Any .ini tweak suggestions? I'm mostly concerned about fatigue and the air game.

Fatigue is not that much of a problem if you are willing to invest the time in acquiring and training enough troops.

The Air Game, however, can be way too punishing and unfair especially if this your first time with it. Those who started in previous Betas at least have a degree of knowledge of what to expect but for someone new it can be a campaign breaking aspect even on the lower difficulties.

If you don't want to try the Air Game Mod, at least lower the repair times or/and activate the Second Wave option "Friendly Skies" for a more manageable experience.

So what's the best research path?
Xenobio->fragments->beam->adv. beam->??

>>
>>123070179
Would you really have ready access to Super Robot soldiers when you're really little more than a small resistance force?
>>
>>123070187
I've been told repeatedly that focusing on defense in the Early game is a mistake. Enemies get stronger as you go on, so bigger guns faster is your best bet, then you'll have enough resources to plop down serious armor in the midgame.

Unless someone disagrees and makes a better argument than I just did.
>>
>>123070728
just wondering because MECs gave me a constant chub and I hate to see them go
>>
>>123070850
Earlygame armor tech doesn't lead to poor tactical game because jesus look up the alloy shiv stats and tell me they won't trivialize every mission you bring one to.

The problem is the airgame.
>>
>>123070187
drop xenobio to the end of that list and you might be getting somewhere
>>
>>123070973
You're leaving scientist requests for later so you can get laser before the first terror mission?
>>
>>123071140
lasers make low-level troops less shit due to accuracy bonus. you want requests immediately after that, though, because around the same time you'll probably have someone competent enough to play a shock jockey
>>
>>123070869
Very likely that they'll be available in some form later through R&D. Not necessarily in "huge robo-suit" form, though.
>>
>>123070957
>because jesus look up the alloy shiv stats
If you play normal, yeah.
If you play impossible, alloy shiv will be out for half a month at least after 2 floater shots or 3 sectoid shots.
Not to mention you won't have enough alloys to spend it on something as useless as shiv.
>>
>>123070973
Not getting xenobio in March means that your entire R&D will be late for at least half a month. Compared to getting it immediately.

Yes, even 1-2 extra scientists in first months save you A LOT of time.
>>
>>123072020
Researching bio->adv beam is faster than going straight for adv beam and skipping bio. It does let you get beam faster than if you do bio->beam, but not by that much and it is a subjective tradeoff of strategic for tactical advantage.
>>
>>123073936
But you don't even need beam without adv. beam too early, starting guns are enough for first three months. Main point of getting lasers quickly is to build laser cannons.
>>
>>123074156
The extra damage and accuracy is a big help too, especially against mech units.

Anyone wanna talk about pic related?

Its pretty good, and challenging enough to be fun.

I cant touch XCOM anymore before 2 rolls out so its been a nice way to blow off some TBT-steam.
>>
>>123074156
Yeah, which was why I was wondering why that guy is delaying xenobio, the only thing it would speed up is beam rifles/carbines and only by three or four days.

Gameplay: It uses the XCOM2012 cover system, and unlike games like Shadowrun, it remembers to incorporate the important part of stepping out of cover to shoot. This makes the flanking-focused gameplay satisfying. But even if the game is focused on flanking, you can still whittle enemies down through cover due to the luck-system that I can't remember ever seeing in a TBT.
The game is fairly challenging, with player characters and enemies dying in 1-2 shots.
What makes it stand on its own legs is the surprisingly wide array of weapons and usable equipment, alongside the ability system that uses poker cards. These cards give stats and new abilities to use, and arranging them to poker hands is rewarded with powerful upgrades. A straight means health regen, or a 5 of a kind (joker card + 4) is +2 damage.

Its not all combat however. The story is told in 8 distinct 1-3hour scenarios that neatly tie up into each other. You do different things in this world map which reward or punish (or both) you depending on your choices. Robbing a grave might give you a great rifle but also curse you.

