Are you fags too retarded to understand that shitty obtuse systems don't turn good from "getting used to it"?

For the record I've been playing DF for years but I'm not blinded fanboy who claims that anyone has a working brain to see complete lack of proper UI is just a newb.

>how would you make it better then? The current system works very well if you just memorize some keys

The _system_ works. It's fucking great even. It's implementation, however is not.
The worst general offenders:
-Some menus really need a reorganization.
-Information on a lot of screens is presented in a suboptimal, sometimes downright unusable way (liaison telling you what happened, personality and injuries screens, the minimap is virtually useless)
-Keyboard controls are horribly inconsistent
-related to menu reorganization: streamlining of some often used processes. Constructing large projects is a nightmare of usability, and often used actions in adventure mode (manual combat, looting corpses after butchering, conversations) are nerve-wreckingly cumbersome. There must be a way to improve those instances without simplyfing the gameplay mechanics (i.e. what you'd expect from someone throwing around the word "streamlining" when talking about video games)

I'd outright murder Toady if at some point he gets rid of keystroke-combination menu navigating. It's the most effective way to navigate menus and I hate that not more programs use it.
At least there are browsers and text editors that are optimized that way.

Also, just to clarify, I'm not whom you've been talking to, this is my first post in that conversation.

not him, but I've never used a tileset aside from occasionally getting a square ascii pack, and I'm too lazy for LNP so I just play the standard.

The UI is shit. I'm not proposing a better one, and I think half the fun is navigating and learning the confusing complexity of it. since it's so fucking unintuitive. you have to unlearn everything you know about menus and standard game controls to enjoy this game. and that's fine.

Holy shit this new version is incredible

Travelers are visiting my fortress and stopping by for a few drink
Right now a troupe of goblin dancers is performing in my tavern
Mercenaries are actually talking with my people and telling them stories about their lives
Dwarves are praying in temples built to their gods, and their children are playing with lead toys. I don't even mind buying instruments, toys, mugs and crafts from the caravans now, knowing that they'll be put to good use

Hold me please
This is what I've always missed in DF
The world is so alive now
>>
>>124611507
While Toady still lives, Dwarf Fortress will continue to develop.
There is no truth but this, death, and taxes.

The last few years saw one of the most important updates to the game since the addition of the third dimension:
All of the calculations for the progress of history continue during active play. The world no longer enters stasis; it has been made alive.

>>
>>124611985
The mercenaries should requires their own rooms but other than that it's great.

It makes me really hopeful for the first parts of an economy update, like being able to have travelers make requests for specific goods in exchange for coins or other valuables.

Neat.
I wonder how often you would need to reset the chamber, though. I'd suppose part of the art to playing it is keeping the pressure steady with a foot pump of some sort, while also working the keyboard, and songs would be made with certain capacity langguds in mind.

Alive, and with this last update... FUCKING BATSHIT INSANE!

Walk into a tavern, imagine "bard" and "poet" were "crips" and "bloods" and laugh at the gang warfare ensuing.

Stroll into a library, marvel at the books, and don't worry about the blood splatters or bodies over in the corner... it just kinda happens sometimes.

Stroll into a town keep and wait a minute or two... $50 says a vampire pops up out of nowhere, runs inside and goes "OH SHIT, WRONG DOOR, MY BAD" and hauls ass away, or a bunch of bards and poets run in and start punching/stabbing each other/everyone else.

Did you know you can fight while you're dancing?

You might ask why that matters... it will come up at some point, trust me.

Did you know you can dance while you're fighting? See above.

>Human caravan rolls around

I like to think that wasn't a coincidence and my anti-elf propaganda genuinely helped. Also, it'd explain why the elves also got pissed at us and declared war on all dorfs. Which kind of sucks, because I was in the process of temporarily murdering my FPS to build an underground tree farm just so I can chop down enough for them to declare war on me. Now all my effort feels pointless.

Holy shit, there could be magma floods? Thankfully I don't invest much time into character creation, or I would be pissed.
I found the exit, though. Looks like sleeping/waiting makes the water go away for a short while, so that helped. I hope it works with magma like that too.
>>
>>124613610
Seen it a couple times in 40.24, you should go see if they respond better now.

