For PlayStation emulators, do you think it's better to have one memory card per game or let the user manage the memory cards manually?

Do you think splitting the individual save blocks in different files makes sense or would it just be a pointless gimmick?
>>
>>122272567
One memory card per game means you don't have to worry about space and some games can really eat it. The only annoyance with this is when games read each others save data.
>Do you think splitting the individual save blocks in different files makes sense or would it just be a pointless gimmick?
It would be a pointless gimmick as there is no functional use for it.
>>
>>122272567
>Do you think splitting the individual save blocks in different files makes sense or would it just be a pointless gimmick?
As in you just have a save for a game instead of a memory card and the emulator just make the game see that as a memory card?

Because yes that's a pretty fucking good idea.

As long as tools to easily swap .mcr into that or that format back into .mcr exist.
>>
>>122273161

Yeah I agree it's the most pragmatic choice. It's just... dull you know. Also it requires special casing multi-disc games that need to use the same memorycard image, I guess this could be handled using the game serial number or something like that.

How many PSX games read other game's saves? I remember MGS of course but I don't think I ever played an other game that did that.

>>122273487

What use do you see for it? It seems shuffling saves around would be tedious and a bit pointless. The only point I can see is if one game's memory card becomes full you can delete some saves from your favorite file explorer instead of doing it from the BIOS/game interface.

In the "pointless but fun" feature list I also though about embedding the saves as metadata in an image file containing the save icon/text (like what you see in the BIOS memory card manager). But that's just breaking the compatibility with existing formats for no good reason.
>>
>>122273850
If I wanna find a save with memcards I need to open it, but you're right that's technically fixed with individual per game memcards but that has some limitation so you would need a way to easily create and swap them on the fly while in game if you really want something that has as little flaw as possible.

> The only point I can see is if one game's memory card becomes full you can delete some saves from your favorite file explorer instead of doing it from the BIOS/game interface.
So you're talking about memcard folders, I was thinking more about something that's totally separate from that and just store saves individually kinda like savestates.

Question about PS1 ReDUMPs

when I downloaded some of these, they had multiple bin files...

Like in the 7z, it would be something like:

"megaman legends.cue"
"megaman legends (cd1).bin"
"megaman legends (cd2).bin"

...I tried burning the images to a disc, and the ps1 wouldnt read it :?

Also: some emulators wont read these ... Personally I edit the cue to list just the main binary file (read: biggest Bin file lol), but that's obviouslty not the right way... is there a proper method or something?

What exactly is the point of the second bin with most of these? Can anyone give a small explanation of what they do.
>>
>>122274718
>So you're talking about memcard folders, I was thinking more about something that's totally separate from that and just store saves individually kinda like savestates.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Isn't a memcard folder about storing saves individually?

>>122276545

You can play those games on your console if it's modchipped, otherwise it'll refuse to boot non-authentic PSX CDs. I think you need verbatim whatever CD-Rs too otherwise the drive might have trouble reading the burned disc since the signal intensity is much weaker on burned CDs.

Mega Man Legends has two *tracks*, not CDs. If that's what your dump says it wasn't correctly labeled:

214 Apr 26 2015 Mega Man Legends (USA).cue
465M Apr 26 2015 Mega Man Legends (USA) (Track 1).bin
36M Apr 26 2015 Mega Man Legends (USA) (Track 2).bin

Typically PSX games use the first track to store the code and assets while the other tracks contain the music (although different layouts are possible).

If you only burn the first track at best your game won't have any music and at worse it won't work at all. You have to burn all the tracks. The cue sheet will tell the burning software how to layoutu the tracks on the disc.

So basically you need a modchipped console, CD-Rs that can be read by the console firmware and CD burning software capable of handling cue sheets. For a few PAL games you'll also need the subchannel data for the libcrypt protection but burning it might be tricky since it involves corrupt subchannel data.
>>
>>122277795
>I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Isn't a memcard folder about storing saves individually?
A memcard folder would just be an unpacked .mcr, what I'm thinking about would just store every save in the same place and when you load a game the emulator recognize what saves correspond to that game and make it so that the game can recognize those save like if they were in a memory card.
>>
Has anyone tried dolphin or pcsx2 on the Microsoft surface pro 4. The i5 4gb ram or 8gb ram version? And how did they run if so?
>>
>>122278404

Mmh, I think I understand. You think that would be better than a single mcr per game?

