If you're smart about it it can be really big. Your art is good enough that showing it off a lot (not the sex parts) will get you tons of people hyped for it. If the game is particularly good at doing some specific thing that your initial audience would like (the ones who are in it for the porn) you can try to pull an Undertale where you have a small but rabid fanbase at the start that sings your game's praises to everyone else.

read some architecture and urban planning books/articles. level design is largely about managing traffic flow of the player(s), enemies and obstacles. many of the same rules will apply. A mark of a good level is that you should be able to go from any point to any other point without stopping for unduly long amounts of time. Y'know, just like in real world buildings and roadways and such. Other specifics depend on your genre i'm 99% sure you're doing pixelshit platforming tho but in general you want to have a good flow unless there's a specific challenge at hand that requires stopping, like an enemy to defeat or a puzzle to solve.

My current system is 1v1, but I'm going to expand it and I guess I'll actually finish making this game for the most part.

Now I'm allowing for a total of 8 characters, though only 4 to a party, the battles are going to be randomly generated, though every 5th battle utilizes a pre-built combat unit, though it's still randomly determined which you'll fight against

Essentially it's just another rougelike, may make a GUI version eventually


But really I think I'll just rewrite the thing, I'm only 400 lines in and a majority I can copy and paste, it's just that all of the old functions were only built for one character so you could basically choose Attack, Info, Quit Game

now I have to allow for
Set Party
Choose Turn Order(might just use initiative)
Choose Who's Attacking
Choose what type of attack
Choose what Target
repeat until battle is over

much more complex

I also have to redo the shop for choosing which character something you buy goes on, not sure if I'll just make it a global unlock system of make it so you have to buy each item/spell per unit, global is probably better so it's simpler

The controls in this game are awful.
Running should be shift and crouching control.
As you use WASD to move, why Z/X is attack? It's really fucking hard to press those to attack while using WASD to move. Why jump is Q and not space? Side step controls doesnt make sense. Make them Q and E.

Awesome. There are very few games that do this and I find them really fun.

Years ago I played a BYOND game which was a direct port of FF4 in multiplayer. One player controlled the movement of the party except when you entered towns where you'd split up. When you encountered a fight each player would be in control of their own character.

When I try to open the .exe, the windows window freezes with the cursor on the loading windows icon. It opens 3 processes with the name of the game in them, the game itself never starts.

Here we go:

First post on AGDG in fucking years, but as I'm about to be fired/quit (whatever comes first in the next month, just want a Christmas paycheque before telling them to stuff it) from my wageslave life. I decided I'm going to NEET it up for a few months and reconnect with my love of programming.

So, less of the backstory shit, the actual point:

Going to try and make a 2D fighter with a VN wrapper based around the FGC over the years rather than a bullshit story to explain why everyone is fightan. Got a good grasp on the fundamentals of programming in a fair few languages, and with that in mind, recommend me an engine.

Looking for something lightweight as I'm programming on a potato. So stuff like UE and Unity aren't an option.

wondering if I should continue, is their a place for another card game? I wanted to make something reminiscent of Pokemon: TCG for the gameboy.

Honestly I feel actually mildly appreciated at work. Honestly, card games are dumb to try to develop mostly because of printing and distribution. There's a big startup cost.

If you're willing to make it more of a "deck-building board game" like netrunner and some euro board games, it might be doable through some of those self-publishing services for trad games, but still. It's harder than vidya just by grace of having physical assets to distribute.

I don't like hearthstone cause deck building is the only strategy involved. Other than that,, it's just about playing the best cards your hand allows.

In this game, you'd only be able to play 2 monsters on the field. You can't just spam monsters on the field with no whim. Also, monsters need energy to attack so attaching the right energy to the right monsters will be important too. Still early though, so gameplay balancing hasn't really been achieved yet. Those are my plans though.

I need like 6 sets of thrusters each with a counter-set, so 12 sets, and at least 4 thrusters per set. And since some sets could potentially share thrusters, like pitch up and translate down, I need to find some way to keep track of which thrusters are activated based on some overlap of all sets. And I also need to make sure they aren't double activated since that actually changes the handling. full downward thrust and full pitchup thrust adds up to more than the individual thrusters are capable of.

I also can't figure out how I would simulate vectored thrust since that also changes the handling.

I ended up throwing out everything in that pack but the textures. The effect has 4 components. One shoots out the actual fire particles, one shoots out sparks, one shoots out a red glow, and finally there's a point light. The fire particles shift from blue to orange to red and get smaller as they travel.

Probably a waste of money, but it taught me how to do proper fire particles myself.

how would you design a game where metaphorically, its about getting through depression?

im thinking some dark silhouette enemies who won't kill you, just drag you down. you fall down into a deep pit, and its these dark tunnels with light, but u get to the light and its more dark tunnels. probably mind bending puzzles you have to solve..

How it currently is, fire looks too dark, air looks too metallic, earth looks too muddy, emerald looks too grassy, and amethyst would probably be better with higher contrast between the shades of purple.

Fire is a little too blood for my taste, but that's just me.
Air is kind of grey and boring, just a bit more saturation should fix it.
Earth could be browner.
And silver should be whiter.

You definitely have a good start, there's no need to change it radically, there's only really small adjustments left to be made.

Well, there are basic rules for games where combat takes place on the actual level, like creating a sense of flow and having a good ratio of corridors to courtyards, but those rules won't exactly transfer over to games where combat essentially occurs in an alternate dimension. I'm just wondering if there's more to level design in the latter scenario than is currently presented.

Feedback for the creator of Aethyr:

The first part with pigs and crows is fine but the first dungeon is still a big jump in difficulty. The enemies have really short anticipation frames and they attack too often (no cooldown in their attacks apparently). On top of that I'd advise again against making the first dungeon have lighting. Even with a torch it makes things harder than they need to be and the player needs to learn how to get going with the game instead of having difficulties seeing enemies.

The jump sections are too hard too. Jumping has to be extremely well performed and I dunno, doesn't make sense to me that it'd have to be this hard.

The tutorial still has problems where people won't be able to tell what they have to do next. Some signs have way too much information at once and some signs are missing information on what the player has to do.

Finally, gamepad controls are a bit off. Inventory being dpad UP doesn't make sense. It should be select or start. The dpad should be enabled for movement. Some people don't like using the stick for movement and you should provide both options for people.

Go look at how many followers Aerannis dev has on tumblr/Twitter. Multiply that by 10 which is probably a reasonable number to achieve for an indie dev and he'd have 10 times more people initially looking at his game and sharing it with other people. It's impossible to tell what's going to be popular in terms of what's going to go big like Undertale, but it isn't impossible to build an audience over time and convert a percentage of that audience into buyers when you release. It's especially not impossible to convert into a bigger number of sales than Aerannis dev had.
