Not the guy you're arguing with but 30k is pretty good if the game is 10$ and the team is 2 people max.

It's a single guy, I think a publisher, and the game is about $6 I think.

Have another one. Broforce. 400k owners
>>
>>123706865
Well 400k is a huge success we shouldn't care about it but 30k for a 1MA is pretty good without being a huge hit, I'd rather look at average "successful" games than big hits.
>>
>>123707000
nice trips
duck game sold more than 100k and it's a very fun and simple game
>>
>>123707000
The difference between big hits and average "successful" games doesn't really have a lot to do with art quality, unless it's something that looks obviously good and better than everything like, I dunno, Ori or something
>>
>>123706453

What makes this game different from Shovel Knight and all the other nostalgic circlejerk games?
>>
Hell, dreaming sarah was made here and has 40k owners. You know sales and bundles really tamper with the data, but that's a fucking lot.

>>123707191
About half of the game content (weapons, levels, bosses) is hidden and you can get to the final boss without even noticing the stuff. A fuckton of stuff to explore, different builds and stuff. It's my personal goty, if that means anything to you.
>>
That example of vector art you showed before the argument started (Ninja Gaijin) has a simple look that reminds many of those by the dozen flash games on sites like newgrounds/miniclip.

Maybe its just that specific character design. Games like Darkest dungeon get away with it by mostly hiding it with that gothic and painted artstyle.

When it looks like I can SEE where the guy got his mouse and placed the line curve points then it gives it a "cheap look".
>>
>>123706865

We clearly know why this game sold and it certainly has nothing to do with the art nor the gameplay.

I can tell you if it's of bad quality or not and if you're in some kind of bubble where people notice your things out of pity or something. Also I don't know what numbers are you talking about here. If you're getting 10s or 100s of VIEWS then you just have a low follower count and you're trying to get noticed too early. Build a bigger follower count (by making your game better) and then go from there. If you're getting 10s or 100s of LIKES then you probably have over 1K followers and at that point you should have more than just devs seeing your stuff.
>>
>>123710782
10s to 100s per tweet, that is. I'm just talking impressions. I get anywhere from 0-20 retweets depending on what the thing is. It's garbage meaningless circle jerk retweets though.

You have a game so good that tons of people retweet it. Tons of people retweeting random gifs of your game will get you a high follower count of people who are interested in your game. But first your game has to be good enough to get people to retweet in en masse. You're in a bubble because your game isn't good enough yet to get people so amazed by it that they have to share it with their followers.

You're trying to get one thing before the other. You don't get mass exposure without having a solid fanbase first unless you get lucky. If you wanna rely on luck then good luck, but the solid and reasonable way of doing this is doing what I said.

Also, kill yourself. I'm giving you advice and you keep acting like a dickhead. No wonder your game is shit that doesn't get noticed, since you can't even take simple feedback like this your game can't be that good. Drop the ego, get your head out of your ass or you'll never make it.

Also, that's actually my point. It is simple feedback. It's just too simple. You're essentially saying "improve your game and try again", which I am doing. It's an iterative process. And self promotion is obviously a no-no in pretty much any gaming community.

>I'm just wondering how I branch out to regular people
You should focus on making some aspect of your game amazing first that it gets hundreds/thousands of likes/retweets. After you get a signal like that understand why it happened on that particular gif and then test to see if you get it to happen again. Either way, the gif that happened on is something you can use to reach a wider audience and is something that has a higher chance of getting to the top of a subreddit or to the top of imgur, or get a ton of visibility on tumblr. Once you start consistently getting those kinds of responses over multiple social media outlets you'll start to have more material to work with for normal people to be amazed at and it will be easier to build a following. It's the same with money. The more you have the easier it is to get more. The more quality gifs that went big you have the easier it is to get more people to pay attention to you. But it's a waste of time to try to spend time getting there before you have something of good quality that people genuinely thought was amazing.

here's the thing, anon.

My game comes out next year. Pretty good following. I really like my own project and things are looking kinda good.

But I never post progress here. Or let anyone know that I even go here. I avoid as much as possible that my game is associated with AGDG.