Setting: the wild west theme mixed with supernatural is in my opinion a very good thing. It makes the game stand out and makes the story interesting. Fighting demons with a revolver is quite fun.

So in conclusion its a solid title, which surprised me a lot. I expected it to be generic and shallow, especially since it seemingly jumped out of nowhere to my sight. I'll heartily recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to play any more XCOM but could do with some TBT action.

>>
>>123080621
The anon above answered about being "good", I'll just add that Hard West is much more a puzzle game than a tactical game (like Valkyria Chronicles).

You have to fight battles, but they are mostly prearranged, and your starting conditions for each battle are mostly prearranges as well. So once you figure out the approaches to each battle, and get an understanding of combat mechanics, it becomes easy. Also, due to all that, it offers very little replayability.

That's what you're suppposed to do. Vanilla strategy is building workshops and sats as fast as you humanly can while researching weapons tech, then when you have the whole world covered and all the tech you want researched, only then do you start capturing shit and advancing the plot.

idiotic and counter intuitive, reason i kept failing.

at least learned from it. How are MECs by the way? I am pretty far in and doing fine with my squad although casualty here or there, nothing that is super bad. Haven't used a mec yet figuring ayy woukd just focus fire on it and shit. Plus not sure what troop to amputate.
>>
>>
>>123187026
MECs are pretty swell. No matter what, they bring utility, cover destruction, crowd control, etc.

They are plenty tanky enough to survive if you aren't instantly wiping out contacts.

They do cost alot of meld tho
>>
>>123187357
Do they need any will? Playan with all second wave options available from begining except save cum. I suppose the dont need will that much but I fear if they panic and decide do go friendly fire then. Although defenders medal should fix that.

What do you suggest anon?
>>
>>123187836
IIRC their will gets rerolled in vanilla when they become MECs. So if anything, you should take those with low will.

Why would you play with all second wave options if its your first playthrough? Many of them make the game harder.

Second wave options are mostly garbage imo, you really should only turn them on for subsequent playthroughs.

Ok its about time I ask.

How do I git gud at this?

I cant beat a LW campaign, always falls apart somewhere around Disks and mechtoids showing up, on normal.

I can't beat a Xenonauts campaign, always falls apart because no money for interceptor force and the high tier Aliens showing up despite my gear, so I lose my best troops faster than they can be trained up.

I just BARELY beat a Classic Ironman game in EW vanilla for the steam achievement, after 6 tries.

Usually it comes down to there being too many aliens in a mission in LW, and they just beat me with attrition since they dont have to worry about making bad moves or taking bad shots like I do. I dont even know what im doing wrong honestly, should I try that second wave thing that reduces the number of ayys per mission?

Thanks in advance.
>>
>>123192368
If tactical gameplay is fucking you on LW we could try and baby you through a tough mission. Got any saves just before a tough as shit mission?

>>
>>123191051

>>
>>123192368
Motion trackers are incredibly useful to avoid activating multiple pods of aliens at the same time. You'll want to take a gunner and some smoke on every mission when cyberdiscs and mechtoids start showing up so you can suppress them for a while or up your defense if you can't kill them in one turn. Cyberdiscs in particular usually do nothing but overwatch when suppressed.

Pay attention to the map description in the loadout. Most roadways are linear and without much flanking opportunities so you might want 2 snipers and lots of smoke. Urban maps are more likely to have lots of destructible cover so bring some rockets or sapper engineers.

