Okay, so. Warbros Server.

Current server status: Down. Keep this in mind before you get all confused.

To join up with us when planets, so we can cry together, there's some prep work to be done. First of all, you need to get into the group. To do so, message Ced23Ric on Steam. This guy: http://steamcommunity.com/id/ced23ric

Also, to save yourself some loadtime, preload our mods.
You can subscribe the to collection here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=375603526
There is a preload world (offline, creative) which you should start once to prod all mods to download: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=529237944
You can also use that for offline building, blueprinting and then building on the serbian later. I don't care if you want this server to be vanila, it won't be. It's a shitload of mods, but they have been weighted and tested and they work. Half of them are tweaks and visual shit (no beacon glare, for example) anyway.

You will be invited to a group called "Warbros Space Engineers". That group works as a whitelist. Only people in that group will be able to join the server. That is so I can control better who has access and we don't get unwashed pubbies.

Quick rule overview:
- Don't be a dick.
- No megalomanic superbuilds, use offine creative for that.
- No grid spam, every ship/thing you build is a calculated physics object that eats performance. So, no drone swarms, eh?
- PvP is opt-in between two (or more) consenting parties. No ifs, no butts.
- Only one drill per player. Take the Large Ship Earthbreaker, it's a good drill. Why? Drilling kills the game for everyone. Simu speed drops like a white city girl taking a moonshine shot down South.
- Talk to me if you have issues. Don't just shitpost on /egg/, talk to me. I'll see what I can do.

It doesn't seem to hurt them with small Inertia Dampening occasionally, but I haven't tried to use them full blast with the covers on. Idea is to only use the covers if some dick NPC drone tries to fuck me up. Typically if I'm leaving it docked inside an asteroid I just leave all but the emergency thrusters off since I don't have deployable solar panels up yet and don't like wasting fuel.

Some general stuff:
- You are encouraged to make your own faction. Warbros will have one, auto-accepting peace treaties. You can apply to join us, but if you're not into building shit together and sperging out on TS3, this might not be for you. Buddy up with someone, make things happen.
- Warbros faction will not hold your hand. We'll hep if you are conveniently close and can spare the time/resources, though.
- The server will have some QoL addons, such as the helmet mod. Read the description and understand it. Protip: Turn of the glass reflection, set the shadow scale so there is no shadow and deactivate delayed movement.
- Another is Chat History. Type /ch to see the last 50 messages typed in /global. Might help with catching up.
- Also, Build Info, which gives you information about blocks you're placng. Turn it on/off with /buildinfo in /global chat.
- There's only one respawn ship, the Sparky. It has all you need to survive, some mats, beacon, solars, nuke reactor, refinery/assembler. Spawn in one of those and set out to meet the cold void. Keep in mind that Sparkies cannot land on planets because lol thrust.
- There will not be a Starter Zone for new players, unless you make and maintain one. We won't.
- Every time I log off, I will make a copy of the server save. The server is set to autosave every 30 minutes. Recovery of items might be tricky. Make blueprints of your shit - Ctrl+B.

You might want to grab the Warbros UI, too. See through menus and generally improved visibility and an increased G Menu size.

How do you actually build big ships /egg/?
Do you just build the outer hull and then fill in with stuff? Or build subsystems first and then build the hull around it?

Right now I'm trying to simplify the building process by making giant modules so I can quickly piece together something resembling a ship that hopefully should still perform well.

"Open PvP" is just an excuse for offline raiding faggotry. We talked about PvP in Spengies at length - it's all about hiding and never fining someone or offline raiding them after you found them. That's not fun, that's griefing, period. Inb4 "place turrents", that's idiotic. Just as "just hide better", because what's the point of multiplayer if you are hermitting it up? If you want to PvP, make a faction and find someone who wants to battle you, then declare war on them. No issues with that, because it's between you and them.

I don't want to log in to find my base ground down because you thought it was hilarious to blast my shit while I was asleep.

