I just started playing, did some ranked 2v2 with a friend who also just started playing.
First five games I two base roach hydra'd some really badly executed cheese. last two games we got obliterated by players who actually built workers.
I placed silver league. I need to get comfortable with the larva injection. And I haven't used much other than roach hydra because they worked really good against everything I against, and the two games I lost I had no idea what was going on.

you can use a macro hatch (make a hatchery next to your main or natural) and inject on that one so you compensate from the rare times that you miss injects or when you are floating too many minerals
and while doing 2 base all ins is a good idea if you are just starting, it's only worth doing it if you are keeping your resources low, your drone count is good and you aren't missing injects, so when you move onto playing longer games you don't get stomped because you can only play the first 8 minutes

and for trying out other units, speedlings can be used pretty effectively to backstab, specially in lower leagues when usually the reaction is f2 and going back to base, banelings and lurkers are good against clumped up units and mutas are really good harrass units

Do you know why WC3 lasted so long, and broodwar as well? Because they had a really fun custom games menu. It's beyond me how you people don't understand that barely anyone gives a shit about competitive SC2, the vast majority of people want to play shitty minigames like tower defense and don't touch the naked korean girl

And yes, SC2 is not approachable. Platinum and below are basically cheesers who make playing this game a fucking drag, it's only in Masters really where you see no cheese. I fucking hated the first year of playing this game, where I climbed ladder ranks by having to learn how to beat cheese. Every time someone tried to cheese me, I beat them. The issue is that it's not fun, he tried to go for an easy win and now I've wasted 10 minutes of my time as his probe runs around spawning pylons.

SC2 is fun when you are choosing your build and playing against another build, trying to outsmart the other player. It rarely happens because Blizzard fucking sucks at game design and hasn't removed cheesy bullshit from their game, so obviously very little people have the patience to get to diamond and masters.
