Remember that comic strip which shows an space engineer trying to leave through a door, but then getting smashed by lag?

They actually fixed that, you now lock onto whatever grid you stand on. Shit can then spasm and lag all over the place, from inside you can´t tell.

Okay, so, it appears if there IS a block in front of your cockpit, you CANNOT place anything, because LoS. If LoS is uninterrupted, for whatever reason (such as an open frame panel, see webm related), you can place blocks.

In other words, I need to ditch the folding cockpit (RIP) and rebuild a new cockpit that uses the same dimensions, but also open frames then I can place blocks with my current utility ship(s).

Are tail planes uncontrollable via a complex controller?

I am trying to use them to turn my airship but the complex controller setup for them just has positive and negative which doesnt make sense since they are a rudder and elevator combined.

90% of AI torpedoes don't seem to have ballast so you won't need to worry

Subs are essentially invincible

To make them just use tonnes of hydrofoils around the centre of mass (a bit forward) and use control blocks to set them to -45 if above 50m and +45 if below 50m

Then put some on the front and set them to -45 if pitch is above 0 and +45 is pitch is below 0

Then spam a bunch of jet stabilisers, but make sure they're facing out from the middle or they'll flip you

Pretty sure everything you can control is controllable via a complex controller. You just need to tell your thruster/spinblocks/rudders/whatnot how to respond to various inputs.

Replaced the balance custom jet with some hydrofoils on the front and back to apply torque and keep me level, added a shitty torpedo bulge near my ammo stores and engine.

The two front turrets are timed flak, no head. The big one behind those is .5m HE shells like the anon with the beautiful bewts in the last thread recommended. Then there's the sabot cannon just fore of the bridge, and an inertial fuzed frag in the rear in case something has shields. Just realized there are no warheads aside from the sabot cannon, huh.

The missiles up top (3 are 4 long, 2 5 long) all have different flight profiles (# of fins, IR cameras, target guidance, etc) so as to increase the odds of a hit on an erratic target.

I ended up making two small rear engine props for turning.

When the game offers me blocks a quarter of the size of the current ones to be used on any ship, I'll use vanilla. Until then I really don't feel like having simple turrets the size of a ship, especially when the game is optimized like ass and the pistons will clang everything apart.

Without hitscan you wouldn't be able to snipe away components from long range, wings on aircraft would be safer since one would have to lead ones shots. And in long range the smg would have even more problems since the projectile might not reach the target before it moves. So smgs would only come into their own in mid to close range battles.

Placing more cannons pointing backwards on the middle and rear engines would be useless because the steam coming from the front would kill them, and cannons pointing up to give more power to the cogs would clip through the ground unless I made the whole thing taller

I think this is as far as this thing is gonna go without some big changes to its design. 1360 kph with modded wheels and 740 with all vanilla blocks is pretty good anyway

I can make way better subs then I can ships or planes.
I love FTD but whenever I play it I leave dissatisfied because I spend 8 hours on a ship just for it to be shit when fighting the AI.
The best ships I have made are a gauss sub which absolutely wrecks everything.

Then a missile pod turret that is only 12x5, has just enough buoyancy to float 30 feet underwater and processes its own resources as well as have two shields on top for protection.
Best part is they are under 10000RP and 6 of them can wreck two coffin nails.

So I just found out its really easy to make a reaction wheel stabiliser with a few lines of LUA and a precision spin block.

Seems way WAY more powerful than the jet stabiliser, cheap as fuck too.

nosegun fires a 0.5x1 casing+HE shell on a beltloader which desu, is far far better than I expected it to be. velocity is low, but at altitude it's still very dangerous to OW ships. (I should remake this as a turret later)

just before the huge prop in the middle is the ammo controller for the 4 AA type guns. These do good accurate damage a block at a time at a high rate.

rear prop is on ACB's

the wheel up top is controlled by LUA (can upload the code though if interested, its really really basic). It could take up way less volume, I never built the vessel with it in mind.

The reason for the need to have the stabilisers is I figured I could make heli airships much tougher by simply moving the spinner out of fire. So the dedicated spinner is upside down, losing the magic self righting capacity but gaining huge boost to survivability. I can have the belly blown open and still be flying.

Truth is though with a belt loader, this can reload in about a second. Probably takes a bit over a minute to load the belt. Has about 30+ shots in the belt. Cannon is 0.11 accuracy at its current length.

