So it's not the developer's fault for being unable to make a game with physics that properly adjusts weapon placement to account for the character body options that the game provides? Okay.

Literally when did I ever say this? Stop inventing arguments in your head and putting words into other people's mouths.

I want the devs to fix clipping and weapon shouldering physics issues.

If anyone wants to remove options, it's that anon who keeps talking about the devs "intending" you to play this and not that and all that shit coming from his/her mouth.

Better than my problem.

Always convert to MLGS build, or a typical faith build with a weapon min. requirements.

I do this in DaS1 way too much. I made a Giantdad, then a str build, then a dex build, then a quality build, etc. I have like 200 hours in the game now and I still don't even have half the achievements either.

>>125571043

Tanimura did great work on DaS2 though. The DLCs and the entirety of Scholar of the First Sin's changes/additions were all him. The fuckups were mainly the other director, Shibuya's, fault.
>>
I'm going to be disappointed if the plot of DaS3 turns out to be "eldritch lovecraftian oldgods from beyond the stars" like in DeS and Bloodborne. All of Miyazaki's games end up like that it seems. The rumors of extra-dimensional shit in DaS3 makes it seem like that will be the explanation for the the series. Again.

Demon's Souls doesn't need a sequel, the series has left it far behind.

Speaking of Ash Lake, how did a chunk of surface land from the Age of Ancients end up as the deepest area underground in Lordran?

What do you mean?
>>
>>125574971
>we want the monster hunter audience
>oh wait, nevermind, lets just make all the bosses into bulky, armed humanoids like my OC monhun character
His influence was pretty terrible. Like he clearly didn't understand what made souls games good or why they were so acclaimed and more popular both overseas and domestically than his own pet franchise and just tried to force everything through his dragon quest-style japanese high fantasy RPG lens.
>>
>>125575746
The world of DaS1 in the Age of Fire is built upon the canopy of Arch Trees sprouting from Ash Lake. The Lords built the world and their kingdoms over top of the previous world.

Supposedly, DaS2 takes place so far in the future that this canopy has collapsed and the world the Lords built fell back onto the Ash Lake World.
>>
>>125575746
ash lake is the base. lordran’s soil rests upon the branches of a tree. you can see a bare branch from the graveyard looking toward the catacombs and you can see the roots of the tree in the firelink chamber. inside is the kiln of the first flame, where fire came to be, the place you go down to from the tree in the intro cinematic.
>>
>>125575746
Na, I think the Age of Ancients happened entirely underground. The archtrees hold up the world.

I think the reason the Lords waged war against the dragons is because humans originate even deeper underground (I think the Kiln of the First Flame is the lowest (geographical) point in the entire game) and wanted to make their way to the surface. The grey world of the dragons was in the way though.

Presumably Ash Lake is all flooded now because as time passed more water trickled down from the surface world and flooded the world of the dragons.
>>
>>125575884
I'm really sick of this "dudes in armor, gaem is so bad!" meme. Yet another example of hypocritical criticism pertaining to DaS2 in areas that were exactly the same in DaS1.

Tanimura's influence was fucking excellent and he single-handedly salvaged DaS2 from a 2/10 rushed piece of shit into a 7/10 worthy entry of the Souls series. This is fact.
>>
>>125575884

>>
>>125576134
>>125576145
>>125576148

Makes sense. That would explain a lot of things if DaS2 is in the same location as Lordran, devs that scrapped the original idea for DaS2 half-way saying otherwise be damned.
>>
>>125575884
>we want the monster hunter audience
The Shibuya that worked on Dark Souls 2 is not the same Shibuya from Monster Hunter. In Japanese characters, their names are spelled differently.

Just like how there are tons of people named Robert Johnson that aren't all the same people.

I haven't heard this theory before. I mean, I've always believed that Drangleic is in the same place as Lordran but I haven't been able to give a good explanation for why the landscape is so different other than "it's a fantasy world and literally thousand and thousands of years have passed." 5 favorite Souls series bosses? I'm including Bloodborne because it clearly is a Souls game.

1. Orphan of Kos
2. Manus, Father of the Abyss
3. Great Grey Wolf Sif
4. Father Gascoigne
5. Fume Knight

Yes, I've played Demon's Souls too, but none of the bosses are top five worthy for my tastes.
>>
>>125576635
Actually, that was just a mistranslation on the part of the interviewer (which was a gaming magazine, big surprise). Tanimura basically said something to the effect of "Dark Souls 2 is a whole new world, don't expect your knowledge of the first game to help you here," which was explicitly to assuage some accusation the interviewer threw out that being a direct sequel would imply recycling world design from the first game. The interviewer then took that and turned it into "Dark Souls 2 is set in an entirely new universe and is not connected at all to the first game."

And, of course, people bought it hook, line and sinker only to be unpleasantly surprised when the game released and was chocked full of connections to the previous game.

It wasn't in the original iteration of the game (remember the very first, and only, Shibuya interview with the North Pole / South Pole comment, meant to show that Lordran was the Northern Land of Giants in Drangleic's time) but when the game was reimagined, they added elements that would make it as Lordran as possible (stuff like the boss of the Blue Cathedral, the 4 great beings droppping Lord Souls in NG+, the Lordvessel shards, the whole Manus fragments plotline, were stuff added at the last moment).
>>
>>125577235
>his involvement with monster hunter was used as a promotional line.

Yes...because the journalists who said this immediately thought that they were the same person and didn't bother to check the Japanese characters to see that they were different people.

