Hey guys, I've been working with a music contractor for my game for a little while now, and ultimately I don't think I like what he's come up with for the game music. I'm going to pay him of course, but I'm not sure I want to actually use the music in the game, or at least not have it be the "default" music...
I was thinking I might want to allow the player to cycle through a few possible music choices to have running while playing (the state never really changes in the game, so the music just loops forever), so part of the approach might be that I do include this guy's music for gameplay, but that's not the "default" track, it's just possible for the player to select if they want to change the music up.
I don't want to offend the guy or insult him in any way, but I don't want him to see the game come out and then see his music doesn't appear in it obviously.
Have you guys dealt with this before? What has your approach been as far as approaching the contractor to let them know "Thanks, but I probably won't include this in the game?"
This is not really a question about legality or contracts, really just etiquette.

You either didn't vet him or monitor him well enough. I feel like a sample of his music should have been enough for you to know if it would work for your game.

Don't include bad music to make someone feel better. If it doesn't work, tell him, pay him and move on and both of you will be smarter from the experience.

>I don't want to offend the guy or insult him in any way

You're literally paying him for a service, you have every right to tell him you don't think that what he's come up with so far is matching what you had in mind. Do you really have so much money to burn that you're willing to just chalk it up as a loss and pay somebody else to start from scratch?

Not saying that you have an obligation to speak up or anything, but damn.

You do good work, yesdevs. Be proud of what you've accomplished in your game. Continue to work on it and keep your head up. :)

And to the nodevs, it's never too late to join the yesdevs. And if you still need time to figure out if that's what you want to do, in the meantime, don't be a bully. Be a happy little friend instead. Because everyone needs a friend. :)

I believe in all of you. Good luck!

part of the reason I want to use 8x8 sprites is that they're super fucking easy to pseudo-animate using my engine rather than actually drawing animation frames on the bitmap. If I have complex, higher-res sprites, the armor overlay becomes extremely complex and annoying. I think I could pull it off with 10x10 which would just require me drawing a new sprite base but anything higher than that just turns making my fun amateur game into a chore.

There are only 40 games and I think people primarily just look for the kind of games they like. You're only really competing with other games in your genre.

Of course, if you're making something generic like a pixel platformer then yeah, you're going to have competition from other AGDG games. But that's nothing compared to the competition you'll face in the real world.

basically, I can easily draw some decent-looking 16x16 pixel art sprites, but I can't do modular gear on them without going to a lot of trouble. If I do some simple 8x8 I can do a whole load of shit to them after the fact--shaders, particles, various types of movement (vibration, rotation not just x and y but also z, etc.)

Just like they did in rotmg

I didn't imply this you god damn retard, stop thinking that games are something that need to be further industrialized and washed out for mass appeal (where competition is real since nobody wants to buy the same game 10 times)

Make unique games and you don't need to try to sabotage others to succeed

The scaling yes, as when you look at the pixels each pixel is 2x2 or 3x3 or whatever.
Some games will scale up the pixels but wont keep them on the pixel grid. So pixels will be able to move half way across another pixel because they're scaled up.

Don't use mixels. Keep all pixels the same scale.

I think the character sprites look just fine. Other than highly-detailed sprite work I don't really see why it's an issue. You can go sharper within the same pixel canvas size but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll look better. Most times when people try to cram tons of detail in it just ends up looking like some RPG maker game anyway.

Listen man, I'm going to stop replying to this graphic discussion after this:

Look at this image. Do you see how every single pixel is the same size and every single pixel is lined up even though the image is scaled by 2x? This is what I like, I don't care how big or small your sprites are (although I prefer characters that are 16x16). As long as every single effect, every single sprite, every single tile aligns with the pixel grid even when scaled up in size, and there's no mixels, that's all that matters to me.

But it doesn't really matter, do what you want to do. This is just my opinion. If you can't see what I'm talking about then I can't help you.

I love you man, I want you to make the game you want to make. I hope you can solve this graphic decision soon.

Mixels look like trash, in my opinion. They are not aesthetically pleasing, they ruin the illusion of a low-resolution game. However, if you're making 8x8 sprites you probably don't care about mixels because you really just want to pump something out with minimal thought put into art so that's fine, just don't expect people to praise your game's artstyle.

I know I'm probably going to come off as a complete fool, but I have a question.

