just drop it and start a new project. You have obviously lost all motivation for that game, no reason to let it suffer like an injured dog. Just close the window, delete the project, and start a new. Just do this a lot, and don't ever stop devving, eventually you'll finish a gamesurely.

There's nothing to get used to here if you're not going to get any reply when you post progress. That was supposed to be the whole point of an amateur game development general.
I'm just going to get a list of all the real devs and follow them in their own website or tumblr.

Listen bud, everyone here can tell your a millennial. Just because you post progress doesnt guarantee replies. While your progress may mean a lot to YOU, you have to also remember that most people will not see it as that important. In all likely hood, your progress isn't even what most people here consider to be 'progress'. Getting up in the morning and opening an IDE isnt progress. You have to make it interesting for people, or they are not going to reply. The reason people reply to the shitposters is because usually the stuff they most is outlandish and dramatic, which is interesting to humans, just look at things like tabloids. You have to bring something to the table with your shit, or people simply wont care. Go ahead and post your progress. Having a webm helps, cause people like to see stuff in action. But posting a picture of some enemy design you made or some new art work that looks like shite probably isn't going to get you very far. Think with your head man. Ask yourself, what do the people, the consumer of my media, want to see? And try to deliver that. You don't have to change your game concept to fit popular opinion, but you gotta make it something that the average person here will care enough about to take the time out of THEIR day to reply to it. No one is entitled to replies.

Could anyone briefly say if an idea I had is good or bad? I'm actually serious about it -- I've been learning C++ for this reason.
It's essentially: you're born in 10000 BCE, you're visited by the last human alive who is suffering from the end of the Universe (entropy), and he gives you a pill that makes you immune to aging (not violence or other death).
You then can either influence humanity from the shadows, assuming fake identities every lifetime, or you can become a world leader and dictator. If you become famous but don't "die" normally, a leader would get suspicious and you'd be on the operating table.
You can influence:
--religion
--government
--technology
--science and medicine
--culture and the arts
--weaponry and war
once per 5 years. You could max out religion in the early BCs and be a prophet and later use that power to enact a second coming, or you could invent things early on and set humanity forward.
The thing is that there are certain "milestone conditions" -- you can't get funds for your entropy research if you're not skilled in physics and at least a little influential in government.
The win condition is you have to have a sustainable amount of entropy production that will last humans a trillion years.
Heavily based on The Final Question. It'd be in the rough style of Plague, Inc.

To make it a game idea you have to define terms you use, such as:
>assuming fake identities, become this that

>max out religion
is it a stat? what actions cause it to change, what other stats are there
>die
how do things that cause your death happen, random encounters while you're managing your stats?
>It'd be in the rough style of Plague, Inc.

>>122507051
srs ansr
It sounds nice for a simulation game, but you might want to break it down some more. Like, what is Entropy? How do I get it? What's the limit? Can I increase that limit? What can I use it on?
What are the consequences of doing X as opposed to Y? Can I advance this world beyond what was established in the real world? Can I introduce science in an era where science was considered witchcraft? Can I prevent the discovery of something that changes the world?
Will the world continue to move when I'm "dead"? How will the world continue? Will it be based on RNG, my influences, or something scripted? How will the world evolve if I do nothing?
Can I affect the entire world or just this one region? Can other regions oppose me or follow me? Can I go against myself in another life (assuming another identity years later)?
If you don't break it down into what-ifs, you'll be chasing a concept that may be far beyond your reach. You might want to bounce your ideas off writers and not developers, however.

No facebook if you're going to put your real name out there, make sure you're not listed on whitepages or other listing sites, if you're going to have a youtube clean up your google+ settings so people can't view your posts, friends in your circles, things like that. Never photograph your face or your home or property nearby you and if you do do not post it on 4chan unless you're absolutely sure you know what you're doing. Don't befriend or be social with family members on your youtube either, don't let them comment on your stuff for example. You have to be your own separate entity.

