Lost EU Maps
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/575/?
>Allows playing the 4 EU maps which are not avaliable in EWI:
>URB_Museum, URB_Museum_Euro, URB_Demolition, URB_GasStation

Long War- Customize the Air Game
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/608/?
>you can customize the stats for the Interceptor, the Firestorm, every single weapon, UFO, and foundry project related to the Air Game.
>You can also modify critical hits, specifically the minimum crit chance, the maximum crit chance, and the critical hit multiplier.

Relevant Information
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/623/?
>Long War is often criticized for being opaque and having a significant proportion of important information regarding game mechanics and detailed stats located outside of the game itself (i.e. DGC.ini, the wiki, and the Nexus forums).
>However, the strategic UI is filled with flavour text that, while nice to read, is extremely vague and virtually useless to the player.
>This mod aims to repurpose the space in order to add information that is precise, assists player decisions, and reduces the need to ALT-TAB out of the game to check things.

Long War Mod Manager
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/620/?
>This utility simplifies the installation and removal of Long War mods and can be used as a replacement for PatcherGUI. It also supports some new mod file extensions that allow for the automatic updating of configuration files.
>This can be used to automatically define keyboard commands, add second wave options, or anything else that involves adding lines to a config file.
>>

Long War Customize Unique Soldier Stats
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/606/?
>You can alter the HP, Will, Aim, and Mobility of all the unique soldiers, and if they get a bonus perk (Van Doorn/Zhang), well, you can edit that too.
>This mod is compatible with eclipse666's Patrick - The Plumber - Carlock (for Long War) modification.

Additional Species
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/619/?
>Show all UFO species in Hyperwave Relay info screen.

Virtual Reality Training (for Long War)
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/569/?
>Healthy and non-fatigued soldiers earn XP every day while at the base. Extra XP can be earned by building the Officer Training School and purchasing officer upgrades. Make those rookies useful at last!

Campaign Summary
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/626/?
>Campaign Summary adds a new menu option to the Situation Room allowing you to view a timeline of major strategic events over your entire campaign.
>It provides high level information about the events and displays an up-to-date world map showing the status of the world including panic levels, satellite coverage, withdrawn countries, and mission info.

Unhealable Red Fog
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/629/?
>With this mod SW Red Fog penalties such as aim and mobility will last until the end of the mission and cannot be healed by medkits, sodlier will penalties remain healable.

All Perks Per Rank
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/631/?
>Gives you all perks in a rank when you choose a perk. You will gain the bonus stats (will, aim, etc) of the chosen perk, but not the other perks. Works with 1, 2, or 3 perks per rank, and in every version of Long War I've tested it on.

Floater Autopsy Tweak
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/632/?
>Changes the placement of the Floater Autopsy so it comes after Xenogenetics instead of after Alien Biocybernetics, while simultaneously making it a pre-req for Alien Biocybernetics

Its for a punch-focused MEC. I need/expect to be in the enemies face a lot, R&G is for getting there and CCS is for taking on berserkers/lids that get close plus the flanked meatbags that try to reposition, but i may switch it out for the extra survivability DC gives me.
>>
>>122068775

Arc Thrower Range
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/630/?
>Allows you to adjust Arc Thrower range through ini files.
>After installation, go the "Weapons=..." line for the Arc Thrower in DefaultGameCore.ini (by default, it's like 1947, or 1974 if you use the pistol-slot version). Change the iRange variable to something you like.

DR Chipping (for Long War)
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/628/?
>DR Chipping is a minor mechanics tweak that allows DR to be reduced through repeated hits. It is fully compatible with Long War and integrates seamlessly into existing campaigns. It does not overhaul balance, perk, or item stats in any way, it simply adds a new mechanic to the tactical game.

UFO Interception Tweak
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/634/?
>This is an attempt to lessen the impact of "bad luck" RNG during UFO interceptions by doubling the interception time and halving all damage. This prevents your interceptors from getting destroyed by one or two unlucky shots and also makes aborting at low HP a little less risky.
>The dodge, aim and tracking modules have their effects doubled as well. The chance to destroy a UFO has also been adjusted to take into account the halving of damage.

Enhanced Soldier Customization (for Long War)
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/607/?
>This mod allows you to change your soldier's head size, body size and voice pitch from the soldier customisation screen. The range of available skin colours has also been greatly increased - you're no longer limited to skin tones.
>SHIV body size, weapon size and colour can be customised too!
>>
You think you're above snek, /xcg/?

