Monty Python. Terry Gilliam used to make animations to string sketches together, by essentially cutting up stuff from magazines and doing silly stop motion stuff with it:

There's also some of his own drawings, I think.

The Steam reviews still seem overwhelmingly good - I'm actually considering giving it a try, now. Ten dollars for an unfinished game is still too much, though, and it just isn't honest to not outright state it.

But hey, I'm kinda glad that it's not *completely* ruining the reception it gets. It seems like a kind of panic-induced, idiotic commercial move, like when you dream about having to present a project for college except you have done absolutely nothing, except here it's kinda real.

You mean it could have. What we're looking at now is fraud. Once a person has proven themselves to be dishonest there's no reason to give them a second chance.
>>
>>126480975
The last 20% is the hardest.

It's amazing looking at indie game reviews on Steam and seeing how many are complaining about:
>performance issues in a game that has no business running poorly
>bugs
>missing basic but boring features that every game should have like a graphics menu

A few of those can tip the average to negative, and that can't be good.

- if you want better animation controls, turns out that you need to expand and roll your own in Unity
- if you want better collisions, turns out that you need to expand and roll your own in Unity
- if you want better editing, turns out that you need to expand and roll your own in Unity
- you spend 90% of your fucking time rewriting shit because the default UnityTM functions are either incomplete, useless or buggy.
- only to have at the end a game that won't run 100% performance because of the engine black magic

At this point, the engine itself is getting useless.

you come a cross a door with a broken doorbell. you use the fork in your inventory to make contact so you can ring the door. you ring the door, a shadowy figure opens up and asks you to hand over your fork. if you hand the fork over, the shadowy figure stabs you and it's game over. if you refuse, the shadowy figure steps into the light and is revealed to be solid snake, the person you were looking for. he asks you to come in. if you accept, he uses cqc on you and it's game over. if you refuse, he'll know that you're no russian spy and he'll tell you how to proceed with the game.

Just to inform the general populace. The 'mobile dev' is just another character that everyone's favorite dev has just come up with. This is evident by the various samefag responses, the fact that he started repetitively posting about bull animals right before it started happening, the wild claims with no proof, the reference to /biz/, the reference to /r9k/ and all the "salty", "weak" and "beta" responses.

It's cool that you've decided to drop PP again and make a mobile game, but there are better ways to tell everyone and you don't need to make things up to validate it.

I switched from a relatively high-end Android phone to an iPhone and I never looked back. These devices are supposed to be supplementary to your laptop and desktop--they're not supposed to be general-purpose pocket computers which aren't good at anything in particular. That's the key difference in design philosophies between Android and iOS. iOS is very, very good at doing exactly what a phone is supposed to do. There's a reason wealthy people and engineers tend to use iPhones while poor people with blue collar backgrounds tend to use Android. Android is cheap and it works but it is not particularly high quality.

Enjoy having to reformat your phone every few months if you want to maintain speed and fluidity. (Or having to upgrade every six months. I'd rather keep my phone for a couple of years and then sell it for a huge return on the original price... meanwhile, Android phones are often worth close to nothing not long after launch.)

You probably also can't afford anything better, so I honestly don't judge you, but don't act like your opinion is the only opinion worth considering, bud.

I suggest learning basic programming logic like how a compiler works, what a conditional is, how a switch statement works, etc. Then, move on to important structural knowledge like different data structures (lists, trees, etc) and algorithms (node traversal). After that, learn Object Oriented principals (Polymorphism, inheritance, encapsulation..).

You can do this most easily by learning assembly, then learning C, then learning C++.

Learn Python on Codecademy to get an idea how how programming actually works, like what functions are, what variables are, how things work together, etc. And then learn an engine from the OP, please note that they wont use Python as a language, so you will learn a new language, but learning a new language will be easier when you actually know the basics, which Python will teach you. Unity and Gamemaker are pretty standard beginner choices. Follow tutorials about the engine you choose.

