/indie/ is a proposed general for all indie games in general, such as LISA, Yume Nikki, OFF, Bastion, Machinearium, Braid, Limbo, Axion Verge, Guacamele, etc.
>Can I talk about (game)?
"/indie/ is a home for all things indie games. But if there's a general for an indie game already, you're probably better off discussing that game there. Similar to /smtg/ and /pg/. Persona is a sub-series of SMT, but Persona outgrew SMT. Now they just have their own generals.
This place is hopefully a home for the indie game community and indie games that don't have a home."

And one more thing. I posted this on the previous thread but I had no replies but since I'm very insistent I want to try discussing this again.
Can we talk about mobile games and browser based games here, if they are considered indie? And maybe have a mobile and browser pastebin? I know /vg/ has a /mobile/, but it's almost non existant, and I think there's a lot of good games in both categories that could be discussed here like pic related.
>>122990574
Well, there are many good mobile and browser games so i think we should allow them. But most of them are short and not much to talk about, though.
nth for a thread executed with impunity.
Any love for Epic Battle Fantasy? It doesn't get that much "indie cred" because of its "Newground-ness" I suppose, but IV got a Steam release semi-recently and it's a great series. Basically JRPG combat done right by someone who plays and loves JRPGs, with lots of workable status effects, customizable equipment and skills, interesting enemies and strong bosses. Not much story beyond outdated Gaia-tier anime humor, but the combat is superb. Also the game really knows how to make attacks feel and look satisfying. Soundtrack is good too.

it really isn't about yiffers at all, just about genetic modifications. i fucking hate furries with every single fiber of my being, but I still love the game. I get why some people won't like the game if they're socially conservative. Although you can be all like "fuck gays, robots, and trannies" if you want in the game, it'll just suck. And you would make Turing sad, which is evil.

It's a masterpiece. Almost every line is so perfect, the quantity of everything is so perfect, the fact that everything is a joke and there's so much of everything is so perfect. It's not bad, it may be too esoteric for you. The glyphs are a reference to an Atari game, Captain Blood, and they are not very important but they can be useful in some situations such as knowing when a bird is about to attack and knowing when to eat.
>>123009723
It's literally just the sound and I clearly enjoy the rest of the game enough for it not to be "too esoteric for [me]". The glyphs are cool it's just that the sound kills me.
>>123010063
well you can kind of glitch out the sounds by clicking outside the window and back in, experimenting with saving and loading, etc.

>>123018309
One of them is, at least. the other's a boss.
>>123017895
The new DLC is pretty okay. I will say the new boss, Hush, is a bullet hell piece of shit. It's not as much of a game changer as wrath of the lamb was to the original BoI, but afterbirth can be pretty fun - ESPECIALLY the new Greed Mode and the two new playable characters Lilith andkeeper.
>>123017895
The DLC would be okay if it didn't go out of its way to be annoying in many places, such as item room pedestals being surrounded by rocks, devil deals having nothing but an enemy, secret rooms having enemies, items that have been unmolested for over a year suddenly being nerfed after a few weeks since Afterbirth's release, timegated content, no changelogs, and Edmund being a tremendous anti-consumer faggot on Twitter.

I only have love for the lisa series.
>LISA
>LISA the Painful
>LISA the Joyful
can somebody please explain
>>123042751
LISA the First is a Yume Nikki-like metaphorical dream world exploration game about Lisa Armstrong trying to cope with living with her abusive father, Marty.
LISA the Painful is a post-apocalyptic game about Lisa's brother, Brad Armstrong.
LISA the Joyful is a continuation of Painful about Brad's adoptive daughter, Buddy.
>>123032739
Holy shit, I actually remember this one.
>>123042751
>>123043267
Additionally:
LISA was the first game in the series and was centered around Lisa Armstrong. Brad, Olathe and such were never mentioned.
LISA the Painful's full title is LISA: The Painful RPG. It can be considered painful in a number of ways, such as being emotionally hard-hitting and/or not going easy on the player, and it is indeed and RPG.
LISA the Joyful originally forced the player to take Joy as a means of healing before it was patched with the Mend skill (among other changes).
>>123043950