Someone on /dsg/ pointed this to me back before Dark Souls 2 even came out. I'm on my mobile so I can't be assed to copy and paste Moon language characters (or to even find the sites that contain their names in JP), but they were different.

This is the proper way to do things, to be honest.
It ensures that all of the on-release issues like pre-release megamules, region restrictions not working, multiplayer matchmaking not working, game breaking bugs/exploits/imbalances, network stress issues and the like can be testes and found in a contained environment and then fixed on the international release patch.

DaS2's approach with a global simultaneous release caused problems both with the servers being able to handle the volume of traffic and the the sheer number of issues that only emerged on release when millions of players had their hands on the game but desperately needed fixing, such as NPC questlines breaking, phantom criticals and major imbalances like CMW MLGS.

There were no weapons that could feasible make use of it in the network test. The only 'long handle' type of weapon in the test was the spear, and spears didn't have a sweetspot in DaS2 because fromsoft loved the idea of an extremely fast, long-reach weapon with strong tracking also not having a sweetspot up close when it was already faster than most close-ranged weapons. The spear did not have a sweetspot in DaS3.

Also, sweetspots weren't in Bloodborne and since they're using that engine for DaS3 and Miyazaki apparently dislikes the mechanic, it probably won't be in.

This isn't something that you can see by simply using the "plain English" text. You need to actually read the Japanese characters.

Aava is similar to the other 4-legged beast bosses. Don't lockon, roll past their swipes to their bellies and hack their hind legs.

The difference is that Aava has 3 moves against this tactic

So watch out for these attacks, leave some stamina for rolling out after chopping him a few times.

>>
>>125579546
It's never actually impossible, it just becomes progressively more lenient the longer your roll. For the most part, stickstabs are only possible when the person makes a bad or stupid roll. How fast you have to be to punish, and what situations you can punish are larger the less distance their roll covers but even a 69% roll can consistently avoid stickystabs so long as you don't make a stupid roll, and even sub10% rolls can be punished for making a stupid one. Most people prefer sub50% because it gives you more leeway and makes you safer against russians, BRs and aussies but it's not absolutely necessary.

It isn't like DaS1, where fatroll can't escape BS chains and midroll can't avoid rollstabs with half of the weapons in the game. Stickystabs mostly just punish players that roll preemptively when there opponent isn't do anything or rely excessively on rolling to move around and reposition. If your character isn't close by and in neutral (eg. not performing any action or locked in any animation) when somebody rolls, you can't stickystab them.

I can't speak for the activity on the PS4. I only have the PC version. On the PC version, at least, the DLCs are all invasion and co-op hotspots, though I imagine that the recent BB dlc would have siphoned most of the PS4 souls fans off to that game. If it's any consolation, the DLCs each have a plethora of uniquely obnoxious npc invaders. From took a note from how their players behaved.

Still, if you enjoyed the base game, then scholar will definitely be worthwhile for the dlc alone.

>>
>>125580531
>>125580767

I've noticed that with the music too. Dark Souls 1 had some energizing or creepy boss music for most of the bosses while in 2 it was like the composer was trying to put you to sleep or subtly tell you that he wasn't really into DaS2.

From DaS I remember the Gargoyles theme, Sif, Biggy & Smalls, Gwyn, Seath, and Pinwheel.

In DaS2 there's Nashandra and Sir Alonne.
>>
>>125581351
Sakuraba hasn't been into any game since he went back to working on like 7 OSTs a year. Fortunately the DLC composer Kitamura, who incidentally is the DS3 composer as well, gives significantly more fucks.
>>
>>125581351
That's probably just your preference, guy.

Music fades to the background when you are focusing on not-dying, whereas you hardly notice it at all when you walk in and blow up a boss in seconds. What songs you'll find 'memorable' will vary based mostly on which bosses you struggled with.

For example, I was stuck on the smelter demon for a good hour on my first playthrough, and as a result this is one of my favourite songs in the franchise, right alongside O&S https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mz1_3az6Hgs
The fact that the music is timed perfectly to hit its climax as he enters his 3rd phase is just perfect.

>>125581930

>>
>>125581351
>or subtly tell you that he wasn't really into DaS2.
Sure you're not projecting your dislike of the game's soundtrack to the composer?

In my ears, all the SoulsBorne games OSTs have about a handful of extremely memorable tracks with all the rest being either okay or just forgettable.

Many, many months ago, I posted a review of the Bloodborne OST on /bbg/. Here's the short gist of it: The songs that I think are top tier are Omen, The Hunter, Darkbeast, Micolash, Ebrietas, Lullaby for Mergo, The First Hunter and Moon Presence. That was in my "top tier." Some are okay tier and the rest are completely shit tier.

The descriptions I used for three songs I considered shit tier (Hail the Nightmare, Soothing Hymn and Celestial Emissary) were all the same: "BORING attempt at an atmospheric shit that is just completely forgettable." That's because I couldn't find anything to say about them. I listened to them 4-5 times to review the album after playing the game through once and was completely dumbfounded by how boring these tracks were.

My views on all the Souls OSTs are similar. A handful of good songs, some mediocre tracks and tons of shit tracks. In the Dark Souls OST, so many of the tracks are so same-sounding and just blend together with those oppressive Gregorian chants, with some exceptions like Gwyn or Moonlight Butterfly.
>>
>>125581930
>The fact that the music is timed perfectly to hit its climax as he enters his 3rd phase

I liked the Ruin Sentinel track too but it didn't actually do this. The only game in the series that did this kind of thing with the music was Bloodborne. Unless you want to count the first 5 seconds of Nashandra's boss fight where it played a song that was otherwise cut from the game.
>>
>>125582308
>music hits climax of track according to phases

More games need to do this. Not just Bloodborne or other non-Souls games like Metal Gear Rising or Monster Hunter.

