Is there a general consensus on ship classification on/egg/ ? I saw this chart on the keens forums, what do you guys think?
>>

those capital ship sizes are just way too impractical, especially with only vanilla weapons.

So is there a purpose to playing space engineers yet? I've ignored it for some huge undetermined amount of time since it never had a point. I've got a few friends with it who are more interested than me but with the new update that I listened to one friend play I'm wondering if I can put time into it or I'll realize I'm better off playing some game with a story or reason at least

finally done, 20 nucannons on 4x0.50 beltloaders, no idea how many x7 missiles, 2x sticky flare arrays, 2 LAMS towers with 9 LAMS each, Heat decoys, and soupy secret subspawn that goes with it. And too many shields

it floats without airpumps too, so no sinking.

only time it's lost so far is a turret shot into the back of another turret and started a chain reaction turning it into a huge crater. Otherwise, it's taken on 2 bulwarks at once and barely dented before it had missiles fitted.

Any ideas what to fight it against that is a lot stronger?

I get roughly 30-ish fps on planets, which is tolerable considering they've just recently been released, 40-60 in space, depending on how much shit I've built and how far away from said shit I am.
Needless to say, there's a lot of room for improvement, but its tolerable thanks to mods and constant additions, at least for me.

Using 500 right now, tried 1000 yesterday and found that even using Rider's high powered afterburners, I'd decelerate too slow on approach to blanads and crater.
500 cuts down the abysmally sluggish climb to orbit, while still keeping you slow enough that you can react to oncoming objects and prevent cratering or CLANG.
>>
>>122273490
Isn't orbital velocity for a spengie planet like, just a little bit above 1km/s? Would be possible to "orbit" it with the ship staying in atmosphere all the way through.
>>
>>122273671
Well, orbit in the sense that I don't have to put up with the planetary gravity field.
I'd assume you can hold position in the atmosphere as long as you have fuel for hydrogens, or power for an ungodly number of normal thrusters.
My ships can do it just fine, but I use vastly stronger thrusters that would overload a stock ship instantly, along with higher output reactors and a lot of power storage, so I have no trouble staying aloft with an occasional burst from the main thruster, or with dampers turned on.
>>
>>122274242
Real-life definition of orbit is what I'm talking about. An object moving at 770 m/s would achieve a low orbit around a planet with gravity of 1g and raidus of 60km, and with SPengies' atmosphere providing no drag at all, "low orbit" might as well mean "high enough not to hit any mountains". It would be actually possible to do this shit on a craft with atmospheric thrusters only.

Monday, this and more.
>>
>>122274420
No argument there.
Think drag will ever be added?
It would be neat but I'd prefer Keen focus on other things for now.
>>
>>122275047
One can only hope. Actual drag and reentry mechnanics combined with an increased speed limit would be wonderful

Morning. Warbros server here.

So, in theory, Warbros would be doing fine. It has been doing quite alright in the days and weeks leading up to planets. The problem is, it can't do fine anymore, and neither can many other servers. We have sensors being cheeky (0.01) simu speed because they trigger 10000 times a second, but we "dealt" with that by removing sensors from the block list, in the true Keen way.

Yet, we have debris not being removed and floating item limit not working. Drilling causes floating rocks. People need to mine. There is nothing I can do about it. Space Master's rash removal only removes trash my client can "see", and with the recent updates, client only sees what's around him, server handles the rest.

To increase insult to injury, interacting with a planet's surface and other player/ship voxel interaction seem to also produce issues. The physics calculations are abosolutely mental. There is nothing I can do here, either. Keen's part.

I just took the serbian down for maintenance. Lemme see where we are and then I shall boot 'er up again. Pic related is the SEToolBox of the game world. This is what I consider "mild". We had more. It's still shitting up the park.
>>
>>122276439
It's booting back up.

>tfw space elevator is barely over the mountains and is already manifesting CLANG

I feel the warp overtaking me... it is a good pain.

Starting to think I might not bother with the elevator car until I can think up an efficient enough solution that it's worth it, if I end up slapping Atmos and Ions in it I might as well just use a shuttle. Transfer of material seems to be working well though.

Tried slapping a bunch of Grav Gens on the outside of the elevator since, as you could probably guess, the number of solar panels is making a fucking crazy amount of power but for some reason they keep bugging out and not emitting fields despite having plenty of power, only one in five or so are working.
>>
>>122276439
I've heard that antennas and rotors are causing other servers to crash no idea if you have them disabled already.