When I went there and was like "Hey, THAT BITCH OVER THERE IS A VAMPIRE!" they were like "oh yeah, but it's cool cause she's in charge" and when I called her out she kept spitting at me.

Actually got her to spit on other people in the room by standing behind them (amusingly had this happen recently when I accidentally murdered someone and pissed off a town, random citizen spit at me while a soldier was walking past and she blocked it with her shield!) but nobody would do anything about her being an obvious vampire.

Even got her to attack me and nobody did anything.

>>
>>124613890
Not intentional, but yeah, world-gen forts bug out and sometimes you get shit like the lower levels flooding with magma, random magma in the tunnels.

I've opened a couple of doors and got a magma bath. The best was just recently spawning on top of a fortress and it collapses in front of me because the central ramp shaft was right in the center of a volcano which was full up to like two levels below the trade depot.

Hey /df/ I finally started to learn how to play, but what should I do about my refuse stockpile all the way to the left here? Captnduck says I should make it accessible to the surface, but what if it's not under a natural slope? Surround the entrance with constructed walls and have a moat+bridge to keep enemies out?
>>
>>124619230
From looking over all the instruments I've seen so far, it looks like he made templates based on historical instruments (to wit: bagpipes, the hydraulis, simple percussion instruments [eg. drums], keyboards, wood/brass wind instruments, etc.), then wrote procedures to randomly vary these templates into derivative instruments, with random selection of materials for each component drawn from a fitting list.

Yes, the poetry and dancing contributed in hilarious ways.

Behind the scenes there is a whole new level of activity and richness going on in the worlds.

The little people running around now?

I feel bad killing them, they have little hopes and dreams and friends and do things and have their own shit going on.

Sure, they're retarded in many many many ways, but they feel much more like little people than the rather obvious stand-ins from the last version were.

When you talk to someone, you often have to follow them around because they go about their business on their own schedules.

No more buildings full of people standing around saying it was inevitable.

Now it's buildings with people coming and going and carrying shit around and talking about what they're doing and what they've done and asking how others feel and getting in fistfights and stabbing each other and coming to each others aid when a zombie yeti busts into the library.

That shit is fantastic, but kind of a pain as a vampire, cause isolating someone without everyone else finding out about it isn't as simple as it used to be.

I'm not aware of a way to increase contact range. It's shorter for necromancers than civs anyway (10 tiles instead 30). What you should do is increase the number of civs.
Necromancers happen when a god of death grants a slab to a human or dwarf obsessed with his mortality. The more civs you have, the more chances for human or dwarf civs to gen with a god of death. More gods of death means more slabs passed out, which means more towers. You can increase the number of secrets as well, but that doesn't help unless you're already hitting the cap on secrets anyway, which is incredibly unlikely if you aren't already doing what I suggested above.

On large regions, i get 4-5 towers usually spread far away from each other, sometimes so far away there's no other civ in contact.

I regularly find lungfish chilling out in mid-air... so, they just don't give a fuck.

So, did I mention I love the libraries and general chaos?

I don't think this happens, though. The demons might occationally murder some of their subjects, but that's just a custom in goblin society. In older worlds, there are often cases of demon masters getting murdered by gobbos, as well.

>order all troops inside after raising the gate and closing it
>As trolls get closer to entrance two of the humans run out to attack them and buys enough time for everybody else to get inside
>they killed around 10 trolls by themselves but were eventually pincushioned to death
>look in tavern notice Tobul is "ready to leave now" and runs to the empty bedroom of a future king that had an engraver smoothing shit out
>squad lets their racial prejudices and anger over losing two of their squad boil over and marches to the bed room and kills the poet (was drunk and mad so i ordered it)
>engraver doesnt even turn around and keeps smoothing the floor around the blood pooling
>Tobul is buried by a dwarf in the catacombs next to fallen dwarves, undoubtedly he would have seen Tobul perform in the tavern and now carried his body away (btw he was a great poet and sang in the style of the dwarves and all his shit was "inspired")
>meanwhile the Mayor doesnt get a mandate met and orders the beating of like 15 dwarves including a baron in exile

The can only move in the cardinal directions, though, which will look weird as heck for living creatures.