Bugfixes for bonus will and psi
http://www.nexusmods.com/xcom/mods/642/?
>Instances where psi panic would show 100% but still fail.
>Killing an alien who has mind controlled a soldier will not give that soldier the fallen comrade debuff and should fix the bug with 0 will hopefully.
>If an alien dies while being mind controlled, it will not apply the fallen comrade debuff the the rest of the squad and it will not count as a dead squad member for the xp bonus or prevent 'So others may live' from applying.
>Lots of instances where the bonus will from Neural damping, Combat drugs, Legio Patria Nostra, Esprit de corps and penalties from fallen comrade and battle fatigue didn't apply.
>Psi panic had a fixed duration of 2 turn irregardless of how many turns of panic it rolled. Fixed so duration is the same as nr of panic turns.
>If you target a unit that has neural dampning with psi panic it will show 0% chance to hit.
>Fixed so aliens get the same -35 penalty when using mind control as xcom.

Anyone else getting triggered by forward swept wings?

Planes like the X-29 and the Su-47 that had forward swept wings were experiments in order to test materials and were never meant for production.

The Raven has such a limited production and it's so experimental that I won't be surprised that they just can't be bothered to develop a more streamlined, production friendly design.

The Raven is against an alien threat so its also understandable that they don't cut corners.

Forward swept wings are aerodynamically superior. They lower drag (and thus go faster), increase agility, provide better lift to weight ratio (especially when going at transonic), and generally have better stall characteristic.
On the downside, they are much more unstable (in the same way that the SU-27 and its derivatives are) and require complex, computerized control systems, and need expensive composites in order to take the higher stresses on the wings. Both of these costs would be seen as acceptable when creating an elite, anti-alien fighter.
tl;dr: forward swept wings are better but harder/more expensive.

>>122067885
PUSH, PUSH, AGGRESSION, AGGRESSION

Normally I never recommend +crit chance abilities, it's just that the Shock-Absorbent Armor one perk is so limited. 4 tiles only? rly? I guess it helps if your mecs get flanked all the time, but is there more to it I'm not seeing here?

Seconding VPT, it's really awesome.

What about this? I cant decide between heat-aggression-rapidfire for robut killing or shredder-collateral for that pseudo bullet wizard combo. Going bullet apprentice would also open up absorption fields but i'm on the fence about that one.
>>
>>122073201
Forget bullet wizard and shit

>>
>>122073201
Shredder over HEAT unless I've got a Shredder unit of that purpose. It's universally useful and enables up to 7 units to do +33% damage which is usually more than the HEAT unit could do itself, except...

if it has rapid fire and can kill the thing in one turn. But again, those units are less versatile and more a one-trick pony.

>>122073702
what? you prefer sharpshooter?
>shooting cunts in full cover instead of blowing it up
>>
>>122073939
There are some basic flaws in going shredlateral valkyrie.
>You're missing out on damage. A LOT.
>It doesn't work with LeU.
>Collateral damage has a tiny ass AoE
>Valkyries are meant to do single or up to two target damage.
>MEC weapons have so little ammo that you'd be stuck reloading without shooting much

If you really want a MEC wizard, use a Shogun. Those are a lot better at this.

Solid advice, m8. Will do.
>>
>>122074636
Valkyries are best when built for maximum crit. They are the best MEC out there, maybe marauders get close.
That means aggression, sharpshooter, plat stab.
You can literally 1-shot everything but the big shit. But then you realize, that you have 2 more, almost guaranteed crits, that also get shred damage, which means a potential damage output of ~60 per turn. Which is enough to destroy almost anything(barring temple ship bosses)
>>
How do you set your interceptors?

I've read somewhere that one should use aggressive for rookie pilots and balanced for everything else.
Defensive only if you abuse that no refueling bug.

Is that true? Does the optimal setting change depending on research and loadout?
>>
>>122075034
>fuck critfantry
>we critfantank now
>>
>>122075150
Check the weapon accuracy on your interceptors.
After lasers, your aim gets capped, so aggressive stance becomes retarded.
UFO's don't get the aim cap that fast either.
Tldr;
Low rank, pre-laser: agg
Mid rank, pre-laser: bal
Low rank, post-laser: bal
Mid/High rank, post-laser: def

So what is xcom in EU exactly? Are they in charge of handling threats conventional militaries can't, or are they the only real anti Ayy force?
>>
>>122105951
An underground international paramilitary force organized by the powers that truly control the world to effectively serve as a spearhead in their anti-xeno efforts.
>>

Handling what conventional forces can't, research and development, rapid reaction force.

It is shown that conventional militaries are fighting ayys through cutscenes and council requests.

I still cant belive that the ayys before deploying their endgame could ever give humanity a hard time. I mean, shit maybe at the begining they can do some harass shit, but when the military gets serious, or martial law gets declared, there is no way anything could land within "invasion-distance" of populated areas before geting vaporized. If it do lands, its just more yummy resources to us.

Add XCOM and several nations "private xcoms" on top of that, and nothing short of a full-on invasion with MCing most of the world/military leaders would even make a dent.