If I am fairly competent in Java how hard would something like game maker script (or whatever it's called) be for me to learn and use well?

Well, there should still be sound effects, just comfy sound effects. Having no dialogue can work, but might be weird when it's humans that just aren't talking. Look at Journey, that was a comfy game with absolutely no words, but the characters were all fully cloaked or non-human so it wasn't uncanny that they didn't talk.

Why is making games so hard? Why has no one figured out a way to make it easy? Easy would be measured by an increase in the proportion of Started to Completed projects. Modern engines have not increased this ratio. In fact, they have probably decreased it because everyone starts and no one finishes.

So, why can't someone make an engines that can make it easy?(defined by the ratio stated above).
>>
>>121866939

>>
>>121867016

>>
>>121867016
That ratio relies completely on the persons personal discipline to finish a project. No engine, no matter how simple it is will ever be able to make a lazy person finish a game.

The characters in game along with the player's character do communicate, I just thought that it would be cool if there were no visible dialogue, that way I could increase the atmosphere and the sort of implied/inferred interaction. For example, cutesy romancing could happen but it wouldn't be dependent on some autist's bad dialogue writing skills--it would just be two characters connecting and the player sort of filling in the gaps.

I guess this is probably a dumb idea but it sounded nice to me. Dialogue isn't hard to implement, I guess--it's just time-consuming and easy to screw up.
>>
>>121867593

Honestly there's nothing that can increase the ratio. Maybe one day 100 years from now when a computer AI can literally write an entire game based on a few paragraphs that you input.

The ratio doesn't even show anything important. Like I said it completely depends on the persons personal discipline. If they can't force themselves to finish a game there's no engine that can make them.

why are you replying to this post with more off-topic nonsense

>>
>>121867674
I think it's a fine idea in itself. It definitely could work. But the nature and quality of the content which is included will determine how the player bridges the gaps, and "creates" that content which isn't included. That is how game atmosphere is made basically (though more gaps does not equal more atmosphere, atmosphere is independent of amount of content). In my opinion writing is one skill and making good characters is another, and together they make "writing good characters". So even if you feel this is a good way to expand the emotional content of your game without having to write, you still should know how to make good characters, and know how to properly facilitate the player's interaction with these characters so that the illusion comes about that the player can feel what the characters are saying, without them saying anything at all. In some cases I might even consider that harder than just writing what they say, but it's an admirable goal, so go for it.
>>
>>121865898

you probably don't need to prematurely optimize
I made a rewinding time demo where I copied N particles each frame to a new buffer and besides taking a fuckton of memory it ran perfectly fine for N < 10000

What game? I hope it's mine, demo day 2 was the last time I did a demo.

I don't really understand the crusade against premature optimization when one system would take just as long to implement as the other, so there's no reason not to figure out which is better beforehand

I'd just like to be able to safely spawn like 300 bullets in the same frame and not have to worry about anything

Shows off the title / company name / developer name.

Lets you choose settings / account / etc all in one place rather than cluttering up the pause menu or wherever.

Adds a bit of polish over just dropping you straight into the game.

Sure you can do without but those things are nice.

How did you come to this realization? It's the truth. What you're going to see is that they are both obsessed about the same person as well because he pointed them out so long ago.
>>
>>121868458
>Either he's Mothdan or he's pathologically obsessed with him
It's the latter. There's more than one of them and they're both obsessed.
>>121868675

Once again, it's the latter.
>>
>>121878163
A couple times they got banned at the same time and this place was suddenly chill as fuck.
>>
>>121878163
I've noticed patterns over time. They'll reply to themselves at regular intervals or in patterned intervals, they have similar writing styles which are consistent through many of their posts, etc. Perhaps more importantly he or they will approach trolling/arguing in the same manner each time, with this a sort of childlike goading, constantly moving the goalposts and just saying whatever it takes to sort of take what he perceives to be the high ground in an imaginary argument, and all of these things carry a similar signature each time. When you spend enough time lurking here it becomes obvious. Same shit, day after day, week after week, month after month...

