Suicide bomber sounds good/funny in theory, but panic chains make it almost impossible to pull off in practice.

Why did they even keep panic in EU? It's like the one truly bad gameplay feature from the original they left in.
>>
What is the role of a sniper in EU? Since they have effectively global range but cannot move and attack at the same time, should I just leave it behind as the other soldiers go ahead?
>>
>>125949301

Squadsight snipers are without hyperbole the most powerful unit on the field. However, until they get that perk, they're useless.
>>
>>125949301
>What is the role of a sniper in EU?
TO BREAK LOS
>>
>>125949301
The role of snipers is to snipe. Later on they become one of your heavy damage dealers. In EU you can pretty much park a sniper in a nest miles from your squad and as long as he can get line of sight then he'll be able to use squadsight. In EW they added a new enemy type that is supposed to counter that somewhat.
>>
>>125949360
are you okay buddy?
>>
>>125949072
Well, she's not a suicide bomber. With that much strength, you can chuck those HEs a fair distance

As far as panic goes, it actually works really well in the originals, but it is poorly implemented in the new games.

In the classic games it punishes you for losing multiple soldiers in a short time, but can be countered by having high bravery soldiers or a commanding officer.

The consequences of panic chains in the orginal are manageable because you have at least 14 soldiers (vs. 4-6) so you aren't crippled by losing men to running off to die or killing each other with blind fire.

In EU, panic triggers off of just getting hit, and you only have 4-6 soldier so the consequences are super exagerated. Plus, when they panic and shoot at something in the new games, they actually aim at soldiers and have a good chance to hit. In the classic games, they just could actually fire in a direction instead of at a target, so they could and often did fire in random directions hitting nothing. It only gets bad if you give a coward (10 bravery) a rocket launcher.

Long war does it much better by making them hunker, since having an entire soldier disable for one or more turns in punishment enough.
>>
>>125949595
Yeah, fortunately panic is not that common unless someone dies or mutons do their bullshit ability.
>>
>>125949595

I think it's actually worse in EU for the reasons you mentioned, and also because aliens can't truly panic like your guys can unless you have a psionic or a flamethrower.

It was catharsis in original when you busted into a battleship, slaughtered the entire crew without a hitch, and the sectoid commander just starts panicking one turn after another. Then you find find it huddled in the corner of one room and jam a stun baton up its nonexistent ass.
>>
>>125949425
Squadsight manages to be the objective best perk in the game, and yet, is still overrated and too unreliable to be good because of the dogshit level design and rampant LOS bugs. I can't count how many times I've been able to trace a line between an enemy and my sniper with a ruler on my monitor, and yet, the sniper has no shot.
>>
>>125949904
The LOS intdicator in XCOM 2 is one thing I'm really excited for. Hopefully even if bugs are still present that can alleviate a lot of frustration.
>>
>>125949842
>because aliens can't truly panic like your guys can
That's XCOM Baby! Deal with it or fuck off.
>>
>>125949768
It can happen just by getting hit or dying, so a rookie getting hit early game can spell instant disaster. Its actually more common than the originals in my experience, and punishes you for a common occurrence, versus sending your operatives into the meatgrinder.

>>125949842
Oh yeah, I definitely agree its worse in EU (I'm pretty sure my post says that).

The fact that aliens actually follows the same rules is even nicer and means you are actually rewarded when you smash half or more of the aliens in 1-3 turns.

Panic is practically useless in vanilla, Long War brings it back to relevance since aliens can actually panic for their entire turn plus more.
>>
>>125949904

The worst LOS bugs crop up around ramps. Like Loony-Toons-level glitchy. I've had soldiers standing at the top of one, not able to see a Sectopod that's standing at the bottom.
>>
>have a pair of thin mints flanked
>one of my guys crits for fucking 3
>suppress it with the party I used to activate them
>suppressing unit gets poisoned
well that's that, mission's a wash, that unit is guaranteed dead in a couple of turns from poison

gotta love 100% guaranteed damage from enemies, instant kill grenades weren't bad enough I guess
>>
>>125950131
>Long War brings it back to relevance since aliens can actually panic for their entire turn plus more.
It makes psi panic viable as well, since they don't get a bullshit free shot.
>>
>>125950165

also if you want shitty LOS, try xenonauts. That game cannot handle corners.
>>
>crit a thin mint
>it was only 3 damage
>despite having had a perfect 100% flanking shot on someone, the unit gets killed the next turn because LE THATS LE XCUM SHOULDA BROKE LE LOS INSTEAD OF ATTEMPTING TO COMPLETE ANY MISSION EVER :^)

So new player here, just have a quick question I cant seem to find the answer for.