The rest of the "rules" is to preserve server performance. If you cannot see why these are in place, you are being obtuse. No one enjoys a 0.3 simu speed mud slug fest. It's not because I hate fun or your 300x300x900 1:1 scale Brylgarian Battlebarge, it's because the game cannot handle it and everyone suffers for it. Everyone. Not just you. It's sadly my call as an admin to make sure the server runs relatively smoothly, so I gotta set some boundaries. I wish you could build the Strygian Planeteater and mine with 81 Monsterdrills, but it is simply not in the cards. Not my fault, not my wish, game's limitations.

You are free to go to whereever you want. You will quickly find out that servers without such limitations are stutterfests, plagued by people fucking with one anoher on the daily and PvP offline raidfags kill the communities because of their toxic behaviour. Server up today, but first we need to solve the issue where you spawn in the grav field of the earthlike planet with a ship that doesn't have enough power to fly and crashes into the ground while you are still loading in. And then you spawn in a space suit with enough hydrogen for 1 sec of thrust, which is all you have to break your freefall.

Setting up some spawn points now, gonna look into moving the planets. This is a bit of a nightmare.

I think I went too far in the size department...
It was supposed to be a laser frigate with 4 main weapon mounts, one is Ion mod for 50% shield rape, other one is a cannon for 50% more DAKKA-PEW, other two are, obviously, lasers.
Also gonna put 8 rocket modules, either checkerboard pattern for FPS-killer volley or just 8 stronk rockets with laser guidance from smaller one-module mount.

My shitty toaster doesn't even support dx11. Checking stats collected by steam, it looks like I'm not alone. Around 1 in 5 steam users don't have dx11, yet these chucklefucks decided that their big hypetrain feature won't even be accessible to a notable portion of their userbase.

The entire ion thruster ecosphere needs a rehaul, the fact that you can casually fly to space with your jetpack is just laughable. The jetpack should not be able to overcome more than say 0.1g and even then be not that manueverable. It's for emergencies after all.

Engineer jetpack uses hydrogen now. That's why you have a hydrogen reading on your HUD. It's more acceleration tha 9.8 so you can still fly and build but you'll run out of fuel if you don't fill your inventory with hydrogen bottles.

My AA is being an absolute pair of cunts. Even though I've got a failsafe on them they're still friendly firing turrets.
I tried limiting their elevation so that they'd only shoot stuff above a 20 degree angle.
Only they're not. Sometimes they shoot ships, sometimes they shoot off a few rounds at an aircraft.

Does anyone have any experience with limited field of fire? I know I'm just doing something wrong.

Earth's escape velocity is about 11 KILOMETERS per second.

I don't think it's really reasonable to expect that in SE. The game's about building things with cubes, not about getting gravity assists from Jupiter. Realistic gravity mechanics would make everything to do with planets unreasonably hard.

I dont know what I expect but I would like to get some discussion going about planets and the overall gameplay flow of space engineers.

Up until minutes before I started installing the patch I was pretty hyped about planets but something hit me. There isnt really a point to planets larger than moons as they contain more resources than a player or 10 or 20 could possibly use efficiently or for any purpose because the rest of spengies isnt built for planets.

This is a problem that space engineers had before in the form of the availability of resources versus the material costs of blocks. In open space you had to travel and move to keep getting resources which were in big ol clumps of varying amounts. This gives incentive to building ships and so on.

The trouble with planets also have is one also linked to the current design of the game. Which is "why on earth would you spread out your infrastructure/bases".

Bases that are far away still take up processing and positioning isnt that important relative to planets. Or other planets.

So what can be done, I'd like to hear thoughts on this.

Yeaaah, I'm not really seeing it. It's not that orbital mechanics aren't cool, it's that SE isn't made for them. At all. It would need to let you fast forward the obscenely long travel times. It would need an interface for accurately pinpointing the relative positions and velocities of distant objects you might want to visit, as well as every stellar body whose gravity affects you, and some kind of math framework for figuring out orbits to reach them without trial and error. Right now, even pointing your spacecraft in a specific direction with an arcsecond-range margin of error is a huge issue. Orbits are right out.