Last bump before bed
>>123044142
Yeah the narrative leaves no room for a joyless Buddy scenario, unlike Brad in Painful. I went Joyless thanks to Mend and I couldn't figure out whyBuddy was hallucinating, why Big Lincoln's minions call her a monster (like Brad right before mutating), and the end with Yado when she gets hit with the hardest negative late stage effects of Joy.
Honestly, its something I wouldn't mind if we warned newcomers in the OP under Joyless. Tell them to never use Mend and that taking Joy won't give you a bad end (like I was worried about)
The game is so much more of a challenge if you don't use Mend. It wasn't designed for Buddy to have a move that constantly heals her more than they can damage her.
>>123030863
I had a full dream where I was in a cross-country rally that ended with a stretch down a wide, flat, sandy beach at the end. A while before the finish, something fucked up my back axle, and I just went 'ah fuck it' and walked to the finish to tell the others to pick it up. Watched the others go past as I walked, admired the view (it was at night with a full moon, so it looked pretty neat). When I got there I explained what happened, had a few exchanges with the guys, started taking the rest of my driving gear off then just thought "wait, I can't drive" and woke up.
Once I was awake I registered the other weird things like having a rally at night, not having a co-driver, having a rally that ends on a beach etc.
>>123007816
I have these dreams too, about two or three times, that I'm accessing the internet but I realize that I'm dreaming and everything I'm seeing in there is fake... but I continue to not wake up.

Only moderately challenging if you allow using other characters before you get Dick Dickson. Arguably the hardest mandatory battles of the game (Road Scholars, Hair Club Presidents, Sweet Tea Rakeem/Vic Cherry) are already behind you, after all. Could be worse if you also outlaw items.

Think about it, it's the only place on the site to talk about games from the generations just previous to the current one, since /vr/ handles anything older and /vg/ is only suitable for very recent ones.
>>123064715
I've brought up The Amber Throne a couple of times now, but I still haven't seen anyone else comment on it in /indie/. It's a neat RPG, story is pretty good but nothing particular about it stands out. Enemies can change stances whenever a specific thing happens, and they usually change weaknesses and skills with it (i.e hit a foe weak to fire with it, he starts burning and is now resistant to it). Everything is hand drawn too, and that plus the great soundtrack makes a beatiful atmosphere.
Random facts about OFF:
The combat is terrible.
There will never be an official sequel.
There may yet be a remake.
Hugo is the only human in the game.
Elsen are all exactly the same.
Hugo created both Batter and The Queen, not the other way around.
You can find The Judge on top of the library in Zone 2 when backtracking empty zones.
Countenances are better translated as skills. It's not the only poorly translated bit.
There is still untranslated text in the final English version--it is in the secret room in Zone 1 if you did not find the treasure chest before purifying the zone.
The secret ending is based on Silent Hill.
The Queen's whispers are jibberish.
OFF is overrated.

Has anyone else played FTL? It's been quite awhile since my last playthrough. I've managed to unlock every ship in the game, with the type B mantis ship being one of my favorites.
Are any of the OFF fan sequels worth playing?

Yes, I love the game.

I'm playing Howeverhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/cu4hr93e9pe66xf/However.rar?dl=0at the moment. It's okay I guess but it's essentially just a reskin of OFF. >>123094656
You'll be fine, just be humble and don't give up, then your game will be great.
>>123094656You should make it about a pleb who decides to be a warlord, so he goes around hiring people and claiming land and fighting other gangs and whatnot. You could shit on the storyline of LISA by allowing the player to recruit some of Brad's potential party members, fighting Brad and his gang himself, and eventually finding Buddy and deciding how to treat her.

