I would caution anyone, in any circumstance, from going to for-profit universities. They'll lure you in with the promise of a good job and approve you for loans at ridiculous rates while you're incapacitated with the promise of your dream career.
Trust me, if you're going to get an art degree, the only important thing is your portfolio. A graduate from Harvard with a shit portfolio will only be a Harvard graduate. You should go to the cheapest school that meets your needs, and I promise neither of these are it.
Full disclosure, I do game dev as a hobby, my career is in aviation. But a friend of mind went to for-profit schools that saddled him up with (no joke) $200,000 of student loans and he has the same job I do. I went to a state university and owe the school nothing after scholarships. Even without those scholarships, I would only be out about $40,000. The average endebtedness for my university is $22,000, so about 1/10 my friend.
TL;DR stay away from for-profit schools.

Art style question

Which of these do you guys prefer? Assume the primary color would change depending on whether an object is enemy/friendly/etc and there was a bit more detail.

I'm trying to work out a visual style for my game and since I'm a crappy artist it's either something like this or pixel art so I'm trying to go for a more interesting look.

So, why does pinging my localhost return 17?
shouldn't it be like 1ms or something like that if the packet isn't actually leaving my machine?
>>
>>121564485
Well I posted my failed game tether 3d on steam, and people ripped it to shreds, then some british guy Jim Sterling, who makes fun of bad steam games, made a video about it and then I got a bunch of yes votes. My goal is to just wait it out and see if I can get it on steam, if not it'll be available on other platforms, and I'll just keep it out there for download for as long as the stores will have it.

>>
>>121563943

what happened to the assless chaps?
>>
>>121564823
No, and No.

The reason your ping is >1ms is probably related to the method you're using to calculate the ping. If the thread terminates before getting the result of the ping then necessarily the lowest ping it could have is related to how quickly the main loop cycles. 120hz (120 cycles per second) is an 8.6ms ping

You are messing with shit out of your comprehension.

FPS = Frames per Second = The Rate at which a single graphical frame is rendered by your video card.

Tick Rate = How often your main loop cycles = Every time the code of the server iterates through its execution thread and starts back from the top.

Depending on the engine these may or may not be entirely unrelated things, but at the very least they are conceptually different.

As another derail from the main game I got an idea:

Pic related. 2-player turn-based game. Center is the game grid, left and right - player statuses. The goal is for the left player (always starts first) to get to the right side or for the right player - to stop him (killing the opposing player works too). Every turn you can do 1 action - explore or move. Exploring reveals the targeted tile next to you without moving, while moving goes straight to it without knowledge of what is there. Moving into the enemy wins you the game.

Additionally, the tiles can contain items which would have an effect on how you move/state of the board - you would trigger them by stepping on their tile, which is why moving onto one without first exploring might have an impact on your success.

I'll probably try and make a prototype with an AI and see if it's any fun, and if so, probably integrate it into the main game. Until then, any thoughts?

Greetings All,

We wanted to take the time to explain the situation our studio is in right now and why the newest patch has taken so long.

So after the launch of AGDG we continued support for as long as we could (about three months) but it soon became clear that the amount of revenue generated by the game and the cost we had incurred during development was not going to be able to keep us working on it. We got it fixed up as best we could then shifted focus to some smaller mobile projects (and I got a part time job) and that is what we have been doing for the last few months.

It has been a slow process, but we have gathered up a new team and just launched a Kickstarter for a new project: DPT. The goal of this project is to provide a way to hire on the studio staff full time to work on ALL our projects, including AGDG.

I wanted to get the patch out before launch but got hung up on nearly a week of Unity 5 upgrade issues and had to shift focus to helping the team with the kickstarter. Now that it has launched, I will be using the next few weeks to finally try and get this patch done.

Regardless of Kickstarter success, we should now be in a position to offer some more support on our games.

Thank you for your support and understanding

I'm experimenting with the colors a tad, trying not to use solid 255,0,0s etc. to get a bit of a unique feel to it, I'll play with it some more.

I tried combining the two styles but they clash, which sucks because the outline style has a really nice energy feel to it, while the solid style has a more, well, solid feel. But the eye just doesn't like them in concert.

