Pod mechanics work the same as far a we know. The only difference really is the conceal mechanic.

They did mention that there was a way to activate pods that would prevent them (potentially) from reaching cover, but I think that is also tied to the conceal mechanic.

At the start of most missions your squad is counted as in 'Concealment'. In this phase, your squad is detected at a much shorter range than normal - enemies will display a red 'detection' radius around themselves on the tile grid, and certain other terrain features will reveal you such as passing too close to security scanners, breaking through windows or smashing open doors (you can avoid the last one by opening them silently instead of moving through them while closed). If an enemy patrols into you while you're concealed and your soldier ends up in the red detection radius during their turn, any move that soldier makes will reveal him and 'Concealment' ends for the entire squad.

Concealment speeds up the early part of missions considerably by allowing you to dash forward and move swiftly without fear of getting yourself annihilated by a two or three pod activation - or even just a one pod activation that leaves you in bad cover or flanked from an unexpected direction. It also allows you to set up good ambushes and opening moves on enemies you've discovered. In some cases it may allow you to entirely bypass enemies if your objective doesn't involve wiping the map.

In Concealment, I'm also fairly sure your Overwatch shots have greater +hit/+crit but I could be wrong.

I don't have a lot of optimism for this concealment system even approaching being fun or useful, much like flanking is currently (a neat thing in concept, but taking advantage of it is usually pointless since it just leads to more activations or is faster and easier to just use grenades/rockets)

Yes, ADVENT are the rank and file mooks of XCOM 2. Sectoids for example are much tougher and more dangerous now with powers like Mind Control, and they show up more rarely.

Hasn't been discussed so far more than them saying that everything's useful so you're never going to be fucked over so much as you'll use the items you get in a different way. For example it's the difference between randomly getting a rocket launcher to start or a flamethrower instead. Then later you can do more research to get the other choice you didn't get first.

Not sure what you mean. There's pathfinding in place to avoid shit like accidentally walking into detection range if you don't need to, and if you want to you can force it with the waypoint system which allows you to state exactly where your troop will move during their action instead of letting the game handle pathfinding. The Concealment system is a very strong improvement - faster and more fun approaches to missions without getting fucked over by early bullshit activations you couldn't see coming. It lets you start the mission on your terms.

Also, no new info or hints about that medbay section? I remember in base introduction video Bradford mentioned something about being able to do extensive modifications for soldier. My first thought was that it will be toned-down variant of genmods and mecs, like ability to give mechanical legs or arm or maybe an eye for soldier, but not full-on MEC trooper conversion. And andromedos gave me hope for a power armor that will essentially be xcom 2 MEC's.

It's just looks like that melee doesn't have a lot of variety in the game, just one run-and-slash skill of ranger with various flavors like move after slash. Multiple tiers is not something unrealistic, especially since it looks like machete is weapon just like grenade launcher of grenadier.
My doubts concern mainly over-the-top weapons that been posted here on various occasions, like warhammer-esque chainswords, sw-esque laser weapons and such. I don't think we gonna go very far from simple blades, since the whole point is xcom being short on resources.

As for the snakewomen, they don't look alien. They're just an enlarged earth creature with arms. Thin men were an improvement on the snakemen that fit well into the reptilian niche. There are two parts of xcom, long term strategy and and short term tactics. The air game, at least in long war, involves few tactics (other than use of consumables), but is an essential part of strategy if you don't want to fight from behind for the duration of your campaign. You are forced to forgo other purchases to invest in fighters and defend your air space and slow the enemy tech. You have to choose when to use you fighters because UFOs are more common and more deadly, and downtime on your fighters is significant. There's a lot of thought and planning that goes into the air game even if the engagements consist of clicking the mouse button a few times.

Think of deploying an interceptor like firing a shot at an enemy in the ground game. Sometimes your sniper will miss that 90% shot. You're at the mercy of RNG there too. blow consumables on thin men asap unless you have flanks or good shots on them instead. seriously if you can get a rocket/grenade on two thin men in early game you take it. fuck if you can get ONE thin man with a rocket and you're in like the first month and have no other options, don't even feel bad. the only possible downside to that would be if there are MORE thin men later and you don't have rockets for them too.

thin men are absoloute bullshit and the best way to deal with them in vanilla is to delete them from the game before they can ever shoot you. otherwise break los or hunker if you can't and pray you can find a flank on them.