I've got an idea in mind. Simply put, it takes place in a different part of Olathe and follows some nobody who tries to become a warlord so he can beat up some asshole grill dad who freeloaded off of him before the flash.
In other words, keeps all the conventions of the LISA verse (no girls, joy exists, joy mutants exist, e.t.c) but not the characters of the series (maybe except a reference/cameo/secret boss or two)like the furniture man of the body path or a Larry Stintz style rip off character.
I'll probably call it "(Not) Lisa: The Shameful (Knockoff) RPG"I've already started spriting as well as messing around with the painful in RPG maker VX Ace to see how it all works.Though, I've been told my style's a bit too clean/cutesy and not raw/ugly enough for LISA - I need to try and remedy that.
>>123110162

Oh yeah, did we ever get an explanation for the fish-men?
>>123110479He's not turning into a fish man. He's already a fish man. It's a mask.
I always saw the fish men as the result of joy experiments on fish gone wrong. In the Painful, there's a fish man in the joy lab who's labelled as "Repulsive Waste".
>>123110162

I got the science to contribute with an stg list my only doubt is what would exactly count as indie. Do Cave games count as such(they are broke as fuck so...)? I mean outside of gradius and a couple of other good-old-days era games(and even that is quite the stretch) shmups have never been exactly AAA. Besides how thorough should the list be?, with all the touhou/doujin shit out there it can get quite long.

I don't know what side to pick, because even knowing that a Deviantart OC has more quality than this piece of crap, Toby treated the guy like crap. Even if the guy is an autistic furry, he deserved much better than what Toby gave him, after all he paid a lot of of money to fund Undertale.
>>123122206
>>123124848
Wait, Toby was actually reluctant about So Sorry? I thought that was just a rumor spread by /utg/. Or do you just mean because of how hidden he is?

Rumor has it that ButterDragon became aware of his status on ED, and therefore asked Toby to hide his battle character in the game in a way that it doesn't intrudes on the story itself (to the point that you can't actually kill him, but beat him up enough for him to give you his money).

I hope I don't sound like a furry apologist or an indie gossip expert, after all Buttershit deserves all the hate he got, but:
>"Hey thanks for donating 1000! I received your shitty fetish fursona and I'm ready to put it in my game, but I need to do some little changes before that."
>"First I'll put him in a place that the player can't find normally, only if he does a bunch of unrelated shit that he will never find out normally."
>"Then I'll make him irrelevant to anything in the game. He'll not be counted as a necessary kill in the Genocide route and will not stop the player from getting the Pacifist route, even if it's against the fucking message of the game. So in that way there'll be no need to interact with him."
>"Oh, and I'll make him into an unlikable mess with a shit battle so that even if the player wants to find him he'll regret doing so."
>"Now if you excuse me I'll make that spider OC into a full boss battle. I know this sounds unfair because she paid half of what you paid for, but I know what is best for my game, and in my situation you would do the same thing. Besides, you don't want to be like that whale guy, do you? Anyway, thanks a lot for the money!"
>"You are a great partner."
>>123130454
To be honest, if I made a game and some OC character which was based of a fetishy fursona, I'd feel a little ashamed putting him in my game.
I blame Toby for not asking for a more SFW design.

Just remember literally everyone including Rando's friends are trying to rape her and that in story regardless of player actions Buddy should be taking a shit load of Joy to keep killing these warlords.

>>123130940
Anyone in the same situation (even furries) would be embarassed, so that's why people with foresight avoid putting things like "your fantroll becomes canon kek" as the highest backer reward. Toby tried to be a smartass and because of that he created a situation where everyone lost: Samael for losing money in a shit cameo, Toby for having to do a fuckload of damage control, possible backers for losing an opportunity to put a better character in the game, and the players for losing quality content. It's Duncan situation all over again, but in a much smaller scale.
To be honest with the exception of Muffet everyone that donated 500 or more were shitted on by Toby, since their characters had less exposure than fucking NPCs. I still think Toby is a good dev (and an incredible composer) but he really don't know how to implement things outside his "perfect vision", and this is a pretty bad thing considering that he made people believe he could do it, even pay for it via his kickstarter rewards. I mean even Dingaling who told his backers to burn in hell did a better job than him, and he asked for much less.