One nice thing about the outline style is I can have the outside be a different tone to the inside (note the orange one here, the outline is orange but the inside is actually red, which gives it a unique look)

I think I'll end up going with outline style.

Yeah, the one I saw was a poorly documented and clearly foreign, the guy knew stuff but it was just sloppy. The problem is I am not that good at Unity and game dev yet. All I know is that I need to raycast as in the pic I mocked up, and use multiply blending somehow (I'm mostly concerned with how you'd "darken" things like sprites and the background properly, as far as the concept goes). I think I basically just need to spend a lot of time with it to learn all the useful syntax in Unity which sucks.
>>
>>121568165
Oh, neat. This is gonna sound stupid, as I am new, but by moonwalk animations you mean animations with origin at (0,0,0), right?

What's a .fbx? By needed arrangements, what do you mean?

Thank you though, this was a good starting place. Helped me calm down.

fbx is a file extension you can export from your 3d software it can export the mesh plus the skeleton and all of your animations in one file which is very convenient

in marketing there's a group of early adopters you call your "evangelists" - Toby Fox's involvement with Homestuck gives him not only a leg up on a fanbase, but a group of fans who rabidly promote him for being tangentially related to something they're obsessed with, on top of it being a detail oriented game that panders to a very specific demographic.
There is no chance of you reproducing its success by following its formula.

I do believe the emotional engagement people have it's that the monsters aren't just random minions but they're give at least basic personalities.

The last point I do believe is what makes people so invested into it, specially the genocide run.

It's not a secret, most good art that is popular have something emotional people can feel.

Because it did EVERYTHING right.
It might be a hard concept to grasp, but it did just that.
The flawed seams is only something you see towards the endgame, they are minor, and if you played it for that long; you are hooked enough to think any roadblock its a fun challenge.

The bad things about it(ROM hacking masturbation), also stays limited to something obscure, unlike games like Axiom Verge where it wants to masturbate over it, but its not well enough designed to do that.
>>
>>121571393
what makes human is a bunch of stuff, ethics, art, aesthetics, morals, politics, fun, emotions, rationality.

>sort of greater purpose
that's called motivation bro, and it's a good tool for moving your players to finish your game or keep playing.

There's usually diferent types of players, there's some who want to kill and destroy, others love competition, other loves exploration and inmersion and others love the social aspect and comunity building.

Good games offer something vastly diferent for each type of player.

There's also other storytelling tools you can use such as protecting others, being the chosen one, tridimentional characters, NPC having subplots, interesting worldbuilding, conflicted feeling toward ambiguos NPC, betrayal, admiration.

There's also common tropes you can use, and even bittersweet endings can be explained by having the MC acomplish his character arc but losing his story goal.

Storytelling is extremelly important for giving an emotional experience most players would want.

I'm sure the undertale guy had enough experience making homestuck as to create something special again.

>>121571402

I could see even in the tutorial it was something special.

Well i had zero time for progress in the last 4 days due to school crap, but i want to get at least some progress today.
I added different anims for undrawing the bow. If the string is drawn she will release it slowly down and if the bow is not drawn (after being fired for ex.) it goes directly into idle.
It's not perfect, there are some aesthetic imperfections, but i am not going for perfection so good enough.

Why do you guys shitpost so much? It's gotten to the point where like half of you just ironically shitpost knowing that it's just shitposting. People posting are shitposting, people reading are shitreading. Nobody is taking it seriously--you're all just posting "le ironic" posts that mean nothing. And on top of that none of you even develop games. What the fuck? Like three people here are working on games that are even fun, and one fo them is that shitty unity rocket flappy bird 3d thing.

Again, you don't seem to understand how this works. On an anonymous imageboard you're not going to successfully shame anyone. You already seem to know that by saying that public shaming won't work. But on top of that, you seem to not understand that the type of person who shitposts on this thread will also not feel bad about someone pointing it out to them. Your attempt at making them feel bad will only give them more strength to shitpost harder. They feed on people like you who get upset at them. Is this your first time on this website? Do you not understand how this works? All you have to do is ignore them.