In short notice, we would slip into starship troopres mode.
>>
>>122109749
It is a lot more simple than that. Ayys control the orbitals, and that means everything in warfare when someone has the ability to do so. There are numerous treaties preventing any country from putting anything military like up there. Hell, the opening cinematic shows them dropping the pods that cocoon people from orbit before they actually attack.
>>
>>122075034
Why would you take Plat Stab when it only affects the first shot? Take Reactive sensors and opportunist for a third or even fourth shot. I'd suggest LnL too and putting Shredder on a buddy (ex. a Gunner/Shogun) to handle the extra shots, but you don't have to, I suppose. HEAT is pretty good, and you should have time to reload.

This reminds me of a book I read a while ago. It is called Alien Invasion: How to Defend Earth. It is a book written by two authors who have worked on space programs. It is basically about how we would be totally fucked if an alien force decided to invade us. It talked about things like no militarization of space and we have a huge amount of atmosphere we can't fly anything in because it is too high for our current craft. They ended the book by advocating for the creation of something akin to x-com actually.

There's two general builds that work really well for snipers. One is with in the zone, snapshot, and Lock and Load for finishing off a lot of low health aliens. That combination lets you reload and keep shooting in the same turn. The other is with precision shot doing massive damage with crits. I prefer mayhem over double tap for these.
>>
>>122110456
I build mine for max crit and damage against single targets.

Lone Wolf > Precision Shot > Sharpshooter > VPT > Bring em on > Mayhem

This build can one-shot just about anything given that you have the proper equipment. The first disk I encountered died to a 17 damage crit from a ballistic sniper rifle. Now(late game), my sniper can completely shit on regular units without needing prec shot(base damage is immense and crit chance still ludicrous), and with prec shot, can wipe out level 9 leaders.
>>
>>122110073
Exactly, they control it because we willfully abandoned that area.
When shit hits the fan, we would put aside the petty treaties and use their asses for target practice for the until recently "illegal" sathunter missiles and the likes.

Worst case, just create a junk cloud "shield" around the planet, and let an explosive-aided kestler syndrome do the work for us.

>>122110981
For me, the best part about alien invasion stories, is when humanity doesnt get wiped day 1, and has time to deploy crazy ass last-ditch, untested techs and weapons. Imagine end-war Nazi mentality.
In the end, im quite sure we would (willingly or not), just literaly light our entire atmosphere on fire. Tsar bomba anyone?
>>
>>122112040
That book talks about several layers of defeat and resistance, all the way to a sixth column situation. You also overestimate the power of nuclear weapons. Nuclear winter is something that most likely wouldn't happen unless we carpet bombed major forests with nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons are best used to crack open hardened, stationary targets. If you want something that would render places inhospitable for long stretches of time, you should look at stuff like cobalt bombs.

Wouldn't be surprised if there was research or a perk involved with fall damage, heck if it was some sort of take down that the ranger could do on an enemy below... I would guess it would be based on how many stories you fall, what armor you are wearing (with titan armor or its equivalent doing the most), and perhaps a little RNG.

Or on the reverse side... what if a cryssalid/beserker could leap from a rooftop and ripandtear/goomba stomp one of your troopers in turn?

On the topic of DT vs Mayhem:
The thing is Double Tap will give you more Damage/Turn than mayhem, but it's like getting 7 points and then 2 points every other turn vs getting 4 every turn, it's 9 vs 8(for a period of 2 turns) in efficiency but you generally dont do much without the 2nd shot.
If you want your sniper to be a panic button, double tap is great. If you want him to pick off a threat each turn, mayhem is better.

It depends on the brotherhood chapter, the original brotherhood was founded to collect pre war technology in an effort to keep it out of the hands that caused the Great War. Eventually, their political power dwindled with the rise of the NCR and other major powers in the west. The brotherhood in washington DC chose a more humanitarian cause, and I'm not sure if the brotherhood in the commonwealth is from the former chapters or the latter.

Dynamic War changes the frequency of the missions and scales the resources and experience gained in order to make the game take fewer missions to beat. It's not supposed to change the difficulty at all, but in practice I think it makes the game a bit harder. Things like losing soldiers, losing missions, and getting bad RNG in the air game seem to have a comparatively greater negative effect than they do at the regular pace.

I just realize how much we get for free in XCOM, just look at all the upper levels of the base.

We didn't have to pay to dig them out or to build all that infrastructure, even the maintenance is free.

I am thankful for what was given to me.
>>
>>122168801
I don't because my autism prevent me from building the OCS anywhere but under the barracks. I like the idea they just take a quick elevator trip to school instead of crossing the whole base.

My most current campaign is, oddly enough, on the phone version of the game were I'm currently hunting down the last few Achievements (Continental Fellow, etc) as some serious time/travel constraints has keep me away from my main PC.

It's a buggy ride but, for something I can do on the go at all times, still a fun one.

