>Please Dr. Turkey, you're our only hope!
Edition

> Can the game be considered a full release?
No, for all intents and purposes, KSP should be considered still in early access state.
The game is nowhere near being able to stand on its own legs both from a gameplay perspective (career mode is definitely not ready and balanced) and a stability perspective.
There are still major bugs and memory leaks that shouldn't exist on a finished game.

> Are there big issues with the game?
Bugs and instability are still real and frequent problems, as with every product still in beta. Ask in thread for details.

> What are the devs doing?
Modified versions of popular mods are being included in the stock game while the game engine is being upgraded to its latest version. The next major update (1.1) is supposedly going to bring a complete overhaul of the GUI, be 64bit friendly, have a refined physics/heating/aero model and generally perform better.
An external team with heavily questionable experience (Flying Tiger Entertainment) is being tasked with porting the game to PS4, XboxOne and Wii U. They seem to be rushing for an imminent deadline and they are also working on a version of the game that will be obsolete in a few weeks/months.

> Should I buy the game?
KSP is very enjoyable at first, then it usually needs to be modded to retain some sort of longevity, but doing so may dramatically increase the instability of the game. You will be very familiar with the word "Oops!".
The Developers, Squad, have shown many times that they can't handle the project and are trying to squeeze all the money they can with the least amount of effort and with controversial PR tactics.
The general consensus at /kspg/ is that you shouldn't purchase the game, not because the game itself is unplayable, but because most of us agree that Squad does not deserve your money.

So begins the golden era of /kspg/.

You know they said they're gonna wait for 1.1 until console versions are out, do you?

Reminder that if you hated Maxmaps the best thing you can do is deprive him of the oxygen he needs to survive is to never bring him up again.

>In a VERY general summary, right now the plan is to consolidate current projects, consoles and the 1.1 update as smoothly as possible.
Is this where you're getting that from?
>>
>>122772350
I think it's more pointing out the development schedule hit the fan like hot shit out of an obese dunkin donuts enthusiast and now some hard choices will need to be made.

The problem of having six different versions of the game was the death knell of November 2016, a sort of clusterfuck of preorder shilling followed by a sudden abandonment of the idea.

If D.turk is trying to reinforce the dev schedule and unify all system ports, it might be a sign they dont plan to squeeze every last drop out then leave it like a dessicated hulk.

Although the only real choice, and it's a hard one, is that he needs to make the call to scrap the WiiU/Wii/PS4 and Xbone versions.

Tear that band-aid, turk. It's the only silver bullet that aligns the planets and makes your proton torpedo fit into the thermal exhaust port of Max's soul-selling of the entire enterprise.

†bh, I think it was me linking kasp to Max's confessional imgur album. Kasp pulled the fire alarm when he perceived it to be "out" that Max was getting fired.

Less than five minutes after I linked it to him a tweet popped up on Max's twitter making the announcement. Very rushed. Said he was gonna showcase multiple games other than KSP on squadcast, made one "epic" rocket that he slammed into the surface of the mun, then he started to break down and ended it 23 minutes early with the statement that "I have been fabulous."

Max realized his lies had created two identities, and the end was him cycling violently between the two identities, being "professional" while actually hating KSP and wanting to be "real" -- well it failed and the entire thing went down without a second thought and the few billies who knew who he was have already forgotten about him.

As far as why he got fired, I mean look at what a mess the roadmap is. Version numbers don't even fucking mean anything anymore. Modders are freaking out about the concept of a "silent update"

I think everyone finally realized he added nothing. All at once. The imgur album helped. He made some huge mistakes by posting here.

So Max really was an evil mastermind
>>
>>122781195
Evil? Yes.
Mastermind? Idk, masterminds usually end up on top, not fired with little fanfare.
>>
>>122781263
Assuming he got truly fired.
I find the moving to better paying job hypothesis quite believable, after all he was a master in billy-pandering
>>
>>122781849
According to his linkedin he's director of a charity now. I'm sure they'll really love paying someone to add nothing.