Why is this?
I love AGDG.
I think it's an awesome place, and it's a fixed tab on my browser 24/7.
But I look at everything that happens to devs that come here, and I'm scared of what would happen if I did the same. Or what other people in my team would think if they knew I'm posting my game here because "omg 4chan is dangeruz".

I really want to be an AGDG-dev.

A progress dev.

A yesdev.

...I just don't see the reason to.

On the topic of twitter, I'm really skeptical about how useful it really is for nobodies. Unless a game is coming out really soon, who actually gives a shit about unfinished games except for other developers who are trying to find drones to market for them?

And how do you explain the people who have tons of followers (I'm talking 3000+) whose games fails horribly?

Plus I have some (web) games that have gotten 50k+ plays (which isn't an amazing amount, but it's not bad considering I spent less than a month on them) yet when I post things on twitter I'm lucky to get 3 favorites or more than a single digit number of views. Apparently my stuff is both so horrible that nobody wants to look at it yet good enough to get ten of thousands of plays at the same time.

yeah, but another issue that arises is as follows: Do you get a trip? If so, do you use it for every game you post here? Do you change up? Is the purpose of any of the devs here to be recognized through a single name?

I might eventually post here, I don't know. I'll have to think about it.

>>
I'm working on a text based RPG, and I've been working on my combat system's design pattern for a couple days.

I've got one List that stores both teams of combatants (in a way that could potentially handle 2, 3, or even more teams.) Another List stores references to all the combatants organized by their Speed stat as a queue. A single function pops the next actor out of the queue at the beginning of their turn.

Now, currently my Character classes have a function that selects a random target from the other team and attacks them on their turn, so I need to implement a way of calling and passing in choices for the player's team while keeping the AI for the enemy.

Obviously I could do it with if statements but that seems messy. My current idea is to extend my Character class into one for Player-controlled actors and one for enemies, and have a single "select target" function that would be called for both. They would both have a different implementation, and the Player one would call a function to ask the user of input.

But then again, I feel like anything UI related like that should be handled outside of the character class. Maybe by some external class that's called in?

Any thoughts?
>>
>>123715998
Don't grab a trip, just talk about your game and post footage of it when you post here. It's the single best signal that it's a real dev.
>>
>>123715998
trip is bad if you use it for unrelated posts, we all post dumb stuff and when it can be backtracked to you well you get mentally ill pitchfork shitposters on your back

trip for gamedev only posts is fine imo
>>
>>123715491
>>123716081
something I forgot to mention. And several devs I really liked were chased away because of this shit.

Forget the trip.

It's extremely easy to either use the dev's name, or repost really old webm's to impersonate him. That led to some really confusing crap where people didn't know whether it was the dev of shitposting.

What then?

Valve seems to have removed all references to the cost on their site, and Google wasn't helpful though I didn't dig too deep. And I don't feel like emailing the Licensing Support email they offer until I know I'm gonna follow through with this game.

>>
>>123726816
So was saying it was a stupid reason without any qualification. You have a thing against Source. That's ok. But if you're going to shit on it and my experience offer an alternative.
>>
>>123726809
the API is really nice and easy to use, basically

and compared to source it supports much more advanced visual effects, better animations and larger worlds
>>
>>123727101

I guess that's something else I didn't like about it. I'm like, everything but a 3d artist. So I was worried about the need then to find a modeler to work in Unity. I would need to for Source as well, but I have several friends I've worked with before experienced in Sources content pipeline.
>>
>>123726939
It's a stupid reason because you can't refuse to move on because you're familiar and have experience with the old way. You've got to move on at some point otherwise we'd all still be making text games for room sized computers. With Source 2 in the works, even Valve has acknowledged that Source is archaic. It was programmed to work on old hardware that no one even owns anymore.
Even though you explicitly stated you didn't want an alternative, either of the meme engines are cheaper, easier, have more documentation, larger communities and are programmed with modern hardware in mind.