I wouldn't recommend Quick and Dirty because I think it isn't balanced for the amount of corpses and weapon fragments you need. You DO want to turn on Durability because item repair is retarded.

are you serious, my first game was Classic, with 0 casualties

Classic isn't hard if you know what the game is gonna throw at you next

only Impossible is actually difficult and only because there's too many pods on too-small maps so you always get double/triple activations. it's still distinctly manageable. get good motherfucker

and even if I did have it, it sounds like LW basically makes the same changes Impossible does that make Impossible not fun by being overtly unfair like a shitty mario romhack (too many ayys to shoot per turn leading to guaranteed deaths for you, ayys having way too much health for the weapons you start with while your soldiers being made of paper maché, all your guys having 55 Aim to the ayys' average of 80 or 90, etc)
>>
>>123230203
actually no

i find with small ini tweaks (air game ini tweaks only for me) LW introduces a breath of fresh air, new mechanics and depth to xcom. Especially moreso if classic vanilla is too easy and boring for you.

That's how I started my long war and I never looked back.

I was in the same boat of "classic easy, impossible ridiculous" for vanilla, and LW adds a ton of variety while being generally fair except for the air game, but even that's manageable without ini edits

I especially love early game in long war, since you can go flashbangs on everyone to neuter sectoids/thin mints and just rush up for point-blank 100% hit flank shots without a care in the world. All the while spamming motion tracker to know what you're getting into

I've never even played vanilla EW, it was easily worth it for long war alone.

The best comparison I can make is that vanilla impossible feels like a puzzle, while LW I/I feels more like a fight. As for the alien health, yeah it's higher, but it climbs in increments as the aliens improve their research. There are also several abilities that increase damage output significantly.

The problem of impossible is that every mistake is punished by a dead soldier (for a very flexible definition of "mistake"). This forces a very rigid playstyle, which is kinda interesting but since you have no tools beyond grenades and since every deviation is punished by loss it can get quite repetitive.

LW gives you a shitload of tools from the start, gives everyone more survivability so random oneshot deaths are no longer anywhere close to a guarantee, and forces you to train your entire roster so the one random oneshot death you will take every fifth mission isn't debilitating.
>>
>bring a squaddie sniper along to train him up
>every other soldier gets missed at least occasionally
>but the sniper can't help but eat a crit every time I leave him anywhere he can even be targeted
He also can't make any shots either. Are some characters just actually cursed in-game and doomed to be useless forever? This happened with my last game, too, I got a sniper as a reward for a mission and he never made a single shot the entire time I used him and would die really, really easily.

>>123305563
it's a lot more flexible than newcom. newcom is more like a tactics-themed puzzle game, like WarBears. oldcom is just as lethal, but a lot more freeform because of how cover works out and the ability to fire freely on stuff. also the ability to stick and move instead of ending a unit's turn whenever they fire makes it a lot more flanking dependent/cover shoot-y. proper tactics like bounding and flanking actually work, unlike newcom where it's more of a puzzle to see what combination of moves will overwhelm the enemy because anything that isn't that one solution will end in a loss
>>
>>123305563
That's cuz it is so comfy. Its also the perfect size and pace to watch streams on side of you screen and play on the other

>>123304804
>>123305092
You don't need it, but its convenient for things like
>who should carry this rocket launcher
>who might not die when I send them through this UFO
>who will immediately panic when things go wrong so I can stick them in the front so they will die first instead
Just a matter of convenience so you don't have to dig through the individual soldier pages if you care enough.
>>

>>
>>123306126
>who will immediately panic when things go wrong
everyone, it's not worth managing

honestly, panic isn't so bad in oldcom because you have so many more dudes to throw around. it's only really bad when you have then armed with a rocket or small launcher and they wipe your squad on turn two because they got spooked by a disc. and there's combat stims to pump low morale soldiers full of so they stop bitching

>you don't have to dig through the individual soldier pages
iirc XComUtil fixes this by publishing soldier stats at the skyranger loadout screen so you can know who's got what skills when it's actually time to arm them instead of having to use statstrings or keep notes

>>123305967
One of the things I always liked about the older X-Com games was that because you deployed squads of 10-14 an individual loss didn't tend to screw the mission/campaign in the same way that losing a soldier does in the newer games. Heck, you can have a guy cause a panic chain and lose 6-7 guys but can still complete the mission; going down from 14 to 6 is manageble, but going down from 6 to 3 (in the newer games) is a lot less so.