Cause the main series is over but you gotta milk that cashcow still
At least there's a faint hope the trailer is a big ruse and that it might be darker and better than it seems, or something
I mean it's an RPG, maybe it'll be somewhat like Desolate Hope. Maybe.;_;

There is a dude in the RPG Maker general who is making exactly that.

>>123254467
This so much.
It's unbearable, but I think it was actually a really clever decision on Dingaling's part.
His party can carry him throughthe constant withdrawal up until the end.But the ropes and bike animation make you feel it as a player.

Hey, thanks for the reply and the recommendations!
I'll definitely be checking out Grimstorm and Eternum if only because their names kick ass.
I had no idea l'Abbaye des Morts was by the same guy: I found it while looking for difficult platformers and had a great time with it.

Currently playing Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (just started to get into bullet-hell with release of Mushihimesama on Steam but not good enough to play that yet). As for indie, might finally get Krunch after remembering that it exists and that I had wanted to play it having grown up with those various flash soap bubble/red crow in a mine avoidance time games.
Are theswitchesin resort island hinted at anywhere or is it just a guessing game/super secret? If I wasn't reading the wiki along my first playthrough ruining everything for me because i'm too curious I wouldn't even have known

>playing through lisa for the first time
>kill satan first try with no party members permanently dead (although I did use a lot of perfume)
>read about the absolute bullshit he has going for him after the fight
holy fuck i'm never probably going to pull that off ever again. I'd like to thank terry for making him continuously do 7k crits to himself and birdie for making brad be able to do 8k crits every round with fireball 4 and drunkeness
I've never had a party member permanently die in this game yet other than roulette, i'm not sure if it's just a super low chance of happening or if I'm just super lucky and every other playthrough of this game I'll do after everyone will die
>>123263013
He's a joke when you got Harvey.
>>123263013
If you can make him pissed/blind/oil he's not very hard, you just use perfume every turn or two since he hits for 7k or something. I didn't lose anyone against him either, I mostly lost people against joy mutants.
The chance for instakill attacks is higher on pain mode too.

Are you me? I'm currently on a danmaku fever right now. I've donwloaded all the Touhou series, including the PC98 ones and the similars (Seihou, Project Blank and Breakers), trying to beat them so I can go to other danmakus.
If I can recommend some games outside the most know ones (Ikaruga, Crimzon Clover, etc) the Bullet Heaven series (both games are free, but an upgraded version is coming to Steam) is pretty good, and download Danmaku Death from the Play Store if you want a mobile alternative.

Seriously, there was no reason Glyde had to be tucked away next to Toby's super sekrit self insert room. He would fit perfectly fine as a Waterfall enemy, especially since he's quite similar to Aaron.
>>123294798
A friend of mine is doing another joy Frisk, so sit tight.
I didn't even know Garth, Satan, Yazan and others were backer characters before the internet opened my eyes. I just couldn't tell, they all felt fitting. Garth might be a cringey tumblr fetishist IRL, but the idea of someone in Olathe making a living out of drawing porn is more than believable.
Overall I'd say Dingaling did a great job working backer characters into his world, but in Toby's defence I'll say that it is harder to fuck up when your character design guidelines are "dudes" rather than "dangerously furry animal-like monsters"
>>123294798
>>123299707
the drawing ended up kinda weird because i was testing some stuff on SAI
>>123276168
>Brad is autistic and disabled and trans
Disabled is correct, probably mislabeling him as autistic when really he's just psychologically broken from an abusive childhood. Finally considering Slave Lord Jim and Queen Roger's stages are optional and Brad "Feels weird" in that red leotard he wears I doubt he's comfortable being dressed as a woman like a tranny would be.
>Buddy is autistic and asexual, she's not interested in sex she just wants to kill all the warlords to become the strongest human in Olathe
Buddy is definitely really blunt about her desires, but she does show that she can concern herself with others. Like when she asks if Rando is ok staying up after like the third night without sleep. If she's autistic then it'd be a high functioning mild form of it. Asexual seems less likely, I mean for fuck sake she's like 12-13 and any adult male there wants to brutally rape her. Plusthe baby at the end of Joyful which has a high chance of being hers and mutant Brad's child.
>Queen Roger is trans and gay
He seems to fully comprehend that he's still male even when wearing female clothing. Roger's a transvestite and gay or maybe bisexual since he seems to define himself apart from his gay brothel workers.
>Crisp Ladaddy
Crisp is just gay, he seems fully capable of regular social interaction. He just happened to fall in love with a guy who is just a head.
>Terry is autistic and depressed
Depressed is obvious, he makes a hint about it after all. I can see making hints about everything and spreading them through Olathe to be autistic or OCD. Though socially he seems pretty capable, after all he manages to become integrated in either Columbo or Brad's gang depending on your choice.