I haven't played the game but I know about it, and let's be fair, the dev DID make everything himself. That much you have to admit makes it pretty impressive, that he made everything by himself and actually finished it.

An 'asset-store quality game' is the latest buzzmeme some guy is using to describe every game made with Unity or UE4
>>
>>121586394
I only have a rough draft about it:
>AI phase goes through all AI units in the field stored in a list one by one
>each AI unit refreshes a priority queue with its current threats (example: previous turn there wasn't a player unit nearby, so it defaulted to moving to its nearest unit, this turn it checks again if player units are in range and picks the lowest health / lowest defense player unit and attacks it)
>each unit gets a target node to move towards, based on the Mission objectives to default it's behavior
>IF no node is required for mission objectives, just pick the nearest player unit and move-attack towards it

First though, I'm just gonna do a randomized check in a switch between "Attack Nearest" or "Move Towards Objective Node" so I can work in the logic of those actions.

Can I see your game anon?
>>
>>121586662
>there's nothing else like it currently on the market.
I'd agree if you say that it got popular because of that.

Because don't get me wrong, I tried the game, and even though it's not bad there are clearly issues with it.
It felt like one of those games that try to add realistic things but only to annoy you rather than be a challenge, while also keeping some things unrealistic for "muh balance". Either go one way or another.

>I'd agree if you say that it got popular because of that.
It was Sim City but in medieval times. Everybody loves Sim City, everybody loves medieval games. Yes, that is the exact reason it got popular. It was a gap in the market that nobody else filled before or has since tried to fill.

The modern, casual version of Sim City maybe. Real sim city had way more depth and complexity than Banished. Using default sounds is like using filters from photoshop but not changing any of the default values
People who dont know any better will be impressed, but people who have more experience will call you out for it

Lens flares can look cool, but if you use the default one, its going to trigger people
>>
>>121590515
>not him but what constitutes mixing a track?
Mixing a track basically means making all the various instruments and sounds of a track fit together and sound good. Different instruments and sounds cover a broad range of the frequency spectrum, and mixing means adjusting those frequencies to make sure everything can be heard clearly (or not clearly!). It's basically like doing the line-art over a sketch, you make the initial idea more defined.

After mixing there's mastering, which is a whole other topic altogether.
>>
>>121590706
I think you have to own a (paid) steam game to have the right kind of account to take advantage of features like that. I think even shit like trading cards and items are locked out if you only have f2p stuff or nothing at all

Granted, you could just buy 100 copies of some 99 cent gamemaker title for 100 valid accounts, so maybe the system isnt perfect

>>
>>
>>121588281
p much this.
>>
>>121590891
>or (forgot the name) where you limit a track volume to make it sound louder.
That's mastering, that's a different process. Mixing means deciding what parts of the frequency are heard at what point. Like a song might have an intro that's only drums, so you make the drums sound as big and loud and possible, but once the rest of the instruments come in you pull back the drums to make room for all the other sounds.
>>
>>121588958

C#/Unity will let you start doing more faster, and C# is an easy language to learn.

The tools for python are comparatively lower level, with the possible exception of ren'py.

The most important thing is to just start doing ~something~, though. Most of the skills you learn will be transferable.

You know, of all artists, musicians are usually the ones most open to new tools, sounds, plugins, etc. If somebody's toolset seems "uninspired", that usually means that their tools are basically industry standards. I don't know of any musician who just sits on their gear / plugins / whatevers and never looks around for new, exciting sounds. If it works, it works.

Mastering usually refers to taking all the mixes of an album or sounds of a movie and making sure they're all at the same volume. In addition to the volume, mastering ads things like Overtone Exciters and additional multiband compression to make the songs really shine. If mixing is building the shelf, think of mastering as polishing it.
The mix and master are usually done by two different people or studios, and it's important because a good mastering engineer has a completely different focus than a good recording or mixing engineer. Sometimes the guy that does the mix also masters it, but it's rarely as good as if some fresh ears had a chance to do it.