When a MEC stands behind heavy cover, is he out of the line of fire because he cant fire from cover like normal soldiers can?

Thanks.

That's pretty much it. Panic works in the old huge squad sizes/meatgrinder of classic XCOM, but it just doesn't work with small squad sizes where two panicked soldiers can mean half your team loses their term.

Sometimes I wonder if XCOM just recruits from boot camp washouts. oh who am i kidding, that's exactly who they recruit from.
>>
>>125951485
does the Xeno airgame actually get fun? I don't have a clue how far I got as I've never beat it but it was always just spam missiles with my migs and win even against other crafts that can roll
>>
>>125951590
MECs cannot use cover and thus cannot peek corners.
>>
>>125951485
Yeah, I wish they could have improved, but I am glad to see they admitted the new airgame wasn't up to snuff. Bringing back the same airgame would be unacceptable.

>>125951590
He won't peak around the cover, so aliens would have to move around the cover to the see mec.
>>
>>125951625

>>125951676
>>125951590
MECs in fact ARE cover and break LOS.
>>
>>125951485

The airgame was window dressing anyway, so I'm not sad to see it go. I assume all the former airforce pilots are probably filthy scum ADVENT UFO pilots now anyway.
>>
>>125951625
Maybe you shouldn't use the damage roulette option then. Because that's not possible without mods or second wave options.
>>
>>125951646
The Capital ships like Battleships and Assault Carriers require tactics to beat without relying on the auto resolve RNG.

Even 100% win autoresolves are a bad idea in the long run since the planes always end up using more ammo and fuel and take damage they would not have if you did it manually. (And you will late game when the Ayys start sending entire task forces at once.)
>>
>>125951643
>Sometimes I wonder if XCOM just recruits from boot camp washouts. oh who am i kidding, that's exactly who they recruit from.
nah I went to boot camp and the average recruit is a way better shot and handles pressure way better than an XCOM rookie

I'm fairly certain XCOM rookies are just brittle interns pulled from various UN offices around the world and handed guns

ffs in the DLC missions that's literally what happens, that annette chick has no military experience and she gets drafted, and they make Zhang a Heavy even though he's clearly not a big man who should be toting around big guns and literally any other class would be more appropriate to his "work experience"

Is boot camp a good simulation of a combat situation though, against Aliens who are on paper better than you in every way?

No boot camp experience compares to getting shot at.
>>
>>125951646

I wouldn't call it fun, just that it adds an extra layer that the original XCOM airgame didn't have. If it gets old, just use the autoresolve.

For what it's worth, the endgame aircraft wins 100% of autoresolves. In fact it fucks up the UFO so bad it doesn't even leave a crashsite.

XCOM rookies panic when they fucking get sick. I'm pretty sure I've seen my guys panic to mutons outside of their LOS range using Intimidate. they literally wet themselves just at the general presence of enemy units, they don't even have to fucking see them

>Aliens who are on paper better than you in every way?
actually only on Impossible are sectoids even close to on par with a rookie (same aim, same damage output, but worse armed in that they don't get grenades) and thin mints are basically laser-equipped squaddies on Classic (same damage output, 85 aim total, grenade-like attack)

the game just cheats in their favor a bunch and there's an obscene number of them to kill

What if Thinmen are actually the fabled Men in Black? not the movie ones but the conspiracy ones
When the aliens were doing small time abductions or planetary recons for the Ethereals they would send Thinmen to cover it up and take care of witnesses.
Direct contact would maybe lead people to think they were aliens and scare them into believing if they talked they would be the next target for abduction and people watching in secrecy from afar would see someone that looks rather human so they would think its a government agent interviewing witnesses for details.

