If you have a 4 tile scatter, there's a 33% chance it'll scatter to 8 tiles. It'll tell you more in the tooltip for the launcher itself in your loadout menu.

I learned this the hard way when I had the exact same thing happen. It's very unlikely that they would select their own tile to fire upon, but it's possible.

The only way I've been able to beat gangplank in LW has been to turtle like Hell in the first room. Then after clearing most of the contact, push up into the main area and clear the remaining contact. After that I take out the first power conduit and begin moving forward. It's fairly straightforward after the beginning except for the bullshit cyber disc that spawns behind you in the room with the three towers.

It effectively increases damage. Shotguns have a dr penalty against robotic units. Breaching ammo removes this penalty so that they damage robotic units like normal ones.

Rocketeers, it's the inverse. They're because Exponentially stronger with the last few tiers of perks. Overwatch infantry fall off because of inbuilt defense, but crit infantry stay stronger.

SO! My birthday's early December and I decided to spend my funbucks on the PS3 copy of Enemy Within because I hear it has less glitches and because my PC is super fucking old (I can't replace it just yet)

So I figure getting to play Enemy Within at all is good set-up/tide over for the sequel I'll hopefully be able to play next year.

What I'm hoping for is some advice, videos I should watch, anything a brand new player to the franchise should know.

If you have any questions while playing, just ask.

For the most part though, always get engineers, rush satellites (and pair them with a couple interceptors), abuse explosives, focus on weapons research, when building your base focus on adjacency bonuses.

Until your more experienced never yellow move your troop, and try to keep everyone bunched up so you don't activate (aliens only aggro once you see them) more pods. Cover is king, but don't use half cover, you always want high cover (the full shield/+40 defense) if you can.

There is plenty of other things to figure out and learn, but if you keep those in mind you shouldn't get screwed in the strategic game, and the other tips just keep in mind for the tactical part.

If you want to watch some actual xcom gameplay (similar to yours) go watch beaglerush's youtube, not twitch (but watch that too anyway, just don't apply everything you see there).

He has an iron man impossible campaign that should teach you alot.

Only if the soldier takes a reaction shot. If nothing shows up then no ammo is spent. There is a multiplicitive penalty to reaction fire of 70%, so keep that in mind. That penalty is squared if the target is dashing I think.

Take those six squaddies you got from the first mission(you did get them each a kill, right?), and use them.

One assault rifle for a bit of long range picking.

You can do fine with just about any loadout, but your problem comes with that six man outsider pod. It becomes a DPT race, and that is where a squad full of shotguns will save your ass.

Very good perks for a support imo. Lightening reflexes + the usual smoke gave him utility in the middle of firefights.

Good aim plus 3 perks that work with overwatch made him great opening contacts and cleaning up small ayys that broke los.

The positive point is she was literally a trick shooter; Annie Oakley status.

Concerning ccs, with that with level of aim, if someone activates ccs she still hits it for like a 75% chance or something. However, sometimes she just wouldn't feel like it, so even less reliable then standard ccs (something to do with a sniper rifle's coding i'm sure, never established a clear pattern.

You can also control non-VIP civilians in those missions.

They're entirely useless and will never be targeted unless you move them, and have negative defense so they aren't even useful for trying to ruin overwatches, but if you click them you can select them and make them do stuff even though they don't cycle with Tab or by having moves left after everyone else spent theirs. How do you decide what class is best for the random stat rookies? I get low mobility high aim is good for snipers and infantry, but I'm not sure who should be a medic or engineer etc.

Medics in long war have access to abilities that boos their will by a lot and have a naturally high will growth. Officers are best as gunners or infrantry. Someone who tends to stay in the middle of the pack as you move across the map.

For me, I had built medics into two things.
1) Psi-god in training. A bit worthless early on, since they don't take anything like paramedic or suppression. Once psi hits though, aliens get mindstomped to hell and back.
2) Support medics. Suppression, paramedic, that sort of thing. Stays relevant throughout the entire campaign, since their perks will never go out of use. They still make real good psi guys as well, due to medics having a high will progression. I built mine as an overwatch suppression machine, and I haven't regretted it at all.

Medics gain a little bit more will than the other classes and have access to combat drugs. If you go for a smoke grenade build you can smoke yourself for extra will and use mindfray/psi panic in the same turn.

