Warbros Server here.

Current server status: WE MOVED TO A NEW SERVER. SIMU SHOULD BE TITTIES.

To join up with us, follow these instructions.

First of all, you need to get into the access group. To do so, add/msg this guy:

To save yourself some loadtime, preload our mods. Subscribe the to collection here:

There is a preload world which is also part of the collection (offline, creative) which you should start once to prod all mods to download: > http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=529237944
You can also use that for offline building, blueprinting and then building on the serbian later. I don't care if you want this server to be vanila, it won't be. It's a shitload of mods, but they have been weighted and tested and they work. Half of them are tweaks and visual shit (no beacon glare, for example) anyway.

WARNING. 1.5GB OF DATA. COURIER PIDGEON INTERNET BEWARE.

You will be invited to a group called "Warbros Space Engineers". That group works as a whitelist. Only people in that group will be able to join the server. That is so I can control better who has access and we don't get unwashed pubbies. Not a circlejerk, you jerks.

Quick rule overview:
- Don't be a dick.
- No megalomanic superbuilds. It's bad for performance and FPS.
- No grid spam, every ship/thing you build is a calculated physics object that eats performance. So, no drone swarms, eh?
- PvP is opt-in between two (or more) consenting parties. No ifs, no butts.
- Only one drill per player. Take the Large Ship Earthbreaker, it's a good drill. Why? Drilling kills the game for everyone. Simu speed drops like a white city girl taking a moonshine shot down South.
- Keep Welders/Grinders to a minimum. Not talking about your average welder with 8 Compacts, but avoid grind platforms.
- Talk to me if you have issues. Don't just shitpost on /egg/, talk to me. I'll see what I can do.

Some general stuff:

READ THE FAQ (pic related) AND SAVE EVERYONE SOME TIME.

- Server is running in Survival-10-10-10 game mode.
- You are encouraged to make your own faction. Warbros will auto-accept peace. Buddy up with someone, make things happen.
- Warbros faction will not hold your hand. We'll hep if you are conveniently close and can spare the time/resources, though.
- The server will have some QoL addons, such as the helmet mod. Read the description and understand it. Protip: Turn of the glass reflection, set the shadow scale so there is no shadow and deactivate delayed movement.
- Another is Chat History. Type /ch to see the last 50 messages typed in /global. Might help with catching up.
- Also, Build Info, which gives you information about blocks you're placing. Turn it on/off with /buildinfo in /global chat.
- There's three respawn ships, the Sparkies. It has all you need to survive, some mats, beacon, solars, nuke reactor, refinery/assembler, air. Spawn in one of those and set out to meet the cold void. Keep in mind that Sparkies cannot land on planets because lol thrust. One of them can hover above the Moon and Europa, though.
- There will not be a Starter Zone for new players, unless you make and maintain one. But Conker wants to. Get in contact with Conker and help him rebuild Centrepoint Station.
- The server is set to autosave every 15 minutes. There are no manual saves. Expect crashes and reboots.

You might want to grab the Warbros UI, too. See through menus and generally improved visibility and an increased G Menu size.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=375575227
I run it with the yellow font pack.

Offline raidfags, pls go. You are butts.

>driving around
>"silver detected, 65m down"
>dig a tunnel
>"silver detected, right fucking here"
>no silver here
>dig tunnels in random directions

Someone on reddit said the problem is that it detects two unconnected deposits and shows you the midpoint between their locations. So for the second try:
>drive to the very edge of detection range for the silver
>backing up at all makes the reading disappear
(Now in theory, it should be just barely in range of this one deposit, and no others.)
>set "transmit to antennas" on the ore detector
>dig a tunnel, following the transmitted location

Pic related are the three Sparkies you can pick from.

When the server crashes - as in, "host has left the game", and it wasn't an announced reboot, help out by giving me some sort of summary of what was going. If you were online, please describe in detail what you were doing as it happened.

e.g.:
>Started to grind a 1x5 ramp block
>Crashed my new fighter into my main cargo hold
>Fired 50 gravgun projectiles at Joe, fuck Joe, I am glad he's dead.

This will help to find and hopefully prevent such things in the future. Thanks.

