(repostan from old thread)

I love when shit works well totally by accident.

Working on implementing my "busted pipe" asset for the Tier 6 "level falling apart" changes (as an aside, the procedural pipe asset I've designed is really awesome, I'm loving using it as a background decoration)

I decided to implement a little "steam spew" particle effect for this pipe; the original idea was, the pipe bursting would expose a pit in the ground and cast debris all over the arena, which would serve to switch it up, so I wanted it to look like the pipe had ruptured.

Due to a typo in my particle effect scalars, I accidentally made the steam spew so enormous it carpeted the entire arena in nigh-innavigable fog.

I liked it so much I decided to keep it. Makes for a really interesting dynamic when fighting aggressive enemies like this; the way transparency sorting is handled in Mayhem League, you can always see when you've HIT the enemy, but otherwise have very little sense of where he is in relation to you.

I do still intend to have debris get scattered, of course, but I wanted to share the fog-fight effect first. It's an effect I intend fully to replicate across all 3 or 4 arenas I planned to include a "ruptured pipe" at Tier 6.

(reiterating from old thread)

on and off agdg dev here from Pacifica

Is anyone still aware of this game? It has been in the works for maybe a year and a half to two years.

I have made some massive updates in the past few weeks and I have implemented a prayer mechanic and updated/fixed a ton of shit. I'm two steps away from a playable demo - I need to balance and pace the game.

The user interface is improved and more useful, the different alliances have their own powers now, and the gameplay has been tightened up. Everything is generally better.

When the game is done, I'm also going to release a version set in the map of the Caribbean, titled Carribea.

>i think my game should be sold because...
>I want more people to play it
Then put the game out for free, and by doing so you have no reason to answer this poll.
>I don't want to sell my game
Then why are you answering a poll that reads "i think my game should be sold because..." ?
>i think its gives extra motivation to finish my game
Have we not made it clear already that those who need "motivation" to do something are already doomed? And if it does give you motivation to finish your game, what is that motivation? Do you want to finish it so more people can play it? Then make it free and don't sell it. Do you want to finish it so you can make money and survive off your skills in gamedev? If so then
>i want success,popularity and money
Is probably the answer for your. Except it's a rigged answer intended to shame anyone here who is willing to have actual success. It's still the only correct answer. Even if you complete a game for free and it's good enough to be played by many, you are now popular. If you sell the game and it's good and becomes liked, you will have success in the form of popularity and money.
This poll is intended to shame anyone who is open to being truly successful, but that's because it's creator is a holier-than-thou "I do it for muhself" type of person, like the kid who plays his guitar horribly in his garage and calls any of his friends who join popular bands or become professional "sellouts".
It's easy to put a game out for sale and then sit back and watch it flop only to claim later "WULL I WAS JUST DOING IT BECAUSE I WANTED MORE PEOPLE TO PLAY MUH GAME" but it doesn't stand up to even the slightest bit of scrutiny because it's illogical, and a lie.
If your game was a failure, it's because it was a bad game. If you put it out for sale, it was because you wanted money and success, along with it will come popularity whether you wanted it or not. Most healthy human beings want to have success.

If you put a depth fade node on the steam spew material opacity, that line on the ground where it is "clipping" should go away.
>>
>>122048178
You can't sell a game without an intention for success. That's like saying you go swimming with the intention to float to the bottom and drown. Stop being dishonest with yourself and you can start being honest with others. People who habitually lie 24 hours a day tend to be horribly unsuccessful in life and always attempting to shame others or exert crab mentality on whatever social group they're clinging to at the moment.

Whatever. You're trying to conflate success of a game with "I JUST WANNA BE POPULAR PLEASE LIKE ME"
You could have made popularity and financial success two separate options. Every other option in the poll is bogus for reasons already explained. Anyone saying they're selling their game because they want more people to play it is simply afraid of admitting to wanting success, because you've already conflated that with "p-p-please like me".

Maybe instead of playing this game you should just admit that you're selfconscious about 2D? Stop being a wimp and go 3D. If you're afraid to because you're already committed to a 2D project, stop being a wimp and finish that, or start a 3D side project.

How to give an object a parent while in-game in Gamemaker Studio?

'set_object_parent' is supposedly obsolete?