So I'm doing my master in Computer science, and have a lot of robotics and real-time courses this semester, and while it's all fairly tough stuff, I keep wondering if it'd really be that hard to build a quadrupedal, or even bipedal, robot that just holds it's balance. Once you know your pose and limb position, and assuming gravity doesn't change, adjusting should be rather simple, right?
Does anyone have experience in the pratical field of robotics and would like to share some key issues that appear?
>>
Ayy lmao
>>
>>122176656
Yes, it is hard since it has to adjust for imbalances caused by the surface of the floor being imperfect, which will tip the creature over ever so slightly. That includes movement of the ground on unstable lands and when in high structures which do sway a little in the wind. Making it walk in a sterile lab environment is easy, making it walk in real world conditions and actively balance itself all the time is not. The prevalence of multiped bots is because those have such large bases that they can't tip over on their own; this comes at the cost of mobility, agility and energy efficiency but what choice do they have?

You think DARPA and everyone else is slow to develop walkers just for the shits and giggles when they fall over?

If you've ever spoken to an animator, you'd know just how hard walk cycles are to understand, let alone develop.

That said, what I wonder about is why they don't try to go more for systems that balance themselves mechanically instead of with a computer. Feet with adjustable shocks in them like sports cars have. Instead of trying to adjust limb position to balance itself on uneven ground, just let one side's suspension go softer if it's raised up.

for EU, kill or be killed. you cannot leave anything alive.

if there is ever anything left alive during the enemy turn that can shoot at you, just reload right then and there

dont bother breaking LOS, just bring lasers and kill everything you activate on the turn it activates or it will kill you immediately

you don't have to put your guys in cover if there aren't any aliens active

get really drunk for your first few missions in EU because they are boring as shit and you have pretty much no options for anything. even when it goes well, it's just boring because there's no variation or decision-making.

the game makes a big deal about flanking but don't bother trying it, you'll just activate a million dudes on the way. just keep savescumming different combinations of moves until you get your rookies to actually hit anything.

Stop bothering with Xenonauts is probably the best option. Second bests are using suppression, learning what role weapons are supposed to fill (shotguns for close combat rushing, pistols for scouting and shield charging, machineguns for suppression, sniper rifles for taking dudes out if you have high accuracy and assault rifles for an unhappy middle road), try to get the clearest line of fire possible, use grenades and explosive stuff to take out cover and random stuff that rapes your accuracy and either accept that taking an UFO with camping aliens will take some of your idiots or spam explosives, put firesquads in front of the door and hope for the best. Keep researching stuff and weapons, you need that to keep up the damage.

>>122222889
Ok, guess I was mistaken about wounds lowering xp. Good to know that on crashed scouts you don't have to worry about giving rookies kills.

But you are wrong about mission without deaths giving 20 xp, becuase you can take rookies on abduction missions, and if they don't get a kill they won't rank up.

Rank up for rookies is 120, and you can end a mission at 110.

It would be more sensible from a player's point of view to do it the other way around since they'd probably be used to ballistics looking as they do in Vanilla, and likely thought of EXALT's weapons as being kinda futuristic in comparison to XCom's kinda clunky-looking basic weapons.

>It kind of makes more sense for coil guns to be as bulky and boxy as vanilla ballistics.
Not really, when you consider how much lower profile it could be since it's just a coil and you don't have a giant bolt to move back and forth. It also doesn't make sense since XCom's ballistics eject shells as part of their animaions, don't they? Coilguns wouldn't use shells.

ehhhh imo the basic xcom AR is basically a SCAR-H and everything else is just a cartoon version of its respective weapon type but done up in disgusting modern desert tan plastic because it was 2012 and that shit got undeservedly popular

EXALT guns only look more realistic because they're proportioned slightly better (but are still fuckhuge) and are based on the more identifiable G36 and FN Minimi with a weird barrel shroud rather than being Generic Bolt Action and Generic Shotgun and Generic Pistol That Is Still In A Holster. The XCom LMG is basically a "SCAR-ified" M60.

If you want the true authentic experience, you should use the original version with dosbox + xcomutil bug fixes. OpenXcom is less buggy, doesn't need dosbox and has mods, both as built-in options and fanmade stuff, but it's not a 100% accurate emulation especially with the AI.

I played some oldcom, straight from floppy discs, but I was young then so I don't really notice any glaring differences.

If you go to their site they will tell you straight up that the only true difference is that the AI is different because they couldn't perfectly replicate it since the rewrote the code from the ground up.

As far as I'm concerned though, openxcom is no different then downloading the latest patch that finally fixes all the bugs and glitches in the game. Hell, just fixing the glitches might change how the AI acts.

Nothing casual or unauthentic about it.
>>

There's atleast one detail they missed with OXC, killing zombies with incendiary damage is supposed to autokill the chryssalid too.
>>
>>122246926
Yeah, kinda up for debate though. I'm not sure if that was "supposed" to happen, though it did.

Not saying they couldn't have kept it, not like people pack normally pack incendiary weapons, but I believe its unknown whether this was intended feature of incendiary rounds.