Also don't jump the ATeam bus. Any vehicle with wheels will crash the server on using jump drives.

I have followed 6 or 7 different readings at this point (4 in the current mine, 2 or 3 in the previous one). For each one I have mined all the way up to the marker and cleared all the stone around it. If there was any silver at all in that location, the marker should have either moved or disappeared when I mined it out.

Have other people really not been getting these bogus ore detector readings? Or is it just that nobody knows a good solution yet?

Okay, so, here's the good and the bad.

The good: We're never lost, because backups are made every day.
The bad: In the current save, all azimuth cans, reactors, batteries, thrusters, ore detectors and your moms are gone.
The ugly: We have to roll back to yesterday.

Here we go. Server now runs a modified, cleanup version of the 24th backup. Let's hope this was the last in a long series of painful hits. I am sorry for all this, as far as I can be reponsible, and I am looking forward to the future on our new server.

Server stability is not a measure of mods. The workshop breaking is Steam's fault. The crashes we have experienced were also not mod related. This entire discussion is moot and tained by half-knowledge. Mods do not affect simulation speed or lag either.

Mods do one thing, and one thing only: They add to load times.

I'm all for mods, but to make a blanket statement that mods don't affect the sim speed is absolutely false. Most mods might not affect it, but there are plenty that do.
>>
>>123399967
But it's not. Take a given world. Leave all grids and floaters, characters, etc. untouched. Run it 100, or, hell, 200 mods. Remove all mods. Load the same world. Same simulation speed. We've tested this extensively on the first Warbros server. The primary loss of simulation speed is the amount of grids present.

>>123400104
Yes. That is a (one time) load time. My statement stays unassailed.

Higher poly models also affect FPS, not simulation speed. Additionally, many mods use simple models or "vanilla style" models. We even have mods that simplify blocks, such as the "low poly conveyor block". And mods like the armor panels or ramp extensions are literally a handful tris. Mods like the hydrogen/oxygen pack reskin existing models, also not adding any tris.

Weapons with faster firing speeds

is there no hope for a good space engineering game. not decent or even great, just a good game.

Starmade is... Starmade. It would take years to get anywhere even remotely close to good, and their doing some huge AI Crew push which i foresee being buggy as shit and a quick march to release and forgotten after that.

Got that Empyrion game, but its lacking in a lot of ways. Most of all graphically.

I think that's pretty much it for space engineering games. I just want a workshop station to craft my resource and shits and fly around in space

plasma has been reduced to shit
nano heals less and does a lot less damage
rails are basically a downgrade to smgs
hovers are more solid now
hover rudder trick does not work since it was unfair to the idiotic masses
triforcing/armor spacing has been basically removed
flight ceiling has been lowered
aerofoils lift less and drag more
helium? those are in every sense of the way useless. lot less lift, lot more drag.
mech legs have insane hp and stability.
thrusters got a nerf if I remember correctly
sanic thruster glitch removed
eplates have been nerfed

and it was a lot worse before, even the cancerous community started the shitstorm against the changes on the official forums

I find it to be faster, outside of doing aesthetic bits, as you have to constantly rotate the sloped blocks and fit things and.. man that gives me an apathy headache just thinking about it.

It's part of why all of my crafts are ugly wedges and cubes. The other part is 4m metal beams being > every other block, so everything I build is divisible by 4 for maximum beams.

Avoid the mouse-building like the plague, keyboard building is where it's at. Once you internalize the keys it's surprisingly quick and easy to use.

ss13mapfag here, should be almost done with the updated map. Added an asteroid on a new z-level, added a couple of goodies to the shuttle, fixed the amount of sheets the glass/metal/plastic on board has. Also, added another 1GB of dolphin porn.

All I need to do now is make sure the mining shuttle goes from the outpost to the station and back again and I'll upload the changes, then start another test run.

Normally you're right.
However on the introduction of megabots there was a mechanic that you could abuse with meatshielding which brought up some interesting engineering challenges.

On the introduction of the MOBA gamestyle there was another mechanic you could abuse. It wasn't as engineering heavy but breaking the new gamemode was still hilarious.

