Listen bud, everyone here can tell your a millennial. Just because you post progress doesnt guarantee replies. While your progress may mean a lot to YOU, you have to also remember that most people will not see it as that important. In all likely hood, your progress isn't even what most people here consider to be 'progress'. Getting up in the morning and opening an IDE isnt progress. You have to make it interesting for people, or they are not going to reply. The reason people reply to the shitposters is because usually the stuff they most is outlandish and dramatic, which is interesting to humans, just look at things like tabloids. You have to bring something to the table with your shit, or people simply wont care. Go ahead and post your progress. Having a webm helps, cause people like to see stuff in action. But posting a picture of some enemy design you made or some new art work that looks like shite probably isn't going to get you very far. Think with your head man. Ask yourself, what do the people, the consumer of my media, want to see? And try to deliver that. You don't have to change your game concept to fit popular opinion, but you gotta make it something that the average person here will care enough about to take the time out of THEIR day to reply to it. No one is entitled to replies.

It's essentially: you're born in 10000 BCE, you're visited by the last human alive who is suffering from the end of the Universe (entropy), and he gives you a pill that makes you immune to aging (not violence or other death).
You then can either influence humanity from the shadows, assuming fake identities every lifetime, or you can become a world leader and dictator. If you become famous but don't "die" normally, a leader would get suspicious and you'd be on the operating table.
You can influence:
--religion
--government
--technology
--science and medicine
--culture and the arts
--weaponry and war

once per 5 years. You could max out religion in the early BCs and be a prophet and later use that power to enact a second coming, or you could invent things early on and set humanity forward.

The thing is that there are certain "milestone conditions" -- you can't get funds for your entropy research if you're not skilled in physics and at least a little influential in government.

The win condition is you have to have a sustainable amount of entropy production that will last humans a trillion years.

Heavily based on The Final Question. It'd be in the rough style of Plague, Inc.

It sounds nice for a simulation game, but you might want to break it down some more. Like, what is Entropy? How do I get it? What's the limit? Can I increase that limit? What can I use it on?

What are the consequences of doing X as opposed to Y? Can I advance this world beyond what was established in the real world? Can I introduce science in an era where science was considered witchcraft? Can I prevent the discovery of something that changes the world?

Will the world continue to move when I'm "dead"? How will the world continue? Will it be based on RNG, my influences, or something scripted? How will the world evolve if I do nothing?

Can I affect the entire world or just this one region? Can other regions oppose me or follow me? Can I go against myself in another life (assuming another identity years later)?

If you don't break it down into what-ifs, you'll be chasing a concept that may be far beyond your reach. You might want to bounce your ideas off writers and not developers, however.

Or you could even make it a deck-building kinda game, where part of the skill is in arranging your deck so that no matter how it's shuffled, you always have reasonable options. Kinda like playing Magic or Pokemon TCG or w/e

it's actually not random at all and the key problem of quantum mechanics is that you cannot measure things at the smallest scales because to measure them is to interact with the system, which is to change the system, which is to absolutely ruin any notion of knowing what the fuck was going on before you came by kicking all the particles around like you're a big man

it's a metaphysical problem rather than one of "normal" physics

a good analogy from heisenberg's "Physics and Philosophy" is that it's like taking a ruler to something; to measure an object with a ruler, you are likely to touch the object. the ruler has been effectively added to the object. we just don't care at that sort of human-appreciable scale because the ruler doesn't have that much of an effect on the object being measured. but it would be dishonest to say you haven't moved the object slightly, that the weak forces of the ruler and the object aren't interacting, etc. for example, if you press a ruler to a page, you'll bend or scrape the page a bit. it's not a big enough change to care about, but it is large enough to be appreciable

however, in quantum physics, to measure the position or speed or whatever of the smallest particles/measures of energy, you can't get that information except by changing the system and recording subsequent changes. quantum physics is entirely deterministic, it's just that you can't figure out a lot of information of what was going on before you started fucking around with lasers and shit tryna act like you know what's hood

I actually got quite a lot of dev done yesterday/the day before while making the videos.

My shit connection means I have a good couple of hours of dev time per video to dev.

Dev on Vampire of the Sands done in that time:
* Added a stamina bar
* Changed tumble to be stamina based
* Changed tumble to be instant rather than have a wait (which was bumming players out)
* Changed treasure chets to consolidate stacked items of the same type to lower player keypresses needed
* Added auto-pickup (and relevant menu settings) for players who don't want to click all the time
* Made the dash when using a sword make you invinsible for a short period
* Fixed a slew of graphics bugs I created when fixing my multiple-resolution support

As you can see, my code for having my zombies follow my player is absolutely horrendous.
Any advice on how to make it better?

At the moment they just shake between +1 and -1 of whatever the player coords are, and the zombies all eventually merge into a single spot if they are going the same speed.

Just so you know, an attack like that isn't entirely unsuited to a spear. They're usually depicted as thrusting weapons, but spears could also be used as decent long-range slashing weapons, hence why they have a blade on the end instead of just being a pointy stick.

Edit again.
I moved the initial frame so the right leg matches up with where I think it is under the cloak, so it doesn't look like his legs move or slide around when attacking.

