Now that I've got enough time to look at it and now that I've seen these threads, the game isn't all that spectacular. It's got some clever characters here and there, but it kinda seems like Toby drew a lot from webcomics and internet forums to try and make his stuff funny. It's not a bad thing, but it does make the game seem somewhat trite when viewed from anywhere other than an internet denizen's point of view.

I kind of know what you mean. A lot of Undertale is very derivative. Like how Toriel and Asgore look like the Mimigas from Cave Story. But I still think it's pretty good. But mainly I think people really liked Undertale because of the good soundtrack and the funny characters, both of which were actually pretty original.

It's a good game, don't get me wrong. It's a good game and it deserves some of the praise it's getting. Some of the funny characters were very original...

But some of the other characters felt like tropes. At this point, I'm nitpicking to nitpick, but it just felt as if he was doing archetypes so that his game would be memorable, instead of having them fit in properly into the story.

As for the soundtrack, he put some very good songs and soundbytes into the game. I loved that he put in Leene's Bell from Crono Trigger and the Oh-My-Hero opera song from FF6. I hope he wasn't just doing it so people would say 'hey, I get that', since he put them in some very fitting places.

Another neat musical cue is how Toby uses his few songs very well. His rehashing of various themes from the game, like the Dogsong and Flowey's theme, really drew the later experiences of the game together. You can tell that Toby fits better as a composer than he does a game dev.
