Hello new /shmupg/ thread!

https://www.mediafire.com/?48812jiax8m1c
This is the link to download all those shmup games and stuff I think. I haven't tried it yet but I remember someone last thread saying that it should be posted in the OP of the next thread. it's not the OP but first post isn't bad I think.

We should get a cool reco list for various platforms, especially Steam. There are some real fun gems out there. I really like Jamestown a whole helluva lot.
>>
Noob here
When do you play for 1cc, and when for score? Should you go for score after managing 1cc, or what?
>>
>>123308608
I consider them separate goals. You can go for a 1cc first, but if you want to start scoring later you're most likely going to have to relearn everything anyway.
>>
>>123308608
That depends on what you want to do. If you feel like learning to play for score, I'd suggest learning that first, as otherwise you may have to unlearn your earlier survival strats.
>>
>>123309157
>>123309802
What do you mean? How does playing for score differ?

I'm playing Parodius Nonsense Fantasy atm, if that can serve as an example
>>
>>123310174
To score effectively you need to be intimately familiar with the game.
>>
>>123308608
If you are new to STGs i would definitely try survival first to hone your skillset, getting that first 1cc is a gr8 feel
>>
>>123310174
Scoring can involve more aggressive and involved playstyle as opposed to trying to diminish the danger you're in to no miss.

Ultimately I wouldn't worry about it unless you really, REALLY enjoy a game and want to learn how to get a high score,
>>
>>123308608

I play for both, honestly.

Did anyone get the torrent on kickass for Mushihimesama? Microsoft Security Essentials keeps detecting the crack as Dynamer!ac. Anyone know if it's real or a false positive? The guy isn't an official uploader so that's why I'm asking.

Also, before someone crucifies me, I already bought the game. The thing is I am on vacation away from my main computer, and Steam doesn't want to run on my secondary computer.
>>
>>123308608
I play for survival most of the time but knowing how to score can often help in the form of power ups or more lives so I pick up enough about scoring on the way to help my run

there hasnt really been a game Ive been good enough at to really go straight for a scoring run

Mushihimesama patch just in time for my daily credits.

V1.1.3.0
>Changed the V1.5 BGM to better quality version
>Addition of the My Rank feature to Leaderboard
>Displaying score over rank 100
>Removal of the monthly score option
>Local ranking data and stage highsocre have been added to the save
>Today's score is reset every time the game is stopped.
>Pressing button B (or X on keyboard) change to the local ranking display.
>Correction for glitches happening sometimes during Training mode
>Correction to the graphic glitches happening on Arrange Stage 4
>Correction to the startup process to prevent crash happening on some machines
>Correction to the crash happening when showing friend ranking
>>
>>123369986
Let's talk about how there's nothing to talk about. Shmups are exciting to play but there's little to say about them in general and that you have to constantly necro and hamhandedly introduce inane topics of discussion just proves it.

Apparantly there is a bug where the game will crash due to a sound related bug (probably only on windows 8, I had a similar issue for two other games that just crashed on w8 due to something sound related but they work fine on other version of windows including 10)
Other than that it seems to be fine and the devs are looking to fix the crash bug aswell.

Ikaruga is a glorified puzzle game disguised as a shmup. I wouldn't recommend it.
>>
>>123391935

>>
>>123424167
I love this meme.
>>
>>123424287
I can kind of see it. You match 3 colors in Ikaruga and a lot of puzzle games involve matching up 3 colors. It's still a shmup because you're shooting them to match them but there are puzzle elements. Saying it's a puzzle game is hyperbole.
>>
>>123425000
Finding the optimal scoring path in every shmup makes them a puzzle game
>>
Treasure shmup players: tee-ball.
YGW shmup players: home run derby.
>>
>>123425268
Only if your scoring system is as mind-numbingly predictable and boring as Ikaruga's.