Also I hope nobody has timer blocks set to 1 second loops because that kills the server as well.
>>
>>122272917

It's ugly and keencoded to fuck due to copy-pasting 3.5 KM sections, but I have the first (That I've seen) Space Elevator. Well, for cargo anyways. Fuck setting up a working elevator car, I'm too dumb for that and respawning is faster anyway.

While accessing storages on the surface works perfectly, for whatever reason if I connect to the conveyor system via connector it doesn't seem to connect to anything but the solar panels (Of which theres a fuckload, with batteries on it supplies a few GW of power)

>>122281403
Yeah that was the plan to get from about the halfway point using an artificial mass and a grav gen, but by the time that can even kick in you'd have just jetted over halfway up anyways. Until further notice my elevator is just a giant ass solar farm with respawns at the top and bottom, but transferring shit from surface to low grav works great.

What would be the point of all the cut-out parts, and why the leaf tip?
If it's built for ramming as the name sorta suggests, why have the wide blade-shaped hull instead of just a long spar with a heavily re-enforced barb or explosive warhead?
Nothing much to say about the outline, most of my ships I build from the guts outward instead of trying to make the guts fit into a particular hull shape, and they all follow a basic design philosophy.

Life support is contained in a spar protruding from the slenderest part of the ship, focused fire would be more likely to snap it off.

Fighter hanger doesn't need those cutouts between the engineering section and the bridge section, merging the two together will reduce distinct structures that can be singled out for attack.
>Bridge
Nothing much to say besides that it could be moved back and merged with the front of the combat hangars.

It's a life boat, not life support. If everything's going really tits up, you haul ass to the rear of the ship and snap it off. It'll have the ability to survive on its own without needing to dock or anything (storage, hydrogen, oxygen, industry) as well as landing gear and a small mining ship or two docked within, so you can land on a planet and have a reasonable chance of surviving.

I was keeping the cutoffs since that's what the Needleship has, though mine aren't nearly the same shape or size (made them bigger for ease of docking). What I could alternatively do is make the current fighter hangar be the one for larger corvettes, ie big 'small' ships, or large cargo craft.

Yeah, I can see your point. Don't want a kamikaze runner to take out the bridge.

There's gonna be a shitload of turrets all around the ship, mostly designed for anti-fighter duty, with a few heavier things for anti-frigate. It's the kind of ship you don't send unescorted, so it won't be massively armed.
>>
>>122290581
Oh I get it!
Also, there's a very vanilla armor block mod that offers sloped armor blocks in 4, 5, and 6 block lengths that might help you get that slender tail.
Its called Warbros Modlabs Long Ramps.
>>
>>122291272
Yeah, I just finished adding all the ramps with those, so much better than the crappy vanilla blocks.

Also, since it's... fucking massive (910 meters long), you think I should put a tram in it? I'm concerned it'd... you know, explode spectacularly if anything moved.
>>
I don't understand the sphere room of the jetpack tutorial

So, now that planets are here, what do you want to see in future updates of SE?

>OPTIMIZATION
>asteroids and NPC ships in planet starts
Will come in the future but I'm gonna write it here anyway.
>wings or lift simulation
Even if they are as simple as in robokek, some kind of lift surfaces would be great.
>neutral NPCs
Some kind of trading ships that don't automatically attack you. Instead you can just trade ressources with them. Or attack them anyway and they'll fight back.
>spider eggs
>enemy AI space engineers
It just feels so lifeless. Just put one engineer on each ship in the cockpit. If you kill him the ship just drifts uncontrollable, but he'll fight back if you try to board it.
>multiplayer fix
In the stream they hinted it'll be here soon.
>>
>>122294232
From what I understood they lost tons of players for some reason. If someone can tell me why please do.

Then they decided to lock the MOBA mode behind a giant levelwall, so I have no intentions of coming back.

Warbros Server here, copying from least ded.

Current server status: Up, but occasionally shaky.

To join up with us when planets, there's some prep work to be done. First of all, you need to get into the group. To do so, message Ced23Ric on Steam. This guy: http://steamcommunity.com/id/ced23ric

Also, to save yourself some loadtime, preload our mods.
You can subscribe the to collection here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=375603526
There is a preload world (offline, creative) which you should start once to prod all mods to download: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=529237944
You can also use that for offline building, blueprinting and then building on the serbian later. I don't care if you want this server to be vanila, it won't be. It's a shitload of mods, but they have been weighted and tested and they work. Half of them are tweaks and visual shit (no beacon glare, for example) anyway.

