1. Make sure you don't have an Oath rune equipped, your network is set to Worldwide, & your chalice is set to Open
2. Set a password with at least one number & one letter (the more the better)
3. Provide glyph if necessary
4. Due to 1.05, there is no longer a way to Dungeon skip via SRRC

Anybody have a glyph for an easy depth 5 dungeon to farm for rocks?

Do any of the additional rites increase the drop rate on them?

Thanks.

I'm shooting for a level 120 MLGS build. END is really where I'm uncertain. I've got 15 END right now and as long as I have an Anti-Clockwise Metamorphosis rune I'm fine, but I'd never say no to more Stamina if I can afford it.

2 radials and a triangle, so the standard one

So I am in the fishing hamlet, and I'm like hey lets look at those fish inside those barrels.

There is no fish, only slug like creatures not unlike the one you transform into after moon presence.

If you use the transformation attack and hit your enemy with it you can take that chunk of health back thanks to rally. Its really fucking cool. Love Bloodletter but farming off shape BLT gems is worse than farming elemental and arcane gems.

Going fantastic, I adore this thing so much. Got discouraged when I went to Mensis and didn't do a whole lot of damage to the midgets in armor, but then I dropped into Lower Loran and was doing great damage. Guess those guys have good Arc resistance. Invading is a total blast, my favorite is research hall.

DaS3 has Miyazaki back. It's no guarantee it'll be better than 2, but I'm optimistic. It even has MP again, Demon's Souls-style.

I can sympathize with being tired of the medieval setting, though.

>>
>>123816543
Just watched some footage of DkS3, the one IGN posted. And to be honest it really gives off a Boletarian vibe on some of the levels, the one that looks like Bloodborne.

I was hoping for one where the dungeon itself was pretty quick, and then no potentially challenging bosses like Amygdala or Abhorrent Beast.
>>
>>123817248
I think storywise that Bloodborne is the best and that's really the draw of Miyazaki for me. It was a tad too linear in its progression and certain parts of the game feel uneven as fuck, especially the beast bosses and the Nightmare of Mensis, but overall the PvE was really good in this game.

I doubt we'll have a hub world in Dark Souls 3. Bloodborne had elements that were very much successors to Demon's Souls and the idea of a hub world/nexus is one of them. If anything we'll just have another Firelink Shrine type place.

It's definitely not. The whole idea of humans actually wanting to ascend to Great Onehood is utterly incompatible with Lovecraft, whose works never included anything remotely hubristic. And Lovecraft, despite being a successor of Poe in his early career, didn't really have much of a Gothic aesthetic going on.

How much of Lovecraft have you read?

flat arcane ignores attack multipliers

kos parasite has the biggest multiplier in the game, which is why it hits for way more damage than its 300 AR would indicate

if you use flats your AR goes up and your damage goes down

Our 150 'builds' would be 99 in an attack stat and like 70 or something in vit and we would STILL have best gems. Sure you're up for that?
>>

Bloodborne was heavily inspired by Lovecraft's works. That's undeniable.

Oh yeah sure superficially the ayylmaos are pure Lovecraft. But the relationship between humankind and the Great Ones in-game is completely at odds with Lovecraft's idea of helpless humanity, trapped here on our watery rock as things beyond our control tear out of the stars left and right. It definitely has elements of Lovecraftian horror, though. I'm not contesting that.

The area has one 19% gem you can pick up from the ground. You have to farm the other two from the brains. Slap 3 of those and you can do PVP without farming chalices.
>>
>>123819261

I know I can. I don't want to. I already have my weapon at +10 and my build done. I don't want to have to farm. that's simple as that.
>>
>>123819964
It's not the ability itself, it's the fact that it can be seamlessly chained from an R1 really fast. So you're already stunned from the R1 and going into the L1 is so fast it happens before the other player can recover, and it's continues with a stun while doing insane damage.

By the time you get out you're either dead or have ~1/4 of your health left because the damage is so retarded.

You can parry both of his phases pretty easily if you're a fucking faggot.