yeah, so the tooltip says something along the lines that you'll remain concealed if you move from high cover to high cover, but my sniper remains concealed like 50% of the time when operating out of half cover

then the other bit of the tooltip talks about how if the aliens see you initially then you can't operate concealed, which is fair. But I found that if the soldier was already concealed, and moved through or out of enemy LOS, then they would be revealed. I triggered like, four sectoid commanders, a sectopod and mechtoid and a handful of mutons as well because i thought that the concealment would work as long as I moved from high cover to cover,

2. There is a 5th class (that isn't MECs) yet to be revealed

3. XCOM getting psy-abilities is a staple of the series

That there is a good find anon. Though it still doesn't rule out the meme theory that the fifth class is a 'dedicated psyker' so to speak.

We know it isn't MECs, since that class is coming in the Shenmeme DLC, and we know it isn't a Jihadpuppy (as Beagle is in fact Australian) so that narrows it down.

>>125977487

Perhaps so, I might have been stupid to try and take it down. I think I am going to restart this game. Im seeing that perhaps rushing for alien captures is not the best idea? It's quite the heavy investment since it needs a fission plant, 200+20 alloys for the building, and then 100$ for the arc thrower?
>>
>>125977778

During the first month I put my recruits on carabines, tac vest, armor and then either a smoke if they're slow or a flash bang if they have high movement. Works pretty good, smoke the anvil while the hammer swings around and flashbangs and breechs a flank, with the flashbang keeping the aliens from fleeing or landing a good shot.

So, I've started another LW attempt on b15f3 and now I'm about 3 months in.

I've delayed the xenobiology research for a bit, to get beams and other stuff. Now I need 20 sectoid corpses and they don't appear anymore in the missions.

Will I get them again at some point, or am I screwed and should restart the entire campaign?

Sectoids will keep popping up all the way through the campaign. Xenobiology is really one of those things that should be done fairly early though.

>>125950425
It barely handles elevation and multiple levels. Old X-Com had issues with aliens and units seeing into the corners of houses and UFOs, but Xenonauts ups the ante with getting shot through ceilings. Sorry for the dumb question, but is half cover really useless? I've started being braver about moving units to spaces without cover because it just speeds things up and it's not like I can be shot at if I haven't seen anything, but should I just stop caring at all about looking for half cover?
>>
>>126004747
Only in vanilla
>>
>>126004747
Half cover is considered useless in vanilla because it provides a measly 20 defense compared to full cover's 40.

In Long War the defense values are changed to 30 and 45 respectively, making half cover much more viable.
>>
>>126004747
half cover isn't useless per say, but if your using because you don't want your units to be hit, then your going to have a bad time.

It still reduces your chance to get critically hit by 50% and hunkering down in half cover if you can't get to full is a legitimate tactic.

On the subject of cover, once I have archangel, is it better to have my units flying or in low cover?

>The skills in both pistols and sniper rifles allow for some really interesting combinations with the Sharpshooter in XCOM 2. For example, using the Death From Above skill in the sniper tree allows a Sharpshooter to perform an extra action when they kill an enemy at lower elevation. Combine this with the pistol tree skill Fan Fire, which lets Sharpshooters fire three consecutive pistol shots at a single target, and your Sharpshooter can unleash a lot of damage in a single turn.

So I'm playing this for the first time, and I've not played any xcom game before this. Going to play with Ironman on, debating on normal or classic

I found the second wave options and I wasn't sure if I should use any of them. I was thinking about using 'Not Created Equally', 'Hidden Potential', and 'Aiming Angles' because they sounded interesting, but I don't want to ruin the integrity of a first run or anything, if that makes sense. Should I leave them off or?
>>
Is it just me or does Bradford's new voice sound like Lance Henriksen's?
>>
>>126035208
I recommend playing on Classic and without Aiming Angles. On Normal and below the game actively cheats for you and aiming angles has is pretty awkward to use since it only benefits people who flank a lot and flanking is generally a bad idea unless you know there's no more enemies to activate.
>>
>>126035208
For your first run you should go with a regular normal run. You know nothing about the game and what's important so you might as well see how far you get without the AI cheating too much.