WHY ARE N64 EMULATORS SO HORRIBLE

>>
>>122282093

What are you waiting to start writing your own senpai?
>>
>>122281616
Not many but it could make it easier to change what is currently in the memcard when the game accesses it which might help circumvent slot limitation in some games or help with games using other games save.
>>
>>122283357

Changing the image dynamically as the game is running sounds like a very bad idea to me.

>>122282093
>WHY ARE N64 EMULATORS SO HORRIBLE

http://tasvideos.org/BizHawk.html
>>
>>122283479
As long as you don't change anything when the game is accessing the memory card nothing should break.
>>
>>122283718

That's assuming the game doesn't keep some data about the memory card in RAM. Maybe things like current save file for instance?

It might work but it sounds risky.
>>
>>122272567
Manual since there are situations where you CANNOT get a game to precisely emulate console behavior with "one memory card per game."
>>
>>122285485

Can you give me an exemple of such a game? Are you talking about things like the psycho mantis fight in MGS?
>>
>>122255131

Thanks, worked.

Now the question is, what broke in the first place?
>>
>>122283893
I mean what I proposed is probably a lot of work with a lot of problems for very little convenience, a choice between per game memcard, shared memcard and an integrated memcard editor is probably way easier and about as convenient most of the time.

for some reason there's a little piece of foam inside the controller that handles inputs by touching a contact. after using it a lot, sometimes a little, the foam will compress and the controller will start registering random shit.

the easiest solution is to open the controller up and plump up the piece of foam with tape or something so it can reach the contact.

You might not have noticed any problems with MML, because all of the MML games have a second audio track that's actually just junk data and is never actually used by the game.

They are the only games that I know of that do this though.
>>
>>122299115

I really want to try something like that with the PSX but the size of the savestate makes it prohibitive for long replays. The video framebuffer is the main issue, with older 2D consoles that used tiles and sprites it's less of an issue.
>>
>>122300000

The author shamelessly announced he's taking donations when his emulator can barely run anything because he knows that as long as he teases idiots with progress they will keep throwing money at him just to see more. The genius of this idea is that once you get the first commercial game running you can improve compatibility by putting in relatively little effort and at the same time make it seem like you're making some amazing breakthroughs one after another because your audience doesn't know any technical stuff and your software is closed source so they can't see it only took you several lines of code.

Yeah, it's perfect.
>>
>>122298491
Stillborn at the moment. SP has his focus on churning out a stable, usable iOS release at the moment. Work on the various cores probably won't resume until he's done with that.
>>
>>122302092
By the time he's finished all other platforms will be in need of an update again and by the time that's done iOS will be broken again.

He will never escape the vicious cycle.
>>
>>122302092
>usable iOS release at the moment.
Why? Apple won't even officially acknowledge it on their store. Only jailbreakers will have it and it has to be a tiny minority of people who will use it.

As niche as it may be, RetroArch is actually very popular with the iOS jailbreak crowd. SP feels it's worth it to deliver something good to that scene.

SP is like a flight of fancy dev. He starts things, doesn't finish them, neglects things, lets things break for months or years, does totally incomprehensible jumps from one segment of his project to the next day to day, and it is nearly impossible to predict what he will do. The project just has no coherent vision or structure.
>>
>>122304262
SP doesn't have the equipment to debug the Wii port effectively(USB gecko) especially for something that doesn't boot anymore. Toadking does but he's been busy with other things.

Nice to hear that the latency problem is steadily being resolved, but the issue is many people are still using older Android devices, which may or may not have the necessary hardware or software updates. They'd rather hack up an old version of RA Wii, add some useless shit to it, add their name to the 'fork' and try to gain some fame off it. Or create a hacked-up libretro port version, backport it to VBA GX or SNES9x GX or some other useless shit and leave RA to die.