>enemy floats in
>shoot in the order we want you to
>enemies you can't kill float away, lest you get punished
>RSG/Ikaruga scoring in a nutshell

Might as well go solve a Rubik's cube, would be far more fun than a credit of Ikaruga.
>>
>>123425457
Thanks memexak

>>123425719
Ikaruga is anything but predictable, the opposite in fact. Every encounter requires precision that can't be predicted, while other shmups scoring can be broken down into general statements like 'point blank', 'chain' or 'use specific shot when x'.

if you ever played a decent bullet hell you would know that there is level design (when they're not cave tlbs). I'm looking for a doujin shmup that took forever to be released, had stuff like a version 0.5 and 0.7 happen in comikets, and released 1.0 like 3-4 years ago.
To get patches you needed to go on their website and punch in part of the score on the back cover of the game box.
I have no idea what it is, but I need it in my life again.
I don't think I ever found the patches beyond 1.0 either, no one leaked them.

Because they've had 9 years to come out with a version 1.55 or whatever, but didn't. Even when the 360 port came out, they left it as is. If they make changes now, on one platform that accounts for a fraction of their userbase, it will be completely irrelevant to any serious players because the standard is always set by the arcades.

What are /shmupg/'s opinions on touhou?
>>
>>123580128
different, not all bad, brought the genre to the masses
though the shmup players who exclusively play touhou are pretty much human trash beyond what you'd expect of a shmup player
>>
>>123580128
It's a shmup that 95% of its fanbase doesn't actually play
>>
>>123580128
I have a lot of respect for Touhou. It's what got me into the genre in the first place. so I'm quite happy to have been touched by it. There's some good music, and I like the way boss patterns work (mostly those from the older games though). Having said that, I find the stage design to be very lacking. There's never any flow to the stages, every part can much too easily be divided in sections. There's always a gap between the action which ends up being terribly grating to me after a while. Seriously, just fucking hit me with everything you've got and don't pad out the game-time.

Also, the Japanese fanbase is great because of everything they've created, and everything that they continue to create. But the western fanbase is just obnoxious and is mostly just regurgitating anything the Japs have made.
>>
>>123580298
This tbqhwyf
>>
>>123580515
This is a good thing in my book for so many shmups all there is is the game itself. That's fucking sad if you think about it and how most games (non-shmup) have at least secondary material surrounding them.
>>
>>123580128
I love them, so far I've been almost exclusively playing touhou because I like to spend a lot of effort into one game to push that one to the limit and the controls just feel much more responsive and give you more control than in any other shmup I tried (especially that there is no delay for changing your speed as ther often is in cave games and there are 2 different speeds that are perfectly fit to deal with anything).
I also like the very complex scoring that can be optimized beyond human capacities. I do try out other shmups every now and then, but usually not for long because as I said I like to focus on one thing.
>>123580298
>though the shmup players who exclusively play touhou are pretty much human trash beyond what you'd expect of a shmup player

>>123584013
Not the person you responded to but the people that play Touhou games exclusively, usually have an air of arrogance and conceitedness to them.

Especially the high-level players seem to act especially audacious. Weirdly enough, I find this posture to be more absent in people that have played non-Touhou shmups at high-level.
>>

I don't think anyone would watch my stream because I only play shmups for an hour or two max.
>>
I know it's a long shot, but did anyone here save KetGareLabs's videos before they were deleted?
>>
So my games aren't working right.

I watch videos and awesome ensues, the player dodges millions of bullets at high speeds and with much precision.

Whenever I play the game, tough, nothing like that happens, sloppy movements and bullets hit the ship and it explodes.

More exposure to shoot em ups seems to be fixing it though, it appears that the console and pc learn from their mistakes and now the ship dodges at higher speeds in much more agile ways, but it is still not enough.

I should totally purchase more shmups, it seems to be fixing the problem.

Well, it helped me I suppose.

Most streamers there only play 1-2 hours at a time, or even less than that. STGs aren't really the kind of game you can grind for hours and hours on end while still maintaining a high level of focus.

Should I buy Mushihimesama or BoI: Afterbirth on this sale?

Whichever one I don't buy now I'll probably buy during the Christmas sale. Mushi is probably the better deal but I can actually run Afterbirth on my laptop so I'll probably play it more.

I know this isn't the best place to ask but I don't trust the shitters on the rest of this site to have actually played Mushi.