But otherwise you can usually pull off a viseral on his back when he does the jump attack over you in his first phase. Also generally try to stay on his left side and be patient. Try to get in 1-2 attacks when a theres an opening and then get the fuck out in a hurry.
>>
>>123820460
Yes, basically.
I'm dissatisfied with the gem system because any illusion of choice is overshadowed by 'DIS IS BEST' and there's no cool using fast poison gems or anything for fun. I used to beat people in souls with a poison enchanted blacksmith hammer because it was just fun.

What he >>123820895 said
>>
>>123820841
There are tons of different mobs in areas that spawn only in higher NG cycles (can't be asceticed). For example, brume tower gets more npcs and some red phantoms at NG+2 and then keeps getting more up until NG+7.

I mean yeah it's piss easy, but at least they tried and it is refreshing. It's definitely better than just health+damage because just health+damage gets boring as shit. As long as the new challenges/enemies don't drop exclusive items then there is literally nothing wrong with it, in fact i'd say it should be in ds3, and should've been in bloodborne.

/bbg/ can get a little vitriolic but I think it's based mostly on the presentation of ideas. Like someone comes in here and starts screaming their ideas are right, of course /bbg/ is gonna lose its shit. I expected to get thrown out of here by the pitchfork wielding masses when I suggested the Old Hunter's Bone was Gehrman's but it was received better than expected and I think it's largely because I didn't come in here screaming about how I'm right and they're wrong, like certain posters of ill-repute do fairly consistently.

>>
>>123820882

Really? Gascoigne says two sentences to you. He is a non-character. Djura says, what 4? If you find the eldritch retardation that makes him neutral, that is. Arianna pops out a kid and dies. Gilbert coughs and is a bargain-basement crestfallen; notable only because he has a flamethrower. Micolash is just retarded, he is a meme and little else. And Gehrman only shows up at the start and at the end to try and kill you, he does nothing that makes him notable before he is a boss. And Iosefka dies after 2 bosses if you even meet her. The fake is just a nut.

None of these characters develop, they at best do their own thing and you get to maybe see them a couple times. You don't save them from direct peril and have little agency in their fates outside whether you pointlessly kill them.

I based it mostly on the fact that we can't trust the item descriptions 100% because the text for the Rifle Spear says it's the only trick weapon with a gun attached, though it does hint at an old Cainhurst design. It just confirms that the descriptions are written from a flawed in-game perspective as opposed to an omniscient exterior narrator. Oh and the Doll prays at that grave, which would make sense if it was Gehrman's in the Abandoned Workshop.

We concluded that there's really not enough information to base a credible claim on though and the DLC has only muddied the matter further with it being the Nightmare gravestone.

Discarded.

Gascoigne had a great story. Someone didn't interact with his daughters. Someone didn't piece together what happened in that graveyard, the tragedy with his wife. Someone didn't watch his best friend finally snap under the weight of Gascoigne's death and become a blood addled hunter.

That's what souls games are. Finding the story is on YOU. This isn't some fucking jrpg where the character announces their every thought to you and every villain expounds on their plans while cackling. You discover the NPC story.

well, enb shilled hard for ds2 before it came out, until everyone found out about the actual game and he had to litteraly do an 180 on the game. He alos have a bad habit of starting things and not finishing them, like his thought on the lore.

Spy hate things that are different, and things that are not DeS in general. Also "i dont want your money but give it to me i need it for a living".

Both of them also like to rant about "bad game design" while both their ideas are litteraly fucktarded.

The main problem is that since they worked in the guide they think they are "in" for some reasons and thus like to shill about muh miyazaki and Fromsoft

Just finished my first playthrough and I have to ask, is that all? It reminded me a lot of dark souls 1 in that it shat the bed in the latter half and just stopped being fun. I imagine I would've been pretty upset if I had bought it on release, long before the DLC dropped. The DLC bosses were by far the best in the game and they were mostly excellent, but the base game was somewhat lacking in them. Even Ebrietas, who I've heard nothing but the highest praise for, was just another "dodge forward and hit R1 a couple of times over and over" bosses.