With a big enough hand size, you could probably keep it reasonably fair.
Or you could even make it a deck-building kinda game, where part of the skill is in arranging your deck so that no matter how it's shuffled, you always have reasonable options. Kinda like playing Magic or Pokemon TCG or w/e
>>122518964
RNG will affect the final outcome somewhat, but if you plan different sequences of cards depending on what your opponent does, and take calculated risks which will require a certain card to be drawn, the better player will win the majority of the time.

it's actually not random at all and the key problem of quantum mechanics is that you cannot measure things at the smallest scales because to measure them is to interact with the system, which is to change the system, which is to absolutely ruin any notion of knowing what the fuck was going on before you came by kicking all the particles around like you're a big man
it's a metaphysical problem rather than one of "normal" physics
a good analogy from heisenberg's "Physics and Philosophy" is that it's like taking a ruler to something; to measure an object with a ruler, you are likely to touch the object. the ruler has been effectively added to the object. we just don't care at that sort of human-appreciable scale because the ruler doesn't have that much of an effect on the object being measured. but it would be dishonest to say you haven't moved the object slightly, that the weak forces of the ruler and the object aren't interacting, etc. for example, if you press a ruler to a page, you'll bend or scrape the page a bit. it's not a big enough change to care about, but it is large enough to be appreciable
however, in quantum physics, to measure the position or speed or whatever of the smallest particles/measures of energy, you can't get that information except by changing the system and recording subsequent changes. quantum physics is entirely deterministic, it's just that you can't figure out a lot of information of what was going on before you started fucking around with lasers and shit tryna act like you know what's hood
How about that game dev huh

Do like Spelunky does: Slap hand-made chunks together to craft the levels. Everything will flow better and feel more intentional, while still being fresh between playthroughs.
You can either have pieces that will always fit together (harder in that you have to acertain that by hand)
OR
Have pieces and then punch holes connecting them when you "generate" the map (slightly harder to code).

* Added a stamina bar
* Changed tumble to be stamina based
* Changed tumble to be instant rather than have a wait (which was bumming players out)
* Changed treasure chets to consolidate stacked items of the same type to lower player keypresses needed
* Added auto-pickup (and relevant menu settings) for players who don't want to click all the time
* Made the dash when using a sword make you invinsible for a short period

* Monsters now have tells rather than just fucking your shit

>>122536957
Dithering
Back to Last Page> Full Glossary>
Definition: Dithering scatters different colored pixels in an image to make it appear as though there are intermediate colors in images with a limited color palette. (Continued below...)
Your operating system will automatically dither images when your display settings are set to 256 colors or less. Dithering is often used to reduce banding in GIFs with graduated color transitions. Most software provides options that let you control the appearance of the scattered pixels; for example, the dithering can be a rigid pattern, random noise, or diffusion. Keep in mind that dithering often increases the file size of an image, but in many cases the improved appearance is worth the trade-off. Below are several examples of different types of dithering. The last example is is not dithered. Notice the changes in file size for the various types of dithering.

Just so you know, an attack like that isn't entirely unsuited to a spear. They're usually depicted as thrusting weapons, but spears could also be used as decent long-range slashing weapons, hence why they have a blade on the end instead of just being a pointy stick.

These are good tips but I fucking hate his "style". It looks so busy and inorganic.
>>122542338
Edit again.
I moved the initial frame so the right leg matches up with where I think it is under the cloak, so it doesn't look like his legs move or slide around when attacking.
You can have a lot of effect by simply changing how a character is placed when they attack. I think this gives the windup more emphasis and makes the character more balanced.

