They start providing thrust once you reach the point atmo thrusters stop providing thrust. So you use the atmos till they reach their limit then you use the ions.

Even though the PC power needed is fucking crazy, planets are sweet.
>>
>>122162835
if gravity is high enough, there is a middle section where both ions and atmosphere thrusters lack a lot of power. 1g+ planets look good for hydrogen thruster use.
has anyone tried building a space elevator? (giant pole for a wheeled robot to climb)

>>
>>122169743
I don't have a shitter computer so pretty great. Crashes a bunch when I tried playing multiplayer though. Been running fine with no issues in single.

Currently dismantling my lander and building my base at the base of a plateau in the dark but I set up some comfy as fuck lighting.

If you clip solar panels intro the ground, by placing the on the edge of a station block embedded in the ground, they'll get LoS to the sun during the night.
>>
>>122169743
I didn't thought it would run that bad.
>>
How the fuck do you land the planetary lander without crashing?
I hold spacebar parallel to the ground and still crash and die
>>
>>122170893
Then you don't have enough thrust-to-weight. Build more engines or decrease the mass.
>>
>>122170893
Fly it like a plane; pull up to slow down until you're at a hover, then slowly descend.

Also, if you gotta go fast, face the ground and hold spacebar so your large thrusters are going the direction you want.

my rig is running at around 45fps @1920x1080 regardless of whether my graphical settings are set to high or low at 15km view distance.

the only thing I found by twiddling with settings in game tanking my frame rate was foliage density increased to retarded levels but setting it to a low value doesn't affect frame rate that much.

using
>i7 4790 non k
>GTX 980
>12GB DDR3 @1600MHz

one of the CPU cores hits 57% usage rest use around 15~30%, the GPU usage fluctuates often hitting 99% but mostly just sits around 65~70% usage often dipping to 44%.

It looks pretty cool so far but needs to be optimized. The game keeps freezing and crashing in the load screen unless I tab out while it is loading, weird.

this makes for a really cool actual need for carriers now since a ion power carrier can dip into the gravity well enough to dump atmo fighters and then burn out.

or if you do it wrong then you got a giant carrier lawn dart.

>>
>>122174509
Already verifying.
>>
>>122174407
It would only have to dip to recover them, they can just freefall after launch until their atmo thrusters start working. Getting them back is trickier. The fighters could be fitted with the bare minimum ion thrusters needed to get back to the carrier, but trans-atmospheric capability compromises their effectiveness. Making the carrier capable of dipping into the gravity well is probably the better option.

>>
>>122175738
Well, there are newtonian physics, but when you're in space you're not actually orbiting anything, you're just in space
and the speed limit imposed by the engine and the tiny spheres of influence on planets mean that slingshots and such are not really a thing
so in the end you just have to point at it and fire your thrusters till you hit max speed then turn off dampeners and drift there.

Gravity is a bit stronger than i thought.

Thought parking it up at 0.25 the ion engines would hold the ship.

It seems to be best to exploit the speed limit and burn torwards the horizon as soon as you realize that way the falling speed caps out since the rest of your speed is forwards.

Ive seen people make and design shit in starmade, spengies and FTD that shits all over what most actual engineers would come up with. Id certify some of the people in here as an honorary engineer.

Engineers biggest problem is that almost all of them have no actual experience using the things they are designing out in the field. Its why so many mechanics and other trades use a certain tool or system and can call it shit right away because it doesnt work nearly as good as an engineer who made it thought it would.

There's fuckers all over the likes of Tumblr who are like "I'm an engineer" and all they've done is a uni degree which they have then gone on to do fuck all with.

I don't know what kind of shit McDonalds-tier engineers you've seen, but if you think anything in any of these games comes close to real engineering work you're massively deluded. You're not an engineer for building digital Legos in an extremely limited and arbitrary simulation, holy shit. You're an engineer if you got a degree in an engineering field and work in the field, you are not an engineer because you designed a clangy mech in SE. First year courses in engineering shit all over whatever shit people have made in any /egg/ games.