I hopped from Undertale to OFF to LISA, and I hate LISA's combat system with passion. Spamming the same 3 abilities for >10 rounds against every single generic enemy is not my idea of fun.
>>123363791
Honestly, that is kinda RPG combat in a nutshell. This is why I feel why RPG combat systems needs to give a creative spin on the traditional encounters.
I didnt mind OFF's because it was so bare-bones, LISA's wasnt too bad, each party member kept it interesting and at times fun, Joyful however was pretty bad, I'd say even worse than OFF.Undertale's is 50/50, I liked the bullet-hell styled encounters and puzzle aspects, but for Genocide run, I'd say its pretty dull.
>>123363692
>Even the looping is broken and jarring
>>123364090
It especially feels like a letdown that after 25 years of JRPG combat systems to take inspiration from, the creator CHOSE to make the game a boring slog. With all the healing shit you're given, hitting an enemy 30 times isn't even difficult. It's just tedious. High risk/high reward gameplay would have made the game much more fun to play.
I rushed through Genocide's random encounters with the up/down trick while watching TV, so I didn't mind it as much. You're one-shotting everything anyways, and the bosses are where the excitement is.
>>123365139
Not to go too much on about it since there is already a /UT/ thread but;Genocide mode random encounters and bosses where kinda Eh, Aside from Undyne, everything felt like a slog. The Sans fight was hype for the first 10 trys, then it got really boring.
>>123363791
You didn't like LISA's combat? I thought it was very enjoyable after the first crossroads.

>>123360973
From the same creator (Remigiusz Michalski aka Rem) you can download Downfall:

You have a pretty good taste. Rem is a good desginer. Glyde is one of the few cases that actually really annoyed me. I wonder if the guy who made Glyde wanted the battle to be like that, or if he thought the design was really coolit kinda isand Toby just shat all over him.
With the way he acts with the steam reviews and his twitter, Toby kinda seems like a hack.
>>123374046
>the way he acts with the steam reviews and his twitter
What does he do?
I don't really pay attention to anything related to the game.
>>123374286
He put people's criticisms on the steam page along with their 10/10 ratings, pretty much showing that he isn't taking any criticism in at all.
He's just a sarcastic ass about everything on twitter.
>>123299456
>>123374046
And remember that he paid 500 for his cameo, the same amount as Muffet, and she was so well implemented that most undergoats don't even know she was from a backer.
It's impossible that he and Samael wanted their battles to be like what they got in the game, specially after seeing Muffet. Only if they're class A+ retards or they like to burn money. Toby played them like a damn fiddle and you know it.
>>123374589
I think that was a joke.
As in these people gave him 10/10s but still had issues with the game.
To me it seemed like he was mocking how meaningless review scores actually are, if he was even trying to make a statement and didn't just put negative comments with 10/10s next to them as just being funny by the simple contrast between what they say and the actual ratings.
>>123374589
You mean this?
I think it's a joke, m8.
>>123376237
And once the backers realize their mistakes, they feel like a puppet with its strings cut
>>123376237
Muffet wasn't made by a backer though. She was made by a guest artist for a stretch goal.
>>123377093
All my sources says she's a backer character, even her wiki page says so in the first paragraph:
http://undertale.wikia.com/wiki/Muffet
"She was a bought-in character during the Kickstarter for the game."
And in the kickstater page:
http://undertale.wikia.com/wiki/Undertale_Kickstarter
"The fightable monsters were later revealed to be Glyde and Muffet. The fantroll was later revealed to be So Sorry."
It's true she was made by a guest artist (Michelle Czajkowski), but hey, artists can be backers too you know? After all Samael was a backer.
When you mention the stretch goal I think you're talking about the secret boss Toby plans to implement in the game as the 12500 rewardand will not deliver just like everything else. Or it'll be non-canon.
This is what I'm talking about when I said Muffet was well implemented in the game. Would I had to go search for sources to reply you if we're talking about So Sorry and Glyde? I couldn't even find out who the hell designed Glyde, and if not for the controversy I bet we would never know about Samael too.
>>123371034