If you go on the ufopedia page concerning incedary rounds, you will note that fire damage is a bit wonky and still not fully understood. The game came out in 1994, and has a dedicated community, so that's saying something.

playing Fire Emblem Awakening has given me an urge to play XCOM:EW again.

I've beaten the game twice but never on Classic or Ironman. Please point me in the direction of the retard's guide.
>>
>>122251886
Start with classic ironman first of all. Abuse explosives, when no aliens are activated, move in conga line formations (first soldier moves up, then all follow directly behind) to avoid activations late into your game. Acquire as many engis as possible so you can acquire as many satellites as possible. Rush for laser weapons and then carapace armor. You can aborb soldier losses easily, but not mission losses. If you don't do plot/story research and missions, you can delay tougher enemies from showing up earlier. Turn off the dlc mission for most smooth sailing. Half cover is only good for absolute desperation, flanking ayys, and hunkering in. Assume half cover will screw you and that full cover will still screw you eventually. Instead, kill all ayys on activasion, or lock them down through disables, or break LOS or hunker. Gear your entire strategy towards early game (first two months) as that is the most difficult part. This includes stuff like selling loot for early cash. Interceptors are cheap so try to have them on any continent you have satellites on so ufos don't cause panic or shoot down your sats.

I think I covered all of it, or at least most of it.
>>

You basically did. Would only add that, while the Air Game is much easier than in Long War, you must still have 2-3 Interceptors around each continent as having only 1-2 (even with lasers) can be a risk. You can still pull it off as the AI really trends to concentrate on a continent or two at a time but do that only if you can spare the credits to simply throw more Interceptors into the mix.

This is so frustrating. Its the first terror mission, so I send my highest ranked troops, move as quickly as can be expected, take down the ayys wihtout a single person getting hit, and then on the last two floaters I misclick and send my soon to be corporal engineer to flanked cover instead of the heavy cover one tile away. And they get one shot critted and die. Its just so painful to toss a perfect mission away like that.

>I've beaten the game twice but never on Classic
My first game of EU that I am still getting done because I am a perfectionist and refuse to let anyone die is on Classic.

Easy and Normal aren't even real modes. They are for children. Are you a child?

In any case, >>122252551 has some good stuff except...
>move in conga line formations
You don't have to be that rigid. Just NEVER EVER yolo out into the mist. Use blue moves only and put everyone on overwatch even if nothing is activated because sometimes things will wander in and at least take some damage before finding magic full cover that works for them but not you. Abuse the sniper bug -- put one on overwatch with a pistol, switch to a different man, then manually select the "finished" sniper and switch weapons. He will now be overwatching with a rifle without Snap Shot. It also works through Squadsight.

>kill all ayys on activasion, or lock them down through disables, or break LOS or hunker.
Ayys will always outpace your max health with their weapons. Hunker will not save you. Disables don't help since they'll just run. Anything that is not a kill is a waste. Kill or be killed. "Break LOS" is bullshit advice since you can't both be on the attack AND have LOS broken, and not seeing ayys means getting caught by overwatch since ayys almost always overwatch when they can't see a guy and are already active. Be as aggressive as you can be without potentially activating more pods. Get squad size I and II as soon as possible because more guns means more killing per turn. Items that don't boost killing potential are a waste, too; skip medkits and armor that isn't the Skeleton Suit, Psi Armor or Archangel Armor. Even Archangel Armor is kinda shit compared to Skeleton Suits because of the +10 defense -- good for dashing up for 100% shots and praying overwatch misses.

>If you don't do plot/story research and missions...
This is not true in Vanilla. Enemies advance on a hard-coded schedule.
>>
>>122257241

>>
>>122256474
>trusting a game as unstable as xcom to Ironman mode
kek

if you think a misclick is bad, wait for someone's skeleton suit to straight-up fail or for your soldiers to be unable to move down an alley because your clicks won't register through the edge-of-map forcefield

or just simple shit like roofs not hiding properly or ayys getting multiple overwatch shots or soldiers clipping oddly into explosives or even guys deciding that they aren't in cover anymore because they are magically hovering a floor off the ground because their home planet needs them
>>
>>122257241
>>122257419
Eh, I wouldn't say ignore everything, but there are a few things that are wrong.

>Ayys will always outpace your max health with their weapons
Only true if your strategic game is not going well. Sure, some enemies will like mechtoids, but that's an exception, not a rule. Hunker can save you plenty of times when facing enemies that can't kill you with non-crit damage.

>Disable don't help
Disables are definitely good. Obviously if you can kill it, go for it, but just as I mentioned the mechtoid earlier, if you can't kill it just disabling shot it and then kill it next turn. Disables are good, but they are secondary to killing things.

>"Break LOS" is bullshit
Sometimes you won't be able to kill everything or disable everything, so this is next thing you look to do. It doesn't even have to be your whole squad, it could just be that one guy who you know can't take another hit.