Early game thin mints are really kill or be killed. If you give them a turn, its about a coin flip someone will die or get crit wounded. You kill the fisrt turn. If you can't "break los" (for real, this is not meme advice). If you can't do the first two, then everyone needs to be hunkered in full cover to encourage them to acid someone.

Don't be afraid to use two nades or one rocket for a single mint.

Im doing the alien base assault and I run into a complete bullshit pod of two ethereals and four muton elites. After all but one ethereal were killed, it decides to mind control one of my dudes. Ok, no big deal, I can kill it this turn. So I fucking kill it and my guy is still MC'd. After 5 turns of running away, breaking line of sight and hunkering, I still haven't gotten control of him back. The fuck is going on? Is this just how ethereal mind control works or is it a magnificent bug?

Yeah, I mean, I can't argue these are optimal perk choices, but they work.

I think of this scout more like a mobile infantry with some extra utility. Tac sense means he can run overwatch better and he doesn't need to be lugging heavy armor or protective gear since he shouldn't be targeted. In this case I don't care about sprinter, because I am treating him like mobile infantry, which means that I will be relying on cover destruction to proc hit n' run instead of flanking. And of course for no cover targets it doesn't matter (mecs, melee).

Ranger gives that extra damage and means I can equip him with a shotgun on urban close quarters map (or just in general) and he still has an effective sidearm for ranged engagements.

I don't need low profile because of tac sense and tac sense is preferable because it still helps him run overwatch where low profile won't.

He could often bring the damage of a critfantry, but with some extra flexibility like running overwatch and being and to move and take two shots in a single turn.

I had more traditional concealment scouts, but this guy brought damage to the fight that other scouts didn't while bringing the lightening reflexes.

Normal loadout was scope + chameleon vest pre three slots.

Is there any way to restrain floaters? Just deployed my A-team for a landed medium, activated two floater pods and only avoided losing a veteran thanks to RNG.

Rocket on sight works, especially at six or more active.

My solution is to get psi running asap, since floaters have terrible will. Two mindfrays and a suppression after an activation helps immensely.

Also, 3+ overwatches tend to scare them from moving, if you're in good cover already.

The reason cover is shit in vanilla is that relying on RNG is a bad idea. If high cover still leaves the ayy with 25% chance to hit you, that means you'll lose a soldier every four ayy shots; even if only one or two ayys out of ten get to shoot at you, that's a high mortality rate when you want your soldiers to survive multiple missions and get dank OP perks.

LW cover doesn't just help on the RNG front, it also directly reduces damage. You no longer automatically lose a soldier when he gets hit. Hell, early game you can stack enough health so that all your soldiers can survive sectoid crits fairly easily.

When sectoids hit for 3-5 and crit for 50% more, going from 3hp rookies to 5-8hp rookies and 1 damage reduction on each shot makes for quite a difference in cover effectiveness.

Long time lurker, I've posted in here maybe 10-20 times in the last year. Liked the original X-COM games as a kid, liked XCOM:EU, and liked ShackTactical videos with Beagle. Somehow I found this magical place, probably by a combination and every now and then I come visit. You all have been particularly helpful with both introducing me to and getting LW to run on my pc, which of course I've never beaten. I'm not actually good at XCOM but I do love playing it and I love coming to /xcg/, so in honor of keeping this place alive until XCOM2 I wanted you all to know I've started a new game of Classic Non-Ironman EW nonLW, with training roulette on for the first time. I'm going to try not to savescum but I'm actually awful at this game so who cares, I'll have fun.

Low cover+Elevation is actually feasible.

in LW, ayylmaos don't get the crit% cheat they have in vanilla.
This is a major concern for anyone who plays the game.
"BS Crits" are the most disgusting thing that can happen to you, and LW balances that out.

Engineers Gunners Medics and Rocketeers are good officer candidates. Infantry is passable.
I also recommend having the crazy high will soldiers be psi. The officer will bonus meant to be like a shitty version of steadfast.
The panic rolls are important to pass.
Usually 70-80 will will pass most of them.
Higher will the better. One failed panic roll can have dire consequences.
Psionic armors and Mind Shield are also invaluable for psi-users.

Why do everyone say that medic and engi are good officers?