You will be invited to a group called "Warbros Space Engineers". That group works as a whitelist. Only people in that group will be able to join the server. That is so I can control better who has access and we don't get unwashed pubbies.

Quick rule overview:
- Don't be a dick.
- No megalomanic superbuilds, use offine creative for that.
- No grid spam, every ship/thing you build is a calculated physics object that eats performance. So, no drone swarms, eh?
- PvP is opt-in between two (or more) consenting parties. No ifs, no butts.
- Only one drill per player. Take the Large Ship Earthbreaker, it's a good drill. Why? Drilling kills the game for everyone. Simu speed drops like a white city girl taking a moonshine shot down South.
- Talk to me if you have issues. Don't just shitpost on /egg/, talk to me. I'll see what I can do.

Some general stuff:
- You are encouraged to make your own faction. Warbros will have one, auto-accepting peace treaties. You can apply to join us, but if you're not into building shit together and sperging out on TS3, this might not be for you. Buddy up with someone, make things happen.
- Warbros faction will not hold your hand. We'll hep if you are conveniently close and can spare the time/resources, though.
- The server will have some QoL addons, such as the helmet mod. Read the description and understand it. Protip: Turn of the glass reflection, set the shadow scale so there is no shadow and deactivate delayed movement.
- Another is Chat History. Type /ch to see the last 50 messages typed in /global. Might help with catching up.
- Also, Build Info, which gives you information about blocks you're placng. Turn it on/off with /buildinfo in /global chat.
- There's only one respawn ship, the Sparky. It has all you need to survive, some mats, beacon, solars, nuke reactor, refinery/assembler. Spawn in one of those and set out to meet the cold void. Keep in mind that Sparkies cannot land on planets because lol thrust.
- There will not be a Starter Zone for new players, unless you make and maintain one. We won't.
- Every time I log off, I will make a copy of the server save. The server is set to autosave every 30 minutes. Recovery of items might be tricky. Make blueprints of your shit - Ctrl+B.

You might want to grab the Warbros UI, too. See through menus and generally improved visibility and an increased G Menu size.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=375575227
I run it with the yellow font pack.

Wish you were here.

Last word: Offline raidfags, pls go. You are butts.

Honestly, I'd probably play RC if it was pre plasma state team death match , barring global optimizations and bug fixing.

All the new blocks included ctf, with surface damage model and limited range for plasma, low smg range, damage drop off for rails and clouds back would be nice too, I guess. And matchmaking.

Maybe then we'll get some team work going on, with bombers, fighters, recon chairs, support, anti air and breakthrough land.

Since the start of this year they've been losing populance to an extent, gaining them back only really when updates happen.
Mech legs came and became extremely meta.

Then Freejam said 'We're removing the damage model. Now if you shoot a bot functional parts can't fall off and your bot getting damaged is only a visual effect. a 1% health bot is just as effective as a 100% health bot."

Everyone went batshit insane.

However, Freejam has now said they'll do a number of things including the removal of hitscan.

There is some hope left.

Did some more work for it. Should I try to keep it circular, or just go with sloping edges? A rounded hull won't look as smooth, though.

Also, the escape pod is gonna be fuckin' huge. How do you guys think I should have the mining ship held in it? should I blunt the end of it and give it an airtight door? Or should I just pack the required resources to build it into the life boat's cargo containers, and have you build it when you get there?

So the main hull, engines (thrusters) and Ventral MAC cannon are finished. I feel like I need a name at this point but I'm not sure what.

I initially thought "Enroaching Dusk" (to parallel Forward Unto Dawn somewhat) but I don't like it that much anymore.

In terms of grav cannon rounds, how effective is a 10 long heavy armour strip with three warheads inside (small ship everything)? I can at least get it to 150m/s as it stands and can feasibly add more grav gens.

Is it possible to set a separate rendering distance for different objects?
If so, couldn't one set the rendering distance for planets to something like a few km?
Provided the game world is sufficiently tiny ("cube only few km larger than planet in each axis" - tiny), this would have marginal effect on gameplay, but give a massive performance improvement.