>That is not true in Vanilla. Enemies advance on a hard-coded schedule
I didn't get into specifics, but delaying the storyline prevents aliens from deploying sectoid commanders, delays a tough mission, and obviously ethereals. If you are looking to get through an ironman campaign the safest possible way, then ignoring storyline until you have finished everything or need panic reduction is preferable.

>Archangel Armor is kinda shit compared to Skeleton suits
Archangel Armor is excellent for squadsight snipers (aim bonuses, and the defense doesn't matter cuz no one can see you)

Also a few other notes. Mechs and genemods are good, but you don't need either. I personally do recommend at least one mech for your squad just for the sheer utility of disables, close range damage, and aoiedamage, and cover destruction + limited tanking all packed into one package.
>>
>>122257419
>babby playing on Easy spotted
>>
>>122258093
>Only true if your strategic game is not going well.
Nope. Plasma is just that strong and you have that little health on Classic. Plasma pistols *can* one-shot rookies (4-6 damage) and LMPs WILL one-shot rookies (5-7 damage). Cover doesn't reduce damage for whatever dumb reason, either. Plating only adds 2 health or something stupid, so LMPs can still one-shot rookies and cripple squaddies. Plasma rifles and especially heavy plasma are life-threatening even to Corporals that aren't wearing power armor. Melee never stops being a death sentence (9+poison for chrissies, 16+ for berserkers)

>if you can't kill it just disabling shot it and then kill it next turn.
Nope. It's better to lure it into some overwatch fire, hope it takes some damage, and then finish it off on your proper turn. Full cover at least provides an opportunity to miss, and once you have skeleton suits (which is pretty early) full cover just barely becomes consistently useful.

>but delaying the storyline prevents aliens from deploying sectoid commanders, delays a tough mission, and obviously ethereals.
AFAIK commanders don't show up on normal missions anyway, and don't even hit that hard because they carry pistols and Psi is severely toned down since oldcom. They also don't like using it. The only thing it really "prevents" of note is Etherials, which come late enough that you have more than enough options to deal with them even in EU.

>Archangel Armor
The flight isn't great on a lot of urban maps and they lose relevance completely inside UFOs. The +10 defense on the skeleton suit is too good to ignore, too, and you can still get easy height advantages and fairly fast movement.

>Sometimes you won't be able to kill everything or disable everything,

Disabling shot will save you in those times you want to off everything but the Sectopod or when a second Sectopod (or third in the power room of the Assault Carriers) runs into the fight.

This. I had good results with pic related (not my screenshot) but I have to say that I reley more on Sniper MECs as their shots are much more accurate even with this exact same set up to I still prefer the aim bonus in overwatch.

I'm just going to have to say agree to disagree once again, because I know you won't concede a single point through discussion/argument. Here goes anyway, give it a shot in your own games.

I would say give archangel another shot for squad-sight snipers. If they aren't in sight of the enemy, then defense doesn't matter. In this case, squadsight snipers can properly take advantage of "break LOS." Besides, like you said you don't need defense if things are dead +20 aim means 100% chance to hit on enemies which means more kills. You put more killing on the top of your list and permanent height bonuses will help with that.

He is playing EW which has a certain tough mission that only comes about due to plot advancement.

>Maybe you should consider not fucking up next time, homie
That's the point though. I kill all of the heavy floaters and mutons elites leaving just the sectopod, which with its 50% damage reduction I know I can't kill that turn. But then one disabling shot later, and suddenly I haven't screwed up, in fact I now have a whole entire new turn of killing for free. Disable can be a get out of jail free card, and sometimes the game will just screw you over.

This is all experience from my latest Vanilla EW Classic Ironman, so I'm not theory-crafting or mixing in info from long war.

You also really undervalue hunkering, but whatever, I'm not sure how I'll persuade you on that. Its just a number game where my chance to kill the ayys is lower then the chances that hunkering will give me of surviving. If hunkering gives me a noticeably better chance of survival then shooting, I will take it.

Of course at certain points enemies will deal better damage then your armor, but you specifically stated
>Ayys will "always" outpace your max health
which is not true. At times you will have more max health, especially at titan armor.
It is good to see that you are at least learning from you own experience though.

Eh, I always found my aim high enough to offset it. This is at the stage of the campaign where everything can be debuffed to hell and back, while I can stack buff on buff. There could be an assault on the true invasional mothership that has dimensional/warp/stargates to all the invading species "homeplanets" to gather reinfrocments from, so after you take control of the ship, while temporaly supressing said gates, you would have to establish a beachhead, or close/destroy the door from the other side, for each gate, as they reestablish connection one after an another.

For some, you would send one-way missions, whos primary objective is to shut the door behind them, then seee how long you can last, with maybe the ayys just "letting" you leave via a ship or something if you are hardcore enough (or commandeer the ship yourself), or sine you are screwed anyway try to, blow the place/planet up.
Other planets would have you free that species from the collective by destroying their "proccessing facilities" (for example where floaters get chopped up), or take over the mind-controlling methods (like taking the pheromone that the Crysalids use to distinguish friend from foe)

I'm doing my second run (Enemy Within, vanilla, ironman classic) and I have some questions.