Daily reminder the game 'may' be going in the right direction now with removal of hitscan, removal of tiers etc etc and perhaps there'll be some fun to be had again.

One small problem to fix, mining shuttle won't move back to the station because it'll wreck shit otherwise. Toying around with it a bit, check if it works and then start hosting again.
>>
>>123470521
Slimes die on cold, but maybe two grey slime cores could work. When you inject them with plasma they create a slime.
But why would you want slimes anyways?

>>123470728
There isn't need for a lot of plastic, it can be grown from botany later on.
For the shuttle check the dock direction and placement
>>

Summary
This week we added a new feature that makes the connection of two stations easier when they are built in each other's vicinity. So from now on, you don’t need to use the merge blocks to connect them. Newly placed station creates an area of 1000 cubic meters around it.
When you try to place another station within the area, it will be aligned by default with the first station, therefore you can connect them by blocks.
And last but not least, we have fixed more bugs.
Features
- Local coordinates sector

Balancing
- increased jetpack duration on planets to around 1 minute of flight on earth
- increased atmospheric thruster power by 20% for both large and small ships
- cockpits and chairs have their selection boxes enlarged for much easier use

Fixes
- fixed memory leak when reloading world
- fixed crash with power distribution
- fixed crash when using Space Master
- fixed crash when flying around planet

Once again, it's fucking nothing. Who the hell EVER complained that they needed to be able to do this? If anything it places a restriction on construction should you want to place seperate structures close-by in specific positions. Not sure why you'd want to do that, but I can almost guarantee that someone will pipe up wishing that they could still do it.

>implying there's any other worthwhile way to produce electricity
Geothermal, nuclear, combustion or whatever.
All of the above rely on steam to get anything done.
Hydroelectric plants rely on turbines as well, but these are driven by gravity instead of high-pressure gas.
>>
>>123478230
That's actually a thing in silicon valley, except with interns instead of pidgeons.
It's a hell of a lot faster to fill a backpack full of harddrives with a clusterfuck of data and have an intern carry it around than it is to clog your internet connection with it.
>>
>>123480693
An airborne vehicle is by all measures the ideal first vehicle in the FtD campaign.
Most of the designs you'll be facing in the early-game have jackshit for anti-air, so you can make cheap fliers by skimping on armour.
High mobility means you can push more aggressively and still respond to any raiding parties.

Fuel might be a concern if you're using custom jets in a version with localized resources, in which case logistics might be an issue.
If that's not the case, then you've made one of the better opening moves.

All I am seeing is someone spilling more position packets than a turbonerd spills spaghetti, and then the serbian stops responding, like a frightened freshman during rolecall on the football field.

I'll ceck some shit. I dunno. Let's hope it's just the provider buttfucking our host. There are no crash log entries on the serbian, just a loss of connection on client side. This smells like Keen though.

Then I tried to log in this time, I was on the respawn screen for about 2 minutes, hadn't done anything, and then the host left.

So, just got a new mail from our hoster. Apparently, we are running on dedicated 4790k server, clocked to 4.3GHz - and that beast of a server can handle 5 instances of SE before it slows down. He's saying this is not economically feasible. (Literally "this pays essentially nothing") I'mma check if I can just pay them double for preferential treatment.

The current losses in simu speed seem to be from them experimenting how many instances one can run on one server.

>>
>>123494816
What I'm saying is, the server itself is stable as a rock and a beast. Keen, on the other hand, made their dedicated server a wobbly piece of shit with poor runtime efficiency, which they attempt to combat with overclocked CPUs and low instances per (physical) server. Essentially, this >>123495296. This also decides how profitable running SE servers is.

And, yes. Ideally, I'd get a dedicated root server, 20 slots, just us on there. That'd run me ~100$ a month. The current hosting solution is ~40$ for 3 months. I'm not gonna charge anyone for playing, but I also am not gonna shell out 100 bucks a month for something like this.

>>123495183
The problem is, you need strong single core performance, which contemporary Xeons don't have, because it's fucking backasswards.

I'll see if I can pursuade them to make a "Premium" option like they do for CS:GO and other ESL games, where you pay more but get more performance.