It uses a piston clock type thing. When the sensor on the piston head detects or loses a small ship (the base of the piston) it triggers a timer, this timer reverses the piston + whatever (reverses legs) and the cycle continues.

A few questions, I'm working on a large ship that can land planetside and also fly back up into space.

My buddies and I are going to make something like mother base on the one icelake on earth, so we figured having a ship that can go anywhere with ample hanger size for refueling would be cool. (like how the heiwa maru refuels diamond dogs helicopters at sea so they cant operate all around the world)

Do you need directional hydrogen thrusters?
I was probably only going to have downward facing ones that then rotate backwards in space (or maybe can be detached and left on like a small satellite)

Does it matter how I setup conveyers?
I've never really made anything beyond manual loaded fighters and drillers, does everything just need to be connected or is there a certain order?

Are atmospheric thrusters worthwhile for moving my large mothership in atmosphere or would ion/hydrogen suffice?

Thanks
>>
>>122325814
>I was probably only going to have downward facing ones that then rotate backwards in space
Thruster physics are shit, don't try this.
>>
>>122325814
You need atmo thrusters to hover and get up.
You need hydrogen to overcome the gravity field.
You need ions outside of the atmosphere.

Short version: Hover with atmo, push with hydrogen, move in space with ions.
>>
>>122325814
If it's connected by conveyors/blocks that use them it's connected. Instant transfer any 'direction' unless you use the special sorter blocks. However some stuff can't go through small ship conveyor parts so try and use large ones wherever possible.
>>
Is it currently better to build a wheeled survey vehicle to scout out ore deposits in Spengies, or aerial vehicles?

All my aircraft that I build in the "Star System" scenario crash shortly after takeoff.
>>
>>122326040
So if I only had hydrogen in one direction as a booster and atmo for all directions until space I'd be fine?

Or do I need directional hydrogen thrusters as well?

>>122326002
So if I had hydrogen boosters that could be shifted from pointing straight down to backwards it might fuck up?

Would I say, be able to use merge block to lock them at a specific angle to fix this?
>>
>>122326940
Using merge blocks would be a good idea.
>>
>>122326940
Merge block VTOL would work.

Thrusters on different grids (rotors) can apply moments and torque that regular thrusters in SE don't and can't be used normally (assign to toolbar or script them to ovverride etc).

>So if I only had hydrogen in one direction as a booster and atmo for all directions until space I'd be fine?
>Or do I need directional hydrogen thrusters as well?
Yeah, you would be fine. Make sure you have a full set of ions, all atmo except for downwards, and hydrogen only upwards.

Alternatively, you can put hydrogen at the butt, facing forwards, use them as speed boosts in atmosphere, and when you want to leave, hover upwards with atmos, then nose up and full force forward.

Full disclosure. Our Lander uses hydrogen as directional thrusters, because we have 3 large hydrogen tanks and 30 oxygen generators.

Okay guys, I'm fucking defeated. I never had such a lust for planets like the Keen forum people, but I admit I wanted them in some deep childish corner of my soul.

I've got no idea what I'm doing. I'm a systems kind of guy, I like building facilities. My buddy likes building drill ships. We cannot, for the life of us, come up with a good planetary miner. Everything is either barely more efficient than hand mining, or falls apart immediately. He built something yesterday on wheels, with pistons and shit, and it was the saddest thing I've ever seen. I'm trying to help because without incoming ore, the station has no need for expansion. It's awful.

Basically: What the fuck am I doing on this planet? There's hardly any ore, ships disintegrate, getting around is awful... Did Keen add planets so we could try our damnedest to never visit them?

pls teach me how to play planet engineers

I know the game's primary focus is supposed to be problem solving and engineering, but I would kill to get some total conversion mod which puts you inside a 4X game like distant worlds. It'd be like mount and blade warband in space, instead of designing ships in 2D you design them in 3D, instead of looking at your empire's planets from afar you can visit them, but most importantly you can be in big battles.

Sounds nigh impossible to implement though since the Ai would be extremely complicated and the game would require a tremendous amount of computing power to run. But a man can dream

The problem with landing gears is the hitbox. They activate on contact and the grids somehow start clipping into eachother.
Connectors allow more space between and have a pull on the other connector.
There was a mod that effectively deleted the landing gear explosions by having a magical flat block with meter-long lock distances. But it was a mod.