I don't want the parent already set before the game starts because the player needs to choose his team first, but I want the player to be assigned to his team via parent object obj_red_team for example, by the time the match is underway.

I'm trying to avoid adding more variables to the if statement.

Here's what I want to put:

//(Slap Attack Left) If standing on wall object, and facing left, and RED TEAM is within melee attack distance, and slap is available, use Slap Attack Left.

if image_xscale == 1 //if facing left
and can_slap == 1 //if slap attack is available
and (place_meeting(x-100,y+0,obj_red_team)) //if obj_red_team is 100 pixels to the left
and (place_meeting (x,y+1,obj_wall)) //if standing on obj_wall
{
sprite_index = spr_slap_attack; //current animation changed to slapping animation
alarm[4] = 60; //cooldown for can_slap
alarm[5] = 20; //create instance of obj_slap_collision_left after 20 steps
}

But this code won't work until the player has been assigned to a team, and I want the code to adjust to whatever team is being picked, not necessarily just red.

This happens consistently with scripting. I feel like I'm so close to figuring it out, only to find out I need to add another step to the code, but that step needs another variable clarified, and then that one needs another, and it goes on forever until somehow I manage to chase down enough variables. And by that time I always have a huge list of 'ifs' in the if statement.
>>
>>122076726
I don't really see why you wouldn't want to solve this problem by adding another variable, but if you really want to use inheritance you could just make two classes derived from both player and obj_team: 'player_red' and 'player_blue'. I'm not sure whether Game Maker permits inheriting from multiple sources, however.

Also, you shouldn't use the rendering options of an instance to represent its state, such as you're doing now to test if it's facing left. Instead make a separate member variable and making the rendering options parallel that. It's less error-prone.

>I don't really see why you wouldn't want to solve this problem by adding another variable
I had a reason for it but it was confusing enough that it somehow didn't work because I need the variable to be adjustable. I can try again, maybe it's really late and I'm dumb but I'll give it another shot. A lot of this stuff is new to me, so when I try to think ahead about what variables I need and how all the objects remember the word to describe this scenario, whatever that word is. Like when the numbers are so out there and they don't apply to me yet, but I know they will when the time comes.

>I'm not sure whether Game Maker permits inheriting from multiple sources, however.
Gamemaker only allows you to choose one parent object.

>make a separate member variable and making the rendering options parallel that. It's less error-prone.
Thanks! So this is why it acts wonky when I try to turn left and right while an attack is happening. The character stops moving, or gets an extra attack. Or sometimes it just works as intended. I'll separate them now.

C could use some amputation - but most scripting languages are that way. They are also all blurring together for me these days, been through so many. Seems every other game has its own independent scripting language these days - thought LUA woulda put an end to that, but alas.

>C could use some amputation
maybe in terms of style, but that's all superficial crap. GML has no pointers, no code-only structs, the arrays are shithouse, it's slower than a special olympics runner up so anything you need for computationally intensive code is behind a callback function, and any of the decent implementations like OOP are hamfisted

scripting languages are nice for simple design stuff, but as soon as you step outside that boundary, which unfortunately GML slightly does, it gets awkward

>>122078341
Meh, no one's invented "the perfect language", but the main point of a scripting language is to macro-manage tasks, and make it more accessible to the layman. Pointers are usually the first thing they get rid of, as that goes in the category of unintuitive for most beginners. (Plus, provided you have a function to access the properties of the object, and copy objects, you don't really need them.) While the lack of structs in a lot of them ticks me off sometimes, the better ones get rid of variable types and provide simpler scope control as well, which is kinda of nice.

...and really, given the sophistication of compilers these days, C, and all its flavors, could do a lot more stuff for you, without simultaneously preventing access to better optimization and nitty gritty stuff.

Still, one does not normally expect to add simplicity without some sacrifice of control. It'd just be nice if more languages provided a happier medium - but much like what goes on a pizza, it's rare to find two people who can agree as to what that happy medium is.

The game is turn-based. I have the most stupid problem imaginable: since attacks always come in flurries of 3 at a time I can't find a way to make cleaving through multiple opponents not look really stupid.
>>
>>122076726
Same anon here. I realized why I need to avoid variables.