>>123495220
They have automatic scripts looking for updates/hotfixes every 20 minutes. Pretty good solution for Keens fuckery.

That bit of commentary needs to make it back to Keen somehow. They're bound to realise that a huge chunk of Spengies attractiveness is derived from the prospect of building and CLANGing shit with other players.
A server tech telling them that they're making a fucking dog's dinner out of something with so much potential might make them pick up the pace on the netcode.

Hey anons, recently bought Space Engineers during the 50% off sale at the recommendation of a friend. Been digging it so far, reminds me of Space Build 2/3 from gmod.

However with all settings low I've been getting a solid 19-23 fps on planets and a unstable 25-40 in space during offline play on a i5-4670k, 650ti and 8gb ram.

Is this typical? Looking online the general response I found was "maybe ur hardware just sucks :^)" or "its an alpha(which is understandable somewhat in this case)". Only reason I'm concerned is because if my game starts shitting the bed on FPS near larger vanilla pre-made ships, I'm not sure I could play online.

>>
>>123504260
Space Engineers has two main flaws:

1. Physics glitches due to bad coding
2. Low running speed due to worse coding

The glitches feed into the already low speed, so multiple glitches happening simultaneously can occasionally even crash games. Multiplayer is even worse, since it basically amplifies the number of glitches happening, and crashes far more frequently than singleplayer.

If Keen managed to improve the multiplayer situation, I would be playing it regularly.
The last time I played it was when my heating was off.

No, in a jet engine the injectors are after the compressor. And if the fuel burns at that point (which it should) it won't cause a problem, since you want it to turn the turbine behind yet.

If the fuel burns in a supercharger due to the compression, it can blow the supercharger.

It's not a matter of difficulty, but usefulness.
While a skilled pilot might win you a battle, solid designs will win you the campaign.
Instead of flying your own show, you should zoom around the battlefield in freecam, noting how your vessels perform against their opponents.
This knowledge can be applied to build new designs and improve upon existing ones.
Then there's the issue of how a human only can control one vehicle, whereas the AI can handle several.

fuel efficiency decreases as you use more of the engine's total energy capacity
turbochargers do nothing right now

pls story tiem
>>
>>123515978
Good start. Direct crankshaft drive yet?
>>
>>123515978
So is there a cooling element to it then? Because if there isn't that's annoying. Would also make heat decoys more effective since they'll be relatively hotter compared to a well cooled engine.

So I'm building a Helicarrier/prydwen(fuck bos)/hoverbase for spengies survival. I'm thinking along the lines of something you'd park in an area to give yourself a bit of a presence, then build a base beneath it, and eventually scrap it or use it to expand to another place. What do you guys think I should slap on it?

I've got the bare minimal right now, it can fly and that's it. Nothing in it so far. It's got a huge flight deck on top, and I was thinking of making a hangar beneath that. MG's and rockets to keep it save, but beyond that I have no idea what to put into her.

Help pls

What are you doing for fuel? I want to do something similar, but looking at the numbers on the wiki, it sounded like hovering (say) 1000 tons for any good amount of time would take an absurd amount of uranium/ice.

>>
>>123519034
>I used solar and batteries for my hover platform
What's the mass of that thing? And how many solars did you use?

Here's my math:
Large atmo thrust: 4,500 kN = 4.5e6 N
Force of gravity on 1000 tons (1e6 kg): 9.81e6 N
Number of large atmos needed: 9.81e6 N / 4.5e6 N = 2.18
Large atmo power consumption: 16,360 kW = 16.36e6 W
Total power consumption: 35.7e6 W
Solar panel production: 0.12e6 W (at 100% exposure)
Number of solar panels needed: 35.7e6 / 0.12e6 = 298

300 solars seems like a lot, especially considering they only produce power half the day.

Has anyone tried building an orbital solar station, with some little shuttles packed with batteries flying up and down on autopilot?

>>123520293
Grav gen + artificial mass (a.k.a "gravity drive") is a pretty good way to accelerate in space. Grav gens don't work on planets though (anywhere with natural gravity >= 0.5g).
>>
>>123519926
For steering, make sure you're
A: Not dragging wheels sideways across the ground. That breaks them now.
B: Not rotating things into each other. If you have a part that rotates, assume it'll rotate 360 with no warning and provide clearance.