I think the vehicles in Cataclysm is a very good example of how multi-tile creatures/vehicles can be implemented into a tile-based game, while still having the possibility to move in all directions. I don't know whether Toady has played Cataclysm, but it is widely known that he has played Pirates of the Western Sea, which uses a similar way of controlling ships(he'll totes use it in the boat arc).

They don't drink booze(at least not in the previous versions. the tavern update may have changed that), meaning they'll slow down and changing their descriptions accordingly, even if booze is available.

If they lose a bodypart, the bodypart inquestion will have the vampire's true name, instead of the fake identity that the vamp goes by in your fort.

They are often former members of lots and lots of organisations.

This one is perhaps the most obvious evidence: fter the vampire has killed someone, it will have a bad thought for seeing them die, yet, unlike everyone else who witnesses an unnatural death, they won't report it. If someone has seen the body without reporting it/becoming a witness, they are certain to be the vampire.

>A dwarf is wandering the caverns and then decides he's going to go do some bookbinding, which I had ordered done. So... he starts stepping in the webs left by smaller spiders. One web after another, as though they were solid rock and I told him to dig (actually in a very similar pattern to that). He continues to step in and destroy every nearby web until he gets stuck, at which point he gets the "No Job" status and starts to walk back home - until he remembers he's supposed to be book-binding. He then turns around and starts jumping in webs again.

>The randomly generated string-making jobs for some instruments were also affected.

>Old saves are always going to be wrong, unfortunately, so we'll probably have duplicate reports for a while even after 0.42.03 goes up. People can edit their save raws to fix bookbinding, but the generated string jobs can't be fixed.

Over the last few days, I fixed another world gen crash, the crash from retiring certain locations and the crash from sleeping in inns. I've cleaned up the issue with the dwarf militia not using armor correctly, and a weird instrument duplication error in adventure mode. I also stopped bookbinders from trying to use webs (thank Knight Otu for that one -- you can add NOT_WEB below the thread reagent in your saves now if you want). Modded wood furnace reactions are listed properly now.

It's slower for me. And worldgen is a lot slower. In .40 I never saw the calendar for an entire minute in a medium world after .40.06 or so. Now it takes 2-3 minutes. And I could fly through 400+ year worldgens in about 3 minutes, now it's taking almost 10.

I am the only guy with working ears on a team of 4, 3 of which cannot speak at all.

You get by, people basically fill in the blanks themselves, and if the worst comes to the worst, you just spell most of the word and people will get it.
for example, if you were trying to sign Procedural generation, I would sign computer/random/creation or computer/generation or something similar and most people who dont live under a rock will understand.
IF you get the odd thing that this doesn't work for, you can just spell it out. but in 99% of cases people already know the term you are trying to refer to, you just need to let them know what you're thinking.

I think people who are more fluent in it would probably know signs for "procedural" and shit, but I only really know the bare minimum.

Look, Anon, the game distinguishes between "streams" and "brooks". While the former are deep rivers that you can only cross by swimming, the latter are shallow and walkable. The "7/7" is just a way of making the mechanics work.
>>
>>124689986
>Is this happening to anyone?

Everyone, liaisons like to hang out in your fortress now you have taverns and shit for them.

Brooks have been like this for years, sounds like it's your first brook.

It's really been a while since I've played this and I wasn't too used with the distinction between a brook and river. Wish I had a real river.
Now migrants arrived and there's a baby just crawling alone towards my fort. I wonder if they'll resist the waters as fine as an adult.

Too worried about food right now. Cuntish first caravan trader didn't want profit lower than 500 and left without dropping any food.
Now I'm desperately gathering any fruit left under the trees just to be safe.
>>
>>124690539
You should be fine, with surface gathering it's stupidly easy to get food and booze now.