Why don't more games do this?
>>
DS1 had some really intense music, which worked nicely because the bosses were great, and hard to beat. The problem with intense themes is, if paired with bad bosses, you'll remember that boss mostly by the music, and not by the experience as a whole.

As some anon pointed out a few days ago, music is supposed to enhance the experience, not become it. I love the intense themes in DS1, but they surely wouldn't work very well in DS2.

>>125582308
Smelter's 3rd phase is on a timer. If you don't do enough damage to trigger it, it happens automatically around a minute into the fight unless it's delayed because he's trapped in a long animation. If you go into the fight at around the damage output the area is designed for, it takes you about a minute to trigger his 3rd phase anyways. There's a couple themes that were like that, synced up to an approximated pace the fight would take so that they would climax during a phase change.

It's obviously not quite as good as BB's system, because the music only matches one pace to the fight and going in with a strong weapon or a weak one will cause you to lose that sync. I didn't really like how jarring the transition could be sometimes in BB -like sometimes it just cuts the song off abruptly to start the 'climax' song.

What Thrusting sword should I go with?

Estoc has nice reach, and is this hybrid Rapier and normal sword. The strong attack is a slash, which gives them more options.

The rest have really short range. Ricard's Rapier has great stats, but short range, and low durability. Should I go with that?

And Balder Side Sword is CLEARLY a god damn rapier. Why isn't it?

My current setup:

>Richard's Rapier
>Bandit Knife
>black bow of pharis
>wooden shield

I personally feel like the music direction has improved over the years, but maybe DaS1-tier angry, ominous "OOOH OHHO OH OH" chanting is not really my thing. Felt sorta same-y, save for a handful of really melodic tracks like Moonlight Butterfly's theme or Gwyn's theme.
Some of the DaS2 music tracks were really fucking bland, but those that are good are better than the DaS1 ones in my opinion. Pursuer (it will always remind me of Jaws), Raime, Velstadt, BIK and Alonne all have very cool themes. So overall I'd say that DaS1 is a bit more consistent in quality, but DaS2 has more good tracks.
And by the looks of it DaS3 soundtack's gonna be GOAT, just check out the main menu theme. It's a lot more intense compared to the other main menu themes, which is very fitting for the last game in the series. Reminds me of NIER soundtrack a bit, even.

Use the BSS if you need to do a lot of damage. The 2HR2 does about as much damage as the halberd 2HR1. Use the Estoc for everything else.
>>
>>125583076
Estoc for something more versatile. You'd want to upgrade to Ricard's when you have high dex since it has B scaling.

Thrusting swords can attack with the shield up. That would make BSS quite OP considering that its stab is nearly the range of a spear.
>>
>>125583280
Some of the music in these games only really work in context of the fights they're in, as well. Like, I wouldn't listen to Raime's theme on my phone or something but in the fight itself, the heavy, regimented, march-like drone of the music and chanting complements the oppressive atmosphere of the fight perfectly. It's a high-tension fight and the music adds to that tension without distracting from it.

I'd say that Taurus Demon is memorable in the same way. The loud, aggressive chanting suits what is really the first proper boss fight of the game and adds to the intended feeling of intimidation from a boss who's brutally, mechanically punishing to new players in melee.

The problem with Taurus Demon's theme is that the leitmotif is extended throughout several of the bosses in the game, but it only really works once because after you beat Taurus, the prospect of facing off against a large badass demon stops being intimidating. In fact, in general the bosses of DaS1 stop being these scary, seemingly insurmountable challenges once you become more comfortable with the controls and combat of the game and it stops being this big mysterious entity out to kill you. Some bosses, like Capra, are still mechanically challenging, even for experienced players, but they don't carry that same sort of intimidation factor that their music seems to be drawing on.

One of the big flaws in DaS1's soundtrack was overusing those motifs along some bosses when the style didn't really work for the atmosphere of that particular boss. DaS2 did a better job of keeping its soundtrack varied, but wasn't always successful in matching the atmosphere of the bossfight or doing so in an interesting way. I still think that a lot of its BGMs don't get proper credit because the bosses that they were tied to were shitty, even though the music itself was good. Though, at the same time, it seemed to let you down when it actually mattered as all 4 of the Great Soul bosses had mediocre themes.

800k would probably be most populated at Iron Keep or Tseldora. Unfortunately neither of those places are popular for summoning. You can try Earthen Peak by the 1st or 2nd bonfire to catch latecomers, Shaded Ruins bonfire to catch people finishing up their greatsouls (and, if you're lucky, pick them up again at the 1st Tseldora bonfire and then again at the 2nd), Iron Keep's first bonfire and hope you get something that isn't a ganksquad and the Sinner's Rise bonfire to catch people who saved it for last or just overleveled.

You might even find activity at the stairs to Drangleic Castle or its 1st bonfire, but that's unlikely.

Unfortunately, most of the lord souls areas after the first part of the game don't lend themselves well for summoning (eg. the fucking entirety of The Gutter) and the fact that you can do them in any order tends to make consistent summoning brackets impossible. On the bright side, once you reach the 1-2 mil range, you'll be able to co-op everything from Iron Keep to Dragon Shrine to Nashandra to the DLCs.