Mushi is newer, so I don't know if it will go -30% off again soon. Afterbirth has been cheaper, but only if you pre-ordered it. I'd say go with Mushi, Afterbirth is only 10% off right now.

If you think you beat a shmup by credit feeding through it, you really must be new to the genre.

That's how they are in arcades, sure. Are you playing it in an arcade? If you really want that ~authentic~ experience you can go ahead, and I wish you luck, but honestly it doesn't matter a lick. I'm under the impression that a lot of high-level players just play with whatever's comfortable.

Some of the top scores on Mushi XBL leaderboards aren't clears. In fact the highest ranking Ultra runs that actually the game end up with around 25% of the top scores.

I believe it's something that's subject to variation though. Mushi leaderboards prioritize score over everything else, but if I recall correctly stuff like Arcadia ranks scores by stage first, so a lower scoring run that actually finishes the game ranks higher than a run that scores 10 times better but game overs in stage 5.

What's the difference between normal, arrange and 1.5?
Also, what's the difference between ships?
>>
>>123721945
Arrange mode is basically Maniac, but you start at max power with more options than you get in normal and with a higher counter. 1.5 there are more enemies that shoot faster, and it has different, usually better, methods of scoring.

M is kind of the jack-of-all shot, doesn't particularly excel in anything.
W moves slowly but has the widest shot, and if you point blank it does the most damage.
S moves the quickest and does the most damage at a distance, but not as much as point-blanked W.

That's why I said "if you not AT LEAST 1cc them".
Score always has priority of course, but this doesn't mean that 1ccing them is always easier than reaching a good score, but rather that reaching a good score is even better than "just" 1ccing them.

However, even though they might have a very good score, they still didn't beat the game when they didn't 1cc it.

Suguri - super fast, but straightforward shooting game. The sequel is even better, but not on Steam. Has two fighting game spinoffs.

Kamui
RefleX
Alltynex 2nd - Trilogy of very solid shooting games, each of them has different gameplay, but a connected plot. A damn good one as well.

CCWI - Stars everywhere. Double Break is pretty glorious, that alone makes it worth playing.

Diadra Empty - Fantasy Zone on crack. Steam version is kind of iffy though.

I don't know the reason for it but some of the games do that if you launch them with the stick plugged in. Launch the game and THEN plug in your stick. I think that's the fix. If you use Joy2Key, you'll have to launch the game, plug in your stick, and then launch Joy2Key, I think.

Learn to increase the hit counter. There are many enemies worth a lot of counter like the big bugs at stage 1, the trees at stage 2 etc, but the easiest way just do it only at mid-bosses.

It's mostly about exploiting the way the chain counter works. On large enemies and midbosses you have to build up your laser counters then cash them in to your main counter by rapid tapping C. If you do it well you can raise the counter over 100k on midbosses, then you just have to maintain that high counter for the rest of the stage. Stage 3 is a little more complicated because there are large targets everywhere, and you have to delay killing them to avoid dropping your chain, while also using these tapping techniques. You also have to use W power most of the time because the other shots don't have anywhere near as much scoring potential. I see really high level players switching to S power for the first half of stage 5, but you have to suicide at the midboss to switch back to W power.

Very cool, has some nice physics and mechanics (usually involving your manipulator and the gunpods it can acquire and use). Feels pretty cinematic both for a shmup and for a game of its time. It kinda helps that the game isn't terribly difficult in many places.

Is the 8-way on a digital arcade stick viable to play higher level on some of these recent shmups? In the sense that top-down shooters are related to shmups, I guess, but if we're including stuff that are related to shmups but not quite shmups themselves then we'll also be talking about Contra, or House of the Dead.

Ultimately, Nuclear Throne draws more from roguelikes. It has the procedural generation, the permanent death, leveling system (though not as strongly as older roguelikes like Nethack). If you really want to talk about Nuclear Throne, I honestly believe you'll have better luck in the roguelikes thread.

It's awesome, with very cool aesthetics, and music. Also probably the most innovative schmup I have played in a while.

Only things I dislike about it is, that it's too easy to play for survival. Should have dropped the energy shield and made it a bit less frantic instead.