Most of the bosses outside of the DLC felt like they went down too fast. Also thank god I had the DLC. I was bored of the Kirk Hammer being literally the only strength weapon around by the time I reached Amelia and I probably would have lost interest in it entirely if the DLC hadn't dumped like 4 of them on my lap.

How are skill weapons? Is it worth doing another playthrough for a pure skill build or will I find it pretty much the same as my first playthrough?

Are you really calling "Man becomes monster and kills wife; child sad." a good story? It's at best somewhat sad backstory. And, again, the conversation was about good NPCs, a good with a backstory is not good character interaction if you don't interact with it. By that logic Destiny has the greatest story ever told from it's stupid cards.

SKL plays very differently from STR, you got next to no hyperarmor on your moves so enemies can combo you to death easily, you also have minimal stagger so you are forced to go for viscerals whenever you can.
>>
>>123822840
A story is not all about coming straight out to you. You've already explainex your problem. You actually want a jprg approach where everything is spelled out to you and the characters involve you step by step . That's your problem. That's not how these games work.
And it's not at all like Destiny. The story can all be found in game rather than on a third party website.

Here me out, anons:

What if Byrgenwerth's experiments, and the Orphan of Kos in the fishing village were a result of Rom? As in, Byrgenwerth found the Village, and Rom was granted Eyes by being birthed by the body of Kos. Byrgenwerth then responded by experimenting on people, and trying the same process again with the Orphan, in an attempt to figure out how to mass-produce the phenomenon?

Only, the Orphan didn't take too kindly to their experiments, and so pulled the Village into the Nightmare, so they wouldn't be able to hurt those people again.

"higher planes" in the context of BB isn't referring to traveling places, it's referring to ascending to being a Great One. The Sea, as is traditional in Lovecraftian fiction, acts as a layer of insulation that protects the unprepared mind from eldritch bullshit. Byrgenwerth and the early Choir associated the Great Ones with the Ocean is because they were learning to breach this insulation with their insight, and the Blood

I should've specified that I mean all of the NPC interactions and worldbuilding surrounding Gascoigne. With his children, wife and Henryk, and the implied comradery with Eileen. His own lines are neat, but not a whole lot of why I enjoy the character. In terms of interactions, you're absolutely right about characters like Gehrman, Djura or Arianna. It's sparse, but I found the content of each and every piece of dialogue(especially Gehrman and Djura) and interaction was a lot more relevant to the core game's themes. In terms of interaction, yeah Arianna's basically just a whore who has an Ayy baby. But the birth itself and the implications of her possibly being a Cainhurst descendant are very telling of the game and its world. Meanwhile Seigmeyer's bumbling, snoring and failure is entertaining, but I feel it doesn't contribute much to the core ideas of the game. Djura's dialogue, while there's not much of it, encourages heavy speculation on the true nature of beasthood, the hunt and better frames our understanding of the whole beasthood-insight dichotomy. Solaire on the other hand rambles about the Sun(which isn't focused on in any serious way in the core game) and otherwise gates one of the game's core multiplayer mechanics and covenants

As for Iosefka, I should've specified I meant both her and the Fake. Like the other NPCs I mentioned, I feel the questline is very telling of the game's themes.

I'll just say I disagree with most of what else you said, though I certainly agree that the NPC interactions are more sparse than they should be

The sea in the nightmare overlooks Yharnum. The sea is just associated with horrors from beyond thanks to Lovecraft hating fish. Kos seems like a Mother Hydra stand-in and the village is Innsmouth. Given the description on the Accursed Brew, I assume they came to the village and ran it roughshod, killing Kos and looking for a way to ascend; assumingly creating Rom from whatever they brought back.

>The stuff after Rom is the best part of the game
Really?
Yahar'gul was more anoyin than anything. the whole 'hunt the enemy spawner in each new platform while running from hordes of infinitely respawn enemies' thing was just annoying and the fact that all of the enemies were recycled from the early stages of the game made it tedious. The One Reborn was also hands-down the shittiest boss in the game. I couldn't even tell what was going on, I just mashed R1 after killing the casters and it died.