For flying machines, you basically need to get the mod that resets angles when you let go of the button. Otherwise it's nearly impossible to return to neutral.
Alternatively, you can lighter-than-air everything and tether it down to a heavy car or something mobile.

Big explosive missiles can be good but they're kinda wasting their payload imo. A huge frag one shoots an outrageous amount of shot into the enemy ship, and with a low cone it will pierce just about any armor. And frag ones resist anti missile better because they explode and fire the frag AT the target which can do damage. And big explosive missiles blow up their friends really good too.

Keep in mind I'm kinda trash but I build lots of bombers and missile boats.

>>
How to make jets start out of water smoothly? I can't handle it.
>>
>>123551065
AP isn't determined by barrel length though? it's just combination of shell and velocity afaik. Throw a sabot round in there and you can get a ton of AP without a very long barrel.
>>
>>123551786
Shell velocity is dependent on how much gunpowder you use though, which doesn't have any additional effect unless you have a long enough barrel to burn all your powder. I'm convinced that getting to 10 AP without using sabot pieces, railgun bits, or more powder than you can burn with 12m of barrel or so is impossible for 203mm shells. Even if it is possible, I still probably can't fit some HE filler and a pen depth fuse in, which is my true end goal.

Is this supposed to be a battleship-only thing?

>Is this supposed to be a battleship-only thing?
Anon, do you not understand that a 203mm cannon is fuckhuge?
Several nations had naval cannons of that diameter during WW2 (Germany, Japan and UK among others), and in all cases they were mounted on heavy cruisers.
Incidentally, most of said guns had a barrel length of 10m or greater.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20_cm/50_3rd_Year_Type_naval_gun
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BL_8_inch_Mk_VIII_naval_gun
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20.3_cm_SK_C/34_naval_gun

That being said, I don't think large-diameter AP rounds work very well in FtD.
Given that both AP value and kinetic damage scale with velocity, it's far simpler to make a rapid-fire 18mm cannon with shells consisting of gunpowder and a single kinetic head.
With such a setup, one can easily achieve mach10 rounds for a 1m rack, making the cannon a poor man's laser.

IEEE 64-bit floats have more than twice as many mantissa bits as 32-bit ones. So I'm pretty sure that does actually give it (more than) twice as much precision.

I doubt it matters all that much for Space Engineers, though. It might reduce clang a little (not sure) but it wouldn't make the speed cap magically disappear.

If using standard floats for precision were a problem, ships would judder on attempting to move. They don't, so doubles aren't needed.

Far as I am aware it would be a physics update rate problem like this anon >>123561930 said. If the update rate isn't high enough, and speeds high enough, things could just pass through each other and never collide.

doubles probably wouldn't effect clang.

>>
>>123566720
That would require a huge rewrite of the engine

Took the Space Citizen guys months (or years?) to get it working somewhat
>>
>>123566816
That's their problem not mine, if you want to design a space game you have to take into consideration the actual vastness of space

That way, if a player blasts off at warp speed, don't simulate anything just make it look as if they're moving and calculate the distance they would have traveled upon deactivation, then spawn the area that they "arrive" in. Not that hard. Basically, space is literally non-existant until a player shows up there.

Yeah I know, just saying that, considering their past incompetence, this is never going to happen
>>
>>123566945
>if you want to design a space game you have to take into consideration the actual vastness of space

Except a game in 'space' does not need to deal with the vastness of space by default. Space Engineers is a good scale and works with what it needs to. I'd rather them focus on getting Medieval Engineers combined than to do nothing but make my jump drive work more.
>>
>>123567119
dedgaem before it ever finishes then if it doesn't have actual space. Speed of light wouldn't even be enough, you'd need factors of 10 at least to get anywhere.
>>
>>123566945
Hopefully that'll make the cut during optimisation. There's little reason to simulate every little thing thousands of miles away from any players, aside from number-crunching refineries and assemblers left alone to do their thing.
Then again, that would greatly limit the ability to put together extreme-long-range projectile bombardments and the like. As mediocre as Mass Effect 2 was, that bit of dialogue from the Drill Sergeant at the entrance to the Citadel is something worth bearing in mind here, I think.
>>
>>123566250
I don't see why they don't just remove the speedcap. Shit will get clangy if you go too fast, but you should have the option to do so in a fucking space game.