>>
>>121591786
It depends, if you have a strong artistic idea in mind then you can complete the game before getting artists if you want, however sometimes art can help drive gameplay or story so really when you start needing it to see your game

How to deal with floating point inaccuracy in absurdly huge environments? I'm using a logarithmic depth buffer to render a solar system in realistic scale, but the planets look jerky as they move in their orbits. The effect is especially bad when I have a tiny shuttle only 10 meters in length that jumps around erratically unless very close to the sun which is located at coordinates (0,0,0).

I'm already using double precision floats for planet, ship, etc. positions, but the rendering library uses single precision matrices. Is changing everything to double precision the way to go or is there a workaround?

Pic not my game, but related: It's Elite II, which had full scale planetary systems in 1993.

This. Giant companies can pull off pandering bullshit pretty well because they've got it down to a science and they can pull out thousands of dollars in "oh shit, we've got to buy a botnet and spam our way up to the #10 spot before this game falls any lower" money.

Indie + honest = at least you've got yourself an honest game and you can probably make money if it's a good game
indie + pandering = failure and all you've got at the end of it is shame and disappointment

It's gonna be 3D is the issue.

I have enough programming experience that I am fairly confident I'm not biting off more than I personally can chew. But the art may be a problem.

Center rendering origin around camera, use high precision for actual logic?
>>
hey guys i made a simple bash script to make webums easier for myself, do any of you want a copy?
>>
>>121592371
You need a fixed-point system, which can be implemented as something like:

struct Fixed {
..int whole;
..float fraction;
};

In order to render, you convert from Fixed to float using a point of reference (the camera's position).

All artists I've found were a result of me making a game with stolen art assets first. Anyone who isn't a retard can understand that you're just a programmer and they'll assess your skills as a programmer. But at the same time no one will give attention to a game that looks like absolute shit.

Can run on any toaster
Is a complete package of a game (no early access, no DLC)
Had a solid demo that sold the game concept well and was fun in its own right (unlike Indivisible) and asked for barely anything for the KS
Has several gimmicks/mechanics ("The friendly RPG where nobody has to die" pacifism, Bullet Hell battles instead of standard JRPG, Meta stuff) that get people talking and make the game immediately understandable.
Hits a good balance between not being an overlong RPG/open world game (like every other AAA game out right now), nor a 1-2 hour narrated walking simulator/story game (like beginner's guide or life is strange)

It's genuinely a sad thing that your posts aren't all deleted. The first 1/8th of this thread is a horrendous trainwreck with your name written all over it. You've legitimately upset people ITT it seems. Congratulations.
>>
>>121602046
This so much.
People who don't use capital letters tend to be the biggest shitters on 4chan, and I disregard their opinion immidiately.
>>
>>121603643
are you implying that it will take off after it leaves early access, or are you saying that it failed because it started off as early access and ti will never get better?

early access games are always shit and never go anywhere with very few exceptions

That's fucking cold.

it's like you're arguing about whether or not comments in code should start with capital letters and end with periods

/agdg/ is the only place outside of /r9k/ and /x/ that i consistently see posts made by people with genuine mental illnesss on 4chan

it's not even this bad on /pol/

I don't understand. Are you implying it's okay to be a shitposter here because other boards are insane?

No, it's more like recognizing a pattern in shitposting and general asshattery.
>>
>>121604421
I didn't imply anything of the sort. This general is always full of fucking retards and genuinely mentally ill people. That's all I'm saying. It's kind of shocking to me.
>>
>>121604262

God damn AGDG, my Rigidbody keeps bouncing into objects. It clips into it for a second before being knocked out of the other object's Rigidbody.

Basically, 1 cube stands still, 1 cube rams into it. The ramming cube will clip into the still cube before it adjusts to the outside.

