I finally found the ship with just my MEC and one Support with no medkits left. My MEC did punch off several of them fuckers while my medic sprinted through to the objective.
Only my medic made it out, and he'll be scarred for life. Mentally as well as physically.

UFO was pretty cool, shame they just didn't have the manpower to put into the game to polish it up a little more.

The balance was kind of interesting. A few of riflemen, a squad weapon operator, couple of shotgunners and a scout. Could mix it up a lot.

Admittedly I did my first run of XCOM EW blind and with Long War, and I did newfoundland with a standard style team with beam laser weapons and all I lost was a SHIV. BUT I got lucky as fuck.

I just looked over the two missions Beagle played, in the first (War Hand) he got corpses and the like in his loot, but in the second (the Blacksite) which had an extraction point as part of the mission the only loot was the items his soldiers were carrying and he had to extract his critically wounded soldier.

obviously the solution is we must research the Fulton.

We're talking about vanilla, there's only so much you can do earlygame. It's not like you can trade shots on bomb missions anyways, you have to keep moving.
I think we can all at least admit that EU and EW aren't perfectly designed and the early game when playing I/I, especially when it comes to council missions where staying mobile is the name of the game, can often come down to the game either dropping pods in positions that are easy to counter or getting a few lucky rolls.

Combine that with being stuffed into a venue with other youtubers, Firaxis staff hanging around AND the customization being a tempting distraction when you have so many hours to do a tutorial and the available missions probably made for jitters.

I had the feeling beside of the Donald Frump mistake, anything got well right for him. He was never really anymore in danger, don't forget his 13 HP ranger, who almost never can get killed with this type of enemies. maybe they cheated a bit with that exo-suit and you get it later on and they fight with it early enemies.

If he had only rookies or squaddies, things would be totally different, Snek and MEC's seems pretty strong against 5-6 HP soldiers.

Sometimes I change the nicknames of soldiers based on exceptional sacrifice or mission performance. One of my infantry got crit wounded by an ethereal after singlehandedly wiping his escorts, she now sports the nickname "Corporeal." On another note, I just had an awesome mission. It was on the waterfront warehouse clusterfuck map and I activated the first two pods at once, and the third pod while I was about halfway done with the first two.

I never reloaded; I killed the last sectoid with the last pistol shot any of my soldiers had. It was truly a nonstop action thrill ride.

Hey anons, I finally beat Enemy Within on Normal, my second time beating the game and first time finishing it with EW.

I wanna start a Long War playthrough now but should I go through EW on Classic first?

I will say that the Normal playthrough did start getting very easy around the time I was decking out my soldiers with tier 2 stuff. The first time a Sectopod showed up I lost half my team (including my Colonel MEC Trooper with over 50 kills) and I lost a couple Colonels in other missions but other than that it was pretty simple.

IMO he really shouldn't play with strict screening, yeah it's nice to have everyone have the same start but it makes it really difficult for proper class specialization. You end up with weak psions, slow assaults and scouts, mediocre snipers and infantry, etc. Commander's choice removes the situations where a 59 aim 15 mob rookie rolls sniper or something.

Well first off VIPs actually have -1000 defense, so you actually have to put them somewhere they can't be seen.

And yes its, very possible with your 8 man team. Just remember that drop ins activate when you activate van doorn, and after moving the vip a set amount of distance towards the lz (1-3 times)

Assaulting the large alien spacecraft was fun, that may be a factor in me feeling worn out. Getting my medic swarmed by a alienrapist pod, only to move him out of the way and then rocket+nade and sweep them with the rest of the squad was exciting. As was the 6 outsider pod.

My solution to that is throw Laser/Pulse Carbines on them, Scopes and a utility item. Take them on small UFOs and non-swarming abductions.Only take one at a time and. Use them to finish off ayys and utilize those support items. With the Scope and Carbine that gives them +20 Aim. Even the lowest rookie's aim will at least be 70+. Add Holo targeting then you will have 80+ aim on any target.

First 1-2, its all I can do. I usually try to take a medic/scout, and an engineer/rocketer on thoee easy abduction missions/small crafts to feed those classes kills they won't be able to reliably get on harder missions due to their situational nature. (Infantry, gunners, assault, and snipers make up about 80% of the killing on harder missions aside from kill feeding the last ayys) Plus, engineers can get bonus arc throwers so you can try to bring back more ayys right?

if I didn't give firaxis so little credit, I'd think it's more of an anti-frustration measure than increased difficulty. it should lead to fewer situations where you go from wiping everything on the map except for one lone activated chrysalid in the mist to having to deal with a wild goose chase using zombies as breadcrumbs for 20 turns until you finally find the fucker and can go home. it seems like this way, if one gets let go, it's a lot more decisive instead of just annoying

Plays out differently every time. I would just accept that if you move anywhere your probably going to activate everything. Instead, just pick somewhere to dig in(preferably in or behind the bus) and be prepared for a slugging match. Any maneuvering/flanking will 100% lead to more pods activating.

You already have a rocketeer, so just blow up any cover you aren't using. Hopefully you also have a sapper engineer, though this map is technically "roadway" so you might not have brought one.

The map does suck though, that's all I got.

I wonder if they are going to give two options when capturing aliens. A stun gun like EU/EW and a ranger exclusive stun lance/sword that replaces their lethal sword but gets all the benefits of their sword tree. So you could build a ranger entirely around capturing aliens.

It would be interesting to see a stealth ranger stun build which relies on catching enemies off-guard and stun-critting them. Or hell considering that one of the Sergeant ranger perks prevents them from triggering overwatch and reaction fire just aggressive capture builds.

Terror missions can reduce panic in the country and continent.

Selling stuff and completing missions.

Launching sats will increase your funding, but then you have to invest a bunch to defend them. Always take your home continent first before trying to take a second continent. Even then, your gonna need a big airforce and keep up the with the tech race.

If those are turned off, random fill-in council missions take their place, so you should have the same number of missions regardless of dlc presence. So those two dlc don't have enough of an impact to really change Long War.
(Ok, you get some fancy loot out of Gangplank earlier than usual, but while helpful, I wouldn't call it gamebreaking.) So yes, Long war is balanced without the dlc.

There were a few interesting threads that just went dead, like one working on doing more complex map editing. I think the worst I've ever seen is the SC4 community, because everything has piles of licenses, but all it means is that it's harder to build off of others' work, and a few large packs dominate because they got all the dependencies working; the inner workings of the game are otherwise well understood and all but open source, and so it's easy to make stuff. (People just don't, because it's hard to do so and is easier to just cobble together other content under license and hope it doesn't crash)

Solved this, but now I have yet another error.
As soon I start a new game and I have to choose the starting country for the XCOM base, I see nothing displayed, if I press Confirm, a mission starts but it doesn't load and I end up in a black screen.

apparently, it's not cover. it's a wall element, but not cover.

Hey /xcg/ I was on the xcom website and I found out the images for the newsreel wheren't thumbnails.

Pic related - does that look like an Advent shotgun at all? Mag weapon repurposed by Xcom?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: mag weapons are probably gonna be like EXALT guns in that they're functionally identical to XCOM's weapons of the same tier, but are more stylish.

Alternatively, it might be the new Alloy Cannon.