Another thing you can do with them if they have decent aim is take paramedic and savior with the overwatch perks and make them an officer.

I generally make medics, infantry, rocketeers, and gunners into officers. Scouts, assaults, and engineers are more often classes I want Command to be used on. Snipers are generally too far from the squad to do much good.

The only thing I find it's good for are drones and seekers, and you can't grenade them half the time anyway because they're flying. I take ranger on my sapper engineers. You can give them an arc rifle to disable the bigger mecs instead of grenading them and take mayhem (arc rifle is a sniper rifle) to make it a viable weapon outside of disabling.

Not much info really.

I think the only things pretty much confirmed is more customization for you soldiers, especially considering you can export characters from you campaign to be available online. Technically, even that is not "confirmed" yet.

As far as type of matches, I think they are still deathmatches without any other objectives, though little has been said.

I hope multiplayer is just as moddable as singleplayer so we can get some fun gametypes.

Mostly ID fixes. Some armor kits have the weapon ID wrong, so, for instance, if you have a soldier with smg equipped, you will NOT get a proper armor kit deco on him (evident because no shoulderpads with default armor deco).

That pastebin fixes all that. You don't need it if you're not a fan of default armor deco, but you might find it useful otherwise.

Bradford: Bradford is living as a crazy mountain man/hermit and seems to be permanently paranoid that ADVENT have found him. He drinks a lot. At the end of the book he realises that the resistance finally seem to have some momentum so he puts down his bottle, picks up his shotgun and heads out the door to go save the world.

Lily: Shens daughter is portrayed as a bit of a super genius autist. She doesn't interact well with people, is only interested in tech to the deteriment of people around her and becomes totally focussed on stuff when she works on it.

Tygan: Did not appear in this story aside of " we got a guy called tygan to be chief science scientist"

ADVENT: They don't speak any human language when they talk to each other. Their weapons and armour self destruct when they die, they look like a cross between human and and sectoid (not the swoletoid) when they have their helmets off

Aliens: Apart from statues in the cities the aliens almost never appear in public. They abduct thousands of humans every year but it gets blamed on the resistance. ADVENT are their public face entirely

Contagion Zones: I don't think these have been mentioned anywhere outside this book so far. Huge tracts of land are marked as off limits by the aliens. Humans living outside these zones in non alien built cities are tolerated but treated like crap, humans found in the zones are killed on sight. At the start of the book the resistance had the belief that these are for secret alien stuff they don't want people stumbling upon. But the aliens are actually legit scared of them. The squad in the book observe ADVENT burning things in these zones on a couple of occasions, and they make a point to comment that flamethrowers aren't their usual equipment. They encounter weird animals that look like they are covered in glass. The book deliberately doesn't go into much detail about what is going on. It really spooks the squad when they encounter it and they gtfo pretty fast. It is Really weird and seems to spread to everything living like crazy.

THE COMMANDER: Is spoken of as a figure of legend, nobody has any idea what happened too him, Shen seems to have a theory but it is never properly discussed.

Snipers *were* 4x as useful until jaegers got their ITZ at SPEC. Now it's exactly the opposite: jaegers are 4x as useful compared to snipers, they wreck everything starting at CPL sniper -> SPEC jaeger, while poor sniper have to make it to MSGT to be really strong.

Of course you won't ditch snipers completely, they still have their uses (one is "being cheap"). But nowadays jaegers are literally the best ITZ class.

Now, if you're scrub playing LW Normal, you won't even *need* damage. So sure, you can do just fine with itz scouts.

I'm playing I+I. I'm not "rushing" MECs, merely building them at earliest convenient opportunity. Which usually means around late summer. August or occasionally late June.

My R&D order is "beams, armor, Experimental Warfare, then getting to the MECs with some small tangents like an autopsy or two, then air game immediately afterwards". Works for me since B14, I didn't even adjusted it much for B15.
I don't go gauss until Muton interrogation, seems too wasteful and I'm not prepared to produce it en masse anyway.

Oh yes, MEC-1s are more of a liability than an asset. You definitely can't do anything special with them that you can't with plain meatbags. However, early MECs serve their role so that you can train people in obscure MEC ways before really tough aliens start appearing on every mission.

