Game idea: A woman has to make her man a sandwich. The woman plays against the sandwich components, who have to avoid being assembled by her. The player can play as either the woman or the sandwich, with the other role played by AI, or two people can play against each other. Rips off Surgeon Simulator controls for the woman, and I Am Bread controls for the sandwich.

The controversy from the sandwich-making woman alone will sell millions!

I've put my project on the backburner for the last few months to try and learn sprite art. I have come to the conclusion that I cannot into art plus the constant reminder that time I spend on art can be spent on the actual game.

Where can I find artists for reasonable prices? I don't really want to just aimlessly look through deviant/tumblr to find artists and ask them to work on the project and the pastebin seems to be more geared to finding devs/musicians.

I settled with the name "Predicate" for my game and am working on making the title art for it. I'm stuck on the letters C, I and T.

Which of the examples in the picture has the best versions of the letters?

alright so there is no such thing as pixel art,its not really been documented and i really tried to find any literature on it

my conclusion is that pixel artists use ref from actual 2d characters, pick their palette and style and simply draw the same shading and highlights just pixels, the anatomy and structure still applies to pixel art, some people even make high res pixel art which i find really hard to make

here are some people you might turn to, not all of them are pros so they might not be available for some time

Is there a middleground between OOP and ECS?
>>
>>122264452
ECS is only good for the highest level of an engine, it manages the interconnect between each true engine
OOP might be good for game logic if you're some retard that has to use OOP
Something more procedural may be better for resource management
A rendering component may benefit from a functional system

Literally just do whatever the fuck you want
>>
>>122264452
Yes.

Correct OOP ends up being close to a compile time ECS anyway.

Any other unityfags out here using photon for multiplayer?

Working on it at the moment, my game is a 2d platforming multiplayer type thing and im having trouble making other player movement smooth, so far i can either make other players appear jerky and accurate or smoothish but lagging behind slightly, what are the best transform settings for smooth animation in a 2d game where the player can accelerate and decelerate when he moves

also had a few issues with animations not playing for other players, should i use photon animator view or focus on using PhotonView.RPC in the scripts which call the animations themself

Posted this in the last thread but no-one cared but; how do I into serialization in C++?

Basically; I'm using an entity component system to model objects. So you wanted to make an object that is a shirt:

You would have an object of say, clothing, then you would give it attributes of [upperbody], [material = wool] and so on.

This is all fine. My problem is that I want to store the info about these attributes in a text file, then read it in on the fly. In particular I'd like to be able to call a function like GetDescription which outputs a text description based on whatever attributes an item has: "This is a $wool $shirt it is $something and $somethingElse"

I've looked at a bunch of stuff for this like YAML and JSON but it all seems like I'd have to write a pretty hefty serializer or include a serious amount of bullshit third party code to get anything out of it...

How do other games manage this?

If anyone has played it, the kind of modelling I'm looking for here is something akin to how they do it in EU4 and Crusader Kings; although I believe they used YAML for the static text and then wrote their own serializer for the logic files (countries/decisions etc.).

Any ideas? Should I expect better from /agdg/ than actually wanting to discuss game programming?

Prioritize gameplay at the start of the project, get a solid fun working game as soon as you can. Then after it's solid you can start adding more content and start prioritizing art and music more.

good morning AGDG

Today our task is simple, to make progress.
this word might be sensitive to you so we'll say "pushing gnomes" for now.
If you're already pushing gnomes then feel free to stop reading now.

pushing gnomes may seem like an impossible task at times, you become distracted, bored, stuck or confused.
But do not get upset! this happens to the best of us, we all stop pushing gnomes at some point.
Today what i want us to do is, write down a task to complete in your game, it could be anything you choose but it has to be something you 100% you can get done today.
It could be the easiest thing you can think of, but try to challenge yourself if you feel confident!
So with that in mind, on a PHYSICAL piece of paper or sticky note.
leave it on your desk or around your workspace, we want this note to be the wheels on your cart to push gnomes with.
Now at this point you have two choices

>leave your house
go out have lunch somewhere you've never tried take a walk through a park, go for a jog. do something outside at least for 30 minutes to an hour.

don't feel obligated to work on your task right away, all you need to do is believe that you can finish it by the end of your day.