This person or group of people is legitimately mentally infirm
>>
>>121876638
>object pools _are_ harder to get right then naive alloc/free, which is harder then just getting a GC to do it for you
It's just an array that searches for the first unused object in it
>>
>>121878365
I understand, I've seen it as well. Unfortunately I've never seen it remain free of them for more than 24 hours so until they come back and continue ranting about mothdan/danny. I believe they dodge bans and this has been proven as well at certain points. They get very upset and do silly things to foil themselves all the time because they are essentially mentally deranged. Best to stop talking about them now.
It is disturbing to see that one in particular has publicly denounced agdg, tried to kill it with a second site, made public announcements he was leaving forever multiple times and is still here and still talking about the same person he blamed on his tumblr for his own unraveling on agdg.
>>
>>121878449
>This person or group of people is legitimately mentally infirm
It is two individuals already outed, and yes they are clinically insane. Watching their behavior over the past few days has been surreal.
>>
>>121878449
>Same shit, day after day, week after week, month after month...
This is the most disturbing part, their tenacity. They really do shitpost fulltime. They think they're creating "memes" as bizarre as it sounds, by simply repeating the same thing everyday. They also think they can scare devs away by stalking them or talking about them incessantly to the point that the dev becomes a meme. It doesn't seem to be working for them, though.

Thanks everyone who played the game. I've taken into account the suggestions made in the comments and have already implemented a few fixes accordingly. Don't worry, the name is temporary.

One of the major ones is being able to use the scroll wheel to change attack types. It's kinda screwy and I need a better attack type indicater other then the text but that'll have to wait.

I need to start working on the main menu and I'm not really sure how I should set it out. I just can't think of what kind of a layout the play, options and exit buttons should be to match the artstyle I have. Any ideas?

So, retard coding force is at it again, i'm trying to instantiate a gun prefab at camera position, while making camera it's parent(for obvious reasons). And i get
>InvalidCastException: Cannot cast from source type to destination type.
PickUpScript.OnCollisionEnter () (at Assets/PickUpScript.cs:12)
This error, the gun spawns alright but it doesn't become camera's child. Here's the code:
using UnityEngine;
using System.Collections;

public class PickUpScript : MonoBehaviour {
public Transform Gun;
public GameObject Player;
public Vector3 PlayerVector;
public GameObject GunClone;

void OnCollisionEnter(){
PlayerVector = Player.transform.position;
GunClone = (GameObject)Instantiate (Gun, PlayerVector, Player.transform.rotation);
GunClone.transform.SetParent (Player.transform, false);
Destroy(gameObject);
}

>>
>>121879372
You have no idea how correct you are. His bullying is vicious and non-stop, it's not the same kind of elementary level bullying that the other one does, it's more of a truly vindictive kind. It's sad to watch sometimes, and even harder when you see it working on naive devs who just came to agdg because they thought they would have a home here with other devs.
He essentially got wrapped up in a mission to bully one particular dev and has never recovered from his failure on that, so he blames that dev for everything, stalks him, and continues to talk about him everyday on agdg along with his other boogeymen.

This is another reason they are obsessed with one dev in particular who came here and said no to anime shitposting and no to pedodevs. One of them considered himself a self-proclaimed "well liked" dev and happened to be both of those things. Now look at him. Lurking in the shadows, shitposting 24/7, no more progress updates. Just non-stop bullying and shitposting.
>IT'S PART OF DUH CULTURE MUH /B/ TARD CULTURE IN AGDG
It's more than can be said for the other who has never gone beyond gmod, though. They just both happen to be mentally broken individuals obsessed with one person who called them out on their shit.

first big project as in has completed many little projects?

If so, sure, RPGs tend to be light on coding and heavy on content. Meaning you will have to make a LOT of content. LIke, pages and pages and pages and pages of text for random "you interacted with a thing" in addition to the actual dialog.

Also so many visuals. Settings, enemies, npcs, equipment, spell animations.

Shit tons of content..

But relatively easy to actually code, so, yeah, why not. have fun with it, do it section by section so you can always feel like you're completing things.

added a charge punch attack. not sure if i wanna keep it like this because charging up to the max level is almost never useful if people are kiting you because it pushes you too far (but it deals more damage). although i guess its kind of a cool idea since its a big risk. if you charge up for a high damage punch you run the risk of going through the group before punching and dealing no damage while also putting yourself in the middle of the group and taking damage

30k copies is still 150,000$ (or 100,000$) realistically.

Expect not to exceed that profit and budget your time appropriately, if you want to be making more than $50k a year for example, do not spend more than 2 years on a 5$ game.

Hello again friends! I have compiled a long list of reviews for your games now that the deadline has passed and I've gotten everything in. Don't "fur"get to read the disclaimer!