I really don't think it will matter. DaS2 was bad and I still got over a thousand hours out of it. Weapon arts already look like a more interesting combat mechanic than powerstance was and we've only seen a handful of movesets. As long as they don't make it an excuse to cop out on standard movesets and still have unique and fun things like Santier's Spear, IKUGS, FUGS, and the BK weapons of DaS1, I'll be happy. My biggest worry is that they'll use weapon arts as an excuse to recycle every normal attack between every weapon of a class and 'unique' or 'special' weapons will only have a slightly different L2 from one another, and not have anything with actually unique or hybrid movesets like Syan's Spear and the Loyce GS or cool special effects like the IKUGS. Projectile-firing special attacks are neat the first few times, but when every special property is just a projectile attack, it gets kind of lame.

I feel like DS2 improved a few movesets, but killed the essence of it. In DS1 you could connect attacks in a lot of ways, and that added a lot of versatility to every weapon.
>>
>>125586732
That only really applies to pvp. You don't need a well-rounded build to pve, especially for co-op. Base vigor and adp with 99 str is viable in low-mid SM co-op, as is pretty much every other ridiculous thing you can come up with.

The 150 meta is silly but it's convenient that people stop there as it fixes their SM in the drangleic castle range for the remainder of the game and makes co-op matchmaking easy.

>Thrusting swords can attack with the shield up. That would make BSS quite OP considering that its stab is nearly the range of a spear.

Yeah that. That's why they made it a straight sword. They considered maybe giving it poorer stats, but then the Estoc already fills that role. A BSS rapier would be a weapon without flaws.

Dark Souls 3 will probably have some fags like Solaire, Lucatiel, Fake Blue Magic Sword Guy, etc. who show up in multiple places and help you out.

To be fair though, DS repeats boss themes a lot, so you are more likely to remember themes like asylum demon's (which is repeated in taurus and stray's fights) and moonlight butterfly (which is repeated in gwyndolyn's fight and is thematically similar to sif's fight theme), but yeah they are generally better than those in ds2. The only fight theme I can remember off the top of my head is the one that is played in ruin sentinels/smelter demon's fight, and it isnt even that good imo

have you watched his "world record" run? There were too many segments where his run path wasn't optimal. Granted that run had a lot of favorable rng, but with equally favorable rng and correct pathing, one could easily shave off 10-15 seconds. When frames matter, so does proper pathing.

I just watched his 45:17 run for a few minutes and it looked optimized to me.
>>
>>125594495
The problem with souls speedruns is that, once the optimal game path is set, the largest time variance comes from boss RNG. A lucky run will save you several minutes over an unluckly run and most decent WR attempts (as well as the current WR) have both good and bad boss RNG all throughout, but end up with a good average. That's completely outside of the player's control and it's the reason that they don't concern themselves too strictly with optimal run pathing or corner-hugging. Perfect running throughout an attempt might shave off 15 seconds, but you'll lose 50 if artorias decides to jump back too many times and save a full minute if you manage to get solid RNG on O&S. In the end, the minimal time you save by pathing world geometry perfectly just doesn't matter, and the meaningful deciders of time are boss fights and skips. This isn't like a lot of older game speedruns where pixel-perfect movement separates one run from another. The randomness is actually probably a bad thing for competitive speedrunning, but from what I've heard a lot of speedrunners like it because it keeps runs interesting and results in fewer resets.

Quick, /dsg/, you're been picked to determine what armor sets unique to their respective Souls game to make an appearance in Dark Souls 3, this is to include Demon's Soul. Disregard guaranteed appearances such as the Elite Knight, Knight, Wanderer, etc. Due to constraints though, only 5 sets from each Soul game will be implemented.

Some people need to reexamine their definition of 'bad'.

Just because it wasn't as good as DaS1 doesn't mean it's bad.

Anyway, I have high hopes for DaS3. I think they will improve the gameplay even further. However, I doubt they will manage to top DaS1 when it comes to character design and environments. Nothing will recapture the sense of awe and wonder of being transported to Firelink Shrine for the first time and having a beautiful, grim and dangerous world to explore...

>>125600469

What's /s`?
>>
>>125601101
Their problem is in their design, really.
Mother mask is a straight multiplier to HP, and since HP is an important stat for any build and it's more beneficial the more of it you have, there's never a good reason to not use it.

Child mask could either be good, because stamina regen is incredibly valuable under every circumstance, or worthless, because there are better stamina regen options and they don't stack.

Father mask is either a must-have because the increased carryweight is a build-enabler and allows people to skip points in endurance for elsewhere while still achieving the same roll and poise breakpoint, or it's never worthwhile because you don't stand to gain anything from, saving those points in the first place.

They don't carve out niches or force the player to make meaningful choices, they're just straight up min-max stat providers, either always being a must-have or always being useless depending on game balance. Having penalties wouldn't really change that (they already have the penalties of low defense and no poise), because it'd still remain a binary of either being a net gain and therefore compulsory, or not and therefore worthless.

It's more than likely that the corpse you find the Wolf Ring on in the game is Marvelous Chester, especially since the location the corpse is at appears to line up with where he is in the DLC.

If I run up to the one on the right, it's very random if he pulls out his sword or keeps firing. Last time he kept firing at me eventually knocking me off.

Trying to bow fight them is hard and ends in me falling off.

Fuck this part so much.

I tried that and he can still shoot me.

>>125611228

>Just get close to them

My instincts in an area that small are to block. Which pushes me back. I see him drop the bow, but the pushback makes him go for the bow again. Then he keeps firing his bow even if I'm close, which kills me.

And even then, especially wish pressure I'm not great at parrying. Plus I've mostly forgotten the timing from the last play through.