i like the animation, its snappy and right to the point
the right arm is longer than the left arm
there is a pixel missing on the right leg
there is no highlights, but because outlines took so much space i guess its ok
the robe shading is alright, you could use more shading at the center so it gives illusion that its darker when its closer to the back
overall not bad for programmer art
AGDG...
If you could ban ONE gameplay mechanic from ALL video games forever, what would it be? I will make sure not to include this mechanic in my game.I pick RNG. Almost all forms of RNG do not belong in video games. Fuck randomized loot drops, fuck random damage, fuck random chance of hitting a target even though I already hit them. RNG should only be used in fighting games where you pick a random stage (like SF4 where stages are just for show, not like DOA5 where the level attacks you or gives one player an advantage randomly), that's it. Randomized procedural generation for noncompetitive games like Minecraft that let you fuck around with shit, sure I can deal with that too. But nothing important should ever be calculated randomly. Competitive games that have RNG are not competitive. Fuck having to form strategies around RNG. That's gambling. You can form strategies around gambling too but its still gambling. Fuck having to spend 10 billion hours farming some asshole at the end of a level for a 'chance' at getting some loot. Next time you guys go to work, ask your employer to make your pay randomized, so that every 4 hours you work he/she will flip a coin to see if you get paid for those hours or not. Ask an NBA player to roll dice to see if his last shot count every time he makes a basket. What bullshit. Everyone's adding slot machines and randomized loot to their games. Fucking Halo 5 loot drops, fuck off, 343.

it's never well done, you can't make good game design if you don't know how the player will reach the room.
It's almost always done to stuff a nothing game with endless content.

shading and outlines are good but the palette is overwhelming
Lava planets, which looks cooler - crusty or molten poles?
>>122542738
Alright, so what if instead of random chance, loot drops were instead determined by a large amount of very obscure and unrelated conditions that must be fulfilled?
It wouldn't be "random."
>>122543140

>Someone doesn't understand how probability distributions and averages work
>>122543140

>>122542968
Do you think incorporating more bigger blocks would redeem it? 32x32 and 48x48 alongside the 16x16?
Also, the clash in style I hope mostly refers to all the placeholdery objects and not the tileset itself?
>>122542984
This is the first area, outdoors, before you enter the structure in which the majority of the game will take place, which will in part be pretty high tech and alien, but it'll keep a pretty vibrant palette and the square aesthetics.
>>122543027
Overwhelming as in oversaturated?
>>122542612
I don't know how to feel about it.
My first impression is that it's good, definitely 'reasonable'.
I can tell that you want it to look 'full' without making it confusing on the eyes by making the middle-ground incredibly saturated, but it kind of aches.
Have you tried using some softer/warmer colours?
My only criticism is that the palette and cubic style reminds me too much of Fez and Bit.Trip.
just tried pixel art for the first time after doing 2d and 3d for a while
its even harder, you guys are nuts
>>122542875
yeah btw this
>>122543140
is procedurally generated. Your whole argument is "some idiots used it and fucked up so its bad", while in reality there are game genres (mainly roguelikes) that simply wouldn't work without it, not to mention the enormous time and money it can save as opposed to hiring hundreds of artists to create all the content by hand. Also, many games have such huge worlds (TES, Reset Button, EvE Online..) that storing all the data conventionally simply isn't an option.
>>122543218
i'm okay with this. It would be annoying for the first guy playing the game sure, but at least it's not random. If someone could figure out the exact procedure for getting that drop and post it online so that no one else needs to suffer, it's all good.

Thanks, and yeah honestly I'm pretty terrible with palettes. I threw one together when I started drawing tiles and it's been growing/changing a bit since.
I'll definitely try toning down the colors a bit and see if I like it.
And yeah, the Fez comparison probably cannot be helped.
Hello agdg, I am alive and well, just working on heavy grad stuff until Christmas. Not gonna post progress but I have a quote that reminded me of you.
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan Press On! has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” - Calvin Coolidge
You can do it. Just keep going.
>>122543914

>>122543874

Assume that the conditions are so many and so obscure and unrelated that the exact formula will almost certainly never be found without reading the source code.

>>122545694
that is a very flat buckler, but it could be excused as a style thing. Your buckler also maybe is a bit large compared to your sword.
the round bulge in the center of many bucklers provided room for the fingers and knuckles of the person gripping the handle
the sword looks alright. I'm not really sure if it is intended to be a one handed sword or a long sword. If the former, the handle is a bit long. If the latter, the quillons are a bit short.
The low amount of distal taper makes the blade look heavy which there is nothing wrong with at all if that was intentional. It makes it seem like the weapon would be better at slashing than thrusting and many historical swords were this way. Distal tapering came later to shift the point of balance closer to the hilt making the point more nimble, but also providing less mass behind a slash or chop.

some states have their own gambling laws and there's a lot of lobbying done by traditional gambling such as horse racing to keep these things legal. the thing is, on a federal level, online gambling is banned. ONLINE GAMBLING. if daily fantasy is classified as ONLINE gambling, it will be banned on a federal level and states will have to pass laws if they wish to allow it state-wide, which is a process that can take years and will cost daily fantasy platforms millions of dollars because they'll have to bribe a lot of people.
if you remember the poker boom, this is exactly what happened to it. rich vegas billionaires lobbied against online poker because they feared for the well-being of their casinos. then handling transactions suddenly became illegal and people lost a ton of money because cashing out would suddenly not work anymore.