If your game is not on here, it means
1. I could not play it due to the control scheme (only console controller)
2. Your game was just too simple for a review and didn't resemble a game yet and thus needs no feedback
3. It looked like a joke submission due to the pictures/previews!

Feel free to ask questions to possibly provide extra clarity on the reviews.

Hi felix, I'm going to review your review

-most of your points are based on aesthetics which is a matter of taste
-please be more specific with your critics, it will help the devs more if you can expound on what you find wrong or bland
-quality > quantity, if you can't make 20+ reviews a helpful feedback for each then consider doing only 5 but more in-depth

>>121889392
Maybe I will Lois... Maybe I will.

>>121889583
Your right, a couple of my points are based on aesthetics! These are very important points too. If people plan to release their game to the public, the first thing every person that looks at their game sees is the aesthetics. This alone can decide whether or not someone even takes a look at your gameplay or your trailer, which is important if you don't want to end up selling 10 copies.

Last demo day there was a chart similar to mine, however it only reviewed like 8 games and it wasn't in depth at all. I attempted to recreate it and improve it; which took me a while. These are just general points that I felt during my playtime of the game; general feelings that anyone out there might possibly be annoyed by. I felt like this is probably more helpful then a crazy in-depth review by someone who is already passionate about the game they're reviewing.

Whew. Now I know why real programmers say to just finish the project you're on instead of rewriting it.

I'm not even doing real programming, just scripting in GML, but even just renaming things or splitting my code up into more organized and manageable parts is time consuming. Luckily I'm still in the beginning phase with barely a few playable characters, but damn, I'm still only halfway through the edits I want to make.
>>
>>121892535
Both have their neat things about them. I think players are more likely to try new things if you divide into classes, though.

Perhaps give players classes which heavily define them, but you can still branch out as you level up, if you really want.

>Feels too slow and clunky/freezy

Played through myself, and got the sense that it was more inspired by a game like Circle of the Moon, as opposed to the faster paced Igavanias.

For what it's worth, my major beef with the controls was more a general feeling of instability, while I really liked the actual pacing of combat - felt like my actions were more deliberate and felt better able to gauge things like jump distance. I thought it worked especially well against the boss, really gave it a "grounded, scrappy duel" flavor.

Incidentally, these are the things I liked about CotM in the first place. Maybe it's a matter of taste?

What's a good general approach for programming projectiles? I'm thinking I could have a base projectile class with basic properties and functionality, then for each type of bullet needed I would make a derived class with individual properties/functionality. This would result in a lot of different class files, but the alternative of having some sort of if-else chain or switch statement in the projectile class that applies properties based on some string or integer ID seems clumsy.

8 is a solid number. I'd either make the legs kick out a little less behind him, or hold them there a little longer. They're covering a lot of distance in a single frame, which is making them appear jerky. The arm pump and torso twist look really good, though.

it is, it wasn't invented to do complex stuff, but for level designers to quickly add simple functions i.e. blue key opens blue door type stuff

artists also like to be able to drag and drop effects in a shader editor, but even then if you want to do any complex stuff you really need to just write actual shader code

It's a puzzle adventure game.
You go around town and neighboring areas building relationships with people to get clues and quests to figure out what's happening and build your courage. The game isn't going to be entirely linear so you can do most of these when (or if) you want at your own pace.

Story is a supernatural murder mystery.
You play as an incompetent cowardly detective, who after his girlfriend dies finally decides to work up the courage to investigate.
There's more to the plot than that but I'm too exhausted to type it all down right now.

You could replace the magic number "2" with an actual constant. Also it seems that you're going for executing the script on the fly? Instead you could load it on startup and make it look like pic related, then just have a function that fetches the SpellCharge (or just Spell$NAME$ table), then calls the fields that it needs to.

How so many people are having hard time figuring out how to climb stairs? Have they never played castlevania game? I even have readme that explains how to climb them. Im not going to make PC automatically climb them as then you'd have to do something extra like press down or up to NOT get on them. I think the gameplay would suffer more from this, because in middle of combat you would be always accidentally getting on them.

>>121899998
My bet is that the coordinates of the object turn into floating-point due to the gravity acceleration; and the sprite_draw method you're probably using is drawing the sprites using the floating point coordinates as origin, causing problems.

Try to round the x and y coords for the sprite_draw function them and see what happens.

