TAKE YOUR FUCKING TURNS edition

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based strategy game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a strategy game.

I've had an idea for a game ever since I saw this picture in the general, but I'd like to see if anyone would be interested first.

A triathlon game.

Basically, three consecutive games (one EA, one MA, one LA) in which you play the same nation (or a descendant nation, see picture) in all games. It'd be a bit of a commitment because it would mean joining three games at once, but I think it would be pretty cool.
>>
>>122209737
It'd be better if they were simultaneous instead of consecutive.

If you make them consecutive it'll not only take much longer before the whole thing is finished (which means a bigger chance of people getting bored or otherwise quitting), you'll also get people who die early on and then have to wait months before the next one starts.
>>
>>122209737
>It'd be a bit of a commitment
M8, roughly 33% of players go AI on turn 10 or something.

I do have a feeling. A feeling that you're coming dangerously close to avatarfagging, which will grant you permaban.
>>
>>122210559
I'm sorry images trigger you, mate, but they're just that. It would be avatarfagging if I used them EVERY time I made a post, but I don't.

Also, unless something's changed recently and I'm not aware of it avatarfagging != permaban.
>>
>>122210882
That's pretty much confirmed by mods at this point.

Anyway, just don't be obnoxious, please.

AND DISPEL YOUR NEXUS, OR I'LL FUCKING STAB YOU, I SWEAR ON ME MUM.
>>
>>122211054
Alright, alright, I'll tone it down a bit. Just havin' some fun though.

NO
>>
>>122209737
for what purpose. it adds nothing to the game, aside for the fact it will take a century to find few people willingly to join 3 games at once.
>>
>>122211054
I've never heard of it being against the rules before, honestly.

Also, if he's playing in other games and only using the character for his R'lyeh game, I don't see any problem with it. He's already identifying himself for the game that he's in, and the pictures often serve as a relevant reaction image.

Yes, I realize that I am explicitly encouraging an animeposter. May pankoman have mercy on my soul.
>>
>>122211624
For what purpose do we play Dominions at all?

Because it's fun.
>>
>>122212165
http://www.4chan.org/rules

Fuck off.
>>
>>122208281
That'd be a bit silly then. There are about 50 gem-events related to magic/drain scales. This is generous, since it includes several unique events, nation-only events, and about a dozen events that are dependent on other scales as well (luck, heat, death, generally).
Given there are 7 different settings for magic/drain scales, one step in magic scales unlocks about 7 new magic events. There are literally hundreds of different events. Magic scales unlock a tiny fraction of them.

This is true even when considered in the limited area of gem-events, of which there are about 150, IIRC. A 5% increase in gem events is not worth 40 points on its own.
>>
>>122211624

I'd do it.

>>122212654
>Turn 33
>>
>>122212369
New guy but calling it a 5% increase isn't exactly honest, as the good/bad event effect has a way bigger effect than the 5% event chance, and listing the number of events isn't that relevant because event chances aren't equal. I know you mentioned uniques but common vs uncommon is more relevant.

Your conclusion is true, and even the implied conclusion of 'the gem increase alone isn't worth the cost of luck scales' is mostly true, but your argument isn't sound. Valid, but unsound.
>>
>>122212369
>>122214997
Also, doesn't high magic scales also affect how many gems you get per event, not just the number of gem events?

>3 years worth of luck

I'm just gonna gear some retarded looking dust king down the line, I guess.
>>
>>122217841
I know them feels.
I got 2 lightless lanterns a flame helmet and some shit.
also maybe 20-30 gems.
luck a shit.
>>
>>122218789
I'm actually swiming in gems. Something like 15-20 gems from luck per turn at this point.

Those items are junk though. Literally what's the point.
>>
>>122219010
On the one hand it makes sense that they patched out the chance of getting artifacts through luck events.

On the other hand, most of the stuff you do get is awful.
>>
>>122219010
the crown and skull talismen have uses if you've got vine ogre summoners or assassin respectively. The shield you can just throw on a commander to give he a little better protection from random arrows.
>>
>>122217841
What I end up doing is equiping the indies I use to make forts with.

>>122219213
Makes a good point about two of the items though.
>>
>>122215542
Scales affect which events are unlocked, and the higher gem events require higher magic. So in other words, you get an event from a list of 25 events instead of 20 events, and the 5 extra events give more gems (simplifying, but that's how it works)
>>
>>122219313
I get that, but I think the amount of gems you get is also affected.

Like, you can get the same event (for example the troll cave, or the one where you buy gems for 1 gold), but instead of getting like 5-10 gems you get 15-25 and an item.
>>
>>122218789
>>122217841
i got 3 mages with paths and gems not native to my nation(which together brought me to depth 2 of each before boosters), one silver mine, 3 free labs, a shower of all gems, among which 30 earth gems, a thousand and a gold, an army of shitty monsters( no upkeep!).
items were crappy: no booster, but a wraith crown is worth 40 death gems so it can't be shit. a couple of crappy sword and a bow and misc items such as slave collar. notable mention fire in a jar, clam of pearls and the item that summon 3 vine men for one of my assassins.

and that's only the first 26 turns!

also my neighbour donated me 2 tower of the silver order and one desert of Sigh. they just happen to let me recruit mages with exactly all the paths my nation doesn't have.
>>
>>122219541
There are duplicate events, eg for "The Lair of a hideous troll has been found" there's three events, one requires at least magic 1, one requires magic 2 and the last magic 3.