>>
>>125614076
Roll doesn't happen until you let the button go, not on press.
This is so the game can tell whether you want to roll or run.
>>
>>125614076
It's practically a game mechanic at this point. Not to mention in most cases your commands are queued up so if you roll but you're mashing roll and suddenly realize you need to STOP ROLLING BECAUSE YOU'LL DIE and stop mashing it you'll roll anyway.
>>
>>125614119
Use your handaxe, faster, less stamina consumption, and they are weak to lightning (so weak that a lower ar weapon than a chaos club with +10 humanity does more damage than the club). That's the same exact thing I hear from everybody else but whatever floats your boat, guy. I'm not sure about the damage without infusion, but infused it's still super high, backstabs for a ton, kills anything that's not 20/20 with ripostes. I think the sin penalty only affects scaling. It will show you that the weapon has 0 AR but you will still be doing ridiculous damage.

10 removes any scaling or ring bonus. This still leaves an elemental LSS with like 680 AR.

Pic related is an LSS without sin.The penalty isn't negligible, but it's strong enough at base damage to be stronger than other ultras anyway.
>>
>>125620998
It may sound obvious, but getting more health makes things a lot easier
My first playthrough I had a pathetic amount of health because I didn't know any better, but my second time through as a tough knight I beat them easily just by tanking their hits
>>
>>125620998
You're not fighting two guys at once. You're fighting one guy with a friend who wants to scrap but is always late to the fight. Make distance until Ornstein lunges at you, dodge and take a hit, rinse and repeat while Biggie keeps running around out of breath like the fat fuck he is. Then when he gets supercharged the only thing you need to worry about is the ground pound and you can even roll out of that. ezpz. Take the fight slow. Don't take a million years because you keep dying, take a million years because you got it right with minimal error.
>>
>>125620998
Fight unlocked, try to bait them into standing attack combos rather then let them chase you. If you want super ornstein, grab smough by the beltbuckle and get him to buttslam or standing 2 sweep combo. Keep rushing in and out of ornsteins trigger range for his standing combos and punish smough.
If you want supet smough, stunlock ornstein or bait out his standing combos and punish his shitty recovery while dodging smough.

If you need clarification, let me know. It always sounds easier than it really is.

Or just summon solaire and let him be a distraction. Its so much easier.

Smough has low poise too, doesn't he?
I just played through for the first time in years, my zaphander stuns them both. I thought killing Smough was easier because he's a bigger, slower, more predictable target, and fighting any boss 1v1 is piss easy.
Honestly, other than the
>dude in armor with sword and generic moveset

Oh god this delectable slice of wife again.

For backup I'd just go with something your main weapon lacks which I'm assuming is a ranged poke, so maybe a rapier or spear. Lance if you're not quality.

Return to Undead Asylum is pretty rushed to. There's no lore logic for:

>2 black knights from Lordran, outside Lordran and in Undead asylum
>a corpse with Priscilla's doll in it

And they just sorta threw a bunch of flame hollows groups around without much thought.

I don't mind the Stray Demon fight, as the original demon was a tutorial fight and thus gimped, so this one is the real fight. And that fight seems pretty integrated into the game better.

Would have been nice to have gotten a key and explored more of the place too.

So I'm done with my first sl1 run and it was fun 10/10. Solo, melee only, no pyro or consumables. Currently doing ng+ naked with calamity ring on, but it's more tedious than fun since you die in 1 hit to pretty much everything.

Any other challenges I should try? Not necessarily horribly difficult, but fun/rewarding, like using specific unique builds or whatever. All I could find similar was about using different weapon upgrades or no healing, which won't make much of a difference if I have the calamity ring on. Also ranged/pyro/spells are lame so none of that.

There's other merchants. Undead Merchant sells a few unique things, like chain mail, repair power, and orange soap stone. But killing him nets a nice Katana. So you better honor his memory and use that thing. Dex 4 lyfe.

Who knows, maybe by the time you got back there it had gotten much colder, causing the undead to seek heat for their decomposing flesh. As for the Black Knights, what do they exist in the world in the the first place for? There's no reason they couldn't have traveled there. The doll is absolutely gamey though, even with a lore explanation it just feels REALLY fucking gamey compared to the other two things.

The boss and oscar are nice though.

Look at his animations. He pets the air. The way he talks about Yulia makes it sound like a pet, not a sword or woman. It's probably his dog he had in life. The undead merchants are half hollowed and are totally losing it. They're like a month at most from going full hollow.

>>
the theme of the npcs is that they're all doomed sooner or later. Weeks, months, years, at most. Most of them going hollow is basically canon. They only do it after you buy everything from them so that it doesn't hurt players.

None of their lives matter and the player has bigger things to worry about.

>>125631169
>if what fails? his mission is to guide them to die in the catacumbs and go back to firelink

If they somehow manage to survive the catacombs and come back, like Rhea did.

Hell, maybe Petrus and Patches work together as bros? Notice he was the only one not thrown into the pit.
>>
>>125631615
>>125630839
>>125631169

So Petrus and Patches are part of the undead "church" which is really just a processing facility to trick undead into going off to the most remote areas possible thinking they're fulfilling some mission, kill them so they turn hollow and are doomed to linger in that area forever, and repeat.

>>125631938

>>
>>125631938

Nobility and members of the church who turn undead are lured to Lordran and given an impossible mission as a means of getting rid of them. Petrus is the church representitive whose job is to guide them on these impossible missions.

He himself is undead, but he gets humanity, souls, items, etc from this and stays alive.

The missions might have started with sincere intentions, but now it's implied as just a means of getting rid of undead.