>>123383738
It's just self-irony. It's not intended as a mockery of the reviewers, it's a "10/10 it's shit -IGN" type of joke.
What really makes me upset about Toby is that he still hasn't played LISA despite knowing that Dingaling played Undertale and commenting on it. That and copyright jewery. He's a bit of a shitty person, but he doesn't lack self-irony and self-awareness.
>>123384225
He was right about complaining when people just took his sprites and slapped them on t-shirts, bags, etc. and sold them
But it feels kinda shitty to tell people not to sell fanworks with original fanart of them (outside fanart commissions and one-of-a-kind plush/figure commissions)

>>123403605
One that can be a preferable alternative to simply spamming pure damage attacks in most fights. In LISA, burning, poison and bleeding are great utility against bosses, and most enemies can be stunned, paralyzed or scared etc. LISA also has few random encounters and most fights are minibosses of sorts, actually incentivizing you to use status effects.
Compare that to most generic JRPGs where status effects never work on bosses and everything else is a trash random encounter where it's not worth spending your MP on poisoning or silencing them when you can just mash attack and win even faster.
>>123404967
Ah, gotcha. And as a fag who's trying to throw something together in RPGM, thanks.
>>123405592
If you want some more insight into well-implemented status effects and buffs, look into the Shin Megami Tensei series as well as Final Fantasy V (and the latter installments to some extent).
Good statuses go a great length towards making turn-based combat challenging and interesting, and it's good you're paying attention to it for your game.

ROM isn't on sale, or at least yet.
Really disappointing, it's on the top of my wishlist.
what game should Ipirate
>There are people in this very thread who have played Wadanahora and the Great Blue Sea and genuinely thought that Dolphi was male when they saw her

>Bastion
Just played this, can confirm. The music is fucking beautiful, combat is okay and the story is worth seeing.Destroying the Animal bastion and carrying that faggot Zolf to the skybridge both gave me legit feels.
>>123421789
Pirating indie games is fucking retarded.
They're like 1/4th the cost of normal games, at most, and many are starving artists. Except unlike music or something, you're stealing the only thing they can sell.

>Broken Age
As a regretful backer, no, it's mediocre garbage at best.
And Superbrothers is a rather dull experience to be honest
But Gemini Rue is one I don't see talked about, that's a pretty great traditional PaC adventure game. Not quite as good as Beneath a Steel Sky but still good.
>>123423284
Another neat thing a lot of people don't realize90% of the enemies in the final level don't attack you until you attack them
>>123430330
I haven't played Broken Age yet. Superbrothers is nice if you like pretty things and don't mind slower pacing at times. I liked it. Gemini Rue is an essential indie PaC game.