>>125995160
>only 3 dead troops

The aiming percentages for your troops are actually higher than they appear to be. A 20% shot actually has higher odds of hitting than 20%.

Yes. That doesn't make it suck any less.
But what you have to realize is any time, ANY TIME, you make a move that is not 100% you must accept that it can fail.
I cannot speak for everyone when I say this but the high chance fails are fun. Like I said before it does suck and I wish it would have but I knew it wasn't guaranteed. The emergent gameplay that comes from failed plans is one of the reasons I keep coming back.

Bad luck on the rolls is just bad luck on the rolls. A 50% chance to hit failing four times is just bad luck and nothing more. You can't really say git gud to probability fucking you over.

I mean you can say he should have did something else but a 50% shot isn't fucking crazy to try and take. There is this weird thing here where if it isn't a 100% it's your fault and you should go fuck yourself and also BREAK LOS before you take your shot.

The chance for each shot is always 50% that is correct. But that chance for four consecutive 50% shots to miss is 1.5%. That is basic fucking statistics. It doesn't matter that it's always 50% but the fact that they would all fail is extremely unlikely.

Failing a mission like that could pretty easily spiral your campaign into failure.

However, if you managed to win after that...

It won't really take that much time to figure out if you can still pull out a win. If you fail the next mission, then campaigns pretty much confirmed over.

Keep in mind that you can replace soldiers no matter how difficult, and the first two months are the most difficult.

and still, watch ayyliums just do 9000000 damage per shot anyway and totally invalidate all your cool perks because there's no actual way to mitigate incoming fire and save a guy from getting killed when they miss their Fan Fire on someone point blank

Technically, it was never fixed in the original releases. Only the PSX version fixed it. You needed UFOExtender or XComUtil to do it before OpenXCom became a thing. It's just that UFOExtender and XComUtil are old as fuck.

The "XCOM IS SO LE HARDCOAR!!" meme is actually from TFTD, because they never fixed the difficulty bug in either UFO or TFTD and just made TFTD's easy mode as hard as UFO's Superhuman.

I hope XCOM 2 has any semblance of decisiveness or satisfaction in it

when I finish a firefight in EU, I almost never feel good about it. it's just a slog, and trying to do anything creative to get flanking shots or overwhelm the enemy with an alpha strike just gets punished with a dozen extra activations. it's annoying that ayys can't panic either, if I vaporize six aliens with a rocket, ITZ snipe another four, and leave two with 1hp each, they shouldn't still be in perfect fighting form and one-shot two of my guys as soon as their turn comes when my guy taking 1 from poison leads to a completely voided out turn from a panic chain

"alien" does not necessarily refer to extraterrestials, it doesn't take a huge leap of logic to go from "ayy lmao style grey alien" to "foreigners in general" when considering real life nations, and plenty of people do believe in various extraterrestial or otherwise non-human forces being behind various events throughout history

but even without reptillians controlling things, it's been pretty common for one nation to approach another with materiel and technology to trade only to use it to get economic domination over the "inferior" country, and while the standards of living may rise under the newcomers' influence, it's not always taken well by the natives. a popular example of this is europeans coming to the new world. while they brought new medicine and firearms and exotic animals and shit, it's not like it was a charity mission and some shit went down, to say the least

I'm done /xcg/. This I/I run is over.

Most of the A-team is fatigued because of a terror mission, then Confounding Light pops up. I send the B-team and clear it out, they sustain a few wounds but it goes suprisingly well. GP pops up right after, and I get ready to exhaust the A-Team. Pretty much no troops are not fatigued or wounded at this point.

Then a fucking harvester comes in, nap of the earth.

I'd expect them to have obedience hard-coded in their genes, but jamming human DNA in would probably mess with that. So instead they probably just get mindfucked by the ethereals' big swinging psionic dicks until any motivation but servitude has been ripped out.

It'd be cool if there was a mission to like, raid an alien production facility and have the option to capture some that aren't fully indoctrinated yet. Baby alien rescue. Xcom base suddenly taking care of a bunch of snek daughterfus, raising them to be humanity's own infiltration units.

Unlikely, though. Unless it turns out that, like, Dr. Vahlen was captured an experimented on and is half alien now, and we rescue her.