I don't really care, as long as he is far away from KSP.
>>
>>122781948
Check again. It hasn't changed from Squad.
>>
>>122782183
Ah right there's prob thousands of miguel sabidos.

Well that's a sign he doesn't have some fancy new job he's off to. If he did, he would have bragged and gallivanted around by now.

I can only hope his grand plan was to just play FO4 for a few months, and that the gamebreaking bugs are now forcing him to understand what it feels like when a developer doesn't bother to QA their product.

they have admitted as much in devnotes, but more importantly, it's what **isn't** being added to allow three simultaneous ports to catch up with current development.

They've provided no transparency as to how U5 or mp (still in development™) will be added into a supposedly locked in publish date.

And the guy who jammed the autopilot onto this course just jumped out with the last three parachutes because he was too lazy to detach them from each other before jumping.

Like I told you, when you're this low you can only go up. I know you're new but let me give you a quick protip: If you correlate the sales of KSP to the time that CaptSkunky was part of the team, you'll see that the game never sold better than when he was around. He was even so good that he was rehired to help out after leaving for the first time.

You should establish dominance by having Skunky rehired.

Not the fastest, but quite fast at ~10 seconds.
It is no formula1, here you have one guy at each wheel which has to remove and replace the wheel all by himself, whereas in F1 you have one guy at the gun, one guy that removes the old wheel and one that puts the new one on (and lots of training), which translates in <3sec pit stops.

If you are talking about the guys doing pit stops, then there isn't really anything secret. A pit stop is "public", nobody is going to complain about people taking pictures and there is TV too.
If you are talking about all the teams in the garages behind, well, they run in completely different series on completely different cars than the guys doing pit stops in front of them, so there is not much " espionage" to do.

Anyway, you account for people being curious and set up your garage and car so bystanders can't see too many details about it.

The unfortunate thing is, with the new environmental laws for commercial air traffic, it's literally illegal to land supersonic jets in the EU because supersonic flight uses more fuel for less passengers than normal jets.
We won't ever have supersonic airlines if they can't fly between Europe and USA. The alternatives?
USA to Africa? No commercial interest. USA to China? Too little commercial interest. USA to Japan? Too little commercial interest. USA to Australia? What. Africa to China? Hahaha.
>>
>>122857908
They have 3 times the people we are allowed to have during our pit stops, of course they are faster than us.
And by "us" I mean my teammates, because I don't do pit stops in this particular championship.

Anyway, pit stops times are usually between 17 and 20 seconds, where 17 is very fast and 20 is quite slow
>>
>>122858030
Damn you, Mother Nature.
>>
>>122858030
I thought they were only banned from going supersonic.
>>
>>122855459
Looking at that, I again have to admire the skill of those drivers. Those cars are built for controllability at top speed, they're twitchy as fuck at low speed, and they still have to have good enough control that they can drive in there without hitting anyone, and stop in the right position so the crew won't lose time on taking a step left or right.

I mean, I've seen some of the best normal-car drivers in the world fail to even get one of those cars going from standing still.
>>
>>122858551
No commercial air traffic to or from the EU is allowed to exceed a certain amount of fuel per person per tonne of plane. You can't get enough fuel efficiency in a supersonic plane to meet the requirements.

I suppose you could schedule the flight to go to Russia instead, and then simply fake an engine problem over Paris and get permission for an "emergency" landing, but I doubt that would work more than once.
>>
>>122858030
There were no particular legal issue with Concorde. It was financial issues that killed him (mostly, the 2001 accident triggered the whole thing).
It could only reach his cruising speed above the ocean, though.
>>
>>122858715
The law came about after the Concord, and it's based on fuel consumed during the entire trip, not just in the EU.