Here's the battle report, as promised -

The reason that he came out ahead should be quite clear, given the sheer number of mages that he brought. We'll have a Rain of Stones party in the Sinks next turn, and they're all invited.

Also, a number of my troops ended up retreating to the province from which their attack originated, since I had a dusk elder take it intending to hit one of his Marble Oracles. They'll be taking the fury road home through Agartha's forts.

new guy, but it's a bit between what you two are saying. They aren't one of the best MCs (being nonunique and not requiring cross paths this shouldn't be surprising) and even most MCs have counters from most magic paths now.

If the mages aren't properly scripted they won't take down the wraith lord. and about half the things mentioned in among the counters apply to any SC, even the immune to most things golem, and some the wraith lord actually is better able to counter.

That said, outfitting for defense buff seems silly, and not what the wraith lord could benefit from. improving MR, protection and elemental resists are better. Unless he's got something preventing attacks, he could easily get 10+ attacks per turn on him, which means he'd be be at def 13 by the end and getting some hits. High defense is best for massed troops and light thugs who won't be surrounded as often.

I suspect that it happened because the admin changed the mod file from Cataclysm to /domg/clysm.

Suggestions?
>>
>>122266278
This is a very old and very well-known bug. It always happens with mods that replace all nations, like Cataclysm or Nationgen.

The easiest way to fix it is to first load a game using a different mod, exit that, and then load the Cataclysm game.
>>
>>122266278
load one of your other normal games and try to exit in various ways ( save and exit/exit without save) then load the crapacylsm game. try this enough times and it will eventually work. enjoy do this every turn.

The single strongest battlefield Evo 5 spell, and it only requires D2 to cast.
>>
>>122272669
So you can cast one free MR Negates evo per battle. That's pretty much nothing, especially compared to schools like Earth and Astral which do get tempgems and have spells that can change the tide of battle in a single cast.
>>
>>122272771
None of those spells are available at level 5 schools, and all of them require a communion, geared mage or having a nation built around them (foul vapors)
>>
>>122272669
It's pretty underwhelming when countered though.

Especially by a simple Ghost Candle, Will-of-the-Wisps or Howl. Or by one turn 1 flying unit.

But yeah, Wind of Death and similar stuff will wipe you the fuck out from the face of this Earth if you're playing against spooky nations.
>>
>>122272848
Yes, and?

Saving one gem (and not even that, considering you pay the construction cost up front) on a straight forward evocation that might get resisted or evo-catched really isn't going to change anything. Even if that spell was as OP as you're making it out to be, you could achieve the same thing just by giving your mage one D gem.

Alternatively, enable any mods that modify nations, press 'create game', then 'cancel', then the game will appear when you next try to open it.

Exalted is juvenile powerwank: the rpg, so no respect is due even is that was Exalted. Which it isn't, since it's just TTGL with a shitty Exalted tagline added. But then, TTGL is juvenile powerwank: the anime, so I guess it fits.

Stop being a retard.
>>
Sometimes I keep forgetting I'm not on /tg/. Thanks, /domg/.
>>
>>122278553

Exalted is one of the few games that doesn't just slap a set of shitty stats onto an existing mythology or fictional universe, and instead does a bit of a mash-up, like dnd back in the day. In this stale ttrpg future, it was a breath of fresh air. Even if it had gaping flaws.

TTGL is tightly written, and drawn well, even if it is as retarded as the vast majority of anime. It's no mushishi, but it's at least got some epic moments that vast majority of the genre doesn't even begin to reach.

>>
>>122279265
No, entry-level means it's highly accessible and well-liked by people who are unfamiliar or ignorant of the genre.

played first multiplayer game with a friend recently
i was ma ermor and he was agartha

he had like 150 units in one of his armies, he's not big on rts but im impressed how well he played

i had 3000 skeletons in one army at one point

my question is how do you actually play ermor?
cause all i did was expand, let population die off, make a billion spectators for research and went around picking up new units with other commanders

is there like a right way to play them? it felt very braindead desu
>>
>>122285934
you dummp all the scales but luck and maybe magic, you need high dominion.
with the points you either get an awake pretender which can summon your better mages and then either expand or research.

after that you use your good mages to do stuff while protected by thousand of shitty undeads.
lictors are summonable elite troops but you need a decent bless. a good bless for ermor must include either nature or death ( most likely death :D) because your free spawned knights only have 8 hp.

you can also have a dormant or imprisoned god and take 3 major blesses ( try N9D9W9 or some shit like that) or 2 major + 1 minor. N) is good because it lets them regen hp and they can't do that without a laboratory.

in case you don't have an awake god with high death magic you need to wait 3 turns and then empower in death magic one of your spectators.