Now they've become even more poisonous. They can't just poison you with the Chryssalid Kiss as they did with Enemy Unknown. Every time they strike you, the tips of their claws have a poison on them. You can receive a chryssalid poison effect with any attack. If you happen to die while that chryssalid poison attack is active, then the soldier that died, or the civilian, can then enter this gestation period, and they will become a cocoon. If that cocoon does not get destroyed by XCOM within a to-be-determined amount of turns, then three chryssalids can pop out. We now have chryssalids running more rampant than in Enemy Unknown. They found a way to breed faster, to multiply more. It is very terrifying to now see chryssalids on a mission. Certainly, if there are civilians nearby too, these things can multiply like crazy

Tldr hope your ass is ready for the New terror missions

Selling everything like power sources and nav computers and maybe some alloy and elerium in the first two months is a good idea. It doesn't slow down your development of laser weapons or carapace armor at well and can supply you with enough cash to spam sats to counter panic.

Don't listen to it otherwise, spam as many explosives as you need to to avoid casualties.

So what are the odds that the final mobility upgrade for XCOM is Teleportation? It went Grapple -> Jump -> Flight in EW. So presumably it will go Grapple -> Jump -> Flight -> Teleport in XCOM 2.

Of course that also means that there would need to be an enemy capable of teleportation.

Its more of a micro M134 but it has a folding pistol grip on the top of the receiver, you can see it on the rear of the gun in the folded position in that screen shot
I think its a pretty neat idea. Carrying a heavy machine gun by that grip would be awkward but so would trying to shoulder it with a bottom or rear placed one so they have a grip to carry it like a normal firearm but shoot it with a different and more ergonomic grip.

The only thing I would consider a problem with her is how quickly she powered up, but the movie is called the force awakens for a reason.

If you discount that, she just does all the standard jedi stuff: Good pilot, naturally good in combat, mind tricks, picked up the lightsaber quickly, etc. etc. Star Wars has had the strong female lead in every movie/trilogy.

Otherwise, she would have lost.

Its a bit jarring, though I hope they actually run with it and have more then one character go through the process to push the plot that the Jedi are returning and en mass.

May he now run where no thinmints are overwatching, a scout with magneficent record on fucking up the aliens overwatches, the ayys never see his scottish ass coming or going. sacrificed himself in the chryssalid harbor.

Highest ranking officer, king of overwatch, the anti-flank, endless overwatch, never run dry & friend of the SHIV. Always paired with his trusty SHIVs WALL-E and EVA he has held the line of this Long war with his two hairy italian arms.

Atwal was the rocketeer holding back on the low ground while the medic (my fastest moving troop) was playing spotter. The medic lived, I had him jump over the edge out of the aoe and then he grenaded them (might not have needed that though, was a bit overkill. The cover based grenade would have probably done it), one rocket, 2 infantry shots (one steadied), a sniper (steadied) did them in

This is my current situation, my medic took a shot that was absorbed by armor, my nader Nader wasn't lucky. He's gonna be gravely wounded after this mission. Took a 5 damage shot with only 5 health+2 armor to absorb it

I think the sword is supposed to be a high damage cleanup weapon, not the bread and butter, that still belongs to the shotgun.

Exo-armor gives health, mobility, armor, which is super good for a close in fighter and we haven't seen any of their late tier abilities, or what late tier armor looks like.

Rangers are just better assaults. Running up on aliens is what they do. Also there is without a doubt a perk that makes the first sword attack a free action or giving you a free move after a sword kill. Rangers also have a stealth tree option which helps with the suicidal bit too. Run in chop a guy and then escape into the shadows.

Question:
How many squad wipes before you abandon a game?
>>
>>126125851
>2016

>>
>>126144416
if they're spaced out, you can take a lot of attrition. if not, more than two is probably a mortal blow to your operation... three squadwipes is eighteen soldiers, expensive to replace (not to mention the difficulty of training rookies after the first month or two).

I'm trying my first ironman run and got wiped out first mission of the second month. 4 soldiers - 1 corporal, 2 squaddies and 1 very promising rookie.
It was from a missed rocket (90%) followed by a missed point blank shotgun (96%). I was livid. Couldn't even leg it with my rookie because I was fighting floaters, one of which lifted off and landed between me and the skyranger.