The US didn't allow the Concorde to fly over it on the first place. Some people believe it was out of spite because Boeing's supersonic plane failed. But at the end of the day, since the Concorde wasn't allowed over America, it was not as profitable as expected, thus it was the US the one that killed supersonic civil transport :^)
>>
>>122861824
>outsourcing ecological damage
It doesn't work that way. There's only one earth.
>>
>>122867657
I don't even see the issue, water is the largest part of the journey anyway, would it really be that much less efficient to only accelerate to supersonic once over water?
>>
>>122862060
>with inferior processes in cheap countries
That's not how it works. You demand the company on that cheap country to meet a criteria, and then that company abuses lax labor works and bribable agents to cut down the costs. Why would you even pay for shitty screws when you told them to manufacture them with some specified qualities?

>huge amounts of oil
Pls, modern freighter transport is super cheap, you don't transport a single screw for every super freighter on the hundreds of tons.
>>
>>122867753
The company operating the SST needs to operate on a lot of country with a lot of people with some extra money to even be profitable. By having to just land on the east cost, you wreck that profitability. Of course, people on the west coast would just fly their average plane to the east, then go up on ther SST, and then to Europe, assuming the transit from one plane to another is fast. But on that situation, the companies not having the SST would take passengers that the other plane could be taking, and should take to stay profitable.
I think the Concorde's idea was to go from Europe, all over the US, and then East Asia. Half their expected money was gone when America told them "no."
>>

>the US denies the company to fly over it

Okay. So if Europe, Asia, and the Americas ban every form of aircraft, it's not the regulations reducing much of their potential market that kill Airlines, but the lack of revenues obtained on Africa and Antarctica.
We went over this before, read older replies.

Then again, you cannot use gps while submerged, and you are susceptible to be picked up by radar if you are near the surface. So modern technology doesn't take the fun out of some good subbin'

Real navigation is fun if you can set up waypoints, or alarms or some shit that drop you out of time warp. I'd honestly prefer a game that I have to pay for up front, get the planes in a reasonable tier system that reflects that, and isn't built upon fifty variants of the same plane for each faction.

I came to /kspg/ again to ask "gee isn't re-entry still not very dangerous?" and saw the OP and I got pissed. I was all "oh you fucking god damned salty vagina bitches *resources are literally in the game why are you crying like gigantic pussies* and then

and then

I saw

>(career mode is definitely not ready and balanced)

And I shut my fucking mouth.

Because, say what you will, balancing the game is not that fucking resource intensive. Hard? Yes, it is very hard. But that's what people get degrees in "game design" for, and god knows the game industry is enough of a thankless, violent backstabbing rat race that you ought to be able to find ONE motherfucker who'll jump at the chance and prove competent at it, even if your existing devteam can't balance all the plates. Same for aero forces; with even the fucking fuel tanks having a safe temp of 2,000 degrees, heatshields are STILL fucking useless except for Eve re-entry, in which case they up your mass budget a bit, whuppity fukkin doo.

IMO career mode being an unbalanced pile of trash is a symptom of what has dogged KSP for years - the devteams inability to make a fucking decision.

I remember the constant mechpleb trolling wars well - especially the guy who worked as a real-life NASA probe controller who said "guys, shut the fuck up." They argued constantly over whether or not MechJeb was "right" or "wrong" for the game. I pointed out that Squad supported mods specifically so people could play the game how they wanted to, but despite that *they did have an objective, single goal to aim at-* i.e. the intended general audience for the 1.0 finished release.* And I opined that we didn't have stock flight planning functionality because they were still making the decisions on how to implement that in a way that fit the rest of the game.

I think you might even think what I think, but for some reason, your post is just unreadable.

Let's talk about how tall Imperator Trump's wall should be.
>>
>>122972985

What we got was exactly the right thing - it lets you actually fucking plan missions, instead of the old "when the Mun crests the horizon, PUNCH IT" methods - but, much like the rest of KSP, it's interactive and dynamic. It's not just "press butan for trans-munar injection" and it's not "here's a nice GUI aid so you can get out your fucking protractor and do orbital math calculations on your own." No. You can yank on all the arrows and see what shit DOES - playing with maneuver nodes is how I got a much better idea of what normal/antinormal, radial/antiradial burns actually do. It's the exact right combination for KSP, the "hands-on" approach.