You don't need something unique and innovative to stand out. Seriously, just go look at the games released on Steam. You can make something very derivative and add your own spin to it and it'll be unique enough. What you need to worry about is making it solid. This is where most people fail. Make something solid and you'll succeed. It's really as simple as that.

that's probably it, as long as you understand classes.

maybe try MonoGame? it's probably the easiest way to get stuff on the screen in C# and there's a bunch of tutorials for it (or XNA which is basically the same)
>>
>>123731760
FYI Unity doesn't like it if your objects have constructors, if they inherit from MonoBehaviour

Also Generics are pretty cool, and lambda functions
>>
>>123732008
The engine probably has no limits. (except for maybe some hard-coded values, and maybe the 32bit/64bit memory limits)
The limitson how many X's you can Y depends on your computer.

>0 from 4chan by the way.

Is Monogame as easy to use as Unity? I know that from a programming standpoint Monogame, well... IS Unity right... or at least Unity is like a big visual tool/library built off of Monogame?

The thing I want most from Unity is its multi-platform ability which Monogame shares.

>>123733113
I've watched and followed some Unity tutorials but a big problem I have had is that the tutorials are out of date and stuff they do works fine but my code/steps copied exactly don't work. Monogame seems to re-design their shit less though.

If making games through tutorials and experimentation is the way to go then I'll do that. So is Monogame a better route then? I don't really plan on making games that use physics, I have a design bias towards tabletop RPG's, and Simulationist PC games like sports managers/strategy/tycoon games.

It is, because by choosing to live in the country you implicitly agree to follow the government's policies, one of which is the fact that whether you own a gun or not is their business.
If you don't like it, you should move to a country where gun registration isn't required.

same goes for politicians that want to change the rules of the country that they didn't make, they just got voted into office.

If they want to bring in registration then they have to leave and go move to a country that was founded on the principles of registration, they're not allowed to just add it after the fact when more people already live in that country.

I didn't say making changes to policy wasn't allowed. The government has no policies that prevent changes to government policy.
Writing your local member of congress or becoming a politician yourself in order to enact policy changes that would result in the removal of the requirement to register guns would be perfectly acceptable.
Owning unregistered guns because "I think that law is stupid, so it doesn't apply to me." is not acceptable.

The point being if I don't think its the governments business I can also just ignore them and face the consequence if it arises. Note that I don't even own a gun. I just think that in the US anyways its none of the governments fucking business and you shouldn't be a complete tool of the government if you think what they are doing is unjust.

I used to believe in the rule of law, faith in the government (inb4 lol) etc. But then the police rejected body cams, and I realized how it all was just a thick layer of BS spread over everything to give us an excuse to comply without feeling oppressed.

I'm afraid of things in general though, so while I'd like to smoke pot I don't want to die during a police raid or give them an excuse to look through my computer so I'm spending my life waiting for the government to allow me to get high, rather than risking the consequences. It sucks and now I just smirk when I hear about tragedy, whereas before I would have taken it seriously.

this post is videogames because i would have liked to play lolisimdevs game, but the government could wreck my shit if i did

You might think that's a bad decision, I think that's a bad decision, its destructive to society and selfish, but its an option that exists.

The mentality of "the gov'ment says no so I can't" is extremely dangerous and destroys your inherent ability of having a human mind.

Why, though? There are no laws that say you have to do that, and you are not violating any laws by not doing that.
This is completely different from not registering firearms, since you are actively violating laws by owning an unregistered firearm.

Rebellion via demonstration is not necessary in first world countries nowadays, though. If you disagree with a policy, why not enact change through legal means such as contacting your government representatives, voting, or engaging in politics yourself?
If you truly think a policy should be different, why not work to change it instead of simply disregarding it?
>>
>>123740639
lol fucken nerd

think about the intent of that law
if YOU commit a crime with your firearm, it helps authorities track where it came from, which can aid in solving the crime

if you are a law abiding citizen there is no benefit to you or the gubmint for you to register your guns

the potential drawback though is that the gobmint knows you have a gun, so in the unlikely event of the gubmint cracking down on its citizens and taking away their freedumbs (which is the whole point of the second amendment. not likely to happen any time soon but history repeats), you'd still be able to defend yourself

tldr: registering firearms is only beneficial to society if criminals do it, and only harms good people in certain extreme situations that the constitution protects against
>>
>>123740814
That's true. But it doesn't make you safe. Since there are no laws or requirements relating to those actions, performing them does not make you any more safe than not performing them.