>Engineers biggest problem is that almost all of them have no actual experience using the things they are designing out in the field

This happens, though it is hardly as common as you make it out to be. Also not sure what you are hinting, at, I am hoping you aren't hinting at playing /egg/ games = real life experience.

Is it possible to automate landing on a planet?

If you already know the mass of your ship and the force the thrusters are capable of delivering in one particular direction.

The gravitational acceleration increases as you get closer, luckily you don't have to worry about reading it since you have inertial dampening which opposes it automatically.

So you could switch inertial dampening on and off the moment you are in gravity's pull.

I have no clue how to read current altitude and speed however. Without an altitude reading it is possible to land if you know the speed at which your craft doesn't get damaged but it could take ages to land.

maybe there exists some exploit with antennas, lazer antenas, GPS coordinates, beacons and what have you for positional tracking but that could get too complicated.
>>
Why the fuck are planets 120km?
52km was fine and much easier on the frame rate
>>
>>122181227
Just pretend and use autopilot with a generous enough coordinates, and maybe sensors if you want it smooth at the landing.
>>
>>122181238
Because people cried they wanted it bigger. 52km would have been more than enough, yes.
>>
>>122181092
Yea if by "possible" you mean it would take 2 hours to make planetfall because the sim speed and frames would be less than 1.

Warbros Server here, copying from least ded.

Current server status: Up, but occasionally shaky.

To join up with us when planets, there's some prep work to be done. First of all, you need to get into the group. To do so, message Ced23Ric on Steam. This guy: http://steamcommunity.com/id/ced23ric

Also, to save yourself some loadtime, preload our mods.
You can subscribe the to collection here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=375603526
There is a preload world (offline, creative) which you should start once to prod all mods to download: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=529237944
You can also use that for offline building, blueprinting and then building on the serbian later. I don't care if you want this server to be vanila, it won't be. It's a shitload of mods, but they have been weighted and tested and they work. Half of them are tweaks and visual shit (no beacon glare, for example) anyway.

You will be invited to a group called "Warbros Space Engineers". That group works as a whitelist. Only people in that group will be able to join the server. That is so I can control better who has access and we don't get unwashed pubbies.

Quick rule overview:
- Don't be a dick.
- No megalomanic superbuilds, use offine creative for that.
- No grid spam, every ship/thing you build is a calculated physics object that eats performance. So, no drone swarms, eh?
- PvP is opt-in between two (or more) consenting parties. No ifs, no butts.
- Only one drill per player. Take the Large Ship Earthbreaker, it's a good drill. Why? Drilling kills the game for everyone. Simu speed drops like a white city girl taking a moonshine shot down South.
- Talk to me if you have issues. Don't just shitpost on /egg/, talk to me. I'll see what I can do.

Some general stuff:
- You are encouraged to make your own faction. Warbros will have one, auto-accepting peace treaties. You can apply to join us, but if you're not into building shit together and sperging out on TS3, this might not be for you. Buddy up with someone, make things happen.
- Warbros faction will not hold your hand. We'll hep if you are conveniently close and can spare the time/resources, though.
- The server will have some QoL addons, such as the helmet mod. Read the description and understand it. Protip: Turn of the glass reflection, set the shadow scale so there is no shadow and deactivate delayed movement.
- Another is Chat History. Type /ch to see the last 50 messages typed in /global. Might help with catching up.
- Also, Build Info, which gives you information about blocks you're placng. Turn it on/off with /buildinfo in /global chat.
- There's only one respawn ship, the Sparky. It has all you need to survive, some mats, beacon, solars, nuke reactor, refinery/assembler. Spawn in one of those and set out to meet the cold void. Keep in mind that Sparkies cannot land on planets because lol thrust.
- There will not be a Starter Zone for new players, unless you make and maintain one. We won't.
- Every time I log off, I will make a copy of the server save. The server is set to autosave every 30 minutes. Recovery of items might be tricky. Make blueprints of your shit - Ctrl+B.