And it took way, way too fucking long to implement. I think anyone who's played KSP since .17 or .18 can agree with me on that.

And frankly, every single time we've been left hanging, waiting for a fucking major functionality upgrade, I've gotten the consistent impression that it's not Sqad's inability to code, but Squad's indecision as to WHAT to code. Making a decision they later need to revise means they'll have to revise some code and maybe even GUI elements to fit; and that's not a LOT of work, but it is SOME work, so they dither, and dither, and dither. Coding? A lot of grunt-work, but at the end of the day that's what coders fucking do, they CODE. But committee meetings where people sit around trying to agree on the VISION for the game? That's something else.

The multiple mods that were incorporated into Stock says a lot, I think - Fine Print was integrated, after all. Before that... what was on Squad's whiteboard? Did they have an item that said "HOLLA HOLLA GET A DOLLA" on there, and Fine Print just happened to be a nice format that they copied? Or did they not have the fucking idea of contracts at all, not even the rough concept, until that mod was released? I suspect something more towards the latter - the mod was released, was VERY popular with players, so they were able to say "yeah, good idea."

That's something Squad has never done, that I can remember - release a feature and then later nix it or significantly change how it works becuase it turned out to suck. That's the kind of freedom the early release format is supposed to allow you; it's like one massive ongoing beta test for companies without the money for focus groups and shit. Squad doesn't seem to use this. Anything they commit to, they commit to fully, and that results in the timid attitude they seem to have about moving the fucking game forward.

We all remember Farmer Jeb's BarnVAB incident - I think you can really see all this in play, right there. It wasn't really focus-grouped; or even pitched to the forum crowd as a "hey guys, what if?" We first heard about it when the models were being worked on, IIRC. Either Squad had generated this idea and decided to back it as a committee, or the guy making the models had decided to do this on his own and was already spending his paid working hours on it without The Committee's approval. The former is an example of a decision process that's shit because it only has its own echo chamber to work with; unable to source the larger views of actual players that would provide fresh insight and allow them to make a decision much faster, and with much more confidence that its right. The latter is an example of a devteam working with a VERY sketchy overall design document, so sketchy that shit like's JEB'S FARM can actually eat up paid developer time before the REEEEEs of the community can kill it.

You guys obsess over this shit a lot more than I do, so tell me - am I spot on, or is Squad's problem something else entirely?

>We said yes because we waited equally as long for absolutely nothing besides stockified better buoyancy and a cargo loading ramp.

I wish you hadn't said this. I fucking wish you hadn't said this.

I tend to jump back into KSP for a few days of intensive playing every time a new release comes out and looks all shiny. I was ALL OVER 1.0, got lazy, didn't feel like downloading 1.02 because the aero actually mattering would mean I'd have to relearn spaceplane building all over again. Then, as usual, I read the patch notes and squealed like a bitch. Stock fucking radiator parts!? So I can use LV-Ns without goddamn bullshit!? Re-entry heating is actually in and fucking doing something? Yes! PARACHUTES CAN ACTUALLY FUCKING SNAP? FUCK YES!

And then I play and quite quickly realize how foolish my hope was. Career mode is still the most retardedly balanced thing in existence. Aero heating is almost completely fucking pointless because damn near every fucking part has a max skin temp of 2,000 degrees - and not even a direct free-return from the Mun, with the VERY high velocities that implies, will reliably exceed that. At the very fucking least re-entry isn't 1000% easymode now because you've actually got to angle for a nice, gradual approach so you don't lithobrake before you deaccelerate enough in the <10k meter zone to pop chutes, and drouge chutes are actually useful (a bit,) but... for fucks sake. For FUCKS sake, how hard is it to move some parts around, and tweak some fucking data file values? Like, maybe fuel tanks should be a little more delicate, you know? Fuck.

FUCK.

So yeah. Six months - six months and you got buoyancy, and a cargo ramp. And who the fuck cares about buoyancy without parts for submarines or whatnot? I built an airboat seven versions ago with the plane modpack and sent it to Laythe. Who the fuck needs it? Fuck. FUCK.