Dominions 4 is about casting the right spells with your mages, possibly hunting for ways to get mages with even more different paths, while also having some troops, so definitely dragging thousand of undeads around the map isn't all Ermor's gameplay, but when playing against noobs or AI you don't even get to try to get the most our of your mages.

Xibalba is pretty much a wasteland shithole with little to no bloodhunting provinces.

Your 3000 skeletons would die in extremely short order against 30 h1 priests and a line of blockers, or a single Fire Storm.

Ermor can only be played that way against noobs.

That you're thinking in terms of numbers of units, rather than battlefield clear>chaff>single target evo>SCs>battlefield clear means you haven't gotten into the meat of the game yet.

The two canonical ways to play Ermor to victory is either

a) Take a heavy bless for your Lictors, and focus on getting as many of them out as you can. Ideally some kind of B9+stuff.

b) Use the undeads as raiders and chaffs and get enough research and boosters to use Dusk Elders to drop the big D 'fuck you' spells like Bone Grinding and Wailing Winds and Wind of Death and so on to just annihilate people that bring undead counters to the field.

You can also play a pretender-focused Ermor. Especially with some cool immortal dude and S6/rainbow build. Sould Drain is a hell of a drug, and S6 basically gives you nice late-game tools. Rainbow also gives you more gems earlier, whic means that you'll be pretty diverse when the mid-game comes.

Also, Ermor really needs indie mages for research. The whole "no research" myth is false, but indies really help to speed things up, especially with imprisoned tri-bless god.

>>
>>122296342

Not him, but at a guess? Make Staffs of Elements as a bonus, with a cheap imprisoned scales Pretender.

A4E4's also alright for sacred blaster mages, and Helheim can do Thunderstrike spam with Vanjarls. It won't stand up to a serious bless strategy, but it's cheap and you can get really good scales as well.
>>
>>122295367
So sue me. Anime-styled fanart is the closest thing to actual anime screenshots anyway.

>>122296342
That's a very typical light magebless.

It's main advantage is that it's cheap, so it allows for great scales, but it also makes Helheim's thunderstrike spammers more accurate and has them lasting a bit longer.

It's almost useless as a troop buff, but that's not the point.

Helheim's sacreds aren't really worth a bless.
Their cav is good on it's own, and obviously W9 makes it better. But their valkyries do what they do fine without any bless at all.
You 'could' do N9 for elf thugs...
>>
>>122301913
>Their cav is good on it's own
>W9 makes it better
It's not though. It's really overpriced and weak compared to most other cavalry. Glamour is their only saving grace. Their non sacreds are arguably better than sacreds, because at least they get javelins to soften up the target.

W9 is pretty much the only thing that keeps it alive.
>>
>>122301913
>>122302503
I wouldn't use Helhirdings regardless of bless.

Valkyries are nice because they're stealthy fliers, which opens up some neat options both strategically and tactically, but Helhirdings are pretty unimpressive within their niche.

Why are Kailasa and Bandar's Celestials so perfect? They're not naggy about proselytizing you and being strict like Mari or Gath's angels, they won't drink your blood and then kill you like Dakinis or Vampires, they're not furry sluts like Dryads or Kitsune, they're not dumb smelly scaled whores like nagas or sirens, and they're definitely not elves! The multiplayer is, even if you're the sort of person who normally doesn't play multiplayer. The single player is worth the price on sale.

this is entirely subjective, but in my fair opinion the single player of Dominion 4 is not worth 10$. and by a very long shot. it doesn't even have a shitty campaign and AI,even if cheating doesn't even require you to use spells to beat.
>>
>>122313843
There is. It's for tryhards
>>

If our standard is indie games, it's normal for a game to give you a ton of awesome tools and fall down a bit on making you need to use them. And all the nations and spells and stuff are still there, even if you don't really need to think critically about how to use or counter them.

>If our standard is indie games

that's a quite broad category. and yet 95 % of all indieshit games feature a singleplayer campaign and a playable story where you get the sloppily use 70% of the game system more or less properly. And that's just the worst case.

playing against AI in dominions 4 is a very pale shade of 20% of the gameplay content and game strategy. and pretty boring unless you got an hardon for roleplaying.

btw my standards would be old mid-tier RTS you could grab at the supermarket for 9,99$, which still feature a long enough campaign.
i played some shitty ass strategy game from Paradox and AI was still challenging enough to let you use some of the game's content strategically and to avoid suiciding shit every turn into your provinces.

Lightless Lanterns are good (until you're at a point where you'd reach your key research targets within a year or two). Elemental royalty are good.

Beyond that, depending on how good troops you have or how much you value units over mages, it might actually be worth it to alchemize the gems. For example, I'd rather have double-blessed Jaguar Warriors or Revelers than an equally expensive amount of Fire Snakes. If you don't have such great troops, Fire Snakes are nice.