Alright so I tried making a merge block VTOL system on a prototype, and the blocks wont fully merge on an advanced rotor

I tried to lower the displacement but all that did was make the thing get stuck and jam, the merge blocks seem to clip into eachother

I tried pistons to fix the gap but it makes the ship gain a retarded velocity when they merge that the thrusters are constantly trying to stop

Is VTOL just not possible yet?

You need a piston to merge it. There is some displacement you cannot offset.

VTOL is not possible. We tried. It created a tear in the space/time continuum, where the isolated grid would move at a certain speed, despite being stationary. Anyone coming close to the immobile moving object would move, too, while being immobile.

Put laser targeter anywhere on gun connection, just have a time or altitude fuse in shell.

I found that timed fuse and whatnot are only useful if you want to make shotgun cannons. Altitude fuses if you want dual purpose surface slug to air shot. with Frag body shells. Adding the laser targeter automatically sets fuse to detonate within target proximity, while doing better work than actual proximity fuses. However guns don't predict enemy movement and have a shit time hitting fast aircraft so added damage or velocity is always better than having a fuse.

This is to be expected from people who never fixed the Ai laser target prioritization or 8 block shells as of yet.

Pretty happy with this shuttle mass is just over 7 tons, a single battery could run full burn for 40 or so minutes which is more than enough to exit orbit (~6minutes), however you do need some hydrogen. It is easy to conserve hydrogen and power once outside orbit since the ion thrusters would be sufficient.

I'd like to make it more compact, shave off some more weight, and improve its power efficiency to increase flight time. Tempted to go hydrogen thrusters only for forward and vertical thrust which seem to be the most important when navigating a planet.

small hydrogen thrusters have ~2x better N/kg ratio and ~5.35x better N/Watt ratio compared to atmoshperic. Looks like the superior choice, downside is I have to worry about hydrogen consumption but Ice seems relatively easy to obtain.

Perhaps I should leave the vertical thrusters as atmospheric, keeping hydrogen thrusters up at full burn opposing gravity would waste too much hydrogen but if the hydrogen fuel in my cargo could last for around 40 minutes to an hour on full burn without adding too much weight then it might be worth it since it is 5x more power efficient at half the weight. refueling very often can become a pain however 2+ hours to refuel hydrogen would be a tolerable target.

I don't mind it, then again only because I can play it at a tolerable 40fps. 120km feels just right, you get a good sense of scale, hopefully with better optimization frame rates will improve significantly. Doesn't matter if I go low or high the frame rate remains the same, seems like my CPU is struggling.

I hope they put an option in there to scale the size up/down instead of dropping it down for everyone.

Hydrogen is unsuitable for lighter-than-air vehicles, considering that vacuum offers better buoyancy for a greatly reduced risk.

Its not just pointy vessels that have smaller drag profile, its vessels that use slopes that have it.
You can make a square box with 4x slopes and it'll still have much lower drag than a beam box.

And that'll be changed

Unsurprisingly, the people asking for "orbital mechanics" haven't figured out how to set up a vessel to perform circular motion at constant velocity.
Here's something from mid-april, back when I fiddled with orbiting drones for warfare. iirc, the orbit radius should be 600m.

Yeah, but that requires constant thrust
Actual orbit shouldn't
>>
>>122393591
Orbit requires constant acceleration. In his example, there was no gravity source and so he used a thruster. In the blaneds case, the constant acceletation is gravity. The source of the acceleration is largely irrelevant to the physic's engine
>>
>>122393591
That depends on what is orbiting what.
A small craft orbiting a planet needs consistent adjustments to its orbit to remain aloft.

No, that's what I'm saying

The maximum speed available to us isn't fast enough to orbit anything with gravity. You have to reach quite higher speeds to maintain a legitimate orbit around a blanded. Right now all we can hop to do is just fly circles around them and call it "orbiting"

So you're asking for a speed increase to extend the possibilities of the already implemented orbital mechanics.
If you want to be a pedant, I'll be as well.

Besides, many of the artificial satellites currently orbiting Earth require constant thrust to compensate for the tiny bit of friction experienced.
Try to calm your autism to manageable levels.
>>
>>122395951
You're still trying to equate the act of flying around something using the orbiter's power to flying around something using the orbited body's gravity. Which we can't do because you have to constantly fight against gravity or you have to generate your own thrust towards the planet while outside of its gravity field. It's not a matter of making adjustments to manage minor flight-path changes. It'd be the equivalent of flying a helicopter around the world and calling it orbiting.