Bugfixes? I'd like to say "they spent all their time on bugfixes" but for fucks sake the people making balance decisions aren't coders, they're the "game designers" or some other management position. The assholes who make powerpoints and sit and ponder the Deep Questions and then make decisions and shit. In the stillness since the evil one's departure, I've had time to contemplate what I find so troublesome about the development arc of the game, and I want to take a shot at expressing my discontent here. I won't take long.

In the beginning, it was the VAB and the launchpad. These "buildings" existed on the KSC screen and as "rooms" that functions of the game could be executed within.

And so it was that building and launching became two primary functions of the game. And it was good. The team grew, the game grew, and the scope grew. And that growth was reflected in the creation of auxiliary buildings like the tracking center and the spaceplane infrastructure, along with R&D and eventually the Mission Control and Admin buildings.

Each building reflects a different facet of the game. It's as if Squad asked themselves: "What would our game studioread: marketing company look like if we had infinite budget and instead of a marketing company we were kerbals and made spaceships?

And thus the overarching game philosophy was gradually eked out over multiple eras of development, representing the patchwork development history of the game.

And it was good, for the game did need such a guiding principal. Functionalities like persistence were represented by the tracking center. R&D contained part development although it's segregation from Sandbox is somewhat disappointing, if not dastardly designed to be so and Mission Control allows you to tweak contracts and the admin building allows "strategic" play of the grindy career mode.

But there's one problem, the guy most recently in charge did not respect the conventions of the game, and so instead of filling out the game that had been structurally outlined, he instead added two misguided hierarchies on top.

1) Segregating Career, Science and Sandbox mode -- this created three separate gameplay experiences that segregated different playertypes.

(1/2, probably)

Oh wait, no, the spelling is too good for it to be rem now that I actually look at it.
Was rem's autism finally surpassed?
>>
>>122990897
(2/2)

2) Adding a difficulty panel above the game's current hierarchy.

This means that now you can play any one of a couple thousand iterations of the game based on your difficulty, and then you can choose career, sandbox, science mode on top, and from there you play "the game" -- this makes QA and game-shaping nearly impossible and leads to a quagmired development roadmap.

What Turk should do is refocus the game based on the difficulties, make "easy" what the game is today, maybe add more easiness for early career, and make "hard" actually fucking what space is like.

I agree with you on the lack of focus, but I see no problem with having sandbox and Science modes. Fuck, if it wasn't for sandbox mode, I bet a lot of people wouldn't bother - and Science mode at least challenges you to build rockets without fuel lines and other challenges, and go further afield to get more science with less parts. It's very important because it gives you challenge, and a reason to fucking GO places aside from plopping down a flag, WITHOUT forcing Career mode's utterly fucked balance on you.

>this makes QA and game-shaping nearly impossible and leads to a quagmired development roadmap.

There's a simple solution to that, though - assume that career mode is the "base game," the one with all the features; combining rewards (through science and inherent record-breaking bonuses) for going places just for the sake of going there, and contracts that issue interesting challenges to be met (if ever they make them actually interesting) and reward you with cashdolla.

"Sandbox" needs no dev work at all - it's just Sandbox. You get all the toys upfront, very simple. Science mode is the only one that might be difficult to keep "balanced" but without the many cost restrictions of Career mode, going further afield to get more Science really shouldn't be that hard - if anything, they ought to give you all the science you can pick up from KSP Central's mini-biomes up-front just to cut out that grind and jumpstart the early game, without having to fuck around with launching that first five or six part ship.

Just like the maneuver node thing, they need to just fucking focus on the core product, and let ancillary permutations of it take care of themselves. If the core is strong, adjusting the rest of it is simple - and even if it isn't, if the CORE GAME is there, other game modes being rough around the edges can be forgiven.

Apparently they're not good at this.