So when the game runs and player 1 selects the versus mode, it will go to a character select screen.

The player will choose his team (blue) and then his character, and then his teammates, and then the enemy's team (red). Then the match starts (Human and AIs vs AIs).

When the enemy character gets within a certain distance, it needs to automatically attack the player. The problem is that I can't set objects to automatically be enemies because they can also be chosen to be on the same team. I need temporary teams, not permanent ones.

Below is the full code for the enemy attacking the player. (Same thing as earlier but without deleting what I thought was unnecessary to show you guys) Notice how both teams are already set in stone with 'player' and 'enemy'. I want the obj_player to be 'dynamic'. As in how do I get the obj_player to change to something like obj_enemy_team_for _this_match_only? I can't use 'enemy team' as a variable because what if I chose the current enemy as an ally? lol I can't even describe what I need because I don't think it exists. I need an object that can be assigned a parent whenever I want, but I need that object to 'be' the parent too. Does that even make sense? Like when obj_player is detected, I actually want the parent to be detected instead.

(Ran out of space so will post code in next reply)

Ok. So I started playing Minecraft, and I got flooded with memories. I came up with the idea, and most parts of the game, which I told to someone in University. They were building the game, and would constantly ask me what to do next. I didn't really care too much because of how busy I was at the time. No one believes me though. I barely believe it myself, but I remember too many details about it.

I don't want any money or anything, even though I'm struggling right now. What I would want in an official endorsement, to help me get funding for an idea that I really want to do. Anyone have any thoughts?

Ew... This hurts just to look at. I pitty you, if it's really making you do things this way.

Does not the language in question allow you to pull the range between two objects? Can you make a function for that? Is it possible for the target to somehow teleport within that range and not trigger it? If not, and the previous isn't available, can't you just check the min and max ranges? Can you dump place_meeting into a variable and pull the X vec just to make this look cleaner, at least?

Also, for sake of optimization, unless that last and conditional is nearly always true, you wanna do that "//if obj_kat5 is 700, 600, 500, 400, 300, 200, or 100" check last. Check whatever's least likely to be true first, and do the most complex check last. (Though it seems it should not need to be that complex to find if something is 100-700 units range.)

Thanks, I'll try all of these. At the time I just wanted to see this thing in action so I got too excited and only used what I knew at the time (Which was very little). I'm going back and fixing the code to be more legible, but this enemy object is still largely untouched since I haven't gotten back to it yet. Right now I'm focusing on UI stuff so that's why I need to know how to implement teams. Once I have the main gameplay actually in the game, then I'll work on cleaning it up.

You should have seen the rest of it. There's still behaviors and collisions for about 240 lines of code, all in the same spot, with half of them being copy-pasted because I have separate identical code for everything when the enemy looks in the other direction. And that's just for the AI enemy. The player character used to have over 2,500 lines of code in the same block of code, half of it also copy-pasted when the player looked in another direction.

>>
>>122081048
For me it's easier to keep track of distance when I have the values set up this way because the enemy will use a different move depending on how close they are. I was testing the different distances to see which ones worked for this particular attack. I don't have the other attacks ready yet so for now I've filled them with this one attack. But yeah, I should probably change it soon.

Nah, you can make Oblivion also

when I watched a speedrun of this at AGDQ, the only thing that tipped me off to this being Source is the windows. They used that weird sugar glass entity for all of it. Which wasn't even used extensively in HL2 anyway

also E.Y.E., except the big tip-off in that one is sparks. They didn't replace spark effects. That and one hazard stripe texture that's also honestly pretty hard to spot unless you work with it a lot since it's a very generic texture. But other than that, it looks more like its daddy Quake than the younger Source.

lightning is done with models in EP2 and is not dynamic at all. The particle effect implemented with Source07 probably could do lightning, but it's a case of "why bother" when you can just make a model/sprite for it to throw in the skybox in an afternoon instead of taking two months to program a proper dynamic lightning effect

if you meant "volumetric lighting", source has always had global illumination, supports texlights, and has packaged in models, textures and volumetric particle widgets for light beams through dust

I wanted to make a pointer you move with the arrow keys but I don't know how to make it interact with the inventory slots, with the items, and how to make it select/deselect the items, drag and drop them, etc.