The alleged freeformness of old X-Com is really just a facade, most of your actions will take a percentage of your TU, so you still end up shooting twice per round at best. The only noticeable thing was that heavy plasma was bonkers so it could autofire twice and still have some TU for a snapshot.
>>
>>123352594
That's my first month in north America, I just spent a load of cash on the planes and guns. I thought waiting a month longer to get more planes was worth saving Mexico so I don't lose the air bonus. I started in France
>>
>>123360164

Because of the fact that movement and crouching are flat costs, it provides you space to maneuver in and out of lines of fire while taking shots. That's where you get advantages out of TU's, over the 2 move system. I don't think the 2 move system has removed so much from the game, however. There's still interesting decisions to be made. It'd just be better with more than 4 soldiers.

Ayy I'm hitting alien biocybernetics soon and I was wondering what mecs to build first. I was thinking a pathfinder, valkyrie and a marauder. Usually people wait for tier two mecs due to the frailty of mec1s. If you still want to get mecs right away, make it a class focused on killing from relative safety since tanking is going to be difficult.

Vanilla isn't balanced, it's meant to be played once to experience the story and then tossed aside. Opportunist squadsight snipers with nothing else on them trivialized EU. The EW shit like secondary heart and mimetic just gave you even more broken shit, but it's barely even worth it since they can't make you invincible when you already are before them.

>just a facade
You have way, way more things you can do with your TUs than just shoot aliens. You can do hot potato grenade relays; you can scorched earth the entire block; you can perform actual fireteam maneuvers with that many people, and so forth.

Plus, the free-formness extends to the strategy layer to. You can set up active patrols to improve radar coverage - since Interceptors and Skyrangers have their own radar radius they can pick up UFOs in areas your radars cannot reach. You can examine UFO sighting trends and witness reports to try and guess which target the aliens are focusing on that month and structure your patrols accordingly. You can set up multiple bases. You can try to intercept a much tougher UFO with multiple interceptors simultaneously (it's possible to disrupt terror missions early this way), or tail a UFO until it lands then deploy a Skyranger to assault it while grounded.

I mean granted, there's some of the options are flattened due to how rudimentary the enemy AI is, but the game attempts more of a freeform simulation rather than an abstracted puzzle.
>>
>>123382680
>You can do hot potato grenade relays
That was a rather stupid mechanic, though. I'm glad OpenXCOM have the "grenades primed for 0 explode immediately" option.

>you can scorched earth the entire block
This is shooting, which is TU-%.
You wanted to talk about freeaim, but it's a thing not related to TUs.

>you can perform actual fireteam maneuvers with that many people
It is no different than in newCOM. Even better, I'd say that newCOM with Aiming Angles option offers better fireteam maneuvering possibilities than oldCOM.

>You can set up active patrols to improve radar coverage
...and it's completely pointless in standard oldCOM and is useful only with certain mods that add special planes with good radar.

>You can examine UFO sighting trends and witness reports to try and guess which target the aliens are focusing on that month and structure your patrols accordingly.
Doesn't matter much, oldCOM UFOs ofter appear half the world away from their target and then move there (and then move half the world away before leaving Earth). In other words, discovering a UFO in region X does not mean at all that region X is being targeted.

>You can set up multiple bases.
Yes, but it is mostly needed to work around radar restrictions (covered in newCOM by sats) and logistic restrictions (covered in newCOM by using a centralized model).

>You can try to intercept a much tougher UFO with multiple interceptors simultaneously (it's possible to disrupt terror missions early this way)
There's still a sharp boundary in UFO strength, meaning that there's usually literally 1 UFO class that you can take down with this maneuver (smaller classes are fine with 1v1, larger classes will destroy all interceptors anyway).