Here's a more "proper" system, where the orbiting bodies are given an initial velocity, and from there are kept in orbit by the interaction of spherical gravgens with artificial mass.
This could be further refined by the use of a natural gravity mod, but the point still stands:
Asking for "orbital mechanics" make no fucking sense, given that orbits are clearly already possible.

That it's not possible to achieve a steady orbit around the current planets has nothing to do with the lack of aforementioned orbital mechanics, but rather the cripplingly low speed cap.
What you're asking for is a speed cap increase to make planetary orbits possible. That's all.

this is only true over very large timescales (centuries) or when the orbiting object is still within at least some of the planetary atmosphere. Issue has been fixed, for now and the future. Source was a redundant definition in the respawn ship, caused by Keencode Spaghetti.

In essence, a respawn ship's prefab cannot have "isrespawngrid=true" in it's definition, because then the game cannot change "isrespawngrid=false" to "isrespawngrid=true". Yes, this matters.

there is both an oxygen generator and oxygen tank just behind the cockpit.

I don't know whether the oxygen tank stores hydrogen as well still new to these mechanics last time I played was well before hydrogen thrusters became a thing. This is in creative mode so I am cheating.

Can't find any data online, I need to figure out a way to measure hydrogen gas consumption per thruster. Perhaps just make a small ship firmly planted in the ground and see how long it takes for a single small/large hydrogen thruster to deplete X Liters of hydrogen on full burn.

I tried this with a 60m bar, which should get the ship up to about 95m/s. I tried a few different types of connections for the end of the bar.

>Connector: Clangs as soon as you spin up the rotor
>Landing gear: Sets the ship's velocity to zero the instant it detaches. Then the other end of the bar swings around and smashes the ship to pieces.
>Merge block: Actually seems to work.

I put a pair of large merge blocks on the end of the bar, then put a small ship on the outer one (connected by landing gear). Detaching the merge blocks sent the block and ship into the sky together at >85m/s. Made it to a peak altitude of 614m, spinning madly the whole way.

A very basic mod already exists (was pre-planets and quickly tweaked with an altitude check) and more functionality could be added if we pestered the author or waited for a competing version. The one in the webbum you quoted uses a very simple 'how frontways is the wing moving' check that applies a deceleration force like I'd been suggesting for a while. Lift would be a simple 'which way is up' check and enable helicopters, though clang would smite you for it.
>>
>>122427219
Correction; it applies a force in the direction the wing is facing. It's more a stabilizer than a wing, but already makes flying in atmosphere 10x as fun.
>>
>>122417601
>Will it work?
No. It's probably explode. If it doesn't explode you will probably not hit 314 m/s. If you do hit 314 m/s then you will rapidly decelerate to 104 m/s.
>And is 314m/s enough to get to space?
No. Nowhere near. You'd get about 5km up before hitting 0 m/s.
(314 m/s) / (9.8m/s/s) = 32 seconds of ascent
((314 m/s + 0 m/2)/2) = 157 m/s average speed
157 m/s * 32 seconds = 5024 meters of distance traveled.

So install a max speed mod, then?

Of course, that doesn't fix the REAL problem, of the game interface not being built for orbits. If you want a stable orbit, you need to actually do the math yourself. The game won't do it for you. You need to keep track of your your own position.
What you actually want is for the game to just GIVE you an orbit, without you having to put in any of the work that goes into them in the real world.

Alright so I've more or less figured out how to nigger rig a large ship to land and takeoff from planets without pankaing into the ground or needing a fuckhuge array of thrusters to get off the ground.

So, to break gravity you need hydrogen thrusters, if you don't use them for your downward thruster you aren't getting in space without wasting a ton of mass and shipspace for atmospehre thrusters.

Atmosphere thrusters in general really fucking struggle to lift a largeship.

I tried to essentially have rear facing hydrogen thrusters, a compliment of ion thrusters for space/high atmosphere, and then a few downward facing atmosphere thrusters and direction ones so my ship could in effect be a mothership capable of going anywhere.

(I got inspiration from whitebase form gundam)

I only wnated hydrogen as a booster to escape the atmosphere and a speed boost so hydrogen fuel would be conserved as much as possible to extend operation time.

I really just wasn't possible without ending up having a wing of the ship be a massive piece of deadweight once I was in space.

However, it doesn't take many hydrogen thrusters to break out of the atmosphere on a large ship.