Every boss is doable on your own and Pursuer is among the easiest being a 1v1 fight. Just get a grip on those rolls. His long-range lunge attack where he thrusts with the sword is able to be parried too but I wouldn't try unless you're confident.

>>
>>125635051
with infused upgrade paths, you never have to worry about your buff ever running out of it's timer, though generally the +15 with a buff has better damage output for that one instance of combat. It's important to consider when all of the good weapon buffs only have one cast per bonfire at max effectiveness.
>>
>>125634549
Summoning is lame. Try not to do it if you can, that way you'll be way more satisfied when you finally learn their shit and beat the bosses. The first time I fought Fume Knight was with 2 summons that rekt his shit immediately and I still regret it because it's a great fight and it would have been such a cooler experience beating him alone for the first time.

As for pursuer, if you're ranged, good luck with that, bud. Melee is pretty easy/fun. Just dodge under his attacks (and to your right iirc) and block only when you know you're going to get hit and have absolutely no chance of dodging (as a last resort). Dodging is the key to his fight.

But yeah, basically git gud tho. It's the first proper boss in the game that requires skill to beat so you basically have to get used to how the mechanics work in the game and learn proper stamina management, dodging etc.

I'd say it's worth it, it's not like it's a hassle to install. It also tells you how many players are in another world so you won't get surprised ganked and things like that. Banishing cheaters is also done with one key press and there's some forms of cheating you can't pick up just by looking at the guy like if he has edited weapon stats or something.
>>
>>125636641
you cannot black crystal out invaders, only people you voluntarily summon, or yourself if you are in someone else's world.

If you want to prevent online play altogether, just stay hollow or disconnect from the internet. To stop cheaters specifically, however, you need watchdog. The mod is also helpful to let you know how active the game is at the time you are playing it

>>125636641
Nah it's not necessary. Only if you play the game for PVP exclusively. You only get invaded if you're human (and extremely rarely too), and since you'll be playing it for the first time, you'll be hollow pretty much the entire game, unless you want to summon for help, but that's lame and unnecessary. But if you still want to summon people like a huge coward loser, then you can get the mod because it tells you the number of players online so you know at what times you can summon.

But yeah, basically don't worry about it until you beat the game once and want to go into pvp.
DSFix is essential. The rest are only if your game still somehow runs poorly or you're not satisfied with performance/looks.
>>
>>125637027
It's kind of hard because of one very specific patch that somewhat altered the nature of the lore.

I'm talking specifically about those two NPC dudes that appear in Dark Anor Londo outside of the O&S room. One of the NPCs is a big dude, while the other is a small dude. Some have said that these could be the puppet masters controlling the illusion of O&S.

However, there is one problem to this theory.

In the vanilla game, you could kill them again and again. In fact, they were a very good place to farm for souls. BUT a later patch removed this ability. Once you kill them in the current game, they die for good. Two completely different lore implications based on two different game versions.

So I don't think these folks have anything to do with O&S.

I'm pretty sure it's got something to do with your HUD settings in DSfix.ini. Disable the HUD modifications (set it to 0, pic related) and try then.

If it's not that, then maybe it's something to do with the resolution and scaling. If you didn't follow a tutorial/recommended settings video/whatever when you installed it, do that. There's something about setting the game resolution to a certain scale in relation to your monitor, but I forgot exactly. You should find it on YT though.

Pretty much. Coop should be about having fun with other people, not depending on them to help you cheat your way through the game.
Fighting bosses with summons should feel like you're all way under leveled and you should have to rely on strategies as a group. It's the most fun in Bloodborne because it's so fast and technical instead of backstepping with your shield up, but that doesn't help the super easy difficulty problem.

Not him, but I agree. I've never, ever liked the runback to the boss fog. It doesn't make the game harder. It just makes it more tedious. Repeated runs back to the boss doesn't teach me how to fight the boss better. It just teaches me how to run through enemy mobs better. Bad checkpoint systems just hurt games.

No summoning, mate. Do it the proper way. Either stack up with heavy armor, flame ring, pyromancies, and so on like a huge loser or be a cool guy and learn to dodge properly.

An easy strategy is to back away from him until he does the big jumping attack and then you roll under it, attack him once (or twice if you can stagger him), run away and repeat.

I disagree. The run back to the boss is part of the challenge and actually one of my favorite parts, provided the level has decent shortcuts discovered by exploring the make the trip back quicker and easier.

However, I think greater care should be taken to ensure that we don't get another boss run like New Londo ruins where you have to either go through the entire area again.

> backing away slowly while everyone takes turns at aggroing the boss.
So you back away somewhat more quickly while everyone takes turns at aggroing the boss. Please. I've done my fair share of BB coop. Don't try to make it seem as if the game requires more technical skill from you than the other Souls games. It doesn't. At least not while in coop.

Single player may have the hardest PvE of the franchise, but the coop is just exploiting boss AI for better survivability (no differently than in Souls coop), which means waiting until the boss has turned his/her attention away from you to heal (although there were plenty of moments when I popped up to 2 vials in front of Logarius while he's looking at me and he didn't punish me).

Big weapons are kind of ass in PvP if you aren't extremely good with them and if you try to play the poke game too much at medium range the host can just turn around sprint away and chug, so get a fast weapon and pressure the fuck out of him

>The run back to the boss is part of the challenge
How so? Part of what challenge? The boss? It doesn't teach you anything about the boss's move set and how to overcome this move set.

I don't learn anything about how to roll dodge or space myself against Gwyn's sword swings by angrily running past 4-5 dumb Black Knights at the Kiln.