This reminds me of my best squad in Long War.

Andrea "Athena" Santos (Scout), Kaori "Ropes" Shimizu (Medic), Andrei "Flash" Smirnov (Gunner, later on he became my first MEC Goliath while the Gunner spot was occupied by El General), Vaughn "Prophet" Krause (Engineer, who in the end became the Volunteer), Ali "Spitfire" Mourit (Assault) and Albert "Ghost" Bergeron (Sniper).

These guys where the first mission rookies. They survived Zhang's Wild Graveyard run unharmed (Only my SHIV Fun Wagon was the only cassualty), accompannied Zhang furimng the Site Recon, did Confounding Light with 4 turns in the clock and survived both Schrodinger's Ciberdisks in Gangplank. Also helped to retrieve Van Doorn, saved Annette from the Dam, rescued the Furies, and crashed EGGSALT party building.

They ultimately reached the temple ship alongside Zhang, Van Doorn and Annette, and 3 promoted guys from B squad to main squad.

The most awesome of all of them was Mj Sgt. Bergeron, who had a Kill ratio of 3-7 ayys per mission (In gangplank he killed 15 of the 38 ayys), this guy was by far my best sniper, always nailed crits in the most precise ocasions and he always managed to get those 50% shots through full cover like it was easy work.

Sadly he died during the very last base defense just before the Temple Ship assault after some LOS bullshit against the final ciberdisk, but not before killing half the enemy ayys during the mission (specially those uber mechtoids, the uber sectopod and two ethereals) nailing 20+ damage crit shots trough full cover like no tomorrow.

Really? It looks pretty beefy for just being personal armor, and I already got armor from them that I converted to personnel armor.

Pic for reference.

>>126154146
I haven't given pirateZ a shot, I probably will after this playthrough since I finally got to plasma weapons.

Its weird, I capped barely any engineers, so I just had aliens lasers and alloy weapons, and then suddenly after researching tons of navigators and leaders I got plasma research.
>>
>>126154250
Make sure you're using openxcom, it's the only way to play at all now.

Generally I play on veteran or the one above veteran, whatever it's called. The difficulties don't really change that much except for you having to have your shit slightly more together in the battlescape.

Check the options and turn on anything that seems interesting.

When you start, organize your base so you have a chokepoint from hangars and the access lift. In base defenses, aliens can only enter through these modules so if they're separate you're all set.

When you start, sell all your shit except for the stuff you need and buy some more rookies and equipment for them. People swear by autocannons but I don't bother with them, I just give everyone a HE and a rifle and two clips, along with smoke for half the squad. I give another guy a rocket launcher and about 20 heavy rockets, dropping them on the floor in case he gets MCd, and that usually serves me until plasma. Getting 20 laser rifles or so is handy if you're playing vanilla but it's not necessary. You'll want some for sectopods and mutons, though, because sectopods are vulnerable to lasers and mutons are strong against bullets. Explosives are good against everything, though.

I generally don't bother with armor unless it's an important mission. Sure I'll have a full squad's worth of flying armor laying around when it's convenient but the average member of a squad, even if they're a high rank, is simply not important enough to invest heavily in keeping alive unless they're psionic already, in which case they should be sitting in the skyranger anyway.

old x-com is a game of attrition. be prepared to see your dudes die. however it's not particularly difficult if you're cautious, demolish everything on the map if necessary, and aren't scrupulous about keeping everyone alive when one rookie with a primed HE is all it takes to kill a terror unit / something important.
>>
>>126154332
I haven't played in a while, again, but looking at it I think you're right, I think it's above personal armor but below power armor. You could ask on the forum thread for FMP if you really cared to.

PirateZ seems neat but you're in a really precarious position early and I didn't like it one bit. I wanted to get into it because everything in the UFOPedia for it is really neat, but a few things turned me off and I went back to FMP.

The research is weird in FMP. There should be an image of the tech tree in your mod folder if you want to look at it.

The only thing I would add for the combat is that smoke is amazing in the x-com. It literally gives you control over line of sight in mid to big distances. In many maps, if your careful you can completely prevent aliens from ever seeing you on their turn, which as you can imagine is really powerful.