>>126500906
Because round(x)and round(y) are still going to be all over the place. Try some camera smoothing. I think the most basic one is,
x += (y - x) * z;
Where
x = the current position,
y = the goal position and
z = the easing factor represented by a number between 0 and 1;

So you'd have cameraX = (playerX - cameraX)*0.5;
>>

cameraX += (playerX-cameraX)*0.5;

It's not about Unity not being able to do 2D it's about Unity not being able to do so as simply as Game Maker.
Things like Unity's basic 2D platformer tutorial being over an hour while Game Maker's basic platformer tutorial is less than half an hour or Pixel perfect requiring extra code and the knowledge to use it is just an example of how Unity is no easier than Game Maker.

That's because it teaches you how to create a character, make animations for it, add health systems, score systems, add pickups and powerups, add AI to enemies, spawn enemies and powerups, create a shootable weapon, and make a girl orgasm. A single tutorial can turn you into a 2D god. What does Game Maker's tutorial show you? How to make a little cube jump around on some platforms?

So what's the relatively painless way to attempt a transition from 2D games to 3D? I've developed a handful of 2D games over the years that are a mix of rpg/VN/action rpg but it's always ragnarok online-ish style sprites with visual novel style cutscenes. Making a jump to 3D seems like such a massive undertaking that I wouldn't know where to begin. Most likely I'd keep the VN style cutscenes, but everything else would be 3D. The thought of designing the locations alone going from just 2D backgrounds and top down 2D to a fully explorable 3D area is pretty mind boggling.

Ultimately I'd love to just remake an old game from 2D to fully 3D, but yeah, baby steps here.

I guess I'm more thinking ahead of actually designing things jumping from 2D sprites and top down locations to full 3D maps. I can draw 2D sprites, I can draw them in multiple poses for spite sheets, I can draw backgrounds and location assets, etc. But the thought of 3D sculpting those characters and all those locations and actually make them look as good as I want them to be without it being a play-doh nightmare..

Just fuck, I have no idea.

It's less the issue of learning the developer tools and more than actual process of how I'd make the jump from 2D to 3D and make it look as damn good as I know it can look.

I wish this was the year 2390 and there was a software that you could feed it a 2D image and it'll spit out a perfect 1:1 3D model.

I'm sympathizing more and more with the GPL these days. It's pretty smart actually, the only thing it says you can't do is take away others' freedoms to use, study, and modify the software you create.

I believe games are a great place to use the GPL, since you can keep all your scripts and assets entirely proprietary; you're not restricting anyone's freedom to study or modify the software itself.
>>
>>126504374
Your proverb applies to different forms of art where the tool doesn't have anywhere near as much of a say in the end result as it does with Gamedev. You're just saying it without understanding it because you think it makes you sound smart, you fucking parrot.

>Your proverb applies to different forms of art where the tool doesn't have anywhere near as much of a say in the end result as it does with Gamedev. You're just saying it without understanding it because you think it makes you sound smart, you fucking parrot.

No it doesn't, it applies here as well, because a simple sollution exists to solving the problem, yet the problem persist, implying the tool is not to blame but rather the one that uses it. You can't seem to comprehend this parallel, but you're perfectly content claiming I am the one without understanding. I also find it incredibly Ironic you think I'm saying something because I "Think it makes me sound smart" When you've literally done nothing but repeat the term parrot over and over again.

I didn't want to resort to insults but you keep throwing them my way, you're a fucking idiot and just because you don't understand a proverb doesn't mean it isn't right, you're to incompetent to fix your mistakes (If you're even capable of reaching the point where mistakes can be made to begin with) So you lash out at other that claim the tools aren't at fault. Here's a bit of wisdom for you, you can shout and scream like an imbecile until I shut up and you feel like you've won your ill conceived fallacious argument, but tomorrow is another day, and the argument will be over, and I'll still be right and you'll still be an idiot, because you're ready to attack and shit fling at anyone that proves you wrong, you're the worst kind of fucking trash, the kind that thinks claiming people smarter than them are "pretending to be smart" when you don't have the balls to admit you're wrong or the intellect to stop being wrong.

I'm the guy that said Bosnia, the country is kind of fluctuating over who controls it between serbs and bosniaks its a complex political structure that's kind of ruining the economy and making it easy to live with a steady income of few hundred bucks a month, the thing is you have to have that income, jobs are scarce down there, that's what's making everything so cheap. There's not a lot of crime there because majority of cities are the "most people know each other" size. But its not so backwater that it doesn't have infrastructure, the roads are paved, there's water, electricity, internet, sewage, etc... all the modern amenities are there.