You might want to grab the Warbros UI, too. See through menus and generally improved visibility and an increased G Menu size.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=375575227
I run it with the yellow font pack.

Wish you were here.

Last word: Offline raidfags, pls go. You are butts.

Planets are placed manually. They are in no way procedurally placed and generated. When you load a map with planets, it's because keen or whoever placed them there. This being said, I hope someone makes a custom map where the planets are 50 - 100k instead of 150k. I like the big planets, they are just so tedious to get to and maneuver around.

>>
>>122204246
It's like we're going full fucking circle everytime this comes up.

PvP requires a reason to fight. There is none, other than wanting to fight.
PvP requires the warring parties to find one another. With unlimited worlds and the size of planets (which are larger than the play area used to be, mind you), this unlikely.
PvP also is a load of shit if all you need to do to win is: Wait until they log out.

There is no cunning, no competency, no skill involved. A grid without player observation is a free kill.

I don't get why anyone, other than someone hellbent on being a cunt to others, would want to support offline raiding. That's DayZ tiers of trollan, only that you're reking shit someone spent hours if not days building. That's plain asshole behaviour.

Want to fight? Talk shit and throw down the gauntlet. Agree to fight and then go nuts. If you and another guy want to offline raid your bases, go ahead. But leave those who don't have a hard on for losing all their shit to some asshole grinding it down over night with no rewards in playtime or enjoyment alone.

You tremendous cunt I don't understand how you can flip the logic this hard. If you want to grind down peoples shit randomly go find one of many pvp servers that are available publicly.

This server doesn't want "autism in peace" it wants to build stuff with other people without the fear of some shitstain coming and ruining something they have no investment in.

I agree with it, too. It's the reason the PvP setup is what it is - because people can't just be trusted not to pull that shit. All it takes is one chance stumble upon another faction's grid and *poof* there goes a shitton of work.
It's not sperging, it's taking steps to ensure that there's room for the people who don't look for the same things in the game that you do - SE is entirely open-ended, and not everyone wants to fight, some folk just want to build together, which is an equally valid way of playing. And look at it this way: maybe some of those peaceful builders might see some of the inter-faction carnage that they've stayed out of and consider getting in on it.

Not invisible ship coming in.

Wanting to make an artillery boat and I've been playing with rotors a lot so I made this.

Flies at ~24m/s at 430m up. Quite accurate with its guns (0.048 inaccuracy) and fires in volleys of 24 shots (12 from each gun) lasting 1s, about 3s between volleys. Holds ~200 shells in each cannon so it fires for a long while. And only 248 recoil from each cannon per shot so it doesn't really react to firing poorly. Both cannons have their own AI so they fire at they own thing.

Thoughts and opinions on it?

Actually no. I just want to learn to build ships with simple geometry that don't require buttloads of work and detailing to make it look less shit.
Now, about blocks. Splitting stuff in sections and saving them as templates helped simplify and speed up the designing/building process a lot.

It's my first real take on big ships that I have actually put some effort in designing.
Thanks to the modular structure, it even has an interior you can wal- fly around, even if it's just long and poorly lit corridors.

Come to think of it, it was originally going to be 0.5m but it was garbage so I changed to 0.225, I could probably make it longer and stay 1m shell. Testing. I can definitely make it one part longer (For two more gunpowder making muzzle velocity 460 or so) Not sure how well it'll actually shoot though.

Well, I hope you have a lot of armor around ammo clips, otherwise it'll be just gone.

I noticed it was an issue when I had it fight a Megawatt. First time I got lucky I think and it shot into the center of the ship and got distracted there and I actually destroyed it because of that, second time it hit the front of the cannons and it all exploded instantly. I might just shift the magazines into the back of the side pods since they're mostly empty.

I'm with the "opt-in PvP" thing going for Warbros.

Spengies active PVP is literally comprised of "Who has more turrets" followed immediately by "who can ram their ships nose into the others power plant first"

And offline raiding is literally "waste all of their ammo with a decoy piece and steal everything"

No matter what, there is no quality to sustained PVP, and the loser always ragequits unless the host does a rollback
>>
>>122210003
This was a very good decision. It increases the reload period significantly but the amount of accuracy it's gained by having the shots be twice the speed is incredible. Much, much more effective.