Still not actually made use of that to build a surface fort, it'd be nice in Kobold Camp.
>>
>>124690539
Gathering fruit is a good way, since it yields infinite alcohol with minimum effort.

In antipication for the next caravan, you should chop a few trees down and turn them into spiked wooden balls at the carpenter's workshop. Spiked wooden balls, like all trap components, fetches a ridiculously good price.
>>
>>124690638
Plant gathering is OP, all food production is OP

Damn it, I was so excited to turn my fort into a popular tourist destination, like a little resort for travelers and pilgrims and what happens? The goblins declare war on me and the elves declare war on fucking everyone, so now every nation is at war with someone else and I'm not getting any damn visitors. COME ON! I was actually looking forward to not murdering elves on sight for a change.
>>
>>124694939
Why not make a mercenary experience for tourists?

Turn the surface into a themepark where the theme is constant unyielding bloodshead of your enemies, and make a nice tavern with lots of windows.

Has anyone figured out what affects book writing speed yet? Because all I've gathered so far is that having more scholars and having a shitton of books to draw inspiration from speeds things up a bit. Any idea if the scholars' stats do anything? I know intelligence and creativity help with other artistic jobs. Or the size of the world and history? Because mine seem to only write books about stuff that's happened in the fort, regardless of how long I've let the history run.
>>
>>124696424
Personally, I think that the writing process works like a "mini-mood", which occurs randomly.

From bay12. Mystery about cats dying in taverns solved.
>Tavern floors are often covered in alcohol due to splashes, which then cover everyone in the tavern. Cats have a self cleaning interaction that also lets them ingest syndrome causing substances, like forgotten beast goo. This coincidentally includes alcohol and the effects of inebriation. This means cats covered in alcohol will clean themselves and get drunk, due their small size and the [SIZE_DILUTES] tag for alcoholic beverages, they're very likely to die from alcohol poisoning.

>At about 1:30 a.m., a family of hippos, represented by light gray H’s, swam into the tunnels from a nearby river. Their arrival was an unintended development born entirely of the game’s internal logic. Tarn was pleased. “The hippos like the sewers!” he said. Military dwarves would carry the barrel to the barracks with them and drink there instead of having a drink in the stockpile. If they were given orders while in this process then ale went into battle with them. Sometimes used as an effective bludgeoning tool. I traded away an +obsidian pot+ with three kills on it once in .40.24, felt bad man.

Milidwarves are usually strong as shit, so it doesn't slow them down. And they don't (didn't) carry them back, so if you weren't paying close attention or running out of stockpile space then it would just look like they had gone for a drink and went back to training.

>>

invasions seem to actually happen, some faggot had a 300goblin invasion two days ago

Yeah I think he fixed it. I got two goblin invasions in my last fort.
The first one was weird though. It was tagged as a vile force of darkness from a goblin civ but it consisted of only enemy dwarves. Felt kinda bad slaughtering them. The next siege was normal.
Might wanna wait a few days, though. Dwarves won't equip armor (besides shields) at the moment, it's getting fixed next patch.

All embarks have caverns and magma.
dig deeper
>>
Man, this tracking system is actually pretty neat if you want to hunt or something.
>>
>>124716858
If you embark in unremarkable places, like grasslands and forests, the max will only be a limited number of z-levels deep. By default, most maps end abruptly about ten levels down, making it impossible to dig any further.

Only if you embark on mountains(preferably close to volcanoes) will you be able to dig all the way down into the caverns.

Just be careful down there, or you may encounter hostile goblin fortresses down there, who will lay siege to you. If you dig too far, you might breach huge halls in the mountain, and your fort will be besieged by zombies.

Good luck!

What made tantrum spirals a notable thing is that they weren't caused by fortress mismanagement. They were cascading waves of misery and insanity that would be set off by the smallest errors or accidents or even unavoidable events. They were never an intended loss mechanic; they were an emergent property of the personality system being too sensitive to some kinds of input. The new morale system in .40, for all its problems, made dwarves more resilient to that sort of thing.
You can still ruin your fort by destroying your dwarves' psyches and watching your populace crumble into insanity, but you have to actually be bad at the game now.