If you have completed your task then feel free to reply to this post and your pushed gnomes.

If you don't then explain why in as many words as possible.

I wish you all the best of luck!

I think I know exactly what answer I'll get, but I want to ask anyways.

Currently my textures are nothing but straight, clean lines, line seen in the bottom object. The other day I decided to fuck around and make some crude stairs, and I think it turned out alright. I tried reworking the train car to look similar, but I'm not sure whether I should stick with the crude, almost painted style or not.

So sloppy textures or clean textures?
>>
>>122278396
A happy medium between those two would be great. The top one looks way too messy to feel stylish.

I'd say you should use crude textures whenever crude craftsmanship would be logical and precise textures whenever precise craftsmanship would be logical, for instance a humble house would have a crudely made chair with crudely drawn textures.

It's probably easier to project the line to 2D, since the mouse position does describe a point in 2D and finding the closest point on a line to another point is easy.

That sounds neat, I know very little about games in general, but have been passing around an idea of an isometric MMO (many abilities, relies heavily on teamwork, single-world, RP, gear-system), aiming for MOBA-style combat (low cooldowns, skill-shot based abilities, next-to-impossible to do 100% perfectly).

I probably shouldn't, given how little I know of what players like, but I want to play it myself so badly.

good luck anon, all the tutorials are garbage video tutorials. I hate video tutorials and all I can seem to find for unity is video tutorials. Even worse it's those tutorials that were initially streams so I have to watch him fuck around for 5 minutes, get something wrong and try to figure out what he did wrong.

Or he's talking to someone in chat but I can't see the chat so I'm completely left out of the conversation, or constantly reminding the chat to be civil and eventually you realized you spent 35 minutes reading 6 minutes of content.

It's why I jumped to monogame even with it's shitty documentation. At the very least I can figure out what's going on instead of looking at alien runes on unity.

(relatively) new project progress because my last project was a bit too ambitious.

>I have a play area where players are clamped to.
>Ships can move via keyboard and gamepad and can shoot lasers (though it's not so much a laser but a badly compressed image of a hammer)
>The ship, laser, and enemies have collision
>I made a sprite renderer that is able to rip frames off a single image and play through the frames. It can loop, play once and end, or play once and freeze on last frame.
>The sprite sheet can also handle multiple sprites on the same image (as long as they're all the same size).
>There's a title screen, with a very simple key config (for keyboard) and a game start.
>There's also a lose condition if they bump into your ship too many times (default 3).
>I have a background, play area cover, and have parallax backgrounds but no actual images for it so it's kinda a wasted feature for now.

Pic related showing off the play animation and freeze on last frame (but it happens mostly off screen so this is moot).
Also showing the play area and boundaries. Character/ship portrait on the left, play area in the middle, lives/stats/scores/etc.. on the right.

Essentially I've done nothing so far but I should be able to start working on the actual game from here.

Spend about 4 years learning to program, + that much again each for music, art, etc. as you are inclined (or just outsource / use free assets) at a university or equivalent level

then study games design, read a bunch of books on game design, engines, maths (linear algebra etc.) and so on

also make sure to get really comfy will all your game dev tools, software engineering environment, etc.

then maek game

I really don't want to spend money, but writing my own Dialogue tree editor for Unity is killing me slowly inside. Unfortunately, all the systems other people built cost money.

Is having to pay for common libraries normal in game dev? I'm new to developing games, but in all the web/application development I've done before, things that are really common tend to be written already and MIT-licensed. Fuck, I've written a few such libraries myself.

So I'm debating putting reloading in my game. It adds "realism" to the game, I suppose. But, it is such a rhythm killer. I believe this is why games like shmups don't have reloading, but horror games always use them. How would players receive an AK47 that doesn't need to be reloaded, though? Should I care?

Depends on how "arcadie" your "horror" game is.

If you're just shootin zombs for shits and grins, then you probably wanna nix it.

If you're doing some ultra realism dark horror immersion bit, then you could be doubly cruel, have clips, and when you reload, you ditch the old clip, losing whatever ammo was left in it - so you must make the critical decision: reload now and lose those few bullets, or risk having to reload in a tight spot.