Same for me but with UNSC (Halo) style shit mostly, I've got some ideas for damage feedback; weapon, thruster, warp drive, reactor/engine capabilities etc for my bridge using programming. I'm assuming a lot because I haven't looked up how it works in spengies yet but if so it'd make for some interesting slow paced 'realistic' style piloting for 1-3 people.

Not that I don't like big rigs as much as the next guy, but ships like that serve little purpose and take a huge hit on performance. Nevertheless, that was the observation of the past - it might be fine now. You can try, but I might have to pull it if it's bad. Keep in mind though, you cannot rotors/pistons. And Warbros is a survival server, so you will have to get the materials first.

If you don't need sensors or remote control blocks, you are fine. If you do, you have a problem. Sensors insta kill the performance, to the tune of 0.02 simu speed. Not 0.2 - 0.02. We had to remove sensors until Keen fixes this. Essentially, sensors update 10000 times a second.

Not the guy you're arguing with but that's retarded. You don't need a degree in engineering to be an engineer. While I certainly wouldn't consider any /egg/ games as true engineering or even remotely close, you don't have to have gone to a university and gotten a degree to be something. A piece of paper means absolutely nothing unless you're applying for a job. Maybe that paper came with the skills that make an engineer, maybe they didn't. Some skilled engineers have never even gone to college.
>>
>>122213813
Certainly, just recently listened (audiobook) to The Fall of Reach and loved every second of it. Problem is you can't have the protag faction lose forever or else it gets stale.

I like how the Covenant falls apart due to it's own divides and weaknesses too not due to humans getting better tech. If the Sangheli hadn't fucked everyone up/the San'Shyum hadn't been dicks to them etc the Covenant still would have facerolled humanity.
>>
>>122213242
Fuck yeah, Freespace brethren. The vessel design was one of the best parts of those games, even when it got outlandish. It improved immensely with the second game as well, things got a little less boxy.
Before FS2, the last space-sim game I'd played was X-Wing vs. TIE-Fighter, and the Myrmidon starter fighter looked so fucking weird and interesting. It just sucked me in from there.

Very true, but then it falls prey to the "you lucked out" plot device.
Honestly I'm not even sure if that's a valid complaint, or if I've been exposed to too many typical plot developments to see it as valid and become a bit jaded in the process.
A lot of plots lean on the forces of evil/darkness/whatever getting pissed at each other and fucking each other over, and in the context of a videogame that can potentially translate into a sense of loss of player agency, since they had no hand in their comeuppance, so there's little personal satisfaction in overcoming them.

>>122214557
I wouldn't say that that's the case for this though, it's well established (at least in the EU) that the Covenant is unstable, or at least has tensions. Hell, the entire thing is founded on beating down races if they don't accept joining you. Then playing as the Arbiter/alongside the 'good' covvies in H2 and H3 helps with the sense of 'winning' even though it wasn't by purely humanities hand. Besides, it's not like humanity just sat back and jerked itself off while that happened, they were fighting tooth and nail to not let the Covenant activate the rings.

Anyhow this is spamming the general at this point sooooooo

I'd say it's good for the thread, there's tangential discussion of ships, it's sci-fi-related at the very least, and it keeps a relatively slow thread going.
But you've got a point. I remember reading the Halo 2 booklet with the conversation between a pair of Elites pondering why Humanity wasn't being offered membership despite the fact that every single person was throwing everything they had at them. Giving the player direct input into the Covenant schism via the Arbiter sections definitely helped ablate that issue, as well.
I want to say I like the Pillar of Autumn, but it looks fucking terrible.