The obstacle course run up to the castle in the nightmare was neat but the castle itself was lacking in interesting combat encounters. In fact, lacking interesting combat encounters was a recurring theme of the 2nd half. Nightmare Frontier was cool, but it was a glorified obstacle course; Upper Cathedral Ward was a neat haunted house but werewolves and brick shithouse tank magic guys don't really make for great combat.

Atmospheric or otherwise non-combat focused area are nice in moderation, but it felt like the second half of the game was nothing but that. Most of the enemies were recycled from other parts of the game or recycled bosses and practically every encounter ended up being solved by walking up and 2-shotting the target, sneaking up behind and gibbing them with a charged R2, or streaming them into a chokepoint and clearing a crowd. The DLC was really, really great for constantly shoving new, different and memorable combat encounters, but the base game wasn't so much. It was pretty stale by the time I reached Mergo's crow thing and that was a joke of a final boss.

Fist of Gratia would be fucking awful to deal with in PvP if it could parry. There's literally no downside besides the range, but it makes up for it in the fact that you at least can reliably hit with it up close (unlike gunshots which whiff past the opponent's shoulder 90% of the time).

I believe she killed herself IRL because of the description on her sword, the dialogue where she talks about leaving a corpse alone, the fact that there is a coffin behind her and the dialogue where she talks about how she intends to 'free us from curiosity'.

It all works to imply that Maria grew disgusted at her work in the lab and her own curiosity that drove the work, threw her sword away and then slit her own throat.

The dialogue about curiosity is probably the biggest hint for me. She saw death as a way to escape a drive for understanding and knowledge. If she truly in the end felt guilty over the treatment of the subjects it stands to reason that she'd kill herself to free both them and her from her curiosity.

Yahar'gul's enemies are nothing but recycled yharnamites until the very bottom, where you finally get a handful of those weird corpse things.

Nightmare of Mensis reuses the white werewolves, frenzy brain dudes and big boulder guys from Frontier, has 1 small room with spiders, a room full of passive doll dudes and a half dozen hostile doll dudes alongside the fat ones, those puppet things that only show up in Micolash's bossfight, if you want to count them, then recycles crows, dogs, pigs and shadows of yharnam. That's the whole fucking zone. More than half of the enemies are recycled and the original ones only show up in 1 room each.

Upper Cathedral Ward? the cthulhu guys showed up earlier in the game (not that they're interesting enemies anyways), werewolves and the church mooks.

If you count Castle Cainhurst as post-Rom, that had a lot of new and unique enemies and was an excellent area.

Gehrman simply because he can't be staggered in the second phase. Though Maria may be OP if she were the same. I think it's compensated by her hitboxes covering most of the arena for sure, as well as some the long recovery times on the animu transformations if you're keen to dodge them
>>
Why does this general move so fast? We only have 90 unique posters (which is like most generals) but we move so goddamn fast it's hard to keep track of conversations or have multiple at once. Even /fgg/, which is the biggest general, doesn't move as fast as us. Are we just that "cuhrayzee"?
>>
>>123824973
Lady Maria's theme gives Gehrman's theme a run for it's money IMO
>>
>>123824472

Because I dont think she formed the nightmare, the Orphan did. The Orphan dragged the halmet into the dreamlands to escape the hunters and the scholars who were doing horrible things to the people in the village (the great ones are sympathetic in spirit). He also then cursed 'the fiends and their children too', meaning the hunters.

The premise of the DLC is that each zone we visit is a memory of a sin. We start in twisted Yharnam, where we meet the blood drunk hunters who slaughter indiscriminately, then we travel to the Research Hall, which is Maria's sin, and finally we go to the Fishing Halmet, which is the original sin from which the rest originated from.

The research hall was being used to understand the whole eyes thing, the research of which first began with the brutal experimentation on the residents of the fishing hamlet.