So I re worked the design, put downward facing hydrogen thrusters, direction atmosphere thrusters, and a large amount of ion thrusters.

This makes it fairy easy to land and takeoff form a planet, with really only moving around in atmosphere being limited because of hydrogen fuel.

So, if you aim to move to another side of the planet, fly into the upper atmosphere, and use ion thrusters and then descend again.

I'm not sure if they will rebalanced it, but I honestly don't mind so far.
It almost feels like actual rocketry.

Another option is detachable hydrogen boosters to save space and mass, or build a fuckhuge ship, just keep in mind it will probably only have the deck space of the red ship but be near triple the size.
>>
>>122429265
I punched a bunch of shit into Wolfram Alpha based on these numbers and got 707.3m/s as escape velocity. (As in, if you start at altitude 0 and velocity 707.3m/s straight up, you will reach 45km altitude without falling back to the planet.)

I also checked a few variants for vehicles that have thrusters onboard. Basically, if the vehicle's starting velocity is V, then its thrusters must provide acceleration A in order to escape the planet.
V = 0 -> A = 9.81 m/s^2 (duh)
V = 100 -> A = 9.13
V = 250 -> A = 7.08
V = 350 -> A = 5.57
V = 500 -> A = 3.25
V = 707.3 -> A = 0

Oh, then yeah you'd want more than 500m/s. As someone else said gravity is linear and not an inverse square, so it's not terrible.

You will only take 11 and a half(ish) seconds to break 5km, and you'll be traveling at about 388m/s when you do.
I'd really like to math out the rest of it but I'm fucking fried today and brain's not cooperating, can't even remember the proper formulas

V = 350 -> A = 5.62
V = 500 -> A = 3.44

Been fiddling around in survival and god damn, the Ice required to lift off from a planet's orbit for a small 6000kg shuttle using 2 small hydrogen thrusters is too heavy.

I'd need more than the weight of my craft in ice to escape gravity's influence around 10 tons worth.

I don't know how much a hydrogen tank would help in reducing the weight but it is too big and heavy and there are no compact hydrogen tanks, would work nicely on a bigger vessel.

It is funny, the oxygen generator seems to instantly convert ice into oxygen and hydrogen, thought it would take time. There is no way for me to tell how much volume of oxygen and hydrogen I have stored however unless I use oxygen/hydrogen tanks.

1 or 2 Large ionic thrusters seem to be the best way to go for a very small craft, you don't need to add significantly more weight in fuel or worry about hydrogen. slap in a battery and 2 solar panels, that would be just about enough time on full charge to exit a planet.

On entry two small atmospheric thrusters seem to be enough to slow the craft down but you have to get pretty close ~6km for the thrusters to activate downside is I can only use this on planets with oxygen. And they weigh a lot more.

2 large ion thrusters pointing down for exit/re-entry and a few small ions for the other directions might work nicely if I can keep the weight down to around 6 tons.

The hydrogen tank's mass doesn't actually change with capacity, it's a constant 1241.6 kg. A hydrogen tank holds 40,000 units of Hydrogen.
1 kg of ice produces 9 units of Hydrogen.
So a hydrogen tank holds about 4444 kg of ice with 3.5x less mass.

The semantics of what exactly the atmos thruster of space engineers are odd.
Based visually on how it looks it does have a turbine blade that compressing incoming air to use as a jet stream that provides thrust. Heating of the gas, if any, is done by some electrical process instead of combustion.

So it's either:
a) a non-cumbustion electric turbojet
b) an electric propeller engine that happens to use turbine blades instead of props.

There are literally 2 reasons to build a ship for blaneds landing, each built with a specific purpose in mind:
>cargo hauler
get shit to/from orbit
>personal shuttle
get shitters to/from orbit

Everything else can and should be built where it supposed to operate.
Fighters have to have minimal mass to stay agile read: alive so you might as well load a lifter with them, either built or scrapped, and haul them back to the orbit instead of putting H-thrust systems on them.
In fact, not only you don't need to put the whole H-thrust system on the planetary fighter, you might not even need the ions on it.
Use the haulers to get resources to the surface, build a factory and make them fighters.
Just like in SupCom, you start with a cargo ship instead of ACU and build a factory to build fighters and other planetary stuff.

I had a reactor there to charge the battery faster but it was switched off for the launch, could get around 20~30 minutes full burn on a single max charged battery which might be just about enough to both enter and exit a planet on a full charge.