It just adds tedium. Just like some of the bullshit checkpoints in Bayonetta or The Wonderful 101. Or the pre-Special Edition Devil May Cry 3 where dying meant that you restarted literally at the start of the goddamn level. How is any of this "part of the challenge"?I'm against any of these runbacks. It's a dated game mechanic.
>>
>>125642389
>MIA, likely dead
But he's returning in DaS3.
>>
>>125642481
Not that guy but the only real argument is that it teaches you to git gud at the game in general since if you take damage and need to heal its less healing for the boss.
That being said I don't personally care, if they keep boss runs in then I'm fine with it but at the same time I wouldn't bitch and moan if they were taken out
>>
Why couldn't Gwyndolin lead the Silver knights out of Anor Londo, kill the undead plague, seal off Demon Ruins and restore order to Lordran?
>>
>>125642481
Instances such as that are what I would consider the game doing the boss run poorly. If there's literally nothing but empty space or sparse enemies, such as the Kiln or most of Dark Souls 2, then I agree - that is tedious.

However, I think it takes a lot of skill to make it through certain parts of the area without taking too much damage and still be ready to face a boss. Shortcuts that make the boss run easier encourage exploration. It's why finding a shortcut in Dark Souls just as you're about to fight a boss is particularly rewarding.

This "I don't like DS2 so its ok to make up lies about it" thing is getting really old by now.

>So you back away somewhat more quickly while everyone takes turns at aggroing the boss.
Pretty much. I just think the speed factor is interesting and it changes the game quite a bit. I didn't say it's revolutionary or anything, but I think it's a cool twist on the whole "slow and steady" DS approach, especially on the way the player is supposed to think in certain situations, such as when you're being attacked by a mob.
The fact that boss fights are faster and require more attention already makes it somewhat harder. You can't have situations when you fuck up, lift your shield up as a last resort and hope the attack clings off, for example.
>>
>>125643213
The run to the Looking Glass Knight is just a hallway with some obnoxious enemies thrown in. This isn't challenging or interesting, it's tedious and lazy.
>>
>>125643108

Undead die all the time. Any number of undead NPCs can be killed and you find the bodies and get their stuff or the vanish forever.
>>
>>125642748
>However, I think it takes a lot of skill to make it through certain parts of the area without taking too much damage and still be ready to face a boss.

I'm sorry, but it doesn't at all. What you end up learning to do is pick the path that aggros the least amount of enemies or you exploit the AIs the way you do in Resident Evil games.

An example of the "path of least aggros" is the runback to Artorias. You die. You return back to the sanctuary bonfire near the mushroom NPC. You run back, you run up to the daytime forest you hug the right section of the wall. You aggro nobody. Then you go to the elevator, down to the area where the Arty arena is and fight him. You just wasted at least 2 minutes running and not fighting the boss.

An example of the "Resident Evil style AI exploit" is the runback to Firesage Demon. You run past the fire-breathing dragon statues, running past them before they even get a chance to breathe fire and then run underneath the crotch of the Taurus Demon and get to Firesage.

There is no boss where the runback ever feels challenging, Or, more importantly, meaningful. All the runbacks always feel tedious.

>burt ivory king
Not even that far away, again I don't get what you trying to say by listing them

So what was your argument again?
That the bonfires are a long distance away and have sparse enemies or that they are a long distance away with nothing? Regardless
Because out of the shit you managed to list only 2 of the 40+ bosses in DS2 had that.
The rest were literally the opposite of what you claimed, since they either had quite a few enemies or were really close to a bonfire.
Ready to admit that you were being a retard and just want to bash on DS2 because that's what all the kool kids do or do you want to get told some more?

Okay, you have a very valid argument here. However, I don't think the solution is to just spawn you in front of the fog door. I think they should instead attempt to engage the player with interesting boss runs and routes. I don't like the idea of just throwing you right in front of the fog door like that. Instead, you should be able to activate a shortcut that loops you back to a bonfire at the start of the level and connect you directly to the end. It should rely more on good level design than just giving you a free checkpoint.

The problem with DS2 isn't so much that the fog gate is too far from the bonfire - it has more to do with the fact that I, personally, don't find many of the boss runs interesting or well designed.

I don't get what this has to do with it, the enemies there are kinda sparse sure but I don't see how its relevant to the point at hand since you can fight 3+ at a time if you fuck up along with the ring wearing phantoms.

So with this said the 2 of you managed to name 3 bosses out of the game that have long boss runs that are empty or have very few enemies. 4 If I am being kind and count the 2cat fight.

10% isnt "most"
You two need to list 20+ bosses to actually get that and we both know thats going to take mental gymnastics that are out of this world.
Now once you are dont with your hyper critical DS2 shitposting go look and apply the same shit to DS1's bosses and they would all fail your incredibly specific test made up just so you can shitpost about a game you don't like.

They haven't confirmed anything. The net test invasion system was basically right out of bloodborne. Your eye orb worked the exact same as the sinister bell and could only invade hosts with phantoms. You had an HP penalty but access to half of your estus as both invaders and phantoms.

In order to summon, you needed to be in ember form, which is the new human form. It works just like in DaS2, with a 1-time use consumable that puts you into that mode until death and can only be used when you're not in it already. In the net test, you were non-ember by default and gained a large portion of bonus max HP when you entered ember form.

The host could summon up to 3 additional white phantoms. At 2 phantoms or less, there could only be one invader, but if the host had 3 phantoms then they could be invaded by 2 reds at once. The pace was such that it seemed that 4-man squads were prioritized over other groups for invading, so you'd get double invaders almost right away most times. If an invader killed a white phantom, then every invader in the host's world would get 2 of their estus and ashtus restored and I assume the reverse was true was well.