Though in general I do agree that freeform approach to strategic layer in oldCOM made it more interesting than extremely schematic linear approach of newCOM.

at the end of my first game, I don't think I ever made a single interception that wasn't with Avalanches or EMPs, I had lasers for that short a time and completely skipped plasma/fusion
>>
>you can get fusion weapons for interceptors
>fusion cores are used in the blaster launcher
>but there's no fusion tier of normal weaponry and fusion cores aren't used for anything else
does this strike anyone else as strange? I feel like they were gonna go for it, given the alloy cannon's coloration and how sensible it would have been to have a plasma bloom shotgun, but then axed the tier for some reason

I got this guy from a muton captive request, and he's got great stats for a sniper/infantry. Trouble is that I have enough snipers and infantry right now, and I don't think I'd use him much until I mec my overwatch builds. I'm thinking of making him a really accurate gunner with RFA + Opportunist + Sentinel after seeing someone have great success with a similar build.
>>
>>123405142
No I don't think so. I think that the fusion lance is a callback to ufo eu's fusion ball launcher. That and the blaster launcher.
>>
Playing Long War and I'm curious if it's normal to lose the default starting ayylien country and another one that's in that continent. Basically the ayys are trying to conquer continent by continent? Also when should I have advanced lasers online? This feels lame as fuck using ballistics when everyone is starting to become 6 hp+
>>
>>123406432
If the aliens get high enough resources, and don't consider XCOM a serious threat they can launch a mission just like they had in the first month and instantly take a country. It's called an infiltration mission and they're performed by the overseer UFO or battleships. Adv. lasers should be done ASAP for the laser cannons, keeping your airgame as strong as possible is extremely important.
>>
are shivs ever worth it or are they just a comedy option to replace a useful soldier slot with a kawaii little mascot bot
>>
>>123406432
Yeah you should rush laser tech, not only for the ground but also so you have a chance in the air.

The ayys usually just target the highest-panic country around, and since their main panic tool, terror missions, raises panic across entire continents, it tends to cause continents to fall together.

The situation I have right now is that China was the first to fall and Japan has hit max red panic but there's a sat over Japan. If I understand correctly there's a 50% chance of Japan not leaving now and Asia is worth still fighting for?
>>
>>123408042
do long things trigger u
>>
>>123408513
It depends on your goals right now. Asia has a very strong bonus when there is max satellite coverage, but it's going to be a while before you can retake China. You should really at least make a token effort to keep Asia out of alien hands, but don't overcommit and weaken your air defenses over your other countries.

Gauss, pulse, and plasma research all available in October. Either I've make a horrible mistake, or it's time to gloriously skip from lasers to plasma, vanilla style

Plasma is very expensive to build, and you should research pulse for supercaps anyway.

I've got over 600 elerium, just short on carbines. Haven't felt like I needed gauss for anything yet, only in the last month have I started to feel the lack vs heavy floater packs. I bring chem grenades, and RF+HEAT gunners religiously, so the DR pen vs mech wouldn't do much.

Is it the L-shaped highway map? There's a strictly enforced no-fly-zone somewhere around the broken fuel tank thing nearer to the edge.

Main reason I build gauss is because of the extra ammo and cool sound. That 600 elerium will get cut in half practically from the research costs though. The weapons themselves aren't too bad.

Wat do.

>have chem grenades, normal and shredder rockets, and alien grenades

Best plan I can formulate is to position my rocketeer at the big door at the front of the cockpit and steady him, hope they dont move, activate next turn and hope the berserkers cluster, chem them, shredder rocket them, alien grenade them, then hope my assault, infantry and gunner can finish them off. As for the mutons I'll probably just have to weather the storm.

In OpenXcom terror missions, is bringing nothing but rocket launchers and leveling the map an advisable strategy?

Oddly enough, yes. Civilian deaths don't have a huge point cost and it doesn't differentiate between friendly fire and actual ayy terrorism.

The main problem with the strategy is bringing enough rockets.