I used to think 50 Cent was a huge faggot until I read The 50th Law, he doesn't even drink or smoke weed and is basically a strategic mastermind with balls of steel.

His music really does suck though, but considering the target audience that's not surprising.
>>
>>122349706
Trade Winds is only really useful on coastal caps
Raven Feast is only useful if you cast plague on an enemy cap
Great Eagles are good for smashing down forts. Everything else, not really.
>>
>>122348385
empower to air 3, then with two air gems he can cast storm, then use Empower storm power to get to Air 4 and cast all those sweet lightning Evocations, Also if your A2s are "thuggable" (beefy health and protection with strong stats), you can use them to cloud trapeze into deep enemy territory and take lightly defended lands. Also mistform is a great self buff spell that will save your thug alot of pain and trouble
>>
>>122349706
All of those are good. Except maybe ghost wolves
>>
>>122349884
Draconians are trash though
>>
>>122349852
so air gems are only useful for evocations and storms?

Lightless lanterns. Just.. lightless lanterns.

Get fire kings. Fire Storm with them. Or gear them up, phoenix pyre + gear = weirdly amazing SCs.

Empower a blood guy and get arch devils. Empower a death mage and get skulls of fire.

>>122327553

Bow of War used to be cool guy, used for memes.

Now not so much. Golden arbalest/other things are all crap because they miss, get stopped by shields, cost gems, blah blah. Forged bows pretty much just get used on communion masters so you can use the fire command, and not risk your expensive mage as much as if you ordered his fifth command to be 'communion slave'. The reason you do this is guys go off script and cast heaps of stupid shit that makes communion slaves explode.
>>
>>122351343
>tfw bow of war doesn't shoot 50 arrows any more

>>
>>122349837
so let's say i have a 100 income coastal province. is it worth to trade winds of him if i have 40 air gems that i'm not using? also i don't have enough conj or construction researched
>>
>>122352345
No not really.
200 and above maybe
>>
>>122349920
Ehh kind of. But they're free after the initial investment, and that's pretty huge, since they're size 3 fliers.
>>
>>122352949
*size 4 I think cronemod might have made them size 3 or I may have just misremembered.
>>
>>122352949
They're size 4 fliers. But really, you should just use great eagles since you get 71+(14x) siege strength for 10 air gems with x being air paths over 3.
In comparison, Draconians get 4 siege strength at 64 siege strength for 45 gems. You do get a draconian chief that does summon 1 Draconian per turn though.
>>
>>122353306

Really, you should be using your air gems for boots for mobility and extra tstrikes, storm. Then later, all of them on air queens, gear for SCs, and the biggest spender by far, casts of mass flight, fog warriors, and thunder ward.

Who Knows

Illwinter make their decisions about balance, and by illwinter I mean kris, based on what people say on the 'official forums', aka desura. They listen more to people like ohlmann who've been playing the game since forever, but ohlmann has previously said things are bad or overpowered because he doesn't /like/ them. Basically the toxic memes from the old shrapnel forums means balance decisions about anything interesting or good will be essentially random.

The reason dom4 is still playable is that kris outpaces this by adding new content that is actually good. So bow of war sucks now, but magma children! And underwater greek ghosts!

I think you underestimate how annoying it is to siege a nature nation that actually built fortifications
>>
i'm fighting against a computer controlled player who spams seeking arrow. do you think it's worth giving my commanders missile protection robes?
>>
>>122354009

My view on that is that winning army fights is more important than sieging down castles. As one gives you land, gems, and gold, and the other gives you another recruitment centre where if you built your nation right you shouldn't need to rely on that, and should be building your own castles and running into gold issues from how fast you're making guys.

Put a few guys on top that can kill whatever is in the fort if it comes out, and park your chaff there in the meantime until your chaff > the big pile of wolves in the fort. If you don't have chaff, and desperately need forts, I don't even know which nation that is. I don't think it exists.

>>122354297

Yeah, but only on like, the guys who are actually important. And just give them an armour of knights or something. So like the 120 leadership guy leading the bulk of your troops? Yeah, him. The mage casting Army of Lead? That guy. The guy putting up Ground Army? Him too. The line of guys shooting magma eruption? They can tough it out.
>>
>>122355020
It doesn't matter how fucking great your army is if you can't crack a fort.
>>
>>122354297
Better yet, just move your dudes or put a dome up
>>
>>122355089

Does cracking forts give you gold?

Does it give you gems?

Does it kill enemy units?

Sieging a fort stops it recruiting. Most summoned units are trash. Fort under siege/can't break out = Problem Solved.

And you should have chaff around for chaff stuff, even if you don't use chaff as blockers (skelespam armies, for example). Guarding against flyers, baiting large evocs, baiting archery, etc. You pile unused chaff there until the fort cracks, then you move the chaff to the next fort. Sure, it takes a while. But in the meantime, you passed out A gems to your tstrikers, and won that battle you would have otherwise lost.