I also have a question to you guys. How would unlockable characters work in a game like this? The damage they do would be the same/slightly different.
How do you guys load object/character data from files? I am planing to use some sort of XML or JSON like mark up which I can read from my game.
Also, once you have a parser, how do you store the data in the game? My first thought was to have a large vector or something, and read data from the data file into that vector, and then each object will be objects[1] ect, but this seems like it would be a mess.
please help

Unity lerps animations differently depending on your model's FPS in Blender render settings
This is at 60FPS (will post 10FPS shortly)

There's libraries that will deserialize YAML/JSON/XML for you, you don't need to write it yourself. I have no idea what data you're planning to store in those files so I obviously can't help you with the implementation of the data structures.

R-really?
Good morning agdg. Current checklist.
+Mech Internal Systems
-wiring (controls)
need to design system for routing the wiring for controls from an appendage to the mechs computer (cerebral core? working title) I should look up what tank/jet computers are referred to as.
-wiring (power)
making a system where each part consumes power when it does things to operate and that power needs to be routed along a path to the mechs generator/power storage. (very early stage because I don't currently have any mech actions defined so I'll have to make fake actions just for testing purposes.)
-servos
Each appendage will have servos that can handle a certain amount of stress and weight.
+Start Menu
-test option so I can go to what I'm currently testing.
+Mech UI
-diagnostics log
This will act as an output for most things I'm testing right now. I have methods for putting boxes places so I can test layouts.
Time to dev for like 9 hours until work.
>>122560686
Im thinking creature data. So things like their stats, which sprite they use, drops, that sort of thing.
So if I had a goblin, it might be { goblin: [DATA] } and then I'd read it in to an Entity object, but if I wanted to make new Entities on the fly, based off how many are defined in the data file, I would need some sort of object list or vector. So if I had Goblins and Orcs, I might have Entities[0] refer to the Goblin entity, and Entities[1] refer to Orcs.
I guess what I'm asking is, is this a good way of doing it?

>>122570094
I will do that because my game is very small and shitty, but according to the community, that prevents it from batching the textures
>>122569961
In UE4 there's a material node called Object Scale which can be used to account for that, maybe there's an equivalent in Unity
>>122570113
in older versions you could spiral completely out of control and get a billion powerups
every powerup used to scale linearly but that's no longer the case
>>122570275
Well yes, it does that. I'm assuming your 'differently scaled objects' are basically different meshes of different size. If you take the same mesh and just scale in via the transform, the texture tiling should not change at all, of course the texture will look upscaled. If you want to keep the texture resolution the same, that's possible too, though I personally don't know how to set it up. That however requires a seamless texture, otherwise you get the problem you are facing.

kek, i do what i want 8-)
Fuck I wish I wasn't so bad at maths. I've been trying to fix this shit for like 40 mins.
>>122571848
here's how i would do it
instead of making a rope object I'd just put the player character in a swinging mode
player's position is set by angle to and distance from anchor
pressing left/right applies a direct angular velocity
gravity is a constant angular acceleration toward the bottom of the circle
leaving the swinging state is just converting the angular velocity back into axis velocities
unrealistic but simple enough as a first pass
Where have all the good pixel artists gone?
Is free unity lightning this bad, or am I doing something wrong? The spotlight circle doesn't even appear, it just iluminates the whole textures.
>>122572768
and what do you use to represent the rope? You can't have your character swing in empty air.
Updated my tutorial hints from the feedback yesterday, added colours, symbols and the option to switch between brands.
Probably not the most productive use of time but I learned how to make fonts so that's good.
>>122572935
if it's 2d, just use some static shit. it's not that hard. If you want some hyper-realistic rope, good luck
>>122572935
just draw one from the PC to the anchor
I don't see the problem
>>122572740

I have the top part working, theres a chatlog list that separates strings based on a length into lines. Then I have a method that prints the lines in a specific location based on how many lines I want to print selecting the lines from the list index creating a psuedo chatbox.
The top part of the box works, it doesn't let the user scroll past the first line. But the bottom lets the user scroll passed the last line and inputs it into the print method which makes the box increase in size.