First it was "There's a problem."
When given a solution you switched to "But it still happens."
When explained that is not a fault of the engine now you're moving to "But you have to pay for it."

Honestly I'm not even taking you seriously now, because you'll keep shifting the argument until you draw one out where you can win, even though you've lost your original argument, do you want to admit you were wrong on your original point or are you fine being this much of an imbecile? I'm not the guy who posted about that, so I'm not hung up on that specific detail but rather the rhetoric of using the "Poor artist" proverb in your argument, because I see it used so often in discussions where it pertains to kinds of software so complex and different to eachother being used to achieve things so similarly complex that it absolutely is reasonable to blame, for example, an engine or 3D suite for it's shortcomings. When it comes to this kind of discussion, the "Poor artist" proverb is used so commonly as a silencing tactic to defend terrible software in software shitfights that it's starting to piss me off every time I see it.

Okay, slight problem.
So I started learning C# a couple months ago but gave up for God only knows why, and during that time I did a little bit of research into the video games industry (what sells, why it sells, how to advertise, ect).
Now, a week ago my brother contacted me and asked me if I wanted to join a game development studio that he and his buddies were putting together. Naturally none of them know anything about game development and have no idea what they're doing so I refused, but changed my mind after remembering that I work at a fucking Subway and have turned down every opportunity that has ever been presented to me.
Turns out, since I'm the only one who has any sort of knowledge about the industry, team management skills, or technical skill they want me to be the head of the team.
If I follow through with this I will be personally responsible for training, managing, and marketing an entire team of 6-9 people I have never met and probably can't depend on, but at the same time it's probably my last chance to make something of my life.
What do you folks think? Should I bail or stick around?

Do these people have no relevant skills? Can't make art? Can't do music? Can't make sound effects? No coding? Don't know how to shill properly? The drag and drop myth is specifically born from people seeing prefabs and component scripts being used properly in a Unity tutorial. Right and there is no such thing as drag and drop in Unity, it's a myth imagined by people who have never used Unity beyond opening it and closing it once they realize they're not smart enough to learn a new application that isn't a text editor. You can drag assets onto your scene but beyond that you better know how to code otherwise you'll get nowhere.

inb4 this triggers some "all music should be perfectly rigid and quantized" spergbeard

(although assuming by "melody" he means that initial acid pad thing you have going on, he's kinda right, it is a little grating; i wouldn't get rid of it but i'd maybe put a slight low pass filter over it to muffle it a little, or have it dip in and out of the muffling to make it occupy the foreground a little less)

>The leading global game industry software
>The Unity engine is far and away the dominant global game development software. More games are made with Unity than with any other game technology. More players play games made with Unity, and more developers rely on our tools and services to drive their business.
>Forty-five percent market share

I finished the core of my game, but now I can't decide which direction to take it

>story heavy RPG for PC
>significantly more time consuming and stressful to finish, but more satisfying in the end
>if it takes off, I might end up with enough money to make several more games
>high chance that it will amount to nothing since I have no marketing aptitude, no friends in the media, no youtbers to help me shill, no friends in general, and I don't really even like talking to people

>web game (and maybe mobile, in the distant future) with a few RPG elements, but lots of incremental/idle elements that could potentially keep people playing for weeks or months
>much easier to finish and I can provide updates every few weeks to keep people coming back, but not as personally satisfying
>very little need to market since I can just put it on the major web game portals
>even if it becomes popular, the money will probably be piddly shit unless I port to mobile and add microtransactions/ads everywhere (which I'm not opposed to)

what do you think, aggy daggy

Details I neglected to mention because I didn't want to sound self-absorbed or idea-guyish:
>The horror game would try to build on the weapon handling mechanics from Receiver and merge them with 90s puzzles-and-resource-management style survival horror
>The Dungeon Crawler would try to emulate the combat and other interesting features of Dark Messiah and may or may not end up being procedural/optionally permadeath

take some words of wisdom from a wise old man: obsession with tools is a very amateur mistake. you get the same thing with any field you enter. someone makes a good song with a certain synthesizer? suddenly the value of that piece of equipment skyrockets. everyone is asking "what sequencer did you use" as though these things are more important than the creative process. don't get sucked in to this way of thinking. be original, be creative, and use what is best for your particular endeavor.