Are you supposed to mess around with variables in mods by yourself?
I have installed the LW and LW Mod Manager, everything works fine. I took a look at Long War- Customize the Air Game mod and I am not sure if I am supposed to manually change the variables (of which I know nothing of) in the text file. Same question goes for a few other mods from the recommended list.
2nd question - is there a list of mods that make LW less frustrating (besides using the suggested Cinematic Mode Second Wave)?

It's manual all the way baby, the documentation in the ini is pretty good anyway. I recommend using notepad ++ or similar for the sake of your sanity. As for the frustration, you can tick the second wave options that remove EXALT (they get stupidly powerful later,) or reduce the number of ayys on average (make sure you modfiy the amount of weapon fragments dropped.)

Being shot through walls. Since floaters can fly, they sometimes get really dicky angles where you can't return fire. Since the landed scouts always seem to be fucking clown cars with 20 aliens, that's a lot of opportunity to get fucked if you are taking cover in the UFO.
>>
>>123567512
So I have to slog trough UFOpedia to see what variable does what, edit the txt file and load it in Mod Manager? That sounds awfully lot as work. Not to mention some of this requires hex editing.
How's the game without LW?

That's something that has always happened since EU. I distinctly remember one time in the a gas station map were the floater stayed just at the right height at the side of the gas pump roof and it was able to shoot with full impunity for several turns till the MEC finally got below it (by sheer luck) to finish it off. It was specially annoying because no-one else could aim at it even when the MEC has his sights on it.

Back then it was not that much of a problem as the patrol numbers were quite low so they never bothered to fix it but now, with those clown cars, it really became a thing.

Camp the highground as much as possible, bring smoke (lots because of all the low cover) rockets, grenades, and heat ammo. The two cyberdiscs are the hardest part I feel. The first one shows up in the first room, being a floating asshole. And the second one shows up activated, aware and mobile behind you when you get to the end of the second room and touch the wall next to the holo door. Drop in enemies will be massive pussies and a pain in the ass to hunt down, so a sniper may be helpful.

there's references to a researchable "plasma blade" in the game files at certain spots, so there probably was originally going to be a melee option that wasn't the Arc Thrower.

They probably took it out because guaranteed useful damage was probably not deemed "THATS XCOM HAHA" enough.

>>
I miss the days when smoke broke LOS, did stun damage, and if you weren't content with smoking ayys out by hotboxing the planet, you could just beat the shit out of them with a baton.

though arresting ayys is more fun in the new one, it's great to slowly advance on a muton whose AI doesn't know what to do so it just freaks out and does nothing (assuming it's not already genuinely panicked)

is it just me or is XCOM vastly inferior to oldcom in terms of depth/tactics, but somehow much sillier than the originals for whatever reason? I feel like newcom is horribly rigid in any kind of stand-up firefight and every engagement goes the same, but once you get any modicum of control over the situation, Yakkety Sax may as well start playing.

So I finally fired up Long War. There were a dozen ayy's on the first mission. So I went back and turned on Quick and Dirty. There was a warning about setting the number of fragments in the ini file. My first question is how can I do that (or is it even needed so I don't get hampered later in the game).
The second question concerns the fatigue and injury time which is ridiculous (especially for fatigue). I already set the RAND_DAYS_INJURED_TANK to 25% for fatigue but what about injury (since there are two variables)? What are recommended values?
Third question regarding the repair and rearming of airplanes - what values should I change. I already have Air War mod installed but I am not sure if it addresses this.
The third question is the issue I've been having with the Cleanse of the Clones mod, namely that whenever I install it (through LW Mod Manager) my squad turns bald (male and female). I am trying to avoid messing with the ini here if possible.

You already did that. It's called research. You did the research and were given the complete plans on how to manufacture it. Given enough resources you could mass manufacture that alien doohicky. You certainly wouldn't need 7 days to mount it.
Are you actually defending the ridiculous amount of time needed to mount a weapon on an air frame?