Idk if my ideas are just not new or anything (I have a bias for liking rpg/simulation games) but I never lack for ideas generally.
I think its due to playing a lot of games and reading a lot of books.
I don't just mean video games.
Play card games, play tag, play board games, the good ones and the bad ones, find people also interested in game design that you can talk too while playing all these games. Reading books/watching anime/watching shows or really anything that inspires you can be a very good source of inspiration for games and mechanics.
I definitely never start with "what if I made x game but did x instead" its much more "I want to make a game that portrays x experience, what mechanics do that?".
The designer has to build from the mechanics forward but if you start with a "theme/experience" you want the user to have in the end then the mechanics tend to become very clear.
Like, despite what people may say about EVE onlines skill system, a good reason they made it the way it is is because it keeps players from being able to do everything in the game. It forces the player into a role, it makes you need other players, and they did things like make it so you cant change your name facilitate that. More than anything EVE Online is about IDENTIFY.
That's what a core design concept is imo.

to be honest with you, a first person "touch the correct buttons in the correct order" kind of puzzle game is pretty much the one thing Source is really good at. As soon as you remove combat, you remove the need for AI, and if it's a tomb, there won't be other characters, really; leaving just level construction and puzzle design.
It's the kind of game you could build pretty much just with Hammer, base source entities, and maybe a texture artist to avoid looking like a dumpy HL2 mod.

So you two actually started to make the game?
Josh Sawyer once wrote that he gave Pillars of Eternity wizards a lot of spells because having a lot of different spells is part of the fantasy of playing a wizard. This is despite of the fact that he thought that having fewer spells would work better. Do you agree with this line of reasoning? Is it important to keep the player's fantasy in mind when designing something aimed at fulfilling it? Even at the cost of gameplay?

yes and I don't know how you could write that sentence and think "eh fuck the player's fantasy, CLEARLY they want to play something that does not fulfill their wishes at all"
>>122579334
>yes and I don't know how you could write that sentence and think "eh fuck the player's fantasy, CLEARLY they want to play something that does not fulfill their wishes at all"
Because a good fantasy might make for poor gameplay and the novelty of having your fantasy fulfilled might fade far more quickly than the joy of playing a well-crafted game.
>>122579513
the key is to modify the gameplay to fit the fantasy and not the other way around
like with the spells, instead of thinking "this will make for bad inventory management to have 99 different types of Fireball", axe 98 of the fireball variants and have a shorter spell list but with more diversity between the spells
ME2 and 3 did this, instead of having hundreds of guns that just clog up your menus, there are fewer guns but each of them is more distinct even within a single class

>>122579797
In ME1, the bazillion identical guns also made the Geth weapons more exciting to get. Since they behaved differently.
I agree ME2 did it better. Even if super explosive sniper rounds was cool.
>>122579797
PoE's spells are fairly diverse. Sawyer just thinks that giving a single character too many options makes the game unnecessarily complex without much benefit.

Do you have to do this every thread? Chromium exists.

Why do you guys say mixels? Seriously, it's not a standard term, and you're just trying to push it hard. Say scaled sprites, say mixed pixel sizes, say fucking anything that doesn't make you sound like you just walked in here from reddit to spout your stupid aggy daggy memes.

I was gonna say "Curse", thinking it was all puzzles, but then I remember it does have combat.
Nonetheless:

But yeah, for that sorta thing, better of making a mod than an actual game. Source makes it fairly easy to do that, which maybe why it gets so much hate. (Despite being the engine behind three of the top five games of all time.)
