Thanks anon. How realistic the hacking will be will depend, for the most part no, totally unrealistic, like in this webm to crack the encryption on an airport wifi you have to enter the letter that flash green. On the other hand, one of the missions is to acquire a copy of an unreleased song so a pirate can upload it, and the solution is to go to the music portal site, initiate the buying process for a different song, then change the song ID in the browser parameters to point to the one you're trying to get. Another solution is to visit the musicians homepage and look at how he stores his files, and infer from the links where the song you want might be. Or, since his webserver allows it, you can access his /music directory and see all the files listed, even though they're not available from the main page. Some people would argue that isn't hacking, and I agree, so its more like a computer puzzle solving game I guess

To be honest, I just don't think games like yours get much attention. It looks really bland and uninspired. I played it last demo day and It just wasn't that great either.

You obviously know what I'm doing here, so if you want to make assets (just props like you mention) I will either use them or modify them to they fit my game. Its gonna be an RPG style game, with a medieval type setting. The environments are mostly gonna be procedurally generated (like the cave in webm related), except for things like towns where the player can go to re-supply/find new quests. Prefer low poly. Anyone else that wants to help can do so as well on their own free time for fun. I'll be putting out a demo tomorrow/sunday where you can walk around the cave and kill skele's to see if people are interested in what I have so far.

Because you had access to all the HL2 models you could make anything from sci-fi to country house without having to make any of your own meshes or textures, as opposed to UE3 at the time which was all alium space ship.

characters tho, you look at them from up close and constantly, you have cloth physics on them and so on, you need more polys than an empty map (that doesn't even have props yet.

bumps, speculars and diffuse can give any flat surface a ton of detail

use the secondary map feature most engine have and you can make even tiled maps look good.

Yeah, can't deny normalmaps are the most important maps if it comes to detail. Whoever invented bump/normalmaps is a hero. I think that shader in the pic above is a diffuse/spec one, though nowadays you also need some other important maps, thanks to pbr, maps for microsurface/fresnel etc also play a huge role for lighting now.

You can find or write pretty much every shader in Unity though. UE4 has a useful shaders right out of the box of course, but you can have about the same amount of graphics quality in Unity if you know what you are doing.

I have not, because it's bullshit. Undertale looks like complete ass, LISA is a literal RPG maker game, and both have been huge financial successes even amidst the so-called "indiepocalypse" because they were good AND unique. All that matters is if the game is good or not, and if it offers something that people can't get elsewhere.

There was this article floating around from these guys that made Airscape, saying that their game failed even though it was good, and how making a good game isn't enough "anymore", and how the market has changed; but looking at it it's painfully obvious why it failed: It was the same shit as 90000 other indie games, a fucking platformer with a gimmick. It had an inconsistent and ugly art style, had nothing of emotional value to draw the player in, and it was just "okay". Just "okay" indie games have never sold well, at least not in this century.

Just because ten thousand people saw Indie Game the Movie and started making games and 9999 of those people failed at becoming millionaires with their first hit doesn't mean there's an "indiepocalypse".

I liked it, but it definitely gave a lot of people (including myself, I hate to admit) the wrong idea about the games industry, making a lot of people think it was easy to make money and be successful in.
Everybody that saw it wanted to be the next Phil Fish or Team Meat and one thing the movie unfortunately doesn't get across that well is all the years and years and years of work and trial and error and failing and falling on their face that the guys in the movie had to go through to get to where they were.
As it stands, calling it "indie game the movie" is a bit of a lie because none of those games were truly Indie, they all were published by Microsoft - the development teams were just all very small and didn't have big budgets, but they were all established developers that had won prizes at the IGF and who had enough success beforehand to get publishing deals with MS.
I personally think it's worth watching, if only to see what a fucking nutball Phil Fish is, but I think the most important thing to take from it is that what you are watching is the success stories of a handful of people who worked their asses off and got very lucky, and that even if you work as hard and for as long as they did, success like theirs is never going to be guaranteed.

People don't throw massive amounts of $$$$$ to commission Studio F.O.W. to make Elizabeth pr0ns years after Bioshock Infinite has died because she's a forgettable character. No, she made a lasting impression on players, and she didn't have to run around in bikini armor to do it. Elizabeth is for marrying, not just for fapping.

A lot. They're imperfect and have dirt and grime, but also have minor details that lets the eyes wander and wonder. With 3D, you can use tiles and be a little lazy, but you lose the charm of a fantastic world if you copy pasta too much.

Pre-rendered backgrounds are beautiful, but real-time 3D stuff can be just as beautiful if you do it right. Don't half ass it like Oddworld New n Tasty. They replaced the grimy and morbid world with clean tech and lights.

If you've played the game, there are some areas where there can be hundreds of physics objects you can pick up and throw around. But surely they can't be computing physics while you are far away from them?