Because you think the original implementation of the governmental system which used to work has been bloated and corrupted to the point where its a non functioning organism that literally does nothing but make itself and its constituents bigger without any regard for the people its supposed to serve (or in my opinion, just not get in the way of.)

Friendly reminder that the prohibition period was like ~80 years ago, government banned alchohol, and everyone literally just said "dude fuck off" and then the government did.

>if you are a law abiding citizen there is no benefit to you or the gubmint for you to register your guns
Unless it's stolen and the police happen to arrest the guy on an unrelated charge, and then return it to you by tracking you down from the serial number.

Additionally, not all gun crime is committed by hardened criminals who buy them off the black market. Plenty homicides are committed by people using their personal -registered- handguns, whether slightly premeditated or in the heat of the moment. Or the gun is grabbed by someone close to the owner and used in a crime, which means the police can then track down the criminal via looking at the family and friends of the gun owner.

There's a large grey region between "law-abiding citizen" and "hardened criminal." Even if a person has followed the law their entire life, it's possible that circumstances in their life could lead to them committing a homicide with a firearm. It's possible that it could be their firearm. And if they were previously a law-abiding citizen, it's highly likely that the firearm would be registered. Which would assist police in solving the crime.

Gun registration laws have done a lot of good, so far.

True, but I believe if a person disagrees with a policy and has the means to change it, they should do so instead of ignoring it. There's a difference between legal means of protest and illegal means of protest. And choosing to disregard the law because you don't believe it should apply to you can take a person down a path to more serious crime, crimes that affect other peoples' lives.

I'm not a fan of making broad legislation because a few people are retarded. "This guy abused X so now NOBODY gets to do it" is a mentality that creates a society where least intelligent and least responsible people have the power of change instead of the greater power of the majority of people doing the right responsible thing most of the time. Its not worth the loss in personal freedom in my opinion.

>>123741653
For some reason non retarded conservatism is very hard to find. I just think a lot of problems should be solved through raising our children better, building a stronger community, and teaching people to think for themselves. The government doesn't have to fix everything through legislation, and especially not through the methods it uses, eg. "interpreting the modern spirit of an amendment", sneaking legislation through completely unrelated bills, or as a nock to thr republican party filibustering until the government shits itself on the taxpayers dime.

I'm done with amateur civil rights dev general right now but seriously...

Legislation and societal movements built around removing personal responsibility(such as the responsibility for one to make his own choice and suffer the consequences) from a citizen is poisoning to the concept of inherent human liberty and free will.

>I'm not a fan of making broad legislation because a few people are retarded.
Generally, that stance is sensible. However, what of laws that have virtually no impact on the non-retarded, but still curb the actions of the retarded?
Gun registration does nothing to hurt people that never commit crimes with their guns outside of the very hypothetical country-wide martial law scenario. And that case, realistically, would not happen. The government would need soldiers to carry out such a scenario, and I doubt there would be a bigger portion of the military that is okay with taking away guns by force and executing dissidents and such, than those that aren't okay with it.
In the situation in which the military was for some reason on-board with it, though? The civilians would have no chance. Surveys estimated that in 2010, 35% of the US population owned guns, about 105 million people. In 2013, there were 1,369,532 people in active duty in the US armed forces. So the civilians are already outnumbered. But then the armed forces also have jets, tanks, missiles, specialized armor, and everything else afforded to the armed forces of a first-world country. Meanwhile the civilians have only guns and possibly IEDs. It's not like the Revolutionary War where the colonists were on moderately equal footing with the British as far as land equipment went. Both sides had guns and both sides had cannons, and that was about it.

It's highly unlikely that the US goverment would go full Nazi on its citizens like so many gun owners fear, but if it did, the civilians would have no chance.

Outside of all that, gun registration does nothing to hurt people who don't commit crimes with their guns, and does a decent amount to hurt people who do commit crimes with their guns.
So why is gun registration a bad thing?