1. Are the SHIVs worth anything?

2. How to manage the air theater?

When I get the improved/UFO fighter, it's game over for the xenos, but until I get there, I don't know which is the best strategy. How many fighters should I put per continent? 1, 2? Should I buy weapon improvements and/or consumables? If so, when? How to prioritise them?

3-Which is the optimal time to Augment (i.e. turn into a MEC trooper) a soldier? I mean, at which rank?

Thanks in advance, /xcg/, and sorry for the newbiness.

1. SHIVs aren't worth much. An expendable albeit expensive gunner. On ironman, I guess you should make one or two.
2. I got nothing. Satellite rush, keep em flyin', break LOS, yada yada
3. Heavies and MECS have identical aim progression. All other classes should wait for Colonel.
>>
>>122369327
>I'm doing my second run (Enemy Within, vanilla, ironman classic) and I have some questions.
>1. Are the SHIVs worth anything?

You don't really need them in vanilla, one or two as backup don't hurt though but bringing them on missions when you don't have to is a waste of XP.
it's better to have 2 decent squads trained up, maybe more depending on your playstyle
3-4 per continent are enough
vanilla air game isn't that hard, use consumables when you're behind in tech but you can get away without using them

>3-Which is the optimal time to Augment (i.e. turn into a MEC trooper) a soldier? I mean, at which rank?
COL Snipers are pretty good because they get so much aim, supports aren't bad either.
if someone is injured for ages making them a MEC will get them back into action within 3 days IIRC
the higher the rank before chopping off their limbs the better the MECs stats basically

there isn't really any deep strategy to air game, it basically boils down too:

have 2 fighters minimum on every continent you have satellites on, 3 is probably enough if they have upgraded weapons. 1 is never enough

speaking of weapons upgrade them, they are not that expensive to built and you don't need to do seperate research for them

build a few boosts (aim track dodge ) for your fighters for very tough UFOs like battleships and overseer UFO

All right.

Should I try ironman impossible before moving to Long War?
>>
>>122381430
I/I is only hard during the first few months
LW Classic is the best experience if you look for a challenge.
LW Normal is the most fun.
LW Brutal is for when you know your shit
LW Impossible if you really know your shit and like getting bullshitted every second of every minute
>>
>>122381430
Nah, don't bother. Ironman impossible is just tedious for a bit, suffers the same backwards difficulty curve in the end either way.

Parroting what this anon said >>122381819
I suggest you either pick normal or classic. Normal if you just want to have some fun and being able to make mistakes without being too overly punished(still not an easy difficulty by any means), and Classic for the most non-bullshit challenge that long dong can offer.

One last question (sorry, I forgot). I never use shotguns for my assault soldiers. Which are the advantages? I try to stay the fuck away from the xenos so the shotgun never appealed to me.

Also it means researching more stuff (not just the usual assault rifle equivalent for laser and plasma).

What am I missing?

basically what others said except because of the range thing, they're useless at the beginning of the game since you don't have Lightning Reflexes to evade overwatch fire
skip scatter lasers though and just arm them with captured plasma rifles (light or normal) until you get alloy cannons. lasers suck except heavy lasers since heavy plasma comes so late. and maybe sniper rifles since ayys have no snipers to mug.

Long War is definitely fresh. The only things that are 100% objectively weak/ agreed upon bs is the airgame and the other endgame slog. You can edit the ini for the airgame, there's not much to be done about the endgame, but it takes a long time to even get there.

It adds tons of options for the tactical game which actually makes the early game pretty fun and gives you overpowered bs to fight against overpowered bs mid to last game.

also is it just me or does it feel like firaxis missed a killer thematic opportunity by not having a stage of weaponry above (or as a sidegrade to) plasma that only humans can field, like how the plasma sniper and alloy cannon are unique to XCom

alloy ballistics would be a cool tier to have actually. The Alloy Cannon is a cool concept and I like the dull peachy energy look of it to the lasers' and plasmas' eye-burning neon. and a return to conventional weaponry would be a nice "humanity just does it better" moment

In short, It gives you lots of bullshit, but gives you lots of options to deal with it. Midgame, almost every mission has an "oh shit" moment fairly early, and form then on its an epic struggle to deal with it and the stuff that keeps piling on, and feels quite nice if you succeed.

Also, you can edit just about everything in the ini. I practicaly eliminated the endgame grind by amping the UFO component survival rate +10%, psi lab capacity to 5, base psi succes chance to 80 (might have been too much), and restoring vanila arc thrower, among many other changes. (in my defense i was obsesive about equally lvling everonye in my barracks, so even when i had enough guys to man 4 OP groups, i still used my weaklings mostly)

That seems like a weird bug to have in the game for so long.