It also looks retarded how the ship constantly flies sidewards, especially in the second stage. Feels a bit like a rail shooter sometimes. Plus it's dumb that you don't have a seperate button for your homing missiles. It looks and feels even more retarded when you want to shoot stuff in the background, and constantly shoot with your normal shot to the side although there isn't even any enemy.

It's not even a good CAVE shmup. Ketsui, DOJ, DFK, even Dawn-patch is more fun than it. Should've skipped it and went straight to Futari if they had to pander to the 2hu-minded people who only play for "cute" characters.
>>

futari is a legitimately great game though

>>
>>124100896
Mushi was a good way to test the waters.
>>
>>124101136
If they wanted to test the waters they should've gone with one of Yagawa's shmups like Muchi Muchi Pork or Ibara, which are more casual-friendly than Ikeda's shmups.
>>
>>124102902
Ibara is literally the most unfriendliest shmup ever made. I'm sure casuals would really be into killing themselves and keeping their spare lives under 2 every few minutes just to be able to clear the game.
>>
>>124103723
You're exaggerating a bit, that sort of rank control only happens when you're playing at a high level for score. When played casually Ibara can be a fun experience where rank flows naturally and you don't need to suicide.
>>
How do I dodge Gorgoneion's laser pattern?
>>124100835
People should make more of the loving charts.
>>
>>124103952
Rank starts to get high as soon as you get 3 lives, and then there's more stuff you have to do for rank control like avoiding power ups, and let's not forget other things about the game in general, the bland color pallette, hard to see bullets, random patterns and RNG. When people get into shmups it's usually through Touhou, DDP (MAME) or Futari (easiest and usually peoples' first Cave clear).
>>
>>124103952
Not him but I've seen the stg weekly for ibara and that game has extremely convulated systems that's unintuitive, unlike mushihimesama.
It would be a bad intro to beginners.
>>
>>124104331
In Original, there's not a lot to it aside from streaming back and forth, killing a bunch of turrets on the way, and reacting to the lasers and getting used to their collision which expires a little before than the visual disappears entirely. The laser spawns seem pretty random at times, so there isn't much you can do aside from practicing.
>>
>>124105636

>>124105636

>>
>>124110037
they hired the battle garegga guy who didn't do anything but ibara and pink sweets though "same company" doesn't mean much in this case
>>
>>124109437
There isn't a comparison, read the reply chain, someone said a Yagawa title would have been a better choice for release than a Ikeda game, which simply isn't true, Ibara is also Cave's worst selling title, the boards are cheap to acquire and you can never find it in arcades because of how unpopular it is.
>>
>>124110662
There definitely was a comparison there, I was just reaffirming one side's opinion about it
Either way, it has a special place in my heart for some reason, I don't even want to like it but it just draws me in.
>>
>>124110129
He also did Muchi Muchi Pork (quite possibly Cave's easiest shump and a good intro for beginners to 1-ALL), and Daifukkatsu BL.
>>

The thing is, there's no reason to pander to the casual audience now that arcades are dead and people play videogames on consoles. Devs can pull any crazy shit combo they can imagine since you don't need coins anymore to play and have easy access to replays/training stage.

How fighting games became a thing again? Because twitch. We don't need watered-down games to make a genre popular, but marketing and shilling. A charismatic twitch streamer that's good enough at shmups will bring more players to the genre than easy games. STG doesn't have any good streamer, just a bunch of awkward weeb virgins that plays Touhou.

I think there are a couple of decent ones that can actually talk. Popular shmups on Steam that get thrown in bundles also sometimes randomly get played by popular variety streamers - I don't see STGs being revived even if a stream or video gets a few thousand views. There was a DOJ 1-ALL on a GDQ bonus stream to 10k+ viewers, I don't see any revival in STGs resulting from that.

Additionally, there's that multi-million view video of the Mushi Ultra TLB, many online review holes covering Mushihimesama, a hundred thousand CCWI copies thrown around in bundles, and so on. I don't think lack of exposure is keeping STGs niche - players don't seem to be picking them up and keeping at it, even if they catch a glimpse or end up trying one out by accident.
>>

not a single post about the actual games
>>
>>124165253
So just like here then
>>
Danmaku games are no shoot em ups. They should get called dodge em ups instead.