It's all these people that have never tried to develop a game, or even design anything.
They simply have fun with what they're told is fun. They're told the gameplay is good, so they're good with it. They're told the UI is fine, so they're fine with it.
It's easy for them, the only thinking they have to do is finding a way to justify liking it so they can go out into the public and defend liking it.
>>
>>122324165
Think of quests you enjoyed in games you've played. Strip them down to their most basic elements, and try to figure out what it is specifically that you liked about them.

Humor is always a good thing to improve quests, but that requires you to actually be funny, which can be difficult.

I have experimented with engine writing when I was just beginning years ago while I was still learning the basic-intermediate stuff.

Now I don't simply because I realize even as a hobby developer, turning out a result even if it isn't exactly as you imagined is better than reinventing the wheel to do so.

As for metaprogramming, while I haven't done any so far, I imagine you could in an online game use a separate program for chatting with other players if you wanted and have your main game read from that program. Though going by the nature of how obscure metaprogramming is and this being agdg, I'll assume that's just a buzzword trolling question. Building out APIs for other programs to use and to use for the program itself just isn't that great an idea in my mind for most things I would be doing. Honestly, before this post I had never heard of metaprogramming and just looked it up.

>>122326830
Work isn't really coding in the sense you'd be used to. On a given day I could be writing tests, discussing design, having meetings. Coding is part of it, but typically in my work by the time I'm coding I already know close to exactly what I'm going to be writing. Of course there's things that go wrong, incorrect assumptions and so forth that require redesign. In months I've only written a few thousand lines simply because the system can't afford to break or being dirtied by the type of coding you might do in hackathon type writing, which is somewhat what I used to do for hobbydevving

Now I use a lot more principles that I've learned from work to design and develop my work.

>how do you stay motivated to code outside of work?
Besides a lack of coding at work, if I don't feel like coding, I don't.
I don't need to become some successful dev even if I'd like to. I'd love to be self employed, but my job isn't bad and I have plenty of time being young

(saying a new feature "should work" is waaaay too vague. How should it work? sometimes it feels like our team is freelancing with how much we argue with product just to try to get some kind of actionable requirements...)

it is less about staying up all night and more that it drained away my passion for coding. I don't hate it, but it is now just a thing to be done. Part of the cycle.

It is used to be something I could never get enough of. I would code on the train. I would code at home. Any break I had I would be working on something.

These days I am just tired. I get home and the first thing I feel like doing is laying down or playing something mindless..

Any kind of reflection is sort of a type of metaprogramming.

Anything to do with macros in languages like Lisp is metaprogramming.

Any kind of code generation is metaprogramming.

If you've ever used eval(), a function that retrieves a Class given a string name, or iterated over the properties of an object generically, that's probably also mettaprogramming.

Fuck, template functions is metaprogramming.

Every single time Unity wants to update it tries to redownload and update the entire thing. All 6+ gigabytes. It's kind of annoying. Is this supposed to be happening? There's no way they actually expect me to download the entire thing every time there's a little bugfix.

What is a good way to let the player know they've completed the mission X out of Y ways? As in if they replayed it they might get a better score/ending/reward? Just go full on fourth wall breaking and have a stat or achievement saying they've completed 4/5 mission endings?

I ran some tests and I'd only give it an average score.
The 90's fingerless gloves are a questionable design choice and I think the outfit is a tad boring, though this could be from the artistic limitations. If it retained the frills from the reference photo it might look more interesting. I'm not sure about her exposed tummy, I don't like it, but I think that's too much of a personal opinion to factor in. The feet aren't detailed at all, so I've no idea what you wanted there, but my suggestion would be some tall sandals or something. I like her headband.

Honestly, how many developers, that aren't Bethesda's in-house studio and Id, can you name that offer real mod support? Map/track/level/course editors don't count and custom skins only gets half a point.
Also what mods can you come up with for story-based 2D pixel action-platformer that wouldn't better off as a whole new game?

I was creating a system to support translations

The idea is simple
>Map every single string that will be used for any visible text to a database
>langmap_id, langmap_value, langmap_name
The Id is just a unique reference id
The value is the actual text to be displayed
The name is used for
1) Descripting what is being said "Button_Text_Attack_1" is something that could exist
2) Automatically generating enums with a simple script reading from the table

Once you have that, you create a system that caches all values. By default you would read from the file which could easily be comma/tab delimited and write a dictionary<enum (id/ints), string (value)> which will contain every string in the game. If this is too large (probably won't be) you can reduce the size by loading only string you need per level, but that's another sack of tomatos.