And if you are dead-set on cracking forts, it costs more gems, but gate cleavers and wall shakers are commander-portable and a hell of a lot less likely to just die under a hail of rocks or thunderbolts than a bunch of great eagles.
>>
>>122355441
Yes, cracking forts does give you all that
>>
>>122355441
Cracking forts fast prevents the enemy from preparing a counterattack.
You don't have to storm the fort with great eagles dummy. Plus Wallshaker gives you 25 siege for 15 gems vs 71 siege for 10 gems that one cast of eagles at base level does.
>>
>>122355458

Taking people's lands gives you that. People do not have forts on every province. The amount of gold and gems you gain by cracking a fort instead of MOVING ON AND TAKING ALL THEIR SHIT is incredibly marginal.

>>122355552

What prevents your enemy from 'preparing a counterattack' is defeating their armies in the field and then putting their forts under siege. Waiting around to crack a fort simply gives them time to replace their chaff and 'come back for anuvver go'.

Wallshaker is not great. Cleaver is a lot better. Wallshaker is useful because it also lets you spam a fantastic fear spell during battles.

And if you have magical enemies who 'prepare counterattacks' that take turns to set up but are somehow effective with no recruitment and no income, and yet they never attack your siege stacks, i'd like to know which games you play in so I can witness this craziness.
>>
>>122355721
People do tend to build forts on their good provinces though.
>>
>>122355721
Wallshaker's only good a commander that has no magic and Cleaver's kind of expensive for only 50 siege
>>
>>122355794

You get half the income just for sieging the thing. Then you get the rest once it comes down. Making sure your opponent is down and won't get back up is more important than eking out that last tiny bit of income. And putting forts under siege and winning every battle is more important than cracking forts, in that algorithm.
>>
>>122355941
Unless this is the early game, this isn't so much a thing. "winning every battle" isn't the same as smashing some fort pd.

One more month of Ermor slowly taking his toll.
He took and claimed 1 Throne from Sceleria and this turn he captured 1 remaining VP3 Throne from indie shits (that tough Wraith Lord did that). So he is only 3 VP from victory, prepare to celebrate, faggots.
On the other hand I tried to assault his Golems this turn and one of them got wrecked, maybe the second one was in danger too, but the wall of soullesses stood on my way.

Ulm, if is in the corner of your soul there is a slightest idea to actually win the game then THAT IS THE PERFECT TIMING TO BETRAY ERMOR. He encircled you, so you have even no rival to fight now. Join forces of Light and Fire. Cute Justice IS ALL LIE.

empowering one and casting storm let other A2 mages cast summon storm power and thunderstrike. which hurts a lot.
storm is valuable by itself as it shits on precision and flying if the enemy army has it.
with another A3 or by reinvigorating the first you can summon storm power with it and then burn a lot of gems to cast storm warriors, which is an incredible troop enancing spell.
i would like to remind you that high nature let you summon faerie courts(high conjuration) which have A3.
in the long run is worth it empowering to air 4 as it gives permanent access to boosters(up to air 6) so you can cast fog warriors turn 1 and lose less gems per cast, also you can summon queen of air with it or cast an army-ruining shimmering field.there is also staff of storm that let you have automatic storm at the start of the battle.all air mages can also cloud trapeze around the map so you can have a single first-turn fog warrior caster able to service any army, at least if you are on the defense.

if you don't care about long term plans or you don't have such ridicolous air gems reserve call of the winds and great eagles can help with patrolling or fort sieging. a big deal honestly.
every nation should aim to possess 4-5 winged shoes. it's a staple item just as dwarven hammer or lightless lantern. they let you move important mages, fresly recruited mages, prophets, thugs and pretender gods in your empire for turn efficiency or emergencies, and since you can put the shoes back into the lab afterward, you only need few pairs to service an entire empire.

>>122368049
>not putting midget revenge and 50 gems worth of other gear on your hoburg commanders.
>>
>>122368049
As a rule I don't thug anything with less than 25 HP.
>>
>>122368049
the problem with that is that you need only a 6 to come up in an exploding dice and suddenly your 25 defense or your 25 protection failed even if for a single blow.
and let's not talk about fatigue. if you are living you will always have 2-3-4 fatigue which result in an equivalent % of getting your protection fucked.
if you watch closely regular thugs fighting against anything that isn't tribe/militia PD you will notice that they always get 1-5 damage every other turn. it is therefore unsafe to thugh shit with less than 20 HP.
if you do it then you would have to overgear them and they might still be at a risk against decent/elite troops which a normal thug might tolerate.
you would need many good layers of avoidance: good protection + fatigue neutral + good defense or ethereality. also you need both armor and head covered. i would really be happy to have mistform in that case.

Only take every second turn. Others, hit end turn without moving anything.

Hardmode: No auto-recruit.

Take a rainbow pretender. 3 in every path.

Hardmode: Awake.