>>
>>123743858
>>123743909
Eh. You have to have a little bit of leeway for intrepid players who fuck with everything. But yes, it can't completely define the meta of your game. Something like backdash canceling in SotN and the other CastleManias, it's useful and a lot of people abuse it, but it's not necessary to really go HAM with it for casual play
>>
>>123743858
No a good example would be in a turn based cardgame where a play existed that could be considered a "noob trap" because it "seemed" decent but is a bad play 95% of the time but there's some specific high level scenarios where based on the game state its a good decision. catering to the retards would be removing it because its common noob trap while lowering the learning and skill curve of your game.

In general making decisions based on the assumption your players will not learn, or will give up before trying to learn instead of assuming that they will learn because they aren't retarded and they want to learn the game that they are playing.
>>
why WHY do I even try to become ant good
>>
>>123744156
That's the kind of thing you actually should remove since it'll just frustrate new players and turn them off. A good example of this happening is SF4; it has a really bad reputation of being hard to play and I've never met someone outside the core FGC that is willing to play it, for the exact reason that there's so many "noob traps" and the game in general is intentionally so prohibitively hard to learn.

But we were talking about legislation, your analogy doesn't apply at all.
A rule is not "a play".

Also in your example, noob traps could be considered bad design if the purpose of your game is to be played by many people instead of a hardcore niche. If you want to make the most hardcore of niche games, go ahead, but be warned of what that entails.

>>
>>123744385
The numbers I gave in that example would definitely warrant finding a better alternative to the mechanic. In competitive games I think its good for the effectiveness of a "noob trap" to change based on the skill of both opponents. Its good for their to be initial obvious first options "in SC@ this could be counted as a 3 rax rush" there's not very much decision making and its a simple process of refined execution that can yield good results for a player starting the game to learn later stages of the game. Inevitably there should be a hum where that strategy becomes ineffective because of the opponents skill where the player using it is force to adapt and start learning about plan B's and alternative strategies.

At high level play I think its good in games where things become full circle and the game starts becoming about a struggle of second best options, the best/most effective option being obvious and counter-able, instead its about countering countering counter strategies of teh best option... Something two noobs playing would never consider.

tldr: new players generally play a completely different game than professional/high level players
new players play around trying to solve the game
old players play around trying to solve players who have solved the game

A poorly designed game (dominion) doesn't reach the second stage really.
A well design game "for the most part, I think extremely high level play is imbalanced because Zain is retarded" (Yomi) is entirely designed around the second level of play.

Its hard to get to the point where your actually PLAYING YOMI because knowing the rules is only a very minor step.

I'm terrible at games. The people who tend to be good and competitive at games are the people who can separate themselves from their bias and learn easily from their mistakes which makes them able to adapt really well. I tend to want to play a game a certain way.

eg. Veigar in league of legends S2 was pretty solid at one shotting people and tricking people into lane dominance by taking advantage of the an item called Deathfires Grasp and peoples general incompetence at fighting him since he wasn't played much. They changed DFG, and people got better and that strategy stopped working, instead of switching it I tried to find ways to make it keep working. Even as they added characters that countered Veigar and nerfed items he took advantage of I kept playing him the same way and tried to make up for it by getting higher cs, missing less stuns and executing better. I had a bias of being a veigar player and not seeing him as a set of mechanics and more as the original feel of what it was like to play him.

Aka I don't plan on making competitive games because I'm terrible at that type of mindset. I still get asked to playtest them a lot by people that do make them though, I'm not entirely sure why.

>>123745649
Yomi is a card game so it doesn't really have controls. Both players also play their cards face down so it becomes about knowing your character, their character, and trying to control the game state based on mix-ups and hand control. Aka knowing that you draw 7 cards, that attacks beat throws, throws beat blocks and dodges, and block and dodges beat attacks doesn't really help you when every character is designed around utilizing those essential laws in different ways.

I only play Rook in Yomi and he breaks one of those essential rules by not having dodges.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyi_X_q3sXw

btw traditional games are great for learning things imo.

>implying I even said I was good at Yomi
>implying I didn't say "I don't plan on making competitive games because I'm terrible at that type of mindset."

I have a background in rules heavy tabletop RPGs which are generally imbalanced and operate on a rule of the "House" that basically exists to say that every player at the table is responsible for the games fun.