They are item dependent/situational, you want to keep in the back unless needed, so them having psi stuff like midmerge or inspiration that they can use outside of LOS, or when out of conumables gives them more utility. Making them officers strips them of this for the off-chance that you might need to command someone every 5th turn at best. And not to mention, medics have the best will growth of all, going to waste.

On the other hand with ifantry, you always want to shoot or reload, so giving them active psi powers is a waste anyway, and even if you have to command someone (and in most cases you can, because infantry almost always get best-position-priority), you can still shoot/reload beforehand, so you still get a regular soldiers turn out of it.
And again, because command has such a high cooldown, is limited use, and usualy an ace-in-the-hole, you dont miss out on nearly as much actions, as locking out an almost psi relant class out of psi.

its a shame thin mints have so little HP and don't have any upgraded versions or anything, they're a really cool concept that brings in reptilian conspiracy theory mythos in nicely to complement general ayy lmaoing about, and they are genuinely threatening well into the mid-game because LPR crits aren't anything to sneeze at even in skeleton suits

getting owned by thin mint drop-in is laughable though. even on my first time through I considered it a bit of a break. it's spooky when you see more of them drop than you have guys, but it just means free high crit rate shots from your troops and knowing where the thin mints have gone once they scramble for cover instead of blundering into activations

it's kinda a bullshit thing you can't see coming the first time it happens, but once you know that's coming you can deal with it so easily

Hunker, break LOS. Whenever you encounter enemies, you need to give ground and force them to move into inferior positions to fight you. I assume you're not playing Long War which makes this considerably easier for you. Run frag grenades, use your consumables to remove enemy cover if you absolutely must hold LOS like a fucking idiot and win in a straight up fight. In vanilla, the stats will be more skewed in the aliens favor, but the game is much simpler and exploitable. None of that will work 100% of the time, and relying on cover destruction places a hard endurance limit on your fighting.

Breaking LOS isn't the same thing as hoping with overwatch. Take pic related for example. The bus along the right side is a wall of full cover. If there's an active pod on the other side of the bus, you can keep you dudes all inside (not on the corners, to avoid peeking) to break LOS, and let them come at you. When the aliens don't have vision on any of your guys, they don't know what is and is not cover - it doesn't have any sort of "memory". No, it should go without saying that this isn't something you can do all the time, but only when the environment supports it - however, when the opportunity presents itself, it's a powerful tool.

Taking shots via overwatch. Breaking LOS properly does not having you even using overwatch. Did you even read what I wrote? What it sounds like you're doing is retreating backwards, letting the fog of war hide the enemies, and preparing with overwatch. Breaking LOS means sticking your entire team behind large segments of high cover, then popping out to look for opportunities. It's not based on distance, it's based on using the environment. If you're doing it right, it's literally impossible to be shot at unless the aliens are already at very close range, since they have to maneuver around whatever large piece of cover you're using. In the example map I posted, you pop out to look for shots as far back as the far side of the fountain, but aliens need to come around to the side of the bus to fire back.

15 is definitely different, but is pretty cool. The command system is awesome, MECS don't tank as hard, not quite as broken but are still awesome.

They added a repair mechanic, but it sucks and you can turn it off with a second wave option. Speaking of second wave, I think there are some new ones added besides repair ones.

I think they standardized ammo from 14 to 15 so the Laser Shotgun actually has 4 shots instead of the measly 3. I know there are alot more changes. There are some changes in perk trees for classes, they added the motion scanner which is a pretty amazing item.

I'm sure there is alot more, but I can't remember it off the top of my head. Overall I think most people recommend it and personally I enjoy it.

I love it. some people seem to bitch endlessly about its netcode and it definitely results in a more pronounced peekers advantage than say, Counter-Strike - a good few points of a second more at least - but I just peek as attacker or sit in places where they won't immediately see me on entry as a defender and I've stopped noticing deaths due to 'lag' almost entirely.

Netcode aside it's one of the most fun shooters I've played in ever and one of the best games I've played this year. I'm really addicted to it. I'd be on it right now if I wasn't busy making stuff.

does anyone here build their scouts with holo-targeting? i can't take a bullet wizard on every mission, and sapper/smoke grenade are much better picks for lcpl engineers.

i'm just looking for advice about choices at LCPL. Scout builds were often a point of contention, to the point where the whole tree got a rework in 15c

what perk choices do you take? it feels like a support grenade-heavy playstyle used to be the dominant one until shadow devices got nerfed into the ground.