>the hardpoints designed by shen in 2010 or whenever probably don't work for the beam tech prototyped in 2016
Why not? The weapons are mounted externally, with their own power/ammo sources, like any other gun or rocket pod. If anything, they're less complex than conventional weapons since they're just gun/rocket pods and not high-speed high-accuracy missiles that have to interface with the avionics. They're just dumbfire weapons that can be zeroed/slaved to the main cannon's 'sights'.
>>
>>123603087
>You already did that. It's called research.
yes, and I'm telling you one month of research is not enough to design anything close to a weapon system

militaries do not design iteration #136 of normal ballistic assault rifle in a month

You want a fully functioning laser cannon that never randomly assplodes, taking the plane with it, and is easy to maintain? Start an R&D program that will take ten years. And a separate one for the laser sniper, and another one for the shotgun. You want a prototype that can fire a beam but not much else? Maybe we can jury-rig something in a month.

I had assumed they're a bit more than that since they're very capable against UFOs. If the council is just leasing you two of their 10000 F-15s why are UFOs even a problem?
>>
>>123604329
So you have a problem with the research times then, not the arming time.

Becayse everything made by xcom is on mint condition and reliable from a gameplay perspective.
>>
>>123604329
Yes in real life the research would take months or years. In real life you also wouldn't strap a cobbled up, ghetto version of an alien weapon to a hypersonic platform meant to engage in combat with said aliens. And you know what? In real life it would also take 3 to 4 hours to mount the damn thing, not 7 days. An aircraft carrier can support over 200 sorties daily, while those schmucks in X-Com can't tighten a few bolts on a couple of planes in their underground base.
As someone said those times are just a trolling tactic by the LW authors.
>>
>>123604694
No, I'm fine with both the research times being on the order of weeks and the rearm time being long. I think of it as very barebones projects creating equipment that is more custom than assembly line. If it's not exploding randomly that's a necessary sacrifice for gameplay.

Rally cars and high-end guitars are "custom" as well, that doesn't mean it takes a week to replace a turbo intake or magnetic pickup.

>>123605093
>In real life you also wouldn't strap a cobbled up, ghetto version of an alien weapon to a hypersonic platform meant to engage in combat with said aliens
actually in real life they took an AC-130 and put a chemical laser in place of its howitzer. Apparently, it was about as difficult to mount the laser as it is to remove and replace the howitzer to service it, and the major problem was finding a spot for the big tanks of chemicals to power the laser. And it was more "the crew can't move comfortably" than "the plane can't fly with this stuff onboard." So even then, you'd think that once you found a place to put the new stuff, it'd be as easy as getting a few non-unionized workers to haul it in.

Yeah but that was a tested and familiar tech. They have trouble cramming all of the crap needed for the new generation of lasers on ships.
That anon had a point with research. It should take far longer to come up with something usable based on alien tech. And the starting missions should be meat grinders where X-Com wins only through superior numbers.
>>
>>123606458
>Yeah but that was a tested and familiar tech.
ok buddy just go buy a howitzer-shaped laser off of eBay right now

they had guys design and build it to certain specifications because they didn't want to have a bigass chemical laser built and then have to spend extra R&D time to fit it to the plane, they just had those design constraints from the start to avoid that shit

standardized fittings/sizes/protocols were and remain a massive leap in technological advancement, and even in modern times it's a big jump when a new standard gets agreed upon (as long as it's a decent standard and not a false compromise (24-bit banking protocols lmao)

>And the starting missions should be meat grinders where X-Com wins only through superior numbers.
for some reason they wanted to go the opposite route and have small, elite squads winning through tactics. probably because, as anyone who has played oldcom can tell you, managing 10 guys and 5 tanks with limited screenspace and a samey tileset gets a little confusing

Nigga ATL was built from the ground up to be able to fit on in the AC-130. And the development is ongoing since 1996.