>ctrl+f blackwell
>no matches
what the fuck
everyone go play blackwell, it's a fucking masterpiece series by the guy who made gemini rue
it's the game that convinced me point-and-clicks were worth it
>>123431210
it's one of my favorite things about the game, thatmost of the "enemies" aren't really enemies at all; they're just scared, panicky animals
>>123429941
Guacameele is $2, if you can't afford that shit you should just be emulating retro games.
>Crypt Worlds in the OP
Fuck yeah, I love that game.
Anyway, I just got LISA off the Steam Sale. Is there anything I should know going in?
>>123433594
Don't pick pain mode thinking you're tough shit or anything like that. If you're gonna play pain mode, at least do it after one playthrough. Also, if you don't take any joy, you get a different ending.
>>123433594
To get the Joyless ending I'm pretty sure you can't give Brad or any of his gang members Joy.
>>123433594
It starts slow, but after you beat the first boss and get the bike, it picks up speed (no pun intended).
>>123433749
Can confirm, my first playthrough was Pain Mode and I feel like the game assumes it's not your first time. It's very much like doing Genocide on your first Undertale play.

I'd personally move Long Arms up to Good Tier just because of how ridiculous both Energy Sword and Ultra Shovel become with it on.
Completely agree with the list otherwise.

You have Rogue in both Good and Okay tier.
Tier everyone's Ultras next.

You can also argue that shotgun shoulders should be higher when you consider how powerful it is paired with the ultra shotty.

I'm actually not sure about a lot of these. They made several changes in the last couple updates that might adjust the placements a bit (Robot's got a small upgrade, Rebel's got shuffled around, etc). It seems like there are a few characters (Fish, YV, Melting) that have really stellar ultras that can totally change the way you play, and for everyone else they don't make that much of a difference

I remember playing this in high school in the old computer labs when I was bored and class was moving slow, I'd impress all my friends because I had already beaten them at home
Sweet Tea Rakeem with Vic Cherry is the only fight that gives me a hard time at all in Pain Mode.
Is there anything I can do to make LISA more difficult? I was thinking Brad-only, but that sounds more like a grindy fuckfest than a fun challenge.
>>123459252
Mandatory Party Members Only. Joyless. No Inns. No savescumming any permadeath (mutants, roulette, campfires). (Probably not all at once)
>>123459252
Joyful run : Only use Joy members
> Means giving up Terry at the start and grinding at the start to beat Charmy but is kinda fun.
Hotline LISA : Only use animal mask members
>Again, grindy at the start

What are the most successful (in terms of fame and/or profit) series that started as simple browser games? GROW is pretty famous, but ones like Trials made it into the big leagues in terms of making money.
Meat Boy is at the top of both lists, since Edmund became one of the most well-known indie devs after he made Super a multiplatform game.
>>123462152
KanColle, if that counts.
Is Undertale really an RPG? It barely has any RPG mechanics and what it does have aren't really used outside of Neutral Route.
>>123466058
Random encounters. Hitpoints. Agency.
The danmaku mechanics don't stop it from being an RPG any more than Morrowind's real-time combat stops it from being an RPG.
>>123468123
I didn't mean the danmaku didn't make it an RPG, just that I think it would probably be better described as a visual novel if I were explaining the gameplay to a friend.
Amazing gameplay so far; really brutal.
>>123468461
IMO the presence of gameplay tends to remove games from the "novel" pool.
Chaos;Head is a visual novel. Player skill isn't required to experience every route of the game.
Sengoku Rance is a strategy/tactics/roleplaying game with VN elements. If the player sucks enough at video games, they may not be able to finish even a single playthrough.
>>123468461
Adventure game with danmaku elements is a better way to put it. Undertale's RPG elements are "fake" (save for hitpoints in a neutral run I suppose), but it's not a visual novel if it has central gameplay mechanics with agency involved.

Bastion is pretty good, if you haven't played that one yet.
OFF is interesting.
All of the LISAs are fun and somewhat compelling at times.
Transistor, by the same people who did Bastion.
I enjoyed The Stanley Parable, but your mileage may vary.
