Worked a little bit with this today.

Terrain just there so it can stand somewhere. Final will probably be up on a mountain or so.

First thing next week: Switch to Unreal Engine 4.
Really excited for that. Best of all is that I don't have to use Unity's terrain editor anymore. Not badmouthing that engine, but that editor really is a piece of trash and should've been redone with U5.
>>
>>123878170
'discipline' is a euphemism for "just fucking do it right now"
it's not some magic, intangible thing you acquire after a period of time

literally just start doing things. Put 4chan in another workspace, on the backburner

Well it did work for Dark Messiah of Might & Magic and Hexen.

Certainly not going for an absolute carbon copy of KF. Especially with the combat system.

I basically want it to be easy to control but have a bit of weight (i.e. not as floaty as any of the titels I named - but bascally going down a more FPS like road with the control scheme).

The more adaptive, the more wasteful. It's not worth it if you can just provide a settings menu so that the user can pick their favourite costly effects. For example, I hate motion blur, so I can get an FPS increase and more pleasing visuals without sacrificing anything else.

>>123887786
Though not for this reason. You could keep everything in memory, but still, swapping textures in and out of samplers (on non-bindless hardware) is a significant cost.

Well it's hard to not be bland with "fake real" fantasy/medieval yurope, I'd say the issue here is that everything looks too "new" maybe add some details and less perfect outfits.

Good points:
- not failing for too generic tropes
- no retarded boobs armor
- face is not too impersonal while still qt
- colors are bretty good

Bad points:
- too clean
- the sword design is pretty boring, same for the pouch
- design is not very uniform (the scarf is a culprit here imo)

the characters are 3D models with skeletal animation, with very little width on the z axis so they look flat (scaled on the z axis in unity, wider gaps in the modeling software for easier editing)
the items are billboards/sprites (just a quad mesh with the UVs set to a small portion of a texture sheet)

Sort of. Python is usually cited as a decent language to learn how to program (dynamically typed and imperative without being as poorly-designed as JS), but PyGame is incredibly out of date and the language is slow. So don't expect to be able to stick with it.

because skeletal animation on a 2D(ish) model is easy to do. As far as I know, you can't get smooth animations like this with just sprites unless you're using something like Spine, but that's not much different from what I'm doing

Exactly. Only people who have had weak emotional development in their lives would like Undertale. And at 20 it's very easy to not be significantly emotionally developed. For instance, people who tend to insult other's tastes based on their maturity ("ADHD children") are most likely to be immature themselves, because who doesn't understand that people have different tastes? If I had one advice to give you is to meet people who are a lot different from you in how they think and act. That's the only way you'll grow up, kiddo.

How should I store tile-types in a tile-based C++ game?
Each tile-type should have at least two bools and a char associated with it. Should I make the "database" an actual file, or hardcode the values?

you should make a game with a faction whose only goal is to destroy all media because because why should people of the future get to our stuff when we won't be able to enjoy their stuff? but then as the plot unfolds you learn that actually, in reality, the leader of the faction is a time traveler who is trying to prevent the next hitler without straight up killing the next hitler because the the time traveler knows that the next hitlers main motivation is music of the past. but then a new time traveler shows up claiming that the next hitler is necessary because he'll eventually motivate humanity to become a space-faring species. but how did that time traveler know that you were planning to stop the next hitler? will you destroy all media to stop the next hitler without causing any deaths? what if the original time traveler is lying to you and the actual cause for the next hitler is the boring world you create by destroying all media?

Up to you, although it's unlikely that you'll be changing them much, unless they're associated with a graphical tileset.
>If I decide to harcode the values, how would I do that?
Use an array, or even better, a constexpr function from ID to tile type data.

JSON is probably overkill for something simple like what you want. A file with this format is probably enough.

Right, so basically what i need to do, is store arrays instead of glm::mat4.
Like in a camera class for the view matrix.

>>123900437
No the user could still use glm, they would just need to use glm::value_ptr on a non-temp object or something.
No need to reimplement it. The problem is, if the user wanted to pass a temp object, it wouldn't work.
Something like camera.setMatrix(glm::mat4(1)); would result in a compile error.

From that I can make a 3D model and 3d print a bust of the person's head by itself or ON pretty much anything (beerstein, cups, necklace, you name it).

I'd probably charge like 15$ to make the model (takes me like 20 minutes) and then X$ per item you order. You'd basically need somewhere between 40-60$ for an item the first time and then substract the head model fee. I'd bring the items the next week same place same hour. Also the items would be one color only.

I've started to load textures I've downloaded from OpenGameArt, just to look at something different.

>>123926270
Well, I'm no OpenGL expert either, but:

In order to render shadow maps, I draw objects from the light's point of view (6 times, for each side of a cube map). When I render in this step, I only write the depth values of objects. When I draw the map, I compare the depth value of the what's being drawn with what's stored in the shadow map. If it's behind something, I shade it a little darker.

However, writing just depth values to the frame buffer is no longer sufficient for what I want. I want to pass in an additional float that I can use to modify the darkness of a shadow. I intend to use this to slowly fade out shadows once a light no longer hits an object.