You actually land on the exact opposite side as me, I never play career, just because it received more development time does not mean it is necessarily better. I only play sandbox and use mods for entertainment. >Implying entertainment

My argument is that it's a goddamn shame you and I are now diametrically opposed, due to the fragmented roadmap.

A "soft" integration of contracts and/or science mode could have been created within a sandbox paradigm, and you could uncheck things like "re-entry heat" or "no reverting" -- rather than make a hard choice as the first thing you do. Now the two are irreconcilable.

I'd hate for the takeaway here to be that Sandbox should be removed. That would be like installing another meaningless limitation to a well-developed game, the main detractor I'm decrying for forward progress.

You're saying that they may as well have integrated the sandbox/science/career mode all together on the difficulty menu, and added re-entry heat/reverting there as checkable options too, instead of fucking around with three distinct "game styles" that are further belabored with sub-choices in yet another sub-menu. They've introduced a needless rigidity to the system, when it could easily have been much more flexible - as the many tweaks available in the debug menu handily demonstrate.

Okay, that makes sense. You're not saying "remove sandbox," you're saying "remove this CHOOSE NOW, AND FOREVER HOLD YOUR PEACE" bullshit when you start a new persistent save. Sensible.

Precisely, but I'd go one step further and ask the audience what they think of Max's admitted predilection for fascism and the precise ideology that has permeated the game that you detail.

I'm not saying the knot is gordian, but we need to know when to use scissors.

Hey guys, I've been staying away from KSP since 1.0.5 came out since I wanted a rest after testing it, how've you guys been? I see the OP has been changed to be less insane, and interestingly there's been a bunch of neat discussion in the thread, dunno if the two are related or what, but its cool.

That's right because Strawpolls are very expensive. I guarantee this was posted a week before 1.0 hit and to the subreddit only I guarantee it. I don't lie here, it's pointless, people figure out lies. This is the god's honest truth.

But if you choose to believe what you want to believe, that is fine. Unless you show me an archived page with a link to that exact poll, I will continue to believe what I believe.

The PID for those heading-alignment nodes is different to the stability hold one. They really like to be extremely wasteful just like Mechjeb; if you want to flip 180 degrees for example, rather than hold right yaw for 90 then left yaw for 90 (to stop rotation exactly on 180), they do something like right 5 left 4 right 5 left 4 right 5 etcetc.

and to divide by the derivative of x

let x = 3u for example

the integral of e^(3u) is not e^(3u) it's (e^(3u))/3

Actually it's just e^x plus the constant of integration. Derivative with respect to x/y/z/etc is only part of the integral form before integrating.

Silent hunter 5.

It is slow as fuck at times, but if you do not play on full autism mode like I do, you do not need to play as slow and tedious.

The developers did a good job in making this game fun for billy and the autists. The UI is terrible so you will need a mod for that.

I just had my first enemy contact. Planes discovered me and started shooting, thought my gunner could take care of it but we got hit a few times. Crash dived and now waiting for these guys to go away while damage is repaired.

In other news, this upcoming week Sweden will evaluate a proposal to change the national anthem, as the current one is "too nationalistic".

Just went to the drug store and picked up garbage bags, toothpaste, soap, etc, all of which I was dangerously low on, and grabbed some lunch. Now I'm going to take some methamphetamines and work and then once I've completed this project later I'll smoke a fat spliff and play cities

I might also play battlestations pacific because I want to feel connected with the guys in this general.

KSP cleaned up its garbage by wiping the memory on revert like a grown up fucking piece of software.
>>

>grown up piece of software

There you go. This program has Indian tier code.
>>
>>123086635
Here's the thing - it does. Unity has a really solid garbage collection function, that does just that. Every time the scene is changed or reloaded, Unity unloads as many things as possible - that's why it's rather rare to find a Unity project with fatal memory leak, and if it is there, it's almost always very easy to track down because it would be eating memory by the second.

Squad has somehow, through some kind of dark Mexican magic, managed to break it, so it only unloads certain things. I'm not sure how. I'm not sure I want to know how.

But.

They fucking did it.