The hunters we encounter in nightmare yharnam are victims of the Orphans curse for they are the metaphorical children of the fiends who committed the atrocities in the hamlet.

>>123825161
I'm not saying that she formed the Nightmare, I'm saying that she acted as Gehrman did in the Hunter's Dream -- the Orphan pulled the Village into the Nightmare Frontier to escape the researchers. Then, the original Choir members built some research labs and managed to sneak back in via the Astral Clocktower. Maria got sick of their bullshit and made a pact with the Orphan like Gehrman made a pact with the MP. She used her power to suck in the blood-drunk hunters and any future ones, and pulled the research labs into the Nightmare along with a twisted version of Yharnam (like Gehrman did with the Workshop, but on a much larger scale). She did so to keep the victims of the Research Labs safe from any future church interlopers, by placing an army of crazy hunters in their path. IMO it's meant to be a dark parallel to what Gehrman did.

Based on what you're saying, I'm now thinking that her killing herself is what sealed the pact with the Orphan, and allowed her to create the Hunter's Nightmare -- the Orphan seems vindictive, and so such a merciless request wouldn't be unthinkable.

This is all speculation, of course
>>
>>123825471
The Tonitrus will do you just fine in the short term even if you don't want to invest in STR much. Just keep it buffed whenever you really need damage and you'll be good. You'll want to switch to a weapon you can convert as soon as you get good arcane/fire/bolt gems, though. Tonitrus is much more of a STR weapon than an ARC one.

things in the Nightmare don't have to be a "reflection" of things in reality. Sometimes things can get completely pulled in, like the Lecture Hall.

The way I see it, when a Great One makes a pact, and allows an individual to become a Nightmare Host, the host can do two things. They can either create reflections of stuff in reality, or pull it into the nightmare outright. Analogous to having the choice between copying files between different folders in a computer, or moving them.

The Fishing Village and the Research Labs were completely transferred into the Nightmare, the Nightmare Yharnam was copied. The Fishing Hamlet, at least, couldn't have been in the Nightmare originally, since Byrgenwerth found it, and I don't believe that Byrgenwerth ever learned how to traverse the Nightmare planes like the Church did.

This game scratches an itch so fucking hard. This is the best lovecraft game created and I have a huge boner for that. There's so much lore, and so, do much story, even if it's not spelled out for you. I happen to love the lore. The PvE is far and away the best in the series, and with the addition of new weapons, it feels complete. This is GOTY for me, and I can see myself coming back and playing this game. That's the important part, and that's good enough for me.

If I wanted to do a primarily bloodtinge-based build (looking at 50 blt by the end) what would the rest of my stats look like?
I'm primarily aiming for the bloodletter, but I also want to be able to use some of the other bloodtinge weapons so I can have some variety and keep things interesting. How heavily would I need to invest into str and dex just to wield all of the various bloodtinge weapons? How much dex would I need so that some, like the Chikage, would still do decent damage? Is it possible to fit all of them onto one build without horribly overleveling?

depends, on a lvl 98 get 50 blt and the rest in vit, with lone survivor as the starting class you only need some dex for the weebsword.

if you go to lvl 117 get some more dex or endurance, dex for parrying and endurance for pvp.

yes i know that many dont like endurance, but since everyone has low endurance its litterally the only game where you can tired out someone before sneaking in some damage in pvp

Maria fucked up the Research Labs when she made the Hunter's Nightmare. Since Laurence is a gen1 church (and apparently choir) member, it's not like he could have dropped in after it's formation, there was no-one before him. Therefore, his presence in the Hunter's Nightmare implies that he was around for it's formation, which means Maria fucked him up

"Alive" is a really strong word here, anon.
Why is Gehrman alive in the hunter's dream when he must be centuries old by now?
Why is Maria alive in the Hunter's Nightmare when her tombstone is in the old workshop?
Why is Micolash alive in the Nightmare of Mensis when you literally enter it through his mummified corpse?

I wonder, is anything ever established towards why Good Hunter is special?