From there you have a dictionary the maps the enums you generated that are set to int values, to string which represent the text you should use.
When coding you can say "LangMapping.GetText(LangMappingId.Button_Text_Attack_1);" which will return the text from the given dictionary.

NOW, what you allow your users to do is put files in a folder that can be read for languages. When you start the game you read the file names (or data if you want) to determine what you will call the language, then when the user switches to that language, you load the file and parse it into the dictionary.

The troubles will be, "How do you change the language on the fly?". You can't, you'll need to either reload the entire level/scene, or create a system that allows you to register every entity that uses a string, so that you can update those entities when you change the language. I think that's a bit ridiculous, so I would say "Load everything from the dictionary every time instead of caching it because an enum/int based dictionary is really fast" and "When you change languages, reload whatever you are doing so those reload the dict ref

I didn't really get anything done all weekend so I'm a bit worried if I'll make it in time for the jam, since every day from now until the end of the jam is going to be a work day, but we'll see. I'm actually feeling pretty confident about the gameplay, it's the user experience I think I'm going to be spending a lot of time on.

Anyway, here's my level editor that's not actually part of the game, but hopefully it means all my levels can be handled by a single room, which isn't really the Game Maker default.

im developing a 2d rpg much like the early final fantasy's without a engine, still noob so this is the best way for me.

i need to make a decision on sprite sizes.

i want the player(s) to be 32x32 for better detail, so im guessing the norm is to then have environment tiles be 16x16??

also for huge games with 100's of tiles 32x32 also means half the code...

I tried to make the basic stuff (shooting an arrow, single punch) have less godly names, and put the god parts for the combos and aura stuff. The names all work as well if you remove the god names so if you don't like explicit references to Japanese gods just take them away.

Also the name for the single punch is pretty shit, sorry.

Okay, maybe it isn't an exact representation but a lot of the elements are there and it's lots of fun to play.

Only when the screen is panning, spawn them at random y values just outside the screen so snow is already populating the space outside of the camera's view. Keep all the snow in camera's view spawning as is.

i wish it was more than a week, it feels like too little time...
>>
>>122352868
A week is more than enough time, you just have to exercise discipline on the scope of your game.

scope, mate

You also have to be competent. That's the problem.

What's a good engine for making text-adventure style games? One that allows turn-based, Roguelike combat would be great.
>>
>>122353203
Roguelikes are not text-adventures. Those are two seperate genres.

r8 this m8s
>Characters have 3 skill slots and an additional special learning skill slot
>Any skill can be assigned to the learning skill slot. Fighting a few battles with it equipped allows you to learn it permanently and assign it to a normal slot.
>Learning a new skill permanently boosts the character's stats by a small number. Learning skills is the only way to progress.

What happens when all slots are full but you want a new ability

>kutatus starts tutoral streams
>all of it is fucking content-blocked
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I mean text adventure in terms of interface ("go north", "attack orc") but Roguelike in terms of content (rooms have monsters, monsters have treasure, equip treasure, fight more monsters).

I've seen some MUDs that'd fit the bill, although I'm thinking single-player.

>following a tutorial unironically

You have to dump one ability to start learning a new one. This is intended to make the player keep experimenting.
>>
>>122353661
After unassigning an ability you've learned you can reassign it later though. You have a list of learned skills.

A game in which you must memorize a single long string of inputs in order to progress through the 2.5 hour long adventure. The game offers compelling storytelling and cinematic content to keep the player enticed.

So you make shovelware to survive?
>>
>>122354730
no, shovelware is where you pay indians to reskin crap so you can pump out tons of crap and earn pennies from each one like the plot of office space.
that's way too much effort for me, i just make good things and charge a reasonable price.
>>
>>122355545
ok be honest, don't you think that the average quality for eroge is pretty bad? maybe you're an exception but still
>>
>>122355685
i wouldnt know, i dont play games i make em.
>>
>>122355685
I find a lot of well established ero developers put a lot of effort into their games, despite the low production costs.