However, once you get to tier 3 MECs, they simply wreck everything standing in their way. Some classes start doing that at tier 2 and a proper rank.

Honestly, all the Aim bonuses in the world don't stop making it bullshit that they simply have more dudes than you. You may have killed like 30 ayys per mission in oldcom, but you could also bring 12 with you right from the start, the maps were bigger and ayys didn't have significantly better aim than you if you managed to keep an A-team. It was also more about positioning and managing firefights than newcom just because of the sheer volume of fire a guy could put out.

in newcom, if you have 4 guys and there's 5 aliens, it doesn't matter what difficulty you're on. one of your guys is going to die no matter what because you just don't have enough fire to lay down. And considering everything in the early game gets better aim than their late-game equivalents because of the weapon progression, it's just straight-up unfair unfun bullshit until you get a bigger squad size and the ayys stop using light plasma and 100% accurate poison spit.

Thin mints should have been the lategame big bad enemy instead of etherials, they're way more interesting and more threatening tbqh

Plenty of people her play ogcom and will help you out. And ufopedia has all the basic info you need for unintuitive mechanics and other tips as well. Just note ufopedia is based on the original xcom and not open xcom, so there will be some slight differences (not enough to matter.

It's easier to not give as much a shit with openxcom/oldcom because soldiers are so replaceable, and it's not a huge blow to your force for a mission to lose a guy or two. That's only really in newcom, where an early loss is literally a quarter of your team wiped off the radar. And honestly, a guy that dies in oldcom had it coming. in EW, everyone's stats are largely the same without Second Wave changes, so everyone is valuable. in oldcom, someone that dies is probably someone that only started with 1HP and was a useless shit anyway. Likewise for someone missing a shot and dying for it on the next ayy turn. Chances are he would have gone on to be a useless shit who can't hit a barn from the inside if he'd lived anyway. Lives are just so much cheaper in the old game and it's much more easygoing for it, without sacrificing tension since you still do have a mission to complete and only so many guys to throw into the grinder.

And seriously, starting with 8 guys with innate squadsight and ayy grenade power HE packs to crash a UFO with no survivors is a way more gentle start to the game than taking 4 retarded invalids to an abduction with like 20 sectoids.

Also, while LE BREAK LE LOS :^) is a big ol' meme for newcom, oldcom doesn't have cover mechanics so it really is about hiding behind stuff and abusing the ability to fire on tiles instead of characters Ayys generally won't ever shoot at something they can't see, but you're free to postion a high-aim dude on a roof somewhere with a basic laser rifle and demolish everything. Maybe a heavy laser if you're cheeky. You can also be a cunt and do stuff like uncover a guy, then go back and let him be "out of sight" but fire on the tile he was on anyway. You might hit him. You can also do things like fire at tiles behind people, directly target explosive objects, etc. It's a much more freeform tactical game and is a lot less frustrating for it.

Not really. The more i play, the more i find its my fault or just sheer bad luck. Even the best soldier you have can lose a duel and health hardly matters until you get armor since everything is really high damage + the huge modifier rolls (0-200%). The lowest health rookies could survive a heavy plasma, where a vet in flying armor could instantly die.


On a seperate note bravery is one of the most underrated stats ino simply because chain panics are the only real way to sqaudwipe when you have 14 soldiers per mission. Of course hopefully you never screw up that hard, but well placed nades or psi bs can ruin anyone's day.

nope. that's newcom play to a tee. oldcom you see an ayy, you try to laser it down and then keep enough TUs to move back into cover, keeping a couple people in reserve to reaction fire at it if it decides to move up. or use explosives straight off because bodies/loot don't get destroyed straight away.

And then you go on to describe your own personnel way of doing things which is just a slight variation, but still revolves around having multiple soldier ready to handle the situation and use explosives if needed, but also includes an unreliable mechanic like reaction fire. Literally just your own personal preference vs. my personal preference. There no reason to break LOS if the alien is dead and my squad is covered in smoke 24/7 regardless. We are literally having a "disagreement" over nothing.

Nothing, they just get itchy trigger tentacle which gives them a chance of firing on reveal. Really it's not that hard to counter, just control your activations like normal and use mecs/biotanks when you make a push just in case it hits.