Harder hardmode: LA Pyth.

Play a crossbow nation without ever buying a crossbow.

Hardmode: Sloth3.

Take an a9 bless. On any nation.

Decide to only use one national path.

Hardmode: Make that one path blood.

Sloth3 Ulm. Which ulm? Any ulm.

Suggest a disciples2 game. Play lone wolf.

Hardmode: Disciples3.

Do an intentionally underpowered strat, like B9 flagellants.

Intentionally set yourself up as the big bad evil dark overlord everyone else needs to band together to defeat. And not as Ermor, because ermor has that built in, do it as like Marignon or something. Have stereotypical villain speeches be your only mode of communication, attack people's provinces, pillage then abandon, basically be 'evil' and 'stupid' and act like the GM in a ttrpg.

Play as caelum and don't build lance infantry.

MA Xibalba is pretty awful if you never use the bats and only use the muuch.

Don't take any indie provinces except via assassinating the indie commanders.

Play as EA Ermor and see how closely you can model your armies on republic-era roman legions - for extra points, never use any battle magic other than sermon of courage.

I disagree. You can easily get a nature chassis that can do N9 and great scales. N9 sould be used on your STR big giants for later SCing while you spam numedians out of your capital every turn.

Just my feeling, Unmarked are just so expensive
>>
>>122385519
Fomorian kings seriously don't need N9.

Also great scales you can actually afford while taking a bless aren't actually that great within context of a nation. Neither is N9 magically speaking.
>>
>>122385338
Unreast decreases the chance of getting any blood slaves, so patroling is necessary.
>>
>>122385634
You say not great but I consider getting N9 with Dom6, O3, P2, Cold1, G1, Luck3, and Magi 1 pretty decent, a lot of wiggle room to adjust for personal preferences.

Also yes formorian kings "Don't Need" N9 but it certainly helps not having to forge a ring of regen for them if you wanna do a little SC before you transition into super battle mages.
>>
>>122385940
Don't listen to him. Any giant just NEEDS N9, no exceptions. Soul Vortex or Ring of Regen re not the full substitute for the proper N9.
>>
>>122386381
>I say you can get N9 with decent scales
>say this helps with SCing Formorian kings
>DON'T LISTEN TO HIM! YOU NEED N9!

>>
>>122385338
not really, no. You're missing a turn of bloodhunting, have to find a way to transfer slaves, either by scouts or a lab, and adds a weird amount of micro to an already micro intensive mechanic. And in the meantime you still have a province with high unrest, cutting down on resources/income.

Find a province with some indy shaman, or other n1 mook, and make them spam pack of wolves. use horde from hell. Prophetize a Moundking and start cranking out skeletons. Put PD at 10. Get high dominion in the province. Every nation has some cheapass spammable chaff summon, just use that.
>>
>>122385338
white candles and order scales reduce unrest too, as PD/10 does.
summon wolves summon undead call of the winds, if you are despierate even horde from hell or summon fiery imps with decent casters make for good no-gold patrollers.
summon wolves is the best honestly.

let's see anyway: by hunting an moving you are mage-inefficient as you use 2 turns to bloodhunt once.
but a single lvl 2bloodhunter in a province with decent dominion and 20 PD should already be ALMOST unrest neutral, or certainly unrest neutral if you hunt twice and hold once.
at worst it's equivalent to keeping 4 blood hunter in a stack and moving it, but you should get more gold out of it.

if most of the provinces are forted you can even keep a rotating patrol force thanks to the move and patrol command.
>>
>>122385678
but i mean:

you have 5 provinces with 5500 population and only 3 blood hunters.

if you blood hunt each one of them and then move to the first one its very likely that it will be at 0 unrest.

so you get every other turn blood slaves always bloodhunting at 0 unrest.

also with no patrolling units
>>
>>122387149
okay, thanks

i didn't know 20PD in order was enough for a B2 bloodhunter.

>>
>>122387715
you should really really get wolves however. 20 PD is more a pop saving factor rather than patrol effective.

a lvl 2 blood hunter should get around 13 unrest every turn. if you get 7 candles, 3 order and 1 for PD reduction you should be almost neutral. eventually he will fail to hunt for a turn or you will have him doing nothing once every 3-4 turns and it will go back to 0.

You have no idea how many guides and shit tell people to take sloth 3. It makes me so very angry. It's one of the worst scales, because you have to have chaff around all the time, not just when you actually need them. And sometimes you just don't have chaff and die instead.

>laserguided boulders

EA Agartha is a bit of a powerhouse. Powerful E/F fire magic, and summons that kick ass in four different flavours make their scales /completely fucking irrelevant/. Given that you're removing one of the weaknesses of the nation (low prec wizards) while boosting two other parts I don't see this working poorly for you.

Unless you actually prioritized using the boulder launchers and used them as your main enemy-killing tactic.

MA Agartha with that bless would suck more.

