Go to the smashladder ranks and check who are the top ranked players for their respective player, message them, and try and play friendlies with them. Make sure to save replays, take notes, and ask for advice.
Look at competitive players for a specific player, watch what they do and what works and what doesn't work.
Really your character skill will only get you so far, your fundamentals is what will really make you a good player. Make sure to always mix up your approaches, bait out your opponent to commit to bad options, and punish with your strongest moves.

Shielding and jumping over the projectiles should work well against projectile spammers, just try to keep from getting upset, it requires some patience. If you get upset you'll mess up and get hit even if you're trying to do the right thing.
Alternatively try to avoid playing FG and take them to stages with platforms so spamming is less of a viable strategy.

Mario seems too low risk, high reward for the type of character that he is and how easy of a time he has to confirm. Nobody should be able to essentially get 30-40% off of one Dthrow, have the potential to kill that early and on top of it, have a kit that makes all of this viable as long as you can catch someone.
People like to complain about Sheik, but at least she requires you to work for a kill after doing combos, Mario is literally able to throw out smash attacks that are better than most characters own and retreat faster then most characters can retort. It's beatable, but it's just a hassle. A hassle I don't really want to put up with to be entirely honest.

Mario has good combo potential but actually struggles to kill unless he nabs a backthrow with his back to the ledge or people react poorly to his Dair. Well yeah I know you know, but staying actively conscious about it is how you break the habit which is why its important to bring up the obvious.
The little things like that add up quickly, and when I say add up I mean they get you killed, even if youre trying to avoid other stuff like gordos and whatnot. Its sort of like practicing teching Ganon's flame choke over and over. As small a part that is of fighting Ganondorf, not taking that gaurenteed dtilt will not only afford you less damage, but also save your life in many situations. Doesnt matter how well you dodge his upairs if you get flame choked and die at 100% to a dtilt. Rolling backwards might seem insignificant but its really a big part of winning more consistently.

Also not really aimed at specifically you, but everyone in general, but speaking of this subject, since I see it happen a lot.
If youre just starting the match and are at 0%, you should be playing almost no differently then and when you are at 120% trying not to die. You go for things you know will work, and you avoid the things that will get you hurt, same at any stage of the game.
So if youre going to be careful, you have to be careful constantly and not switch mid battle. I think it really just amounts to people underestimating how quickly your opponent can retaliate. A lot of times I see people just throwing out attacks for no other reason or purpose other than they can. And thats not good because when the enemy decides to dash up to them and powershield or something, they stop knowing what to do and either reflexively roll somewhere, or spot dodge or something. Everything you do should have a good reason, whether it be trying to intercept your opponent's shot hops or shielding an anticipated upsmash.
I dont know how to accurately describe what Im saying but yeah.