I'm not that easily amused by novelty, or maybe it just isn't novel for me.
I play Minecraft from time to time, the last thing I want to do is play a space game trying to be it poorly.
Because I've played MC I'm really disillusioned to the whole "massive destructible voxel landscape" shit, it's really just empty, lifeless space, once you've seen every biome you've seen it all, at least space proper is honest about it.
I really hated it the minute I got stuck in my mineshaft, due to the clunky nature of right click drill clearing, and realized the game just isn't built around planets.
I'd probably enjoy creative but survival, which I'd prefer to play, is a massive disappointment to me.
I wish they had just done more bugfixing, non-planets features, and added VOIP.

I finally got to the bottom of my crashing issue. It has nothing to do with RAM.

Just LOOKING at even the smallest planet available causes my video card drivers to crash for less than a second before they are restarted. Of course with them crashing and restarting every second, it doesn't take long for it to automatically deny spaceengineers.exe access to the graphics card. This is why it keeps crashing.

So ya, I'm pretty fucked until Keen fixes it. If they fix it. I'll stop blogging now.

i've been working on and off with a spreadsheet with those details, here's a WIP with most of your terrifying work done:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1NjN8iCCGe3hzt0Gbe2EFSkponU4ztHS41dZ-SCpKLVM/edit?usp=sharing

note that's a public link, anyone can edit, please don't vandalize it. i have an original copy and i'll continue working on it in my spare time, for now my real job is keeping my brain from being able to do any recreational maths.

the values in this sheet, the ones populated, are absolutely correct. i've verified them ingame and the math makes sense. essentially for beltfeds all you need to know is:
1 beltfed is equivilant to 3x the reload speed of 1 autoloader with 4 clips on it, or 6x the speed of 1 autoloader with 1 clip on it, and
the inputs for reloading all rack a shell simultaneously, so 7 inputs with a 10 sec rack time means 7 shells after a 10 second delay, not 7 shells evenly spaced over 10 seconds, so reloading is essentially done in cycles and there's a minimum # of cycles to reload a clip fully before you can refire it. the worst setup you can have is something like 22 rounds in a clip, 7 inputs, as you'll need another full cycle for that last stupid shell in order to resume firing.

feel free to post questions here i'll be monitoring this thread for a while, big fan of FtD, damn keencoded blaneds are like visual clutter to me.

be my guest, the purpose of the sheet was to be able to easily visualize and determine which autoloader setup would be best for a cannon.

i almost always use the same setup (ie 1 loader with 2 inputs, X10 or 1 loader with 4 inputs X4, etc) in order to make building less of a goddamn headache and avoid staggering firerates.

there's some similar stuff on the forums if you look for it, i think under general discussion, it's the same math i'm using though, just exponents n simple add/mult/divide. i want to do a railgun segment but honestly, they're so fucking useless i can't bring myself to bother with the math, the end result of 'what railgun setup is optimal' is just 'not a railgun'.

if you do make a super cool graph/image thing please post it here, i'd quite like to see it.
>>
>>122244074
>the end result of 'what railgun setup is optimal' is just 'not a railgun'.
They sound restricted to spinal weapons.
>>
>>122244293

the sheer quantity of space they require to gain any reasonable amount of damage is easily outmatched by adding more coolers, more autoloaders and a single gunpowder casing to the shell, every time. or simply an entire additional gun.

they need to be buffed heavily to see any real use, i expect they will be when the balance pass hits for custom cannons, as literally nobody uses them right now and everyone says 'why are these so bad please fix'. nick's a cool and frighteningly productive guy i'm sure he'll fix it.

still better to have another cannon. the only reason i'd ever consider a railgun is for a very high alpha from stupendous range, but that'd mean basically no real combat viability beyond the alpha as ~60% of your ship would be batteries and chargers. shit's dumb.

if you really want stupendous alpha, multiple 500cm cannons firing simultaneously with big HE shaped charge heads does outstanding against anything you can hit, they just take 20+ seconds to reload, cooldown and for you to right the ship after the broadside flips it onto its back.

or missiles, which are obviously better than the nucannonss for everything outside of long range engagements. this ship's shells move at 440m/s and it's easily engaging at 3.6km with about .4 inaccuracy on the barrels, still gets a hit every 4-5 shells which is more than enough to kill shit well outside it's engagement range. the plus sign thing you see is the muzzle flash, not the (much smaller) ship itself.