If you truly wanted to make an EA Agartha that had to fight for life, Turmoil/Luck B8N8 Agartha.
>>
>>122388574
if you play a nation with obscenely low Resource costing units like Yomi and Miclitan why not give up some points for better magic/bless/scales in other areas?

on that note I do agree sloth 3 is a pain, I just settle for sloth 2 instead
>>
>>122388812

Some nations can very safely take sloth 1.

Yomi can take sloth 2. Unless you're actually using bandits, they're an exception to that rule. But like Mictlan sometimes wants forts near other forts and stuff, sloth 2 or 3 is a touch risky. That said, if you're blessing hard, it's a risk you might decide to run. It's still not a shoe-in like some people pretend.
>>
>>122389043

>>
>>122390954
the loss of "events" by O2 and O3 is minor, certain great events can only happen with L3 and O3, going for G2 and O2 because you might get lucky with thrones is foolish. After all what happens if you get the throne of Pestilence or Throne of Fall?

>How so? I've never really played any blood nations.
Slave value is much less than 2 per one gem at any mid-late point of the game. Consider for a second that a dedicated bloodhunting nation could be easily getting 200-300 slaves per turn, while gem economy is lucky to have 40 gems per turn with a gemgen up. Trading 2:1 under such conditions is ridiculous. 4-6 slaves per gem is not an unrealistic value.
Also depends on a gem type, since the value and uses clearly aren't equal (fire being cheaper than other gem types for example)

>W9 or F9 with E4
>or
Are you 2scrubs tienchi or something. I feel like i recognize that love for overblown blesses.
>>
>>122399275
Blood nations also spend slaves a lot faster than gem-based casters do, so that's not really a fair comparison.
>>
>>122399275
>dedicated bloodhunting nation could be easily getting 200-300 slaves per turn
Ah, I understand. Is that why blood-heavy nations are seen as being pretty powerful late-game, rather than because blood rituals are particularly good?

>Are you 2scrubs tienchi or something
Ya' got me. I really enjoy EA TC as a departure from ALL SCALES ALL THE TIME/awake Earth Snake.
>>
>>122397192
you couldn't know it, don't worry.
I said I wanted to trade shit but I was too lazy to tell you how many. So I just sent you the gems, since I'm not in a hurry at the moment and I can wait until the next turn.

>>122395290
I'm curious about the other graphs, can you post more?
I think i'm kind of behind in research, but I can't really know it.
>>
>>122399482
I don't see your point. Sure blood economy can burn through hundreds of gems per turn and things they are getting from those slaves aren't much worse (and sometimes are incredibly cost efficient or better), than what gem nations get.
But blood slaves lack scarcity.
If you trade away death gems at 2:1 for example, you are out of mound fiend or specter or some other shit. Blood nation can still summon 4 more vampires with his leftovers slaves for that turn.
It's a suicidal kind of trade unless you are really desperate for slaves or make it favourable for yourself. Trading with blood nations need to be heavily weighted.

Now, this is tienchi and he probably isn't going to have such a ridiculous blood economy so it would be stupid for him to trade at 6:1, but maybe he got a bunch of good sites or something

>>122399721
>Ah, I understand. Is that why blood-heavy nations are seen as being pretty powerful late-game, rather than because blood rituals are particularly good?
Yes. Your average demon (with a few obviously strong exceptions like ozelotls) isn't very impressive compared to tien chi national summons for example, but you sure as hell can get a lot more of them. And blood economy just keeps growing as you conquer.

You are number 5 nation on research. Your shit is cheap and you've got good money so it's not surprising.

so question concerning a matter of game engine since the game in question is long over (it was a blitz)

It was the first year and was site searching a province I was starting to build my first fort on (palisades). Now the site searcher found a site that gave a free Fortress but when I went to check the guy building the palisades he was still able to do so. I tested a month and construction continued as normal.

Now I just ignored it and accepted the 600 gold loss for a free 800 gold fort with two upgrades but my question is: if I had finished that palisades would anything had happened to that site fort?

O3L3 is fucking great. Free cities, less bad events, reliable gold AND surprise gold, good times all around.

The false synergy that people cling to is a huge trap for noobs. Random events are capped at 4/turn, and most games run with common events. You'll be having max if you have any chance of victory, by mid-game.

>EA R'lyeh will never be good
>there will never be a primal aboleth pretender
>>
>>122438668
Literally all they need to do is just give all the aboleths - units, mages, even the shitty chaff - a 'land form' so that they can function amphibiously. Make them wallow around with 3 AP or whatever, but as long as they can actually be used to fight on land the nation will be playable. It'll be like some weird hybrid of MA and LA R'lyeh where they have some control over the freespawn, but can only produce it under water.
>>
>>122439091
But then they wouldn't be aboleths.
>>
>>122439297
D&D Aboleths from 3.5 onwards I can't find anything about them having land speed in 2e online are amphibious and move about 1/6th slower on land than they do underwater.
10 ft. (2 squares), swim 60 ft.
I think the fluff for them being able to move is that they are like mudfish and use their tentacles/fins to drag themselves along.
>>
>>122440268

Not to mention they're powerful wizards and generally have legions of mind controlled slaves, instead of like maybe one guy.