Shooting skills are completely irrelevant in these games. It's all just about squeezing your mini hitbox through boring bullet patterns.

my genre is better than yours tbqh
>>
>>124166427
Great, then make your own thread about them, but stop dragging real shooters into your cesspool
>>
>>124166854
yeah, let's split this dead general up because you're mad that other subgenres are more popular than yours
>>
>>124134264
so basically meme = shit
>>
>>124165865
>implying shooting games have never been about dodging bullets
>shooting skills
So pressing buttons is a skill now?
>>
>>124166921
Oh now it's just sub-genre again huh. I dont give a shit about popularity. I just don't like to get associated with kusoge
>>
>>124165865
Danmaku games are about enemy management, so yes, shooting is important. If you fail at enemy management you won't be able to dodge the ensuing clusterfuck of bullets.
>>
>>124167029
In real shooters you need good aiming, positioning and the right tactic to destroy your enemies.
In danmaku you don't need anything of this. You just need to dodge bullet patterns. Hitting enemies is easy as fuck in these games.

>I have never played danmaku before
>>
>>124167231
>good aiming, positioning
position yourself directly under enemy, or however your shot type spreads out, wow so hard

>the right tactic to destroy your enemies
shoot them until they die, much skill

>In danmaku you don't need anything of this. You just need to dodge bullet patterns. Hitting enemies is easy as fuck in these games.
literally the fucking same as your "real shooters" you retard, stop being autistic, they apply to both games.
>>
>>124167231
That only partially applies to 2hu games because they're 90% boss fights
>>
>>124167167
The so called "enemy management" in these games takes no skill at all. The only thing which takes skill is dodging the bullets correctly so that you have the right positioning to hit enemies.

That's something totally different from real shooters where you also need precision and timing to hit enemies.
>>
>>124167379
i would hardly call stupid little girls "bosses"...
>>
>>124167330
You obviously never played an stg in your life.
>>
>>124167379
unlike most other shooting games, bosses are actually not that easy to hit in touhou though (and it's more like 50/50 for stages and bosses)
>>124167527
hahahah epic meme dude
>>
>>124167379
It also applies to every other danmaku games, especially cave style games.
>>
>>124167586
sorry but little girls cant be bosses.

daifukkatsu barely got around the issue by making them big and even then i only consider those half-bosses
>>
>>124167586
touhou is 90% bosses because the sections that arent bosses are so bad they might as well not be in the game

like the dudes made 50 games he still doesnt know how to design a stage layout that doesnt come at you in short waves like galaga
>>
>>124167645
why exactly can't they be bosses? a puppy or a carrot could be a boss as long as they're spectacles and are more challenging than the standard enemies
>>
>>124167712
the reason there are pauses in touhou stages is because of pocs, if you try to poc all items, as you should there is a lot less downtime
>>
>>124167305
>I have never played an STG which actually requires shooting precision and timing before
>>
>>124167740
a dog can easily be a boss, look at gunbird2

touhou girls, heh, sorry, impossible.
>>
>>124167992
*unsheathes katana*
>>
>>124167905
Try playing Donpachi for score, then quit at 1-1 because you can't handle the precision and timing
>>
>>124168213
>shot which spreads over 90% of the screen
>big as fuck enemies
>precision and timing
LMAO
>>
I like the thread activity, although its for all the wrong reasons.
>>
>>124169492
>playing for score means killing everything in sight and dropping your chains at 10-12 hits
>>
>>124167569
Don't be autistic, they are literally the same for both games, you aren't special.
>>
>>124165195
>>124165351
Blind, stupid, or low-effort trolling? I can't decide.

So that's two trolls now. We're moving on up in the world!

Soon the ships will be piloted by elemental dolls.
>>
>>124171732
It's not the same at all. In games like R_Type for example, enemies and cores are mch harder to hit. They are smaller and move faster to the point where they often become more dangerous than their bullets.

Plus, they also can hide behind environmental hazards. They can fuk you over and storm at you when you don't shoot them in the right moment. Plus you also have to think about how to use your force pod to kill them.

This actually requires some though input. In danmaku you just need to dodge and thats it.