OR it could be something else, notice how I'm just assuming shit.

I'm still learning how to work with Lua. I'm not sure how your image would work for some skills. It seems that you'd have set functions that my game would call if needed and implemented, but what would I do in this scenario:

Skill fires 2 projectiles, wants to do something different to each projectile when they collide. With the current way I'm doing it I'd create the projectile and subscribe to those events in lua (makeProjectile().subscribe(event, handleImportantProjectileFunc). With your suggestion the skill has no concept of projectiles or projectiles hitting so it doesn't know to call those functions.

Let me know if I misunderstood (I probably did).

>>121900968
Groovy jams. If you don't mind, what's the soundfont you're using for that bell-like percussion on Lethe?
>>
>>121901689
It does, the scripts will know of all exposed functions since you'll first push the functions like makeProjectile() into the global scope, then load the scripts afterwards. The difference being that instead of loading a buffer on the fly and executing it, instead you load it once at the start and then execute the bytecode.

Making a fps horrogame, trying to not make it a boring walking simulator so it will include simple combat like shoving enemies away or attacking them with some kind of close combat weapon in case you can't run away. silent hill 3 and 2 were fucking amazing horror games, and they had guns but very limited ammunition, meaning you could kill SOME enemies but not all of them, and it added another layer of tension as you had to manage your ammunition or you were screwed. then you have amnesia and soma which didn't let you fight back and were excellent because you felt constantly vulnerable.

both work well, if you do them right. just the right balance between "i can just blast everything to kingdom come" and "if an enemy even looks at me i will die"

why not have a general purpose object that can take arguments for speed, initial path, rate of change of path, and then actual player/actor stuff like damage it does or what sprite to use

oh man, you could have it so guns work but enemies slowly take less damage from them as the game progresses. so the guns shit damage early game, and do virtually nothing as time goes on. give the player a crutch, and then slowly pull it out from under them. even better, you can have it so not using guns early lets you get used to sneaking around monsters, and then if you choose to just blaze through guns a-firin, you're left on your ass with no experience of avoiding the enemies which are now tearing your ass to pieces.

this isn't scary, it's just frustrating and dumb. either have guns or don't, or make it clear that guns are limited use items (you could do what actually decent games did about this: instead of having extra mags, just make it whole new guns with a full mag. having it be the whole gun makes it seem higher value and lets you know off the bat that you won't be finding many)

Okay? We never said those games didn't have framerate dependent mechanics. In fact a lot of old games do have logic tied to framerate. That doesn't make it any better. It's still a bad thing to do. This is a gamedev thread, we can talk about gamedev topics.

I'm not even trying to say don't buy FO4 because of this. I'll be buying it myself next month.

theres a beatemup i played called phantom breaker battle grounds that has some fighting game mechanics in it but i didnt really like it. in general i dont know much about fighting games and i dont like exploring different button combinations to see what does what so why would i add mechanics from that genre to my game

m8, I play fighters, and combos are pretty fun.
It's very easy, and requires no coding because they just appear and can't be coded, unless is some target combo.

so long as you record it I don't think it matters when it happens
I don't think you'll be able to knock out all 40 games in a session or two anyways so
>>
>>121906334
All you need is to add a throw attack, or some attack that will stun an enemy for a significant amount of time. Make sure every attack has some hitstun. Then let players create their own combos.
For example throw an enemy, they're on the ground for a second, pull out the bow, shoot em. That's a combo, you didn't need to add any special code to make that combo work.

how do I make a for loop that waits some time between loops without sleeping the computer?

>>
>>121906578
He's talking about emergent combos based on combining moves linked with different inputs as opposed to "xxy quarter circle z" stuff, but if emergent combos are what he considers "fighting game combos" then the guy's game probably already includes them or at least ultimately will.

on an unrelated not i wondered in anyone here had any experience with making online multiplayer games with unity? i realise now that ive bitten off more than i can chew making a massive game all by myself and im almost out of money while being no where near finished

Anyways i had a really good idea for an online multiplayer game, with maybe 4 against 4 using the same mechanics ive been working on and wondered what was the best way to go about it, is http://itch.io any good? should i just host it myself, how much would it cost to host, any advice would be pretty dandy

Not really, with every general you have a bunch of idiots that get extremely autismal over the OP image so they'll force early threads just to satisfy their autism (most notable offenders are usually weebs).