So i'm building my first really really big ship (a little over 500 m long) and I took heavy inspration from the gladiator class star destroyer but I feel 'stuck' on what to add to it. I have several major rooms already done and slowly working on the command bridge but I'm not sure how to do it without making it look tall for the sake of being tall same for its width but I haven't added armor on it yet so a lot of shape is currently missing.

I'm aiming for it to be a self-supporting carrrier ship with a massive fighter bay on the front and one on each side. Brick picture related, and the current thruster settup in the back is a large WIP and will most likely be scrapped.

How in the hell do you kill a Pinacle? I've been putting this gunboat up against it for combat trials, but it always either ends in a stomp in favor of the Pinacle or a stupid "oh I'm sinking but I can still shoot missiles and repair!" slugfest. I also notice my shields blinking while my LAMS is firing, is there any way to prevent this?

This is my doorstop shaped ship, the one in the webm is laser based. All that empty space surrounding the laser is usually filled with wooden beams.
I also have a nucannon version of this ship, and uses most of that empty space to fit recoil absorbers

Normally what I do is I do the rooms I know I'm going to want, then I do the outside completely and fit it around the rooms.

Next, I add rooms I might want, backup generator rooms, maybe some neat other stuff, and carve out the insides accordingly.

A ship that large, though, and you're bound to have a ton of excess space. Just imagine a bunch of things you could roleplay (but won't) and then add them on anyways.

Just as I posted that, it scored its first actual legitimate kill on a Pinacle by... outranging it with missiles. I want this to be a real bastard to go up against though, so that's not good enough.
Engine problem is fixed, but now it seems like occasionally the Pinacle will score an insane hit that I don't even see on one of the turrets, completely blowing it out of the hull. Are any of the advanced cannon components highly explosive, so much so that shrapnel might set them off?

I'm an inside out builder. I build the rooms and interior first before moving on. Currently this version has 2 med bays, pilot lounge, two non-officer crew quarters, non-officer meal hall, a WIP loading dock for mining ships under neither, the windowed area in the front is a second command bridge, 2 rec rooms (large windowed area on the sides), two refinery rooms, two accembler rooms, the two large bordered out areas near the rear thrusters are officer quarters. i found one on the forum for you, just copy-paste, make sure you assign the correct complex controller inputs to the desired thrusters. I use this on basically all of my ships where roll is a thing that needs to be dealt with consistently, it works flawlessly as long as you have thrusters capable of doing the job. it should work on any craft as long as the H/K inputs are configured correctly, not just ships.

Target prioritization AI card.
AI attacks an enemy with the highest score.
Sliders control how much score enemy gets for specific properties, like block count making AI prefer large/small targets, altitude would make AI target flying/sea level/underwater enemies and so on.
By tweaking them you specify the priority targets for this AI.

For your specific problem you need to lower the range score so the farther the target the less score it gets.

man i fucking hate turrets, i'm an inch away from scrapping all of the goddamn shell parts and turret holes and just firing 300 vertical launch missiles, this is such a pain in the ass it's hard to even put it into words

i can put this turret higher than the lower one, so that it can overlap the barrel, but then that one can't turn all the way around because its barrel will intersect with this one even when it's elevated, as that's how the game calcs the collisions. it'd also hit the planned larger turret infront of it, so that's a no-go. i can put them side by side but then they fuck each others firing arcs, again.

i'd just replace all of the turrets with deck guns and broadside everything, but this thing doesn't exactly turn fast and i don't feel like spending 300k metal on a ship that can't deal with something that moves more than 15m/s perpendicular to it.

this thing fires 1-long missiles (safety fuze and 2 degree frag) into the box in front. When it rams into an enemy, the box is broken and the bajillion missiles that were fired during the approach are spilled over the enemy ship. Gets 50m/s max, but drops down periodically as it hits the water. Probably 45m/s average.

Anyone have a ship that does better with it's new cannons than it would if it had missiles on it? It's kind of killing my desire to play, I've already raped the campaign with missile spam, I don't have any real drive to keep doing that. I'd like to use the new cannons but they're just so incredibly explosive and shitty to try to use.
The 3way gauge splitter thing is a headache, they fire insanely slow, and it's too complicated to try to balance the math and make something that's actually efficient and doesn't reload too fast or too slow. The recoil they generate is absolutely insane, I can't get anything to fire a cannon above .25m gauge without flipping the ship, the apparent design here is to use 10+ 4m hydraulic recoil absorbers just to be able to fire the gun, but with that space alone I could put in 40 more missiles.