Like is he literally just a random foreign guy? Was he even a hunter before Bloodborne's main game even? He only got a proper weapon in the Hunter's Dream and was no different from any random guy before it. And he definitely wasn't the first to enter it either.

There's the Cainhurst summons, but his relationship towards Cainhurst is never really explained.

You've got all these experienced hunters, beasts, and old ones, but then Good Hunter comes along and mows them all down, literally even with the pizza cutter.

2. Find secret passage that takes you back to Iosefka's Clinic
3. Get an item called Cainhurst Summons there
4. Go back to Hemwick Lane near a big signpost
5. Go through the level
6. Join Vilebloods
>>

oh dude you need to kill bsb. they don't appear otherwise. djura will be friendly even if you've been shot at by him, just make sure to approach from behind him.
>>
>>123827959
I guess what I'm wondering is if having the base physical stats to wield things like the weebsword and the reiterpallsomething will gimp their damage. As far as I know, the Chikage drains HP constantly in blood mode, so it's not like it's practical to keep it always on. Will my damage in the untricked mode be completely negligible without a bunch of dex? I don't think it'll be worth making the build if the bloodletter is literally all I can use.

My opinion is that he was physically inside the Research Labs, doing research with the rest of the staff, when the labs got pulled into the Nightmare.

That, or, he had already transformed and his beast form was being used for experiments with Beasts' Embrace (which is why it's in his skull) -- they had chopped off his head before he turned, but this motherfucker can survive getting his legs blown away, so something as trivial as a missing head wouldn't stop him from transforming. When the Labs got sucked into the Nightmare, he was released, and his human skull was reflected back as a beast skull in reality
>>
>>123828735
A hunter is never alone
>>
>>123828231
The fact that you're a foreigner is the special part. You're one of the exceptionally few hunters that doesn't go blood-addled or beastmode at some point throughout the game, because you didn't get your blood until after the mensis ritual was already underway.

Any hunter COULD have finished the hunt, but it had to be an outsider because the church was already in on the ritual and any other domestic hunter was already caught in the web. You just happened to be that outsider

They didn't 'get pulled' anywhere. The research ward and the clocktower are in normal Yharnam. They're visible virtually everywhere in the cathedral ward.

If anything, getting your blood after the Mensis ritual began should make you transform SOONER, not later, since you're getting an initial dose of mega-blood, without the opportunity to wean yourself onto it

Most of the hunters you encounter in the game are church-hunters, or have been hunters for a long time (eg. they already had the blood). You're special because you only became a hunter after the ritual, you didn't have the blood in you when Mensis summoned a bunch of Amygdalas to cover the city, sacrificed the entire population of Yahar'gul and fused their school into a metaphenomenological dimension of horror.
>>
>>123826857
Indication is the Hunters existed in some form even when Byrgenwerth was still up and running. That's how they had to have ransacked the Fishing Village, and that's probably why the Doll says Gehrman sleeps well once you kill the Orphan. He was probably there, or possibly even led the charge on the Hamlet.

I believe the Old Hunters all getting pulled into the Nightmare was the catalyst for Laurence and Gehrman to seek out MP and create the dream. Immortal Hunters means they're not destined to end up in the Nightmare like others. It was kind of a last ditch solution and neither of them were aware the MP was just going to manipulate its Hunters seemingly into killing other Great Ones and otherwise perpetuating the hunt.

Look up virtually anywhere in Cathedral Ward and look for a clocktower. There's a structure that connects the two where the living failures fight takes place.

I'm saying that the reason why there aren't two Grand Cathedrals currently in Yharnam is because the 2nd one (which housed the research labs) got sucked into the Nightmare, to protect the victims therein from the Church

In after getting the blood, the beast that emerges from the floor burns to death. If we assume that the beast wasn't physically there, but more of a presence or analogy to becoming beastlike or infected, the PC is special because he cannot become an actual beast.