Today everybody wants to be a special snowfake with their 15 minutes of fame, nobody wants to contribute to shit, nobody wants to help with shit, it has to be worth their while and it *has* to help up their e-peen or reddit popularity.

At least Xbox 360 emulation has a bright future. Xenia which is still is an early work in process can run a few games at full speed on weak mobile processors. But I think SP said that the 360 CPU is actually not much more powerful than the Wii's CPU.

PS3 emulation will probably be lucky to end up as good as Saturn emulation. Maybe in 30 years ARM might become faster than x86 and PS3 emulation will be more possible?

It literally isn't though, blurring *is* a fllter. Linear filter, gaussian filter...

I think you have a wrong idea about what filters and shaders can do, maybe you think of those terrible hqx filters or ugly obvious scanlines. In reality filters can be rather subtle and make the image easier on the eyes.

I don't have an example at hand but I'm sure other people in this general will be able to give you examples, that's pretty much all we do here.

Here's a super easy way to buff Quina up. Go to Oeilvert, go inside the temple, and in the first screen walk around and try to encounter the statue enemies that clone your characters. Wait until it clones a character, then kill the clone. Do this three times, since that's the max amount of times it will clone characters, and then kill the statue enemy itself. You'll get about 7000+ experience points. If you can get Virus status cast on Zidane somehow, Quina will get even more all to itself. Only enemy I can think of off the top of my head that can cast Virus is the Yan enemies on Vile Island, off the coast of the Outer Continent, and they might outright slaughter you before that happens. Might not be worth it.

Good luck, anon!

http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps/197338-final-fantasy-ix/faqs/21725

Once you get to Disc 4, a lot of locations will be closed off permanently, and some items will become impossible to get. Many of them are admittedly not that important, but off the top of my head, I know for a fact that Vivi's Octagon Rod (which teaches him Firaga, Thundaga, and Blizzaga) cannot be acquired in Disc 4. This is a VERY important item, and there may be others like it, so go through that list and double check if you have them or not.

>>
>>122398289
> having non mainstream passions makes you a degenerate now

Only a degenerate would think this
>>
>>122399392
The game is easy enough that you can have literally any party and steamroll once you have good gear, spells, and abilities.

That said, if you ask me, Eiko is much better than Garnet, and Vivi isn't as useful as a properly built-up Quina or Freya. Once you get the best stuff for each character and abilities like Auto-Regen, you can even go balls to the wall and forgo all magic, healing, buffs, etc, and go for a pure DPS party made up of Zidane, Steiner, Freya and Amarant, and never break a sweat.

I will say this: if you plan on taking on the game's super boss, you WILL want Zidane (mandatory), Eiko, Quina, and either Steiner or Freya as your party. You're definitely gonna want to build Quina up some more, and get a few more key abilities like Angel's Snack.

>>
>>122400606
Also keep in mind I'm talking strictly Disc 4 end game here. Your party is fine at the moment, though I would have switched Garnet to Eiko starting from the moment she goes mute, given she becomes unreliable to use at that point in the game, and kept her on the team from that point on. Vivi is still fine to use, but again, his end game is not as good as some of the other characters. His end game basically consists of abusing elemental weaknesses with -aga spells and Flare, optimally alongside equipping Reflectx2 and casting spells off Reflected allies. Meteor is unreliable (sometimes does massive damage, sometimes subpar damage, sometimes fails entirely), and his "ultimate" spell damages everyone unless properly equipped, and is as long as a summon, so it's meh. I'd much rather kill 99 dragons and have Freya's Dragon's Crest hit for 9999 every time.

Well, your mileage may very well vary. Most 2D/3D games on the PS1 have static 2D backdrops with 3D characters on top of them, and IMO it looks disgusting when you have super hi-res, low-poly characters walking on top of low-res pixelated backgrounds, which completely breaks the immersion.

FFT, however, has 2D character sprites on top of 3D backdrops, and it actually doesn't look THAT bad when said backdrops are hi-res, even if the sprites remain low-res. I think I'd still prefer everything be the same res in the end, though.