You can break the game easy but if your objective in a tabletop RPG is to break the game for everyone then your a shitter who wants to ruin everyone's fun and "the game designers should have balanced it better" is a cop out excuse for being a dick tbqvh. The same rule applies to single player games.

If you try your very hardest to break or trivialize the games mechanics then all your doing is ruining your own time playing the game and you really have no right to complain. I'm not saying to completely ignore balance but sacrificing options and content in an RPG in favor of a sleek well balanced system is contradictory to the point of the genre.

I mean that is obviously an opinion that's just my preference but I think its a massive waste of brainpower and resources heavily balancing a single player role playing game.

Maintaining uniform texture density across all models in your game is non-trivial. It's possible, but you're probably better off just eyeballing it into the same ballpark. Tons of AAA games have massively varying texture densities, especially comparing things like characters to the environment, or hero characters to random NPCs.

Was less of an issue back in the PS1 days since resolution of the video output was lower than the texture resolutions in the first place.

No one's asking it to be 1:1 on each object, but it should maintain the same general aesthetic. If you have the computational/memory/artistic budget to have a high res little ball, the walls around should be just as high res if not moreso.

What are my options for shaking a sprite in GMS? The object that I want to shake shakes during a specific state so I gave it a draw event and did (pseudocode)

if(state)
draw(x+1-random(1), y+1-random(1)...etc)
else
draw(x, y)

This produces a kind of "jagged" shake though. I thought that reducing the frequency at which it actually used the random x and y would help so I added a framecount to the object and added && number%frame==0 to the first if statement (tested like 1-10 for 'number') but it produces the same effect because whether it moves frequently or infrequently the change in location is still severe but alas I'm a noob and can't think of an alternative method.

>or just rural areas really
rural areas have less crime because they have no people

property crime is higher because areas are less actively monitored just by grace of less foot traffic, and most high profile criminals come from rural or suburban areas because you can do whatever you want out there

every time you hear about some serial killer or school shooter, it's some angry white hick

>but I've also heard that in the states that crime correlates strongly with gang violence and with race
gang violence yes, race no. in the US, it correlates so strongly to race because there, race strongly correlates with poverty, which strongly correlates with crime. in most countries, it's more closely tied to social class than race. race is a poor signifier for whether someone will be prone to violence, despite what WorldStarHipHop will show you. except Haitians. they scum as a people.

I was joking, putting information on the internet by itself isn't dangerous as long as you're mindful of what you put up. A name isn't going to go anywhere without an address or photo attached to it. Most of these guys who get doxxed happily throw their info out through facebook or twitter, just don't do that and you're fine.
>>
>>123750063
>>123750187

>>
>>123750368
look up level design. Or make a mini roguelite in your game.
>>
>>123750042
Some people like grinding. Some people can't stand even a little. You have to decide where you stand on that spectrum.

More modern RPGs seem to use this sort of thing though: You can beat the game at level 1 if you're smart, and grinding just makes it easier for everyone else.

For an optimal experience, in my mind, you should make the game such that you cannot apply the same technique and consistently win. Even if your game has a level system and all that, but you can't just cruise-control through the whole game, then it won't feel like a grind.
>>
>>123750494
Just create a separate screen name, shill your game through it, and never ever ever EVER reference your real name under that screen name, or vice versa.
>>
>>123750494

I don't think the example to the right really has "lighting" so to speak.
It looks as though the shadows are hardcoded, not created based on the position of the torches. The glow of the torches themselves looks to just be a visual effect layered on top of everything else.

If you want actual dynamic lighting that still looks pixel-y, you'll probably have to write your own shader/code for it.
>>
>>123750828
It looks like hyper light drifter doesn't even have lighting, it just has color circles blended in + bloom (which may or may not just be baked into the sprites, I wasn't assed to look too long).

But I've tried going for it but then I've realized that it's really not what I want since I'd have to make every single sprite darker manually to compensate for the lighting and it's just a cheap way out. Not having to do this shit manually is exactly why I want to use lighting instead of pretending to have lighting with sprites.

Well, yes. If you want the lighting to be necessary for vision, the rest of the world must be darker than average. If you want the world to be clearly visible already, the lights will be nothing more than decorative.