Compact spaceplane attempt.

She's a bit too heavy. Burns up the entire tank on the way up and you have to push the last bit of the trip on ions. She does have about an hour of flight time in atmosphere though.

It can go down again. It has all three engine types. You need a refuel down on the surface or in orbit before entry if you want back up.

>>122250447
I want a compact ship capable of at least two escapes that is also capable of sustained flight while in the atmosphere as well. It's actually kinda easy to do with large ships. I'm attempting to do it with a small ship now to try and keep it cheap to produce.

This one unfortunately is way too heavy. It can barely do one escape and reentry is a bit hairy. Unless you're landing in a nice flat plain near sealevel you're not going to be able to slow down enough.

I'm thinking now of tossing one of the large ion engines (there's two on the rear with one hydrogen). That'll cut some weight. Maybe I can get rid of one of the batteries. Take off a thruster or two of each type in all the other directions. Probably strip the armor. I was trying to make it look clean and sleakish, but oh well. Form follows function.

>>122251436
Use a large ship. A large rocket strapped to a tank, some maneuvering thrusters, gyros, and a cockpit can make it.

So I've got a base for my Space Elevator and an idea for how to make the car move, but I can't seem to copy/paste large sections and weld them together, while it was working fine for smaller pieces. Is this because it's just too big to copy-paste or is it because you can't attach certain pieces?

Also I have a good working prototype elevator car using wheels with no friction to avoid raping the walls of the shaft and using Grav Gens and an artificial mass that works like a charm in space but does literally nothing on the surface. Any ideas for getting out into space besides just slapping a bunch of atmospheric engines to it? Preferably a way that won't need anything more than a single battery since as of now I was going to have it charge via a connector block at the top and bottom of the elevator.

How the fuck can you not explain these two simple terms without going into acronym bullshit?

DPS (damage per second) is the average damage dealt over any longer time span.
Alpha (or burst damage) is damage in a very short period of time.
If you were to plot instances of damage dealt versus time, DPS would be the best-fitting function for the points, while alpha would be apparent as any large spikes above this line.

Man, I haven't touched spehss engies in ages, been waiting for this update

Trying to build a small cheap craft that can take me into space and land on planets without using reactors since uranium is rare initially. Obvious energy source seems to be solar panels and batteries, the atmospheric thrusters look like the most efficient way to break away from the planet's orbit.

30 minutes or more of battery life on full burn would be great, once in space you could just kick back, switch of inertial dampening and let your batteries recharge.

Thought I could get away with that strategy and use one puny small ion thruster in each direction to navigate in space while large atmospheric thrusters take most of the brunt allowing me to escape into orbit whilst being an efficient means of travel on planets so I can have my cake and eat it to.

But it turns out the atmospheric thrusters get choked out of oxygen too early, I still have to deal with close to 1g which 1 small ion thruster is woefully insufficient for.

Hydrogen thrusters sound like a pain to use since you have to constantly supply them with hydrogen, however I already have an oxygen generator installed which I believe generates Hydrogen from ice as well, it would be a waste not to at least consider it. But it should only take around 5~6 minutes to completely exit a planet's gravity.

sounds tempting to do away with the oxygen/hydrogen generator and use an oxygen tank instead and install a few large ion thrusters since a small spacecraft like this would be more suited for hopping between stations.

Anyone been trying to do something similar? what do you think?
>>
Morning.

So, in theory, Warbros would be doing fine. The problem is, it can't. We have sensors beign cheeky (0.01) simu speed because they trigger 10000 times a second, we have debris not being removed and floating item limit not working. Drilling causes floating rocks. People need to mine.To increase insult to injury, interacting with a planet's surface and other player/ship voxel interaction seem to also produce issues. The physics calculations are abosolutely mental.

I just took the serbian down for maintenance. Lemme see where we are and then I shall boot 'er up again.