>>
>>122414546
Maybe we can get things like acid clouds getting displaced by things like fire and smoke, or maybe even the return of x-com smoke that could limit visibilty.

I'm hoping this has some depth to it where bizarre random things can interact, but you can also purposefully combo some environmental conditions if your creative enough.

>>122414770
It can be janky, and ccs will never activate if the two units involved are on different elevations.
>>
>>122414871
>different elevations
is this a hot new meme like "Break LOS" or something because I'm talking about times where a melee unit closed to melee range and then melee'd the CCS-having unit without CCS ever triggering

>>122414770
it's actually the opposite, CCS can activate with a dry gun and still do damage. I think some other abilities involving free overwatch firing can do it too, like Rapid Reaction
>>
>>122415036
No, I'm just stating its a know bug that if the elevations are different between the unit with ccs and its target, it won't activate. Floaters flying above assaults will not trigger ccs. I you have an assault on stairs, and say a lid or berzerker runs up to him from above or below, ccs will not trigger.

Both target units must be on the same elevation to trigger ccs.
>>
>>122403035
2K does own Irrational.
>>
>>122414770
>>122415036
I think its more tied to the camera. If its returning to standard position after showing say, an ayy runin an overwatch, and anything moves during this time, it wont trigger.

Does activating the command pod attract the others in LW?
>>
>>122431757
Yes, the command pod (outsider(s), later sectoid commanders and ethereals with escorts) will call for backup if you trigger them. They also can sometimes be outside of the bridge, but usually nearby.

oh. I didn't see that. I thought he encountered some weird bug.

yeah uh dude you fucked up. Dedicate a whole, like, 3x3 section to just power. you can slowly demolish it as you replace normal generators with elerium ones. build a lift first thing because you need to expand quickly at the start and not be a fucking moron using up all your power before you even have a working elevator
>>
>>122435325
He's clearly in vanilla, he's not going to need more than an elerium generator and steam gen the whole game
>>
>>122435610
I just finished a game and I just had two elerium generators, a steam one and I think one errant normal power generator

you'll need like 6-9 generators when they're still plain ones but you can demolish them and replace them with elerium generators as you go to make space for other stuff

Those holes in the wall can be shot through to kill the gunners without having to run past them.

>>
>>122440186

Just turn on commander's choice. You can then tailor your soldier's class to the stats that they roll, because usually they will roll something useful for one of the classes.

Strict screening will make your campaign harder. Your psi units late game will be very mediocre. Your officers won't have amazing will, your infantry and snipers will be less consistent, and it's just generally more difficult due to that.

They don't get squadsight but have enough aim to make high cover a trap.

Break LOS if you can't kill the pod in a single turn.

>>
>>122449281
Breaking LOS is not the same thing as gambling on overwatch, son.
>>
>>122449379
>fall back into the mist and just end the turn
>ayys move up
>fire on you
>wipe your squad
or
>fall back into the mist and go on overwatch
>ayys move up
>they get fired on
>all your guys miss
>fire on you
>wipe your squad

so either get no shots off, or do maybe 1-2 points of damage. hmmmmmmmmmmmm
>>
>>122449658
>activate pod
>can't kill them this turn
>hunker down one guy in heavy cover
>rest breaks LOS
>destroy cover, flank and kill
>>
>>122449658

Not breaking LoS and, if you can't, not hunkering in full cover if you can't grenade a pod to death is going to get you wiped out on impossible. The odds are against you. The ayys have better aim and bonus chance to crit, as well as the additional health.

The first couple of months are the hardest. Beyond that it's a bit more manageable.

For June in LW: shottys, AP and flashbangs. You can guarantee a zombie apocalypse mission in June to take lower rank troops that can use shotguns as to avoid using your A-Team for that terror mission. This'll normally ease the tension for increasing SALT activity where you need good dudes.

I need help, Vanilla, Ironman, Normal difficulty

I have around 500§, just unlocked the Archangel Armour and I am scarred of the Base Assault

In my previous campaigns I sucked horribly, but this time I managed to survive until August 6th

All my troops have the Skeleton Exosuit and laser weaponry, but I already unlocked Plasma Pistol, Titan Armour and Archangel suit, which one should I produce?

Or should I wait a little longer before going for the base?
>>
>>122470064
Fucking go to the base. Its piss easy like all story missions. Lasers and carapace tier is pretty much optimal for that.

And always go weapons before armor, especially in vanilla. So the next step is plasma and then ghost armors. 1 Archangel for your sniper and everyone else in ghost. Ghost >>>>>>>>> Titan

Got a problem with Enemy Within, the mission is "Friends in Low Places"
The game stops working at the exact moment the radio says "Heads up, Commander. We've got an intermittent contact. It's something different from the others.". It just straight up crashes. Anyone got an idea what that would be?