As far as bases go, you need more for sat coverage, but monitor your maintenance costs before expanding. Sometimes inexperience commanders expand to quickly and suddenly find themselves in the red due to monthly costs. In the opening months, feel free to sell pretty much everything you need for cash. If you keep completing missions you will have more materials and weapons then you will ever need (except still be stingy with elerium, some playthroughs I'm swimming in it, and others not so much)

>Pic for reference of building base to be defensible with a chokepoint. Ignore the ships, they are from a mod.
>>
>>126155228
Ought to demolish that small radar sometime, it's taking up space. Otherwise that's a nice base. I always put my chokepoint up against the left border but otherwise it's the same.

>>126154250
Addendum to my previous post, don't bother with the defensive emplacements for your base, you have to build a lot of them for them to really have any effect and it's generally easier (and more profitable) to just do the base defense.
>>
>>126155401
>>126155228
>>126154689
Thanks a bunch for the advice. Another thing, I see you guys talking about something called final mod pack, what is that?
>>
>>126155515
It's an openxcom mod for enemy unknown. You can find it in the mod database on their site. It's not a total conversion or anything but it basically just jams a billion other tiny mods together into one so you don't have to. The basic gameplay is the same but there's more armor, weapons, HWPs, aliens, maps, everything.
>>
>>126155515
FMP is a huge collection of mods that adds tons of new aliens (many from other x-com games, some from xenonaughts, Men in Black, etc.) tons of new weapons, a huge tech tree, also extends out the game. Definitely try it out after conquering a vanilla campaign.

>>126155401
ufopediea tells me that the small radar and large radar stack together to increase detection chances. Is this incorrect?
>>
>>126155712
Maybe I'm wrong but I'd always known (or thought I'd known) that the longer-ranged one takes precedence. Save, check your radar range, and then demolish the little radar and see if it changes, maybe.
>>
>>126155515
One word of warning about FMP:
A problem I'd always had with X-COM was that, especially at the later stages of the game, there are so many options of items to purchase and things to micromanage that I'd end up getting overwhelmed. You've got rookies to put through psi-training every month on the month, you've got ammunition to manufacture and laser cannons to sell, you've got all this shit to keep track of, and none of it is done automatically for you. FMP basically compounds this by a million degrees. In the late stages the game is more about flipping through base menus and making sure you're manufacturing, researching, training, and selling everything that you ought to be with each base. It's really not that much micromanagement but it is like Dom4 tier, I'd say, in the later stages of the game.
>>
>>126155809
Its not about radar range actually, its about detection chances. If you read up the ufopedia, ufos are not automatically detected once they enter the your radar coverage.

Here is the notes directly quoted from the site:

>Every thirty minutes game time, the Large Radar has 20% chance of detecting a UFO
>Large Radar Systems can be improved by adding a Small Radar System to boost the large radar's short range detection to 30%

I think radars only become redundant if you build more than one of each type or once you get the hyperwave decoder.
>>
>>126156119
Huh. I guess that's what I get for skimming through ufopedia. Either way it's debatable how useful that really is, I think the improved percentage would really only turn up more useful if a UFO is like skimming through a small corner of your detection range, that might actually give you more chances to notice it. Otherwise UFOs spend so much time in range that you're practically guaranteed to detect them.
>>
>>126156295
>>126156119
Do you guys like new XCOM?
>>
>>126156295
I agree its minimal, but I think its worth the maintenance costs, plus I'm playing fmp right now, so who knows what kind of values some of these ufos have. For all I know, some have stealth capabilities that make them harder to pick up.

>>126156364
Yes. Extremely hyped for xcom2
>>
>>126156364
We wouldn't be here if we didn't. Don't kid yourself, this is basically XCOM 2012 general, and the people playing UFO Defense and Xenonauts (lol) are a minority.

I love new XCOM, I think it's a great game and I haven't been as hyped for a game as I am for XCOM 2 in a long time. It's fundamentally a very, very different game from old X-COM, though, and I think if I had to choose between the two I'd pick the older, mostly because I enjoy the higher level of customization and options it offers me, as well as the gameplay appealing to me more.