>managing 10 guys and 5 tanks with limited screenspace and a samey tileset gets a little confusing
It was just some talk about realism, not a jab at the game design.
>>
>>123608627
>Nigga ATL was built from the ground up to be able to fit on in the AC-130.
Kinda my point.

Much like XCom's laser/plasma/metal storm/EMP weapons would be built from the ground up to be able to fit on the Generic Interceptor, and the later Firestorm would probably be built with the existing Generic Interceptor weapons in mind.

So taking a week to fit a gun pod that shoots lasers instead of bullets is absolutely insane when real-life crews take just a couple of hours to fit new rocket pods to a Sea Harrier after it dropped its last bunch in the ocean so it could land properly.

This actually worked out to being really fun and interesting, if not optimal. I can only shoot to kill on exposed/flanked targets because her aim is so low, but she has ITZ and Squadsight so she can just chain kill shots like nothing... But she's useless in a firefight otherwise. She's got high will, though, so her psi stuff basically never misses, but she needs to be in LOS to use it.

A terrible soldier in objective terms, but an absolute blast to play with.

I think it would have been interesting if everyone worked like this. and all weapons had the "can't shoot AND move" mechanic, but other abilities (like suppression) still worked as half-actions. It'd make firefights way more interesting and positioning/flanking based, and psi would actually be as dangerous and battle-tide-turning as the canon makes it out to be.

Meh. Mindfray does shit damage and is more useful for the aim/will penalties, and mind control is neat but it's usually easier to just kill everything around you.

Psi really is just okay. It's nice to have and gives you some more options when you can't one turn wipe everything, but it's not nearly as dangerous as the game makes it out to be.

You can just abandon them, it just lets the aliens build another base you can raid later for lots of goodies. All you really need to do is hold onto countries as long as possible, and plan on raiding bases sometime in the winter.

>>123631004
I know a lot of people seem to think sprinting towards a strong air game is the best route but how feasable would rushing base assaults be?
the lack of air game would lead to more countries lost and small doses of resources lost from UFO splashes but you could take countries back in the assaults and gain substantial resources as well.
or would you gain more resources from the UFOs?
I don't give a fuck about losing nations as long as I can earn them back at some point
>>
>>123632785
The problem is that if you don't invest in airgame, then the ayys will probably wipe out your sats over your home continent, cutting your funding and now you don't have a continent bonus.

Losing countries also boost alien resources and research. All these things together probably makes base rushing pretty difficult.

Maybe there is a way to make it work, but I don't see it.
>>
>>123632467

I think it'd be possible; as long as you still grab adv lasers for troop weapons, and a few laser cannons for sat hunters.

Even without rushing airgame research, you could probably start NA and run extra interceptors to try to keep panic down by throwing money at the problem.

Maybe something like rush captures, interrogate mint and research lasers, then research base assaults while building laser gear and stocking up on outsiders.

Okay, this is starting to get ridiculous
How do you keep up with it
Am i like supposed to keep extra interceptors on empty continents?
>>
>>123649804
Yes you absolutely are.
>>
>>123649804
That's one route, and it is a very painful route because any extra income you get from the sats will get lapped up by the interceptor upkeep. To make up for it you won't take much panic and you'll earn a tidy bonus in materials though.

Personally I prefer to spam satellites and engage conservatively. The ayys only launch 2-3 scout missions and like one hunter mission, no matter how many sats you have up, so as long as you have enough interceptors to handle most of those you can survive without spending all your income on new planes. Obviously this does end in one-two lost sats along the way and some more panic and less materials.

This is a temporary phase and your goal isn't to win massively, just prevent them from getting as many bases as you can before you unlock the tech that lets you start winning.
>>
>>123650325
So erm....what tech is that?
Firestorms?
>>
>>123650478
aim boosters, supercapacitors, interceptor health, its a gradual climb

Speaking of the bases I was thinking of unlocking base assaults because that is the point where you can start undoing the ayy progress, although it isn't exactly air tech.