Settings are fine. The problem is many of those settings are there for compatibility and performance reasons, many of which are now redundant and some of them can cause problems on some games unless set to something specific. Some of the "enhancement" settings can also cause problems, like some of the texture filtering settings can cause black or colored outlines to appear on text and backgrounds, and many people are none the wiser as to what could be causing it unless they sit there and tweak shit until they figure it out, make a thread on NGemu or ask here, etc.

>all those things are pretty much automatic, and the "best" settings are irrelevant, and need only be tweaked
Nothing ought to need to be tweaked. And no, settings are not automatic. Only thing that's automatic are the "Fast" and "Nice" presets in Pete's plugins, which often don't deliver the best results.

All ps1 bios for pal/ntsc-u/ntsc-j
>>
>>122418716
Yeah, the "Nice" settings still have a few things disabled for performance reasons that are no problem at all on hardware from the last 15 years.

>>122418796
Pretty much. You will need the other two scph files if you ever want to emulate PAL and NTSC-J PlayStation games.
>>
>>122418716
>no, unless guided
they all work. some not as well as others, but w/e. they all work better than mednafen for the most part.
>nothing ought to be.
you ought not be, but here you are, trying to defend your autistic nonsense.
>not automatic
yeah, they pretty much are.
>incomplete effects, and i'm not aware
this is why you're such a faggot. you would rather put a newb through hell than allow them to notice some weird thing on a game they probably aren't going to play.

I need not say anything more to you than to simply invite everyone to check out NGemu's ePSXe forum. Hundreds of threads of users having audio problems, video glitches, memory card issues, even BSODs now from the looks of it. Not to mention all the "whuts da bess plugin for muh geam" threads.

I reinstate: the only problems people ever have with Mednafen is BIOS, rip, or UI-related.

Faggot.

Where is this scan mode and file-showing options?

Am I stupid for using a crt shader on GBA?
>>
>>122420569
No, but you're stupid for forcing that aspect ratio on GBA.

Is this the right one?

Yes.

Nevermind, It's right in the same page.
>>
So If I'm using Mednafen I need to find game rips that come in .cue format or something?
>>
>>122421981
Yes.

On one hand, you're not stupid for using a CRT shader on the GBA because you can display a GBA on a CRT natively thanks to the Game Boy Player for the GameCube, and the GBA had a lot of SNES ports (such as the pictured FFV)

However, you ARE stupid for using a CRT shader because they look fucking disgusting, and that one you posted seriously makes me want to vomit. That's not what a CRT should look like

THIS is what a CRT should and does look like.
>>
>>122423002
That's impossible to immitate

Please, try crt-royale yourself and try to get anywhere near that.

Copying the link straight from my torrent tracker gave me a different link than what's on rutracker, but it's just:

The GBP scaled it by x2 nearest before sending it to the CRT though, so it wouldn't really have looked like your pic.
>>
>>122423002
That looks like a really shitty TV.

I have no idea why you'd want to use that
>>
>>122423002
>>THIS is what a CRT should and does look like.

Please stop acting like there is a single standard of how a CRT should look like. There a huge amount of variance in CRTs like screen size, phosphor size, phoshor layout, scanline focus, convergance, geometry, etc.

We get it, you like the CRT have but stop acting like it's the only valid look for a CRT.

What is the best Mednafen frontend with the most options in the GUI?

Do I want win-x64 or win-x86? I'm using 64 bit Windows 7.
>>
>>122427528
win-x64

x86 is 32-bit
>>
What keys do you even use to work Retroarch? I can move up and down on the menu but what makes you go forward or backwards?
>>
>>122430653
X is select and Z is back.
>>
>>122430653
Whatever is mapped to the A and B buttons, it's controller based.
>>
Is there some sort of configuration that must be done in RetroArch before it will work? I've downloaded the PSX Mednafen core, put the right BIOS files in the right spot and am loading .cue files but RetroArch crashes the moment I load it.

When I tried with just Mednafen and a frontend it worked fine.

How half assed? I thought VBA-GX's GUI was decent.
>>
>>122432959
Then why not make VBA-GX's GUI a libretro front instead?