If you encounter an aboleth out of the water, it's likely going to be /flying/, not wallowing around.

But they can breathe air, yes.
>>
>>122440629
Aboleths with levitate makes some sense. But they don't have lungs, so how can they breath air?

Maybe if they had a new ability to consume gems instead of breathing, that would be cool.
>>
>>122440818

DnD aboleths are lungfish. They breathe air and water.

Additionally, it's trivial in dnd to breathe air instead of water. At least, for a monster of an aboleth's CR which is also a mind-controller with legions of slaves.

The actual answer to 'the underwater problem' is make all underwater units amphibians bar a select few that are more powerful, then make various items cheaply available to any nation with those (aka WATER MAGIC) to give 'gift of air breathing' to commanders to take them onto land.

Const0 commander only, const2 take 25 guys, const 6 take 100 guys.

Exactly the same as land nations going into the water, but a bit easier, as water nations NEED to get onto land to have any chance of winning the game.

>>
>>122442153

R'lyeh pretty much already does this in MA. I mean, it has other problems, but its only aquatics are the crab creatures bred for underwater combat, which kinda makes sense.

Then LA comes along and gets the advantage of freespawn aquatic units that cost upkeep, because fuck you hohoho.

>events are capped at 4
No, they are not. The hard cap on random events was removed in the transition from dom3 to dom4. Your events don't scale linearly with your provinces, but they definitely don't cap at 4, as anyone with a large game can tell you.
>The reduction in event matters less for late game
Events and scales are more important early on.

O3 decreases event frequency significantly. That's a disynergy with luck, and offsets the downside of misfortune.

Moreover, there are 15 events unlocked by Order 3 as of patch 4.16. (there is not an updated event list.) Of those, 9 are negative (revolts) and none provide "free cities."

There are approximately 30 events that result in free forts of various sorts. Of those, the majority are triggered by the Throne of War. 15 require positive luck scales, 2 require productivity, and only one notes order scales as a requirement - and that only requires Order 1. All but a handful require specific poptypes.

In short, you'll actually get more fort events by taking T3P2L3 than O3L3, both by unlocking more events, and by having more events. And it'll save you 160 design points that might be more helpful towards other, more productive uses.

Fuck off with your "meme" of how great O3L3 is, and stop shitting on people who know what they're talking about until you learn how to play the game.

Lanka's sacred blood summons are better, and sacred blood summons are great, but XIbalba has stealthy MM3 fliers that you recruit in any forest, and there's something to be said for having a big early game advantage as well as a bit late game advantage, especially since they can be overlapped a bit to stay solid in the mid-game.
>>
>>122448304
They can raid 1 PD, but you need more than 40 to beat, like, 6 elf or giant PD thanks to their chaff-tier morale. Xibalba needs to choose its targets well for early aggression to work in their favor.
>>
>>122448454
Yeah but they fly and have lances. Once you get a bunch of them, they can kill almost any province in the first charge and take no losses. And they're cheap as fuck, you can easily pump out a squad of 40 each turn in several provinces pretty quickly.
>>
>>122448697

>>
>>122448697
Right, that lets them beat indies fine and they choose their targets thanks to their mobility. But as mentioned here >>122448454 some races have PD that will rout them with minimal investment, and most expansion parties will be able to do that too.
>>
>>122425372

bats are good for raiding but an huge shit for everything else.

in 2scrubs1tub i wanted to overrun Yomi who had a bad expansion.
i playtested and 180 bats could not take his capital's PD. any of his demon army would have shredded me even in neutral order.
>>
>>122450136
Statwise maybe, but lancers get a nice bonus on the first strike and don't get fucked by repel checks because of their low morale.
>>
>>122453817
Xibalba really needs to get thei blood economy up and running in order to win wars after the early game because their troops can't do shit. Luckily for them they're one of the best blood nations in the game. A lategame Xibalba is damn scary.
>>
Start is still sub-par, but at least I've got a silver throne for my troubles.
>>
>>122454827
That's true, but they also don't do too hot in the early game either, barring the opponent either not being willing to invest in enough PD to beat bat raiders or being one of the few nations whose armies are bad enough early game to die to the lance swarm. Like, it's not impossible to get an advantage in the early game due to either size or surprise, but they really need demons or mage support to beat even the regular units of other nations.
>>
>>122455023
Early on your main advantage is mobility and the ability to simply outproduce the opponent. You're probably fucked against nations with strong basic troops like giants and elves, or anything above indie tier really in a direct confrontation, but you can wear down many potential opponents by attrition alone, being able to starve them of income (early game means they won't have many forts up yet) and to replace losses without any real effort.
>>
>>122455242
Yep, but like I mentioned it's dependent on matchup, player skill, and even luck for where you and your opponent move your armies. I'd say it fits under the umbrella of 'it depends.'