I mean, you certainly could use real lighting. But you posted an example pic as what you wanted, and we told you how to get that.

when discussing demographics, you can't so easily just go A then B, B then C, so A then C because one of those might not always be true even if it is for your country and is true for a hard to change cultural reason

like, in Canada, blacks don't magically fuck up every community they touch, because the distribution of wealth is a bit more evenly spread out among races since we have lots of poor whites and plenty of middle class blacks. up here in snow communist land, it's filthy fukken natives that are our niggers, and for many of the same reasons US blacks are the worst. but it's not their race that's the bad thing, it's the GIBMEDATS culture and refusal to let go of century-old slights against "their people"

Based on the way the character shadows flip, it looks like the game is in three dimensional space, and all the sprites are actually models with no thickness. This means a light source creates shadows via the models blocking the light, but they still look like flat sprites.
As far as the floor, the floor itself doesn't create shadows in its creases like your first attempt does, it appears to be a strict light-dark gradient.

Make a flat three-dimensional plane, and texture it with your floor sprites, then move a light around over it, see how that works.

Because humans don't do much but actually stand there.

Heavy breathing gives a character something to do - It accentuates posture, and makes them visually interesting, rather than just a static image that may fiddle about once in a while.

I know you spend 100% of your time in your computer chair or bed, but people standing around do other things than heave up and down. Honestly it is hard to tell what exactly you want.
Just google Unity 2d Dynamic lighting and you might find what you ask for.

here are some example of what i found in a minute:

>http://robotloveskitty.tumblr.com/post/33164532086/legend-of-dungeon-dynamic-lighting-on-sprites
>http://gamasutra.com/blogs/MarcusBumer/20150302/237704/Dynamic_Character_Lighting_in_Unforeseen_Incidents.php
>http://www.mattgreer.org/articles/dynamic-lighting-and-shadows/

Also you said you would have to make all the sprites darker if you would use techniques of the previously mentioned posts, but you could also just darken the entire scene to balance saturation/contrast, or use a camera effect for that.

Swords are weighted towards the handle. half-swording and hitting with the sharp end would be like wielding a sledgehammer upside down. You can only stab with the sharp end if you're half-swording, which given the fact you have half the length to work with, is like trying to stab with a dagger using both hands, whereas you basically mace with which to knock them unconscious with when hitting with the other side.

>>123756404
you can maneuver your sword much better and strike more efficiently when half swording, with the main drawback being that you have very little reach and that it also leaves you open to a few shots you would normally be able to easily block. It can be useful against any opponent, but still mainly a situational thing.

If you want to know something really nuts, this was an almost viable thing to do in legal trials, as you usually had access to your weapon beforehand, so you could do things like make the pommel super loose.
>To finish him rightly, take your spear under your right arm and you sword and shield under your left, unscrew the pommel of your sword, and throw it at his face; in the same movement, drop your sword and shield, and take advantage of his confusion to stab him.

Yes, but a specific set of notes. Take a normal keyboard, for example. A scale is not restricting yourself to the first ten keys. A scale would be restricting yourself to a certain ten keys, spread across the entire keyboard. Scales tend to skip at least one or two keys between each usable key.

So if you've got a 2x2 box of four pixels that are the same color, that's a mixel now just because it looks like one big pixel?
>>
>>123757597
because nobody gives a fuck except the most hardcore AGDG autists that dont even make games
>>
>>123757941
It is if there's an entire sprite which uses 2x2 pixels as its basic unit

Friendly reminder hopoo has almost finished his second game while you haven't even finished your first.

Take lessons, learn harmony, scales, find a piano teacher, or any instrument. People these days are trying to make music without first learning how to make music.

>>
>>123757941
No, but when you've got a whole texture made out multiple 2x2 boxes of four pixels that are the same color with no 1x1 pixel boxes of 1 pixel that is the same color then it's pretty clear the texture has been blown up.
I doubt you can find a single 2x2 box of four pixels that are the same color that's by itself and not surrounded by other 2x2 boxes of four pixels that are the same color in that screenshot.

With the way all the popular engines are set up, this is something you actually have to address pretty early on.