Like, build a little hoop in space somewhere. Now, try to fly a ship through that hoop from a hundred kilometers away, with limited fuel. Next, try it from a thousand kilometers away. Next, try it again, except the hoop is moving. It's possible to do, sure, but it's obnoxiously difficult because the user interface doesn't help you at all. And with actual orbits, neither you nor the target would even be moving in a straight line. This kind of difficulty isn't fun for most people.

This game is coming to xbone. Current gen consoles have 8gb ram.
Only 5 is for games, the rest 3 is for OS and social media bullshit. F I V E FUCKING GIGABYTES.
This game struggles to run on pcs, that are much more powerful than xbone. With unlimited worlds, and now with planets game eats as much ram as you have. I saw at dev forum screenshot where game used more than 32gb of ram(probably some huge ass world)
How's keen going to port the game with their shitty coding skills? They can't release game on xbone in current state.
With their coding skills i can see only one way = Fallout4-like level of launch(30fps cap, drops to ZERO fps, horrible lods, bugs, etc.). Bethesda can get away with that because they paid everyone to shill and they have a lot of drones who will defend everything.

Small studio like Keen can't get away with that on consoles.
If Keen want to pass quality control, they need to rewrite the engine. And it's not going to happen, Marek said a lot of times, that it would require a lot of resources and time and they don't want to do that, they are satisfied with the current engine.

There are plenty of tools out there that tell you where memory leaks are probably coming from. I don't know how effective they are on a project as large and fucked as SE, but they're definitely available and easy to use.

For those of you who aren't programmers, a memory leak is what eats up RAM for no apparent reason as a program runs for long periods of time. It is a product of sloppy programming and will get any computer science student an F on a project. SE has memory leaks everywhere, which is why it is completely unplayable for more than a few hours at a time.

I have no idea what the fuck is killing the performance. Planets are voxels, which no way in hell cause any sort of performance hit on their own, they'd need to be thousands of times bigger for that. On top of them goes a marching cubes algorithm which should not cause too much perf loss either. They must have something seriously fucked up in that engine.

That's exactly it, or something along those lines, I think. Somewhere in there something triggers massive updating that is way more than needed, this is the only real thing I can think of that could cause these perf issues. I noticed that crashing a ship into a planet, even a small fighter, leads to a big momentary drop in fps, when all it did was affect 10-20 voxels, and it seems to be worse the bigger the planet. It's necessary unfortunately. Keep in mind the requirements were made two years ago when the game was much weaker all around. Keen really needs to update them though so that future buyers don't get the game when they can't run it well.

Optimization would also help a ton, but things like DX9 are so old and archaic now that they've got to go regardless.

Really though, you should all just slot a bare minimum of 16GB. RAM has been dirt cheap for nearly a decade now. Sure, most of the time it's useless, but it barely costs anything and you'll be glad you have it for those select few times that it's necessary.

Same thing happened to me. Vidyas kind of peaked in graffix and I hadnt upgraded in years because I could just drop a setting or two down a few notches and run everything fine at 60fps. Have an old ass i7920 2.67ghz, 12 gigs DDR3 ram, GTX285.

But then DX11 rolled around and is becoming the norm in games and I had to upgrade my video card because 285s were literally the cutoff where DX11 isnt supported.

Now Ive got a GTX970 and everything runs great. Probably wont have to upgrade for another 5 years unless theres some kind of massive jump in performance with new game and system requirements.

I don't want it to be piss easy, but if you have completely dominated a ship, killed everyone on board and disabled all the defenses, why should you have to gut the thing and manually unweld/weld every single component on the ship to control it? There should be an easier way, like maybe hack all cockpits/reactors/programming blocks or something.

I always just end up scrapping anything I capture or find, which is a shame since many of these ships are great looking.

Say I have a cargo container with Sorters on each end, one with Drain All set to draw ore into the container, and the other set to let that ore out but not let other things in. If the input from the Drain sorter and the output for the other sorter are on the same system, will it just waste power cycling shit through over and over?

Transferring into atmo is the easy part, all you need is enough atmo thrusters to stop you before you splat. Escaping atmo requires a sustained burn that hydrogen thrusters can't manage without a fuckton of fuel tanks hogging your interior space. Ion thrusters are simply more convenient.
