unimportant. Aesthetics do play a huge role for the first impression.

If just one aspect of your game, doesn't matter if music, graphics or gameplay is percepted as shitty, people will often assume you allowed the rest of the game to be shitty too. Always try to make every aspect of your game as good as possible.

Unity gives me an error while building on android
>AndroidManifest.xml:4: error: Error: No resource found that matches the given name (at 'icon' with value '@drawable/app_icon').

>AndroidManifest.xml:5: error: Error: No resource found that matches the given name (at 'label' with value '@string/app_name').

I tried a backup, does nothing. So does reinstalling Unity. Any solutions? I'm pulling my hair over this shit.

>>
>>126557814
it probably means it can't find the image you specified at icon, label, banner and label again.

Maybe you have to import them to your project file? i don't know, i don't use unity.

>>
>>126557814

lol nigga that's because Google Play requires your game to have an icon and a name, how the hell are you going to play it if not. And these things are placed in an .xml file called AndroidManifest. Look for it in the unity forums and you will get your answer.
>>
>>126558212
Previous versions compiled just fine without icons.
>>
>>126558091
So i think you must specify them. They might not be optional.

Check the place where you usually specify these images. See if there is some filename that refers to something that doesnt exist, or if there are none, add something.
>>
>>126558281

Well then try deleting the AndroidManifest.xml and the unity plugin jar but backup first

In Unity, if I want to check if the player is grounded, would it be better for performance to just cast a Raycast below the player or instead use a check on the angle between the angle of the ground and the "Down" vector every frame?

It checks if the player is on a slope that could be considered ground. If it's not touching anything then the grounded bool is set to false since you can't jump while in the air.

what is a simple way to do water and waves in unity?

I tried to read these scientific articles but they're a little too much for me.

Do you basically (this is going to be shit) get each vertex on a plane's height and add a Sin(Time.time) factor to their height and mix it with other global Sin waves that affect more vertex depending on their x-y coordinates?

GTA5's water was fantastic to me but I would be happy to replicate a more basic version of this. I know they probably use a shader for the foam effect on top of waves.

Alright now the player goes to sleep on the first night, which activates the scarecrow spook event in the hallway. I used to activate the scarecrow via the day/night cycle having it just appear on the first night at a set time but this is more accurate to my original storyline script. Now to plug in more dialogue events and build the chase sequence where you chase the Scarecrow outside.

I still kind of want to try and go to school for material science so I can make advancements in the fields of synthetic sex toys. Theres still so much progress that can be made in the field of masterbation and we've only just begun to experiment with robotics and VR stimulation. Its pretty shitty that there is people like this that don't see it as a field worth advancing like any other form of entertainment. tl;dr: it was not another safe way clone like most AAA games go nowadays, characters slowly crept up on you, combat was unusual, all of this was refreshing enough to spark entertainment and gain massive popularity.

this is what I believe one should learn from undertale

It's not that simple.

Sure I can argue with you that they're doing that because they "need" that sex, but who is stopping them to get that sex in the first place? Men themselves.
Ironically the same happens in nature. Males who cannot get females are the one being blocked by the "alpha" of the group.

I mean, think about it. What a woman can do by herself? Heck, can she even survive by herself? From my perspective, women are not the problem, they never were. You can just pick one and have your way whenever you want.
What prevents you from doing so is society and its laws, established and protected by MEN, not WOMEN. For example, women in the police forces are a fucking joke.

Anyway this is getting a bit too much /r9k/ish so let's just leave it like that.

Nigga I've never even asked a girl out. I was always too pre-occupied in highschool with video games and table top games to give a single fuck. Now I'm 24 and just waiting on my wizard robes I'll probably never have sex with a woman, I could buy a prostitute if I really wanted to, but seriously who really cares? As far as I've seen I live with more freedom than any of my friends that have spouses and literally the only downside that exists is some societal shame that exists because apparently if you don't spend every waking moment trying to attract the opposite sex then you're living your life incorrectly.

Meanwhile I can like what I want to like, spend my time how I want to, keep all the money I make for myself, and only be around people that I actually want to be around.

Yeah my bad was thinking of the base, but you can see from here that there is no solution because the whole women thing is still linked with social status and power.
You will always find that one guy try-harding to impress the girls around, or the one who got blessed by nature and is just going with the flow.

Even if you try to have a discussion with them, they'll just give you the standard brainwashed reply "be a man" whatever that means.
Like I said, you'd literally have to change both the laws of nature and society to be able to even think of a solution.

My new game. Basically my take on Charred Engines, who I hope is still hanging out here. I've only just started it, so it's really rough and apparently off-centre, but I made the enemy cars swerve when they see an object coming at them, which is probably going to be an important part of the game.
>>
>>126577559
Sometimes productions do something called a "vertical slice" before alpha where they get the most important features in and take a small piece of the game to a very polished state. Alpha isn't reached until all features are implemented and beta is when all content is in. I think the definitions might change based on the studio.

>The unmarried was unnecessary and I see where you're going with this.
When you said "survive by herself" I assumed that meant "not mooching off a spouse, a parent, or the government" which applies to a lot of women.

Unless you meant surviving out in the woods which the vast majority of modern people regardless of gender can't do.

mark the seam right in the center going vertically.

but you'd have to ask yourself, why would you painstakingly make a mesh for something that you're going to wizz by in a few seconds. do what trackmania did and use a metal mesh

I don't know if you remember, but I tried making that puzzle platformer and it was horrible. I will branch out one day, I've got some sketches for a big adventure game. Right now though, I'm still having a lot of fun with and learning a lot from these little arcade games.
>>
>>126579373
Why so many polygons?
The way to unwrap it is Follow Active Quads. Make sure you reset the mesh's UVs before you do it though.