I kinda assume that, however, like in the soul games you aren't special. In the souls games, are are literally "chosen" undead number 6789, told that you are special and must end the curse. There are a lot of indications that you aren't the first "chosen undead". You are just a smuck who was lied to in the very slim hope of you being able to succeed. Whiel you aren't being led on like in Dark souls, I think its the same idea.

I don't know why people insist it was the MP that gave Gehrman and the hunters powers. It was the blood itself that did from the chalices. Gehrman also was the first and the best at what he did. The MP probably came sometime after old Yharnam and Gehrman most likely beckoned him to see Maria again or if he was dying hence his peg leg.

>>
>>123829528
I'm aware. However, one of the descriptions says that all of the Old Hunters were whisked away overnight(which is likely what prompted Ludwig to start recruiting civilians, although he inevitably ended up in the Nightmare himself), so it's likely that they were all Blood-Drunk at the time.

>>123829686
Yes, but I thought it was fairly clear that hunters under the MP's employment are essentially immunizes to the Scourge. This would explain the Beast hallucination at the start, and why it burns away prior to the messengers' appearance, which we can say with some certainty are agents of some sort of MP.

As for the anti-Great One theory, this is just based on our killing the Wet Nurse/Mergo, but ultimately I don't try to speculate on its motivations. There's hardly anything to go on, but I'm confident it's not fully benevolent as it seems synonymous with the Red Moon which is driving everyone mad and possibly exacerbating everyone's beasthood

>hunters under the MP's employment are immune to the scourge
the eye of the blood-drunk hunter specifically states that the Old Hunters (who are now in the Nightmare) once had a connection to the Dream, which is now lost

the MP is synonymous with the Red Moon because it decides when the others breed. This is lethal to people, and causes beasthood, because of the actions of Man. The MP drops when it craves kids, and doesn't give a fuck about the consequences that dumbass researchers would ensure happen
>>
>>123831667
No (un)fortunately
>>
>>123831571
Considering they're literally begging for death, I don't think she's doing them any favours.

And, considering that the church just went off and turned an orphanage into the celestial emissary, it doesn't look like she managed to help anyone at all.

I don't think people actually move, physically, into the nightmare when they enter it. It's just somewhere their conscious goes when their body is asleep or dead. The player character is an exception because you enter nightmares via a celestial god teleporting you. Most of those blood-drunk hunters probably either died in the real world, or became actual beasts, and I'd image in the same goes for the patients. I don't think it's easy, or even normally possible for people to move between nightmare and reality at will. Mensis seemed to need to sacrifice the entirety of their town (including themselves) to pull it off.
>>

guys I've been wondering

did the Orphan of Kos really ever exist? From the NPC dialogue at the beginning of the Fishing Hamlet, the dude says "mercy for the poor wizened child", and "wrath of Mother Kos".I mean it's clear that Kos wasn't initially a corpse and got a long with the villagers just fine (hey they didn't mind being turned into fish people by the parasites). I suppose this is where Byrgernwerth steps and starts kidnapping and experimenting on the villagers. This is just speculation, but I guess Byrgenwerth approached Kos too and somehow ended up killing up her via experimentation (I can't think of any other reason for her corpse).

It's also possible that Byrgenwerth stopped shy of going full on in on experimentation thanks to Willem, and this is where Laurence would have splintered off to form the Healing Church. He probably wanted more aggressive research done in regards to Kos' blood. Laurence could have claimed that the Fishing Hamlet was filled with beasts and got the Hunters to clean house, killing Kos in the process. This would explain the curse placed directly onto the Hunters themselves, (the Harrowed Set guy says this pretty plainly).

Since unborn children/miscarriages seem to be a recurring theme in BB, I guess Kos might have been pregnant or something (I guess Kos is a great one that has a reproductive cycle similar to humans?) and the Healing Church/Hunters killing her robbed her of her life and child's birth. If we consider that Great Ones long for children, you can be sure that Kos/Unborn Orphan were pissed off by that. The Healing Church was probably aware of the unborn child, since the School of Mensis goes on to summon the One Reborn, which draws a lot of parallels to the Orphan of Kos.