Increased speed sadly means increased CLANG, which leads to potentially increased server load and server-related issues. Last thing we need right now, honestly.
>>
>>123567387
Even projectiles can be optimized like that

Make a simulation range around the player
Then when the projectile leaves that, show only its model until the player can no longer see it, then completely unload that projectile but keep calculating where it's going, where it should be so that if someone shows up where that projectile should be at that time, it becomes loaded again.

Then once it reaches the vision range of another player or an area where a player has built, it is loaded back into the game with model and all.
>>
>>123568062
So projectiles wouldn't exist as a thing only as numbers unless observable, nice.

Got any suggestions how to do that? Because I think doing this lookup efficiently would require some particularly fancy data structures.

Obviously you could just keep a giant list, but that requires a linear scan every time a player flies more than the simulation radius. Then somebody fires off a million bullets from their machine gun, and those lookup times go completely to hell.

A 5.56x45mm flies at about 900m/s
Ceres, the largest body in the asteroid belt has a surface gravity of 0.28m/s^2. The mean radius of Ceres is 473km.
Ignoring that gravity decreases with distance, the bullet would have to get within 3000km of Ceres in order to achieve a stable orbit.
If we're going full realism, the rifle bullet will practically be flying forever, until it hits the sun or a gas giant.

In SE-world, it's better to not change their rather limited range.

Yeah but after a certain range enough is fucking enough, they're not going to hit anything and even if they will, what fucking harm will they do after having traveled LIGHT YEARS to reach their goal?

That depends.

I've not worked on a physics engine no, but I have worked with game engines. In Unity specifically, there is an option to select differing modes for either doing per frame collision or dynamic collision.

which, the Unity engine dynamic collisions are pretty bad. They can be made to work as there are games that have it, but phasing through impacts is a possibility.

>>
>>123566127
I've worked on my own physics engine and worked with finished engines like Box2D or Havok and yes they check for intersection every frame in general. Obviously they have lot's of optimizations and after the collision it starts to handle it a little differently. But for initial collision detection, engine checks intersections every frame. However there are algorithms for continuous collision detection but they are resource expensive, usually used in games in few specific scenarios and KEEN isn't capable of implementing something like that correctly.

SE should create local physical environments for ships like KSP, use continuous collisions when high speed impact might occur, slow down time in game instead of ticks per second when server is overloaded, unite ships into one physical entity when connectors/landing-gears/locked pistons/locked rotors are used instead of bugged point-to-point Havok constrains, and everything would be perfect, without CLANG or speed limit. But we can only dream.

You need a strong single core CPU (4GHz++) and about 4 to 6 GB RAM for the hosting alone. If you do P2P, you will have to be able to support your own game on top of that, so 16GB RAM at the VERY least, with an overclocked 4.5GHZ++ CPU. When I open up an empty world with 3 to 4 people and someone fires their ship guns, I instantly drop simulation speed like a motherfucker. And I am not even hosting a game world per se.

If you want to play p2p with some buddies, stay away from planets. Set autosave to 15 minutes, tops. Go for low density on asteroids.

Your problem. Before Freejew decided to listen to the little shits who could only play SMGbed effectively, you could still go fast, plasma was the fucking shit, aerial battles were actual fun, and shitters got shat on.

Then everything was nerfed except for SMGs and Mech legs, because the whiny children were the most vocal about it. There has been some major pushback against developer actions recently, including the idea that "redundancy" needs to be solved by allowing none of your functional parts to be shot off in combat, and allowing the overall health total of your bot to be derived from the cubes that make it up. This would have catered to the shitters (again), but after this idea was put forth, the robocraft forums exploded with people saying they were just going to abandon ship if that went through. Devs actually listened to reason for once and scrapped it.

Don't get me wrong, the game is shit. It's just better shit if you had joined up earlier.