Due to the prevalence and ease of healing, there was that familiar feeling of facing a BB ganksquad, where doing any meaningful amount of damage to any player would cause them to immediately backpedal and chug behind their allies and there was mostly fuck all you could do about it.

Hopefully they'll keep the whole 'if you have x# of phantoms, invaders start pouring in' thing because that made it easy to set up group fights, fcs and the like. I can see that just being a generally solid system for a group looking for fights. However, they really, really need to do away with the whole 'only co-op hosts can be invaded' thing because it's a crock of bullshit.

Thinking about packaging all these into a "Mod starter pack" for ease of installation.

Is there a reason for making things like Titanite Slabs so rare? It's not like it would make you overpowered to have a lot of them, provided it's at the right point in the game. Giving the player certain tiers of upgrade material is all about when they get it, not how much of it they get. Feels like the scarcity of the higher-level stuff just punishes players who like to switch up their weapon of choice for some variety every once in a while.
>>
>Ring of Favor and Protection

>>
>>125647804

The idea is that +10 is easy, but you have to be picky with whatever you put to 15.

But the whole upgrading system is stupid and doesn't really need to be. It needs to be streamlined and simplified. A lot of it boils down to busy work for the player.

Gameplay reason I guess. Strictly speaking, he should turn into a corpse, and respawn as a hollow at the next bonfire or area reload. And then respawn every time.

Him and other NPCs who go hollow vanish from the game if you kill them.

All the Black Knight weapons are baller. But it's best to just play around with everything and find what you like - for going through the game it doesn't really matter what you use.

>Just beat O and S. What weapon is good for a first time playthrough?

You've just beaten the hardest pair of bosses in the game. Everything else doesn't compare. Whatever you just used, you can keep using it.

For weapons, tiers are mostly just about what weapons are great for pvp and pve. Those that can do both well get lots of praise. If you care only about the standard game, then basically anything weapon that doesn't outright suck can be used to beat the game if upgraded.

>Are any of the straight swords any better?

Shortsword and Longsword are nice. Versatile moveset.

Balder Side Sword is a nice Dex sword with reach, moveset.

Estoc is a great rapier.

I thought that Quellag was way harder. Those damn legs. Always got stuck in between them when she oneshot me with her stupid fire moves. And that Lava Discharge. No idea how I beat it. He kind of just fell off after I hit its hands.

Souls is a game that gets easier the more knowledge you obtain. That's why.

It's never been a game series that has been purely about skill in the sense of needing high motor reflexes and finger execution.

There's this old saying that knowing is half the battle.

Well, in Souls/Borne, knowing is 80 percent of the battle. The other 20 percent is making your you have at least more reflexes and finger coordination than your senile 95-year-old grandpa.

There isn't. It's just part of a dated mechanic called "RNG-based resource farming" that Miyazaki and the rest of FROM stubbornly keep in the games.

The people at FROM (and other RPG video game companies) think it's fun for players to gamble on getting drops for items that have single-digit drop-rate percentages.

I hope this mechanic disappears in the next generation. The current generation of developers still have a lot of old farts who stick steadfast onto these old RPG mechanics out of a romanticized form of nostalgia for the good old days.

A better way to do resource farming would be to make it skill-based instead of luck-based. I've mentioned this many times before but I think a perfect way to turn resource farming into a skill-based endeavor would be that you can only get 100 percent drop rates if you kill enemies a certain way. Like maybe by having the finishing blow be a 2HR2 attack. Or maybe you can get a 100 percent guaranteed drop if you beat the enemy containing the rare drop with zero damage and within a certain time limit. There's plenty of ways to remove luck and RNG from the equation. Nobody like praying to RNGeezus for drops.

>>
>>125654940
Those sound very easily accomplished. That would have flown in the nineties before GameFaqs, but now all 100% drop techs will be available on the internet probably even before release and suck all the challenge out.
>>
>>125654940
That doesn't make sense realistically though. It's not like the way you beat an enemy should affect whether they were carrying the drop or not.

Even if it sucks, luck is the most "realistic" way to do rare drops.
>>
>>125654940
That's retarded. Having to use a 2HR2 requires no more skill than having to spend more time farming. If more people got ezpz Balder Side Sword drops because they read online that it was a 100% guaranteed drop if you kill a Balder Knight with a backstab or something, the entire game balance would change radically in PvE and PvP.

Stop trying to fix what isn't broken.
>>
>>125655031
>suck all the challenge out.
What are you talking about? The challenge is still there. You still have to work to get those drops. It's just that it's based on your SKILL not on luck. What challenge is there in getting lucky? Sometimes you might get the Titanite Slab within the first 2-3 kills if RNGeezus is feeling good. If RNGeezus is feeling cranky, you'll only get the drop after 2-3 hours.

>It's not like the way you beat an enemy should affect whether they were carrying the drop or not.

It's much more reasonable than leaving it completely up to luck.

Old-school action games often have these "trials" where the game sets some rules and you have to stick within those rules to accomplish a certain goal.

Like in Devil May Cry 3, one of the side trial sections require you to beat about 5 projectile-spamming enemies without taking damage so that you can get a health-increasing blue orb as a reward. Another trial section requires that you get creative and stay airborne for 20 seconds through any in-game means necessary to get the same exact reward. Another trial section requires that you kill a dozen enemies within 60 seconds to get a reward.

What's wrong with incorporating similar skill-based elements to Souls? Why would you want to keep the RNG instead of getting rid of it?