I just don't get it. They're a joke compared to custom cannons too, but those should be nerfed soon (or so Nick has said) so that's a moot comparison. I'm hoping there's buffs to reload speed and rack speed, reduced recoil and a 5 way gauge splitter coming. I don't really see any use for them otherwise.

Is there an accurate way for me to recreate planet gravity in SE without mods or planet scripts? Now that rotors and pistons are much more stable I'm picking up my automatic launch/landing project. Unfortunately half my old saves are corrupted.

Once you start getting the hang of it they're not so bad. I think part of it is that it's a little more complicated than other systems, and we're comparing new and unfamiliar with old and optimized. We all know how to make good missiles, optimal launcher arrangements, etc. There are people who are working out the same thing for nucannons (we got a high firerate .5m gauge here >>121495823).

In addition to the optimizing and exploring going on, missiles are going to get a massive nerf once localized resources hit, since they're so ammo-hungry.

Oh I know. I didn't make that rig specifically to shoot down the freighters, I just thought it would be fun to try. Its current setup is incapable of re-fire, the mechanism simply wont reset. I have a different version that uses pistons that can be fired as many times as you can get more ammo in it, but its significantly less powerful and can't hit the freighters.

I think the sandbox area is infinite. There's the playable map and beyond that there's a grey void endless in all directions.

You can also avoid the freeze point (which is located about 370-380 m above the playable area) because it only covers the area directly above the sandbox, so you can safely fly to whatever altitude you want. The objects in the map remain visible until 2000something m iirc.

I made a lot of upside-down sled bots. They all had ejector seats with a gun attached to the block the pilot seat was attached to.
I've a whole line of bots starting from a silly tower that has a bomber plane on top that detaches, back when SMGs had a range limit.
Then I had ones with lots of hull protecting the only overtiered plasma gun before medics.
Then with rails, light sleds to climb hills.
With teslas, plasma bots that also had teslas.

Nowadays, though, very few of the bots I've made in the past work. None of the interesting ones, anyway.

The only problem I've had with turrets thus far are the top rockets dinging the edges, and that's only if I'm moving above 20m/s. Once I set the ship's ownership entirely to me, they just refuse to shoot at anything that is under my ownership.

The real effort is going to making a fuctional bomb bay that autobuilds mass bombs

Both those games were my childhood and I'm still sad that they didn't make a third. Figured it be sorta cool to do some of the ships in FTD so next up is the Xylvanian frigate and then maybe the Tundran ships. Also pictured was the start of the battleship until I realized that it has a pre-dreadnought hull and I gave up.

Just host a multiplayer, the last map "Quest for Neter" is just campaign mode, except you can play it with someone else. Don't pick a save game, just start. You can save your campaign mode progress in multiplayer and presumably, load it back up next time by selecting it when you picked your map.

First things to add when FtD gets modding:

>Replace metal with different metals of varying stats

More ambitious stuff:

Originally, lasers and railguns were intended to fill that role. Resource and power intensive enough to not be viable until late game, at which point they're such an improvement over standard weapons you need them to compete. Space fleets trading laser and railgun fire was probably even the original intention. THe word 'plasma' has been used by the devs when talking about 'T2' weapons before, but there's so many portrayals of how plasma weapons can function it's literally not worth considering. If it's supposed to be a 'T2 missile' though, it might function as guided plasma balls as sometimes depicted that you have to charge an array to fire, but can't be self-guided (requires guidance from the launcher).

A solar system would be nice too. 3D space fleet battles offer very different opportunities for ship design; primarily the chance to use weapons built into the spine of a ship, such as massive railguns (MACs) and lasers (wave-motion gun). Akagi's built to the same specs as our old Arstotzkan models should be viable as hell as Space DDGs.

the length of the shell rack required says 1m but it wont feed into the 1 meter clip in the turret.

Is it because the ammo customizer is 2 blocks long? I shortened it to 1 and it finally fed.

I swear I had 3 block long shells feeding into a 1m clip last night.

my cruiser's primary gun is a 250mm/4m length shell and it does almost nothing compared to the two secondary 4 barrel 67mm/1m length guns. I'd replace it with two more of the secondary guns for a better ship but .. it just feels wrong.