I'm working in Unity so the inventory is on the UI canvas, that has the event system that would be exactly what I want except it's made to work with the mouse movement.

Anyway, I was thinking about how Animal Crossing did it on GCN, where you click on an object, the tooltip menu appears and you can select "grab" from there. I guess I'll try doing it that way.
My game is not action oriented so it should be fine.

okay i'm back after sleeping
here's the code
i can put it up on pastebin if you want

so here's the issue i'm having:
let's say you're moving left and you smack into a wall
you stop moving left since the collision is detected and you can move off to the right just fine
however if you keep holding left and then press up or down, the vertical movement is slower than it's supposed to be

how can i fix this?
i apologize if the code is a pile of unintelligible shit, i don't really know what i'm doing

i am using that collision code because apparently the built-in "solid" functionality is bad and shouldn't be used

>>
>>122091652
Mainly in code readability and debugging.
>>
>>122091790
From everything I've heard, it's about showing off that you can program, not about good game design.

Interviewers that aren't shit will know what to look for and maybe make you fix/change some shit to prove you can do it.

If they look at your game and say "wow this gameplay is shit" then that should be a red flag for YOU that you don't want to work there.
>>
>>122074272
Anon what Game engine you will use?
>>
>>122091790
>I suck at game design...

Doesn't matter. If your portfolio is for the purposes of getting you a job, what matters is your ability to implement shit, not your ability to come up with new and original ideas. Quick delineation: Programmers figure out how to make happen what the designer wants to have happen.

The most important thing is making complete shit, not how well designed the shit is. The more things you make, the quicker you will figure out what makes shit good, anyway.

Yo, anybody want any voice acting for their game? I'm a ~sound recordist and editor~ for film and also do sound stuff for events but am curious about voice directing so kinda want to give it a go.

Equipment I have is mostly geared towards production sound for film but it's good quality stuff (Sennheiser 416, SQN 5S) so it won't be studio quality but it'll be pretty nice.

I'll also do any editing/processing/effects stuff you want too.

Kinda wanna work on one or two small projects for free in this capacity just to see what it's like. Anybody working on anything that might be suitable?

I want to tell a story. Writing is acceptable, but I am of the belief that sounds and even the most basic of visuals, if done correctly, add immensely to the experience. As such, my options become to either make an animation or a video game. In the case of the animation, I'd need to do a really damn good job, as standards are high. If I make a video game, I can have poor graphics with minimal animation as that is considered acceptable as long as you have fun gameplay. So, the best choice for me is to make a video game that tells the story I want to tell. I've got decent ideas to make the gameplay fun, as well.
>>

I think you're looking to make a visual novel. They have sound, basic visuals, minimal animation and no gameplay, so you can focus on the story. If you want take the rabbit hole route, you can use something like UE4/Unity/Gamemaker etc. to make something with poor graphics and fun gameplay, but I think that may detract from the story you want to tell.
>>
>>122094812
It's true.
Approximately 360–400 million people speak English as their first language, whereas anywhere from 470 million to well over 1 billion people speak it as their second language. The second language statistic is obviously super hard to get right, and that's why the numbers are so far apart, but even at the bare minimum it's still way more people than native speakers.
This counts only people who can speak the language well enough to properly communicate, so the guy screaming at you in Dota to "SUCK DICK OFF ME KURWA" by all accounts probably isn't in. Yeah, there's a decent amount of those, but most of the time they don't actually speak the language past just parroting swear words and insulting/meme phrases.

I DID consider a visual novel, but that provides some issues:
Firstly, voice acting is expected, but not appreciated at all. It's either there and it's good quality work OR people are upset.
Secondly, visual novels require character art, and it has to be damn good since you'll be staring at them the whole time. Same for backgrounds.
Thirdly, visual novels have an unspoken rule of "if the main character doesn't have graphic sex, it's shit."
Basically, the standards are pretty damn high, and I can't meet them without spending my non-existent money on commissioning artists and VAs.

