Yeah they were, but in Zelda games your power increases at a predictable rate and eventually you have good enough weapons and enough hearts to make them a minor nuisance. In Isaac you are at the mercy of dice rolls for your power increases and they show up in early levels where you aren't likely to have much life or be very strong.

1. Connects 2-4 rooms

3. All of the connecting rooms have clear access to the wall where the door would be

Regular secret rooms will always border at least two other rooms. Those rooms can be the shop, curse rooms, item rooms, etc.

Super secret rooms will always attempt to spawn as close to the boss room as possible. They will never border two or more rooms, and cannot border a shop, item room, etc.

Never next to a boss room
Almost always connected to 2-4 rooms
The order in preference goes 3 rooms, 4 rooms, 2 rooms, 1 room.
No connecting room can have rocks, spikes, fire, or pits completely blocking the way to the entrance.


The super secret room rules are:
Always connected to only 1 room
Never connected to a special room
Most often found near the boss room
Same final rule as the regular secret room.

The latter is definitely a thing. Basically, the Secret Room will priortize spawning next to 3, then 4, then finally 2 rooms that have unobstructed paths to the wall (no chasms or rocks).

The Super Secret Room will only spawn next to a single room, and tries to be as close to the boss room as possible.

The frequency of the normal Secret Room being near the Shop is just coincidance, possibly because of the Shops spawning, not the Rooms. Likewise it happens to be bordering a Curse or Challenge room rather often.

Was replaying Rebirth challenges to see if Afterbirth fucked any of them up too bad, but man, I had forgotten some of the shit in Rebirth itself that was fucked up.

Mask of Infamy is some real bullshit. And this was on #5, Tank, so I had no real damage ups, no speed, and this fucker took me from max life down to 2 hearts. 9 Hearts damage in total when you count the Yum Heart use in battle, bottom pic is post heart drop.

And still got a Devil Room somehow. What the shit.

I heard it used to be even worse. I shudder to think it. I had to fight it by slinging shots at it and sometimes hitting it on the side when the tear splashed it somehow dealt damage. I never got a shot at it's back, moved too slow, tears moved too slow.

I'll take 3x Stain or 2x Forsaken any day over fucking Mask of Infamy. 2-3 of those would be cause to just hit R and forget the run unless you got a good piercer.