Back to the Orphan only existing in the nightmare realm. When the Player Character initially confronts it, it's a just a huge bag of rage and viciousness. (cont'd)
>>
>>123832075
>she didn't do them any favors and didn't manage to help people in the long run
I never said it was a particularly successful attempt -- she does kill herself instead of going ham on the Church, which would be way more beneficial in the end

Also, the Old Hunters physically disappeared from reality when they got sucked into the Nightmare, I forget which item mentions this

>>
>>123832760
The Kos Parasite description mentions that she washed up on shore as a carcass. She was dead before humanity ever made contact. Kos is also called the bloodless one by the fish people, so your blood theory is a little bunk.

But yes, the orphan was likely stillborn, and only ever lived within the nightmare after its mother died before carrying it to term.

>>
>>123830081
The Choir likely occupies the Research Hall in real world Yharnam at the moment(that or Ebrietas somehow destroyed it all in present Yharnam, and the Altar of Despair is all that remains, just riffing), but there's nothing specifically referring to the Choir in the DLC. In fact, we're told that all of the experimentation we see there is a reflection of the "the early days of the Healing Church" at which point we don't know that the Choir existed. Given that the pinnacle of all this research seems to have been the Living Failures(which are... Failures) we can assume the Choir came along later and probably refined the process, resulting in the Emissary, whom the trophy tells us is a genuine Great One, though kin.

There are statues missing from the Nightmare Lumenflower Gardens as well as the path that leads to the Upper Ward/Orhpanage which again is nowhere to be found in the Nightmare's geography. I'm certain that the Nightmare is reflection of a time before the Choir existed. The only evidence I see against this is Loch shield description saying it was used for Isz expeditions in particular, which we're told the Choir had done at some point, resulting in contact with Ebrietas. The description doesn't specifically mention the Choir though, and says only later was it used by Tomb Prospectors.

(cont'd)

The Orphan is portrayed as the culmination of Kos'/Fishing Hamlet's hatred towards Hunters/Healing Church. Gehrman's connection to this seems is super speculative, but he must have been there since the Fishing Hamlet is the beginning of everything. I read an anon's post saying that Gehrman might have been the one to kill Kos herself and that makes a lot of sense to me. Throughout the game we see that there are similarities between the Dreams and Nightmares, but not entire 1-1 conversions. Like the Winter Lanterns appear to wear the Doll's clothes, but there isn't a really strong connection between the two. Rather then the Orphan of Kos being the Nightmare equivelant of Gehrman, it's more accurate to say that Gehrman's possible guilt/regret shaped the form of the Orphan. I don't think From would use the same soundbite of Gehrman crying on the Orphan just to save some resources.

This also paints Maria's relationship with Gehrman in a more strained light. The Rakuyo's item description states that she threw her weapon into the well when she couldn't stomach the actions of the Healing Church/Hunters anymore. She must have been there along with Gehrman and they could have had a falling out. Gehrman's obsession with Maria makes sense this way, it's a mix of fascination and endless guilt/regret. The Doll even talks about Gehrman a bit when you kill the Orphan so there is definitely a connection between the two.

I haven't fully thought about the Sweet Child of Kos' role in all this though.

idk.

I think you'd want to do Lower Loran also since it's where you get +20% stamina and +30% visceral. And a Blood Rock, if you care about those.

Half of them are impossible to kill anyway, so it'd be better to get them in a safe environment where noone can fuck with them.

And if they weren't put in the Nightmare like the Hunters on purpose (for whatever reason), then why are they there at all?

>I wonder, is anything ever established towards why Good Hunter is special?
go look at the achievement percentages and tell me how many good hunters are special

the thing is it makes perfect sense that you're the "first hunter to git gud" since out of a million or two players , a huge portion give up after reaching some personally impassable barrier

"you are the chosen one (among like a hundred thousand chosen ones)" works better when the game is not "expected" to be beat (via liberal checkpointing, etc.)

Why is Micolash considered a boss?
He's more of a cowardly NPC Hunter with a megaphone and a marionette fetish.