That's some top tier bullying. That's a lot harder to do nowadays.
Are your game better now?

What happened to that skateboarding metroidvania someone was making? It looked sick and he was progressing like a madman at first.

In loot heavy games like fallout do they really manually place each thing on the map? If not how do you think they do it?
>>
>>126524196
I don't know about Fallout, but I remember reading about the development of Just Cause 2, and they basically just procedurally generated the terrain with trees and shit and just put the manmade structures on top of it.

None. They're all playing Binding of Isaac or AAA games. I can't wait until people get tired of this so it'll be easier to get YouTubers to play our indie games again.

sometimes I kinda feel like this place is 90 % underage kids who want to be yesdevs but aren't and don't realize the amount of patience and perseverance it takes to make something that isn't utter shit.

Once you become a dev you start looking at everything differently.
Don'try to understand losers , they speak their own language.

>>126524196
Haven't played the Fallout games but if you mean like the crap you'll find lying around like coins and shit in TES then yeah, I think that was manually placed. Maybe contents of containers like drawers and such are randomly generated (because you could say that "in this type of container only this set of items can occur") but if you try to do something similar in the open world ("in this area only this type of item can occur") I think you'd have to randomly generate and check a ton of permutations before finding an acceptable one (because a ton of permutations will just be "the whole damn house is full of coins and shit"), it'd be way more work than just placing it yourself, and that's not even counting the time it would take to program such a generator.

I guess you could introduce more constraints to make it generate better results but the time to look through each generated version would still be pretty significant.
>>
>>126524196
Well there has to be something they are spending their 10000000$AAA budget on and its not the quality control.
>>
>>126524618

Seems like he used to play other games before that, pretty sad if you ask me.

RoR.

I think Todd pockets most of it and all the work on the game is done by interns doing it for free.

On a related note I wonder if they ever considered making Skyrim/FO4 on idTech and why they decided not to.

Can't blame them, it's the fastest way to grow their channel. I believe that soon though people will grow tired of Isaac (I honestly can't imagine Edmund plans on releasing more DLC for it, if he does then he's worse than EA), and those channels will have to diversify a bit. And smaller channels who are already diversified might see some growth as a result too, like this guy https://www.youtube.com/user/wanderbots/videos
>>
>>126525035
Isaac already has another EP planned, 'Stillbirth' I think it was called. That's probably the last one though, because it brings in official mod support.

>>126525295
one "expansion" like Afterbirth and one small cashgrab DLC, actually

I'm glad I didn't buy Afterbirth. Edmund is a greedy bastard.

While that's true, I've gotten 180hr out of BoI:R/A, so I can't really complain too much; I've gotten my money's worth and then some.

Been replaced by Rocket League as the "five minutes' break" game though.
>>
>>126525450
some isaac runs can go for more than 40 mins in my experience

I agree that it's a game with a really good value proposition, I just think him and the Nicalis dudes are milking the game too blatantly and in a way that puts me off. Stuff like some bosses HP scaling to the player's damage output reeks of trying to increase gameplay time to me. And I can't imagine what other types of things they're doing to try to keep people hooked in the game for as much time as possible.
>>
If vampire of the sands dev is here: How did you make a Java game steam compatible?
>>
>>126525487
Yeah, and that doesn't include resetting for a decent start either. Didn't make a great game for 'quick' breaks.

>>126525624
>some bosses HP scaling to the player's damage output
If there's one thing I hate about the game, that is most certainly it. If half the fun is getting a ridiculous overpowered build, that just negates that entirely.

>Why is /agdg/ so much more programming literate than /dpt/?
Most programming agdg does is related to if key x is pressed move object by 5 units every real programming task (i.e. something that doesn't yield a visible result in 15 minutes) is deemed to be stupid and no progress therefore shitposting.