Nowadays, we get games like LISA and Undertale popping out of the woodwork with honestly pretty shitty graphics and animation, but they still manage to captivate tons of people with their story, characters and just a bit of interesting gameplay.
In my case, I believe making a game in a similar vein would work. All you need is a good story and characters, fun or even just okay gameplay and fitting music (super bonus points if it syncs up to stuff). Most people can just accept or ignore shitty graphics these days.
I'm even playing around with the idea of having an action-based combat system, but have the out-of-combat stuff be just text. Like, text adventure style "Ye find yonself in yon dungeon. The exits are: NORTH WEST DENNIS" but a bit more tame so it won't intimidate people.
I've done some mock sketches and if I can get the game to be similar to them, I think it'll be pretty cool.
As for the gameplay detracting from the story... I haven't thought about that being the case. It may very well end up like that. I'll have to be careful, but I think I can pull it off.

It's good to know that my horrible education won't be too much of a bother.
I'll go get GameMaker and start messing around.

I'm afraid that in such case, even if the game's main selling point was the story, people would most likely skip all the story to get back into combat.

If people are interested, I can send over some films that I've worked on recently but that's not really directly applicable. I've also got a sample recording of my voice to demonstrate audio quality but that doesn't really reflect acting quality as it is just me reading a documentary voiceover script and I won't actually be acting if I am working on a project.

Yeah, that's a thing I'm worried about.
I've got a little design document for it, and I've got a few ideas on how to deal with that issue.
You seem to care, what do you think about this:
The combat system is a horizontal shooter, Gradius-type thing.
The background is mostly black with a few accents depending on the fight.
I could have a setting that allows people to skip the boring nerd shit and have the game constantly throw enemies at them while the really important story stuff scrolls by in the background as text. They can choose to ignore it or read it while playing.
The game would then play in an arcade style, where all level transitions and basically everything is done for the player, and all they have to do is focus on not dying and shooting the enemies and getting powerups.
The game actually started out like this in my head, but I figured that if people really cared about the story they'd get tired of constantly pausing to read the stuff in the background and they'd want more detail to boot.

Using good looking placeholder (something that has been ripped from other game) is more motivating than fucking ass looking placeholder. That's why project tundra dev used that bird from kirby and if you saw his placeholder before he took the sprite from kirby, you understand why he did it.

I can't really objectively tell you what would be the best way to get around the issue but what I suggest is that you write down each of the ideas that you have regarding dealing with the issue then evaluating each of them individually (as in pros and cons groups). Then see which one has the most pros and how to improve the cons.
>>
>>122098373
Not that guy, but that's a fair point. For me personally, though, having the game look like ass at first is just a natural part of the development cycle. It's extremely rewarding for me to go back and replace all of my awful art and see the game really begin to take shape, like placing the last piece in a large puzzle. I've also found that a bunch of different placeholder assets from different games cobbled together tends to look pretty bad, and demands much more work than a quick mspaint doodle.

I got Universal sound fx, but I guess it depends on the sort of game.

'hit block whatever sounds' suggests you're making a 2D game and that pack is more focused on realistic effects rather than beep boops, for which bfxr can probably do what you need.

Material: Information that complements a texture, e.g. reflectivity
Shader: program that runs on the GPU (divided into several parts, not all of them do texture calculations)

Material is the type i.e wood, metal et cetera; shader is what the color shade is i.e red, green et cetera.

A material is stored as a .mat file and it's what material the object is.
A shader is a .shdr file and it controls how the material changes when the light changes

The fuck is wrong with you, you call everything a shitpost, get over yourself.

I fixed the post because I wrote Material twice, And I gave him a correct definition, he didn't ask what specifically, if its some kind of term used in some engine for something else then he should have specified.

You, can go fuck yourself, and I swear I wish everyone in your family got stabbed for every time you posted the term "shitpost" in this thread you inbred sack of nigger shit.

Actually, he did rig it up as part of a game development course, and even got a Orion GDev award for it.

I think the proximity activation to MOB would require some coding though. Can't think of a way to do that with Hammer.

Unless you're saying everything Source engine development isn't game design, cuz, I'd hate to tell you this, but about maybe 20% of the retail games out there are running on that. The SDK is actually pretty sparse - takes a lotta work to code up most Source games. Granted, probably not so much work for Blind Monk's Society - as well as some of these other "quicky" HL2 mods you see people do for classes. But Postal 3? Vindictus? Left4Dead? Come on....

"Look mah, I got no engine!", is just a silly bar to set.