Any idea how to fix this? It's obnoxious as fuck. I thought I had it fixed, but it popped back up.
>>
>>121604558
I see. The gravity of shitposting here does imply genuine mental illness, I agree. That and crossboard stalking and other things, this isn't normal behavior even by 4chan standards. It is disturbing and sad but at least some devs still post progress.
>>
>>121604831
yet 90% of the thread is shitposting, 9% is casual conversation, and 1% is gamedev
>>
>>121604932

boy does that show the quality over quantity meme in action
>>
>>121605057
I've obviously tried that
>>
>>121605019
The shitposters have genuine mental problems and have nothing else to do with their day, so yes, even if there are only one or two of them they manage to post 5x as much as everyone else. Either way, this meta discussion about shitposting never helps.
>>
>>121605081
progress triggers anime "engine" "devs" so it's frowned upon, welcome to agdg in 2015
>>121604932
check your update loop and give priority to collision detection
>>
>>121605210
the code for physics is in fixed update right?
if that doesnt help edit > project settings >time
if that doesnt help try making your objects way bigger
if that doesnt help make your own engine family

How do you, personally, decide if your game is appropriately difficult?

Do you want to make a game that is hard even if you are good at the game and fuck over casuals, or do a 'hard' game that anyone can beat?
>>
There is literally nothing wrong with shitposting
>>
>How do you, personally, decide if your game is appropriately difficult?
Get people who are good at videogames, to play it
Otherwise you run the risk of adding "artificial difficulty"
>>
>>121604932

Are these high-speed collisions or low speed ones?

Are you moving via forces?

Are you interpolating or extrapolating transform position?
>>
>>121605681
There was a totalbiscuit video talking about it, basically it depends of your game and its theme. Can't really answer this question and you shouldn't rely on your own game experience obviously.
>>121605997
On your deathbed you might regret wasting years of your life shitposting on internet forums.
>>
>Get people who are good at videogames, to play it

thanks
>>
>>121605681
add normal and hard modes
>>
>>121605681
If it's "hard" when you are good at it, it's tedious and annoying more than hard. "Good" implies you know what to expect and how to deal with that, if you do then you can only lose by making unlikely mistakes or the sequence dragging on for long enough to wear you out, which isn't fun.
>>
>>121606119
artificial difficulty is not real.

Can somebody test this to make sure it runs?

I try my best to do an objective analysis of my design before anything else.
Then I playtest in different ways; remapped keyboard, inverted mouse, controller upside down, monitor upside down and the likes, then do approximations.
And then I try to find people to play it, like a friend or my grandma, note down their experiences, and re-think my design or tweak whatever variables.

I repeat that process however many times neccessary (usually 2), and it should work.

Solution was to lower the timestep to .01 instead of .02. Not a perfect solution, but much better.

It was literally 1 block falling onto another block default setup continuous discrete interpolate
>>
>>121606112
Nah, I'm ready for death :)
>>
>>121606550
It runs fine and pretty good too, don't like the "hold to run" though.
>>
>>121607119

If you set the timestep to 0.166667 it should match with the displayed framerate, which is what I usually do.

Might be placebo but apparently something stuttering who knows.
>>
How do you get the big Let's Players to review your game? Half of the stuff they play is total shit, so where do they pull from? What about people like tb who review some pretty obscure games from time to time?
>>
>>121607417
Money, you see those smallish youtubers reviewing indie games? Even them ask for money, not a lot but around 90-200$ for a video is what they replied to me.
>>
>>121607417
Taking direct contact is probably your best bet.
>>
>>121607694
>pay someone a ton of money to review your game

I just realized I overengineered what I am currently working on and it's making it annoying to deal with.

I wanted to have my character controller be able to swap parts in and out, but it's just making things difficult to actual work with. Especially when I could just have all the different controllers be states I could swap between using inside the controller itself.

my idea was that I could have a swimming controller be swapped in when in water, then a regular one outside of water. Now I think I'll just have them both on it and have a switch statement if needed when going in and out of water
>>
I'm currently reading through "Homo Ludens" by Huizinga. Pretty interesting stuff, trying to explain the characteristics of play, its functions as it associates to culture (as opposed to science), etc. Getting at what is good play, is my objective in reading it.

Only just started. Anyone else read it?

mixed poorly, things clash and 'pop' together sometimes when instruments are too loud. drums are way too loud the whole time and kind of don't really fit.

otherwise not bad for a beginner and/or dev music