I'm just not sure how to do that.

This is not as easy as it sounds, because it's the same problem as that of order-independent transparency. In order to get correct results, you will need something like per-fragment linked lists or some other way to have multiple depth values for each fragment.

>>
>>123928152
I think you mean how "farther away the occluder is from the light"? That's easy to do (just modulate the shadow strength depending on the distance stored in the shadow map), but not what I want.

What I'm trying is a pretty dumb hack - I literally want to weaken a shadow's strength over time once a occluder is itself occluded by something else. Not realistic behavior, but maybe something I can accomplish.

Because not all occluders are rendered to the shadow map. The block shown in pic related is part of the BSP geometry, and has it's own lightmap shadow (which doesn't show well here...). Also, you can hardly compare the engine/game relationship to the pencil/drawing relationship. One is vastly more complex and bidirectional.

It was a consulting company in another state that was opening up a new development center in town, and they were hiring practically everyone they could to fill seats. I had no experience or degree but I knew how to program so they hired me. Very meritocracy. So you can get hired if the company is desperate enough. They want to get a gauge on how long you intend to be with the company. They know you just want a paycheck. Everyone knows that. But they need work to be done and if you're going to fuck off to greener pastures in 6 months they're not going to bother with the effort of hiring and training you.

Programming positions have a notoriously high turnover rate relative to their pay grade, so companies have become wary of hiring someone without being absolutely sure they're going to stick around.

Even if he has a point, it's overshadowed by his insane entitlement. Google can hire literally anybody they want. They get to make "ridiculous" programming exercises for interviewees because they have no shortage of candidates who will jump through hoops to try them. He does not have the qualifications that they were looking for, but instead of being humbled by the experience and seeing that he has more to learn, he goes on twitter to rant about how Google should have hired him sight unseen based on a previous project he worked on.

I like this question cause I think I made a good business-like decision here

The games art looks bad yeah? So I figured no body is gonna want to risk ANY money paying for a game that looks like that. So my logic was, people would download the game to have a giggle at what they would think would be a garbage game, but end up having a lot of fun with it. and it's actually worked out pretty well in my favor. i get messages telling me that was their original intention, and end up playing for a few hours. That, plus I think my netcoding in it is really bad, since I'm a beginner at coding multiplayer games.

The DLC earns me $200-$400 a month, which is way more then I expected. I made a hard stance on no pay to win too, so the DLC strictly only gives you aesthetic stuff (hats, effects, etc)

I just really focused on respecting the player, and I did that by thinking as one.

My next project might be paid tho. I think I can probably reel in an artist now that I have something to show off and look pretty serious.

Not him, but the fact that these people couldn't do the problem in the first place is just the cherry on top. That's like CS 101 tier, maybe second semester. Should be trivial even if you were never formally trained and are as good a programmer as you think you are.

I was never active in either the Showcase or GMG aside from playing the games, I only really got to the point where I wanted to show my stuff off by the time YoYo was around in like '07 or '08. How would you implement performance-friendly physics in a Worms-like game? What I mean is if you carved out a section of the map that wasn't attached to the ground, every pixel should fall apart and down towards the ground with collision (until after a predetermined time it would probably be removed).

I figure if I used a regular physics engine for this only supercomputers would be able to run it, considering how many pixels you could get moving at once.

set up simple adding/number check logic objects and now I'll be able to do the thing where you get a different sequence of dialogue for repeatedly talking to someone

equating GML to blueprints is kinda dumb. do you think I'm using the drag and drop stuff or something

Not him but considering the guy at 35 is the focus of the image, the "Oh by the way you're too late" focus on zucker is pretty demotivating.

Sounds like "Too late to start?" "Yes."

The point of comparison is that they are both forms of programming bound to proprietary systems.

Instead of scaling it in the inspector did you try changing the import scale? Even then it sounds weird that they'd suddenly stop working when an object is scaled.
>>
>>123941664
you are also missing the point
if you don't understand it i'm not gonna explain it to you
you're either feigning ignorance purely for the sake of continuing an argument about nothing with strangers on the internet or you are genuinely too unintelligent for even simple nuance
no bully intended, have a nice evening

Was going to go to sleep, but figured I'd upload instead:
mega.nz/#!gFB0EaZT!tVD1R0r80TWxexUl93EwH61t1UUvMc4JoeslnZbHeAA

Uses C# and OpenTK. Is barely tested on Windows, not optimized in the least and will probably break.

Enjoy.

>think about changing something in my game
>weigh over it for a while, considering the impact it'd have on all my game's systems
>decide not to change it after all
>suddenly, out of dev time

Is this progress?

Made another AGDG Demo Day 5 video, since it happens to actually run more or less decently enough now, and it was bugging me that I didn't do all the ones I could. I did a really shitty job though!

>have a really grandiose idea for a game
>start thinking about how theres no way I'm going to do this
>actually think of a way to simplify it to it's basics
>have an idea that can actually be completed in less than a month
>feel confident I won't drop it and I can keep making games like this

Game dev is fun