I got it working, but holy hell it takes forever to recharge the battery even with 3 solar panels. I mean fuck me around 10 hours to charge even with all 3 panels lined up optimally. Not of much use as a cheap compact all rounder exploration vessel

Better to ditch the solar panels and go for a merge block instead, that way I can charge it when docked.

If I adjust it some more it could be useful as a small cheap convenient A to B transport/escape pod for docking between stations on a planet and in orbit, if that is the case I can make it even smaller and cheaper since you would not require much oxygen and redundancy reactor be damned if you get stuck in space tough shit that's what the cyanide pills are for.

Also, the server takes 15 minutes to download each time, and usually gets stuck ~40%

I use a standardized rechargeable battery module in all my ships, pic related. Also got an automatic battery replacer for ships that can't run without that particular battery. Might be worth considering.

but that's wrong, anon.

if you're using autoloader's technically the 4 clips should be better. in practice they're not due to the arkward shape and more feeders needed.

However the best method, especially if you're using 1m clips is to beltload everything. for each extra feeder you'll get another shell per reload cycle so add as many of the damn things you can. beltloaders also stack in reload, so you can make some insane firerate by just adding more beltloaders and more coolers, even for 0.50 HE.

That would be very useful in larger ships, not in this case though its just a flying battery with a connector.

Pic related, surprisingly effective weighs only 3.5 tons and can fly at max charge for an hour full burn. Achieves orbit with plenty to spare.

You want to be careful with how you handle it when on a planet though, if the large thruster is not pointing towards the center of gravity you won't be flying for long the thrusters in the other directions are weak.

That being said it is not particularly difficult to handle. Good for cheap early transport into spehss and landing on planets, bad for everything else.

It might just have about enough room for a single minigun but any additional weight will impact its acceleration/deceleration making it less and less useful at exiting/landing on planets until it can't even achieve lift.

>if you're using autoloader's
What's the alternative to using one or more autoloaders?

>4 clips should be better
Let's start with the facts we can agree on:
For a given shell, there is a time it takes to load from clip to autoloader - we'll call that X.
For the same shell, the time it takes a clip feeder to make the shell and insert it in a clip is 2*X.
The complexity reload modifier is given by C=n^0.25, where C is the modifier and n is the number of autoloaders.

I'll make an assumption, hopefully something we can agree about:
The reload rate of an autoloader is modified by the complexity penalty (C and input bonus (I) as per X/(C*I)

Provided cooldown and shell supply isn't an issue, the fire rate will then be (n*X)/(C*I).
Should ammo supply be the limiting factor, the fire rate will instead depend on the amount of feeders (F) given by F*X/2
We can then calculate the firing rate of a given autoloader:clip:feeder ratio, keeping X as a variable. see pic

There is one thing to keep in mind when you're looking at this picture:
For setups where there is a 1:>1 ratio of autoloaders:clips, but ammo is a limiting factor, the real rate of fire will be less than expected.
This is because the clip input bonus depends on how many clips are loaded - if ammo depletes faster than it is replenished, then this bonus will not be available at full time.

You've probably also noticed that there's an instance where the 1:4:4 ratio appears superior.
Note that for the same amount of blocks, 1:2:2 and 1:3:3 achieve very similar rate of fire, despite being limited by ammo.
One could probably use a 1:2:>2 or 1:3:>3 with success for small cannons. For a reloading system larger than 50 blocks, 1:1:1 is hands down the best.

tl;dr:
no, ure r rong, 1:1:1 superior

Platinum isn't found on planets. Only moons and asteroids. That means you can't build ion thrusters until you're already mining off-world.

... ON THE PLANET OF AYYY
>>
Alright, /egg/. I'm setting up a new goal for myself. Feel free to join in. I won't actually be able to start till after work. Fuck.

Design the cheapest possible ship capable of escaping the earth-like planet with the following:
1. An engineer, or multiple if you can fit it
2. A refinery or the necessary components
3. An assembler or the necessary components
4. A handful of steel plates for building a platform to build on
5. Sufficient life support to boot strap production in space
6. A battery
7. Ore detector
8. Reactor? This depends on how practical refining all the materials for a reactor using battery power is.

There is no platinum on planets so this means this has to be a hydrogen fueled ship and it needs to have enough remaining fuel to do some scouting for a nice asteroid or landing site on the moon.
