In terms of optimal army composition?

The difference between planes and artillery on the offensive is fairly minimal, while the difference between planes and artillery on the defensive is immense. This and the addition of recon further makes planes the absolute best back line unit once all techs are unlocked.

In comparison, the difference between front line units are fairly trivial: the difference between an irregular (not shown) and a tank on the offensive is all of 18 points. If you're bleeding money from planes, the front like is where you can skimp on cash - throw one tank in for siege and shove whatever you want in for the rest.

Maneuver is also pretty useless by this point in the game - the combat width is down to about 10 (3 in mountains) so unless the enemy's already lost the battle (down to less than 10 units) everyone has someone to shoot at.

Guards are in HPM a straight upgrade to infantry, so it seemed better to put the top units up. The front line isn't really relevant as anything but a meat shield by this point.

It's more specialised for the offensive than, say, 4 guard/1 tank/5 planes, and if you're specialising to the tune of a couple extra points for a specific task, go the whole way and throw 4 artillery in to replace the planes.

Playing CK2

I just realized that I have about 5 women who all have been imprisoned for 30 years in my dungeons.

One of them is especially worrying, in the absence of light and education she has grown "kind"
She not even all that mad at me for being in prison all these years either
She's been in the dungeons since she's 11, her father, a bishop from up north, sent her down to some counts court at the coast
When that power hungry idiot foolishly rebelled against my grandfather she was captured during a siege, and has been in prison ever since
Not then and not now does anyone show any interest in ransoming here, not even for a sum as insignificant as 10 shekels

Even setting her free seems kind of cruel after all this time. Her dad and his liege have been dead for about 15 years now

You already know this but, IA changes for:
+ Free cities in the HRE
+ Controlling all HRE provinces
+ Having many princes (>25) in the HRE
+ Internal peace in the HRE
- Heretic princes in the HRE
- HRE provinces not in the HRE

You're ticking like 0,10 IA a month when you start. If there's internal peace in the HRE it's around 0,20. You also get 1-10 IA from:

+ Adding provinces to the empire (1-2)
+ Keeping the crown in your country (10 each time)
+ Completing missions to improve relations with electors (5)

So, keep the HRE shattered and keep your princes catholic. Control all HRE provinces and add new ones.

How I did it there wasn't very elegant. I just blobbed like mad into the Balkans, France and Anatolia, waiting for Hungary/Bohemia PU and Burgundy event. Even if you don't give much fucks about the HRE you still get IA. Only when the prince count starts dipping below 32 or so should you interfere and release some. You don't get IA for releasing princes anymore, so it doesn't matter since you get all the territory in the end anyway.

I'd blob, get steady IA and do missions whenever available for IA. I'd be at 25-35, and then the King would die for +10 IA and I'd pass a reform by adding a few provinces.

2-4 reforms in the reformation will start. It fucks you over. You CANNOT dip low on manpower or the protestant league can backstab you and ruin your game. Play safe, have big allies. You NEED to win the league war or it's over. You also can't start it so it's a waiting game. Never triggered for me and in 1618 catholicism diplomatically became the official religion.

After that convert princes with religious CBs and enforce religion. Wait for ticks, add provinces. Ewiger landfriede and you've won.

Also: a general rule of thumb I always had for myself was to be at least three reforms in before the reformation kicks in. It gets harder to pass reforms after that because you're stuck with heretic princes eating at your IA and it hurts your IA gain. A lot.

I passed reforms 4 and 5 pretty much just by waiting for a king to die, hoping I was at 15-20, and adding 30 provinces.

Plus, you can get some very pretty borders with Japan.