You can have a lot of effect by simply changing how a character is placed when they attack. I think this gives the windup more emphasis and makes the character more balanced.

If you could ban ONE gameplay mechanic from ALL video games forever, what would it be? I will make sure not to include this mechanic in my game.

I pick RNG. Almost all forms of RNG do not belong in video games. Fuck randomized loot drops, fuck random damage, fuck random chance of hitting a target even though I already hit them. RNG should only be used in fighting games where you pick a random stage (like SF4 where stages are just for show, not like DOA5 where the level attacks you or gives one player an advantage randomly), that's it. Randomized procedural generation for noncompetitive games like Minecraft that let you fuck around with shit, sure I can deal with that too. But nothing important should ever be calculated randomly. Competitive games that have RNG are not competitive. Fuck having to form strategies around RNG. That's gambling. You can form strategies around gambling too but its still gambling. Fuck having to spend 10 billion hours farming some asshole at the end of a level for a 'chance' at getting some loot. Next time you guys go to work, ask your employer to make your pay randomized, so that every 4 hours you work he/she will flip a coin to see if you get paid for those hours or not. Ask an NBA player to roll dice to see if his last shot count every time he makes a basket. What bullshit. Everyone's adding slot machines and randomized loot to their games. that is a very flat buckler, but it could be excused as a style thing. Your buckler also maybe is a bit large compared to your sword.

the sword looks alright. I'm not really sure if it is intended to be a one handed sword or a long sword. If the former, the handle is a bit long. If the latter, the quillons are a bit short.

The low amount of distal taper makes the blade look heavy which there is nothing wrong with at all if that was intentional. It makes it seem like the weapon would be better at slashing than thrusting and many historical swords were this way. Distal tapering came later to shift the point of balance closer to the hilt making the point more nimble, but also providing less mass behind a slash or chop.

Its like really hard to populate a combo box in gtk so I let users just type whatever they want into an edit box, and it uses sscanf(editBoxString,"%dx%d",&width,&height); and then it passes that to SDL.

But if edtBoxString is null or less than 7 characters then it just defaults to 1280x720.

So if I had a goblin, it might be { goblin: [DATA] } and then I'd read it in to an Entity object, but if I wanted to make new Entities on the fly, based off how many are defined in the data file, I would need some sort of object list or vector. So if I had Goblins and Orcs, I might have Entities[0] refer to the Goblin entity, and Entities[1] refer to Orcs.

Well yes, it does that. I'm assuming your 'differently scaled objects' are basically different meshes of different size. If you take the same mesh and just scale in via the transform, the texture tiling should not change at all, of course the texture will look upscaled. If you want to keep the texture resolution the same, that's possible too, though I personally don't know how to set it up. That however requires a seamless texture, otherwise you get the problem you are facing.

here's how i would do it
instead of making a rope object I'd just put the player character in a swinging mode

player's position is set by angle to and distance from anchor
pressing left/right applies a direct angular velocity
gravity is a constant angular acceleration toward the bottom of the circle
leaving the swinging state is just converting the angular velocity back into axis velocities

unrealistic but simple enough as a first pass

I have the top part working, theres a chatlog list that separates strings based on a length into lines. Then I have a method that prints the lines in a specific location based on how many lines I want to print selecting the lines from the list index creating a psuedo chatbox.

The top part of the box works, it doesn't let the user scroll past the first line. But the bottom lets the user scroll passed the last line and inputs it into the print method which makes the box increase in size.

Idk if my ideas are just not new or anything (I have a bias for liking rpg/simulation games) but I never lack for ideas generally.

I think its due to playing a lot of games and reading a lot of books.

I don't just mean video games.
Play card games, play tag, play board games, the good ones and the bad ones, find people also interested in game design that you can talk too while playing all these games. Reading books/watching anime/watching shows or really anything that inspires you can be a very good source of inspiration for games and mechanics.

I definitely never start with "what if I made x game but did x instead" its much more "I want to make a game that portrays x experience, what mechanics do that?".

The designer has to build from the mechanics forward but if you start with a "theme/experience" you want the user to have in the end then the mechanics tend to become very clear.

Like, despite what people may say about EVE onlines skill system, a good reason they made it the way it is is because it keeps players from being able to do everything in the game. It forces the player into a role, it makes you need other players, and they did things like make it so you cant change your name facilitate that. More than anything EVE Online is about IDENTIFY.

That's what a core design concept is imo.

to be honest with you, a first person "touch the correct buttons in the correct order" kind of puzzle game is pretty much the one thing Source is really good at. As soon as you remove combat, you remove the need for AI, and if it's a tomb, there won't be other characters, really; leaving just level construction and puzzle design.

It's the kind of game you could build pretty much just with Hammer, base source entities, and maybe a texture artist to avoid looking like a dumpy HL2 mod.

Because a good fantasy might make for poor gameplay and the novelty of having your fantasy fulfilled might fade far more quickly than the joy of playing a well-crafted game.

like with the spells, instead of thinking "this will make for bad inventory management to have 99 different types of Fireball", axe 98 of the fireball variants and have a shorter spell list but with more diversity between the spells
