You had to actively change between combat mode/unsheathed and sheathed. It would take about 2 seconds to switch and you would be animation locked while doing so. Monks at that point in time where just Chi-Blast cannons so they weren't used for combat.

Also feeding enemies TP was a real thing and if you had too many people with fast attacks on it, you can make them spam abilities.

XIV is watered down as fuck, but the combat itself isn't awful, there just isn't enough of it. DPS checks are the only way that most of A1-4 "caters to Dark Knights".

Defensively:
A1 is roughly equal for PLD and DRK, with a slight edge to DRK.
A2 caters to PLD, as it's pretty much exclusively physical (blockable) damage, that comes in sustained form rather than in tankbusters.
A3 caters to PLD, as all the tank damage except for Drainage is physical.
A4 is the only fight that heavily favors DRK over PLD.

DRK is better than PLD in all of those fights, but only because of their extra DPS.

The tankbuster being magical in A1 is an incredibly minor point in favor of DRK, because they're so ridiculously infrequent that there's no shortage of mitigation for them. If you're scared of them or your healers aren't on the ball, you can stack Rampart + Sentinel for the first and third, and HQ the second, and if your healers are on the ball, Sentinel alone would keep you alive through it, meaning that your non-tankbuster mitigation is essentially identical to what a DRK has available to them. The raid damage is just not a concern, and wasn't even on the first week at i185 or whatever, and with or without Delirium, people are equally likely to survive and you use the exact same spells to heal them through it.

The auto-attacks and cleaves in A3S are not especially dangerous, but Drainage is much, much LESS dangerous than those, due to being so predictable and so spaced out that you'll always have appropriate mitigation, regardless of which tank you use. The only point where PLD isn't better than DRK defensively is that DRK has more options available to help the party mitigate 6x Splash and Cascade, but those are again so spaced out that the healers can easily come up with a mitigation plan for them that doesn't involve the tanks.

It's a toss-up really. DRK has a lot of oGCD skills, kinda the DRG of tanking in that regard, while AST has quick heals that aren't as potent as WHM's.

If I get into the swing of things, DRK is really fun. If you're not big on oGCDs it can be very tedious. The fun in playing AST, for me, comes from the cards. Being able to buff your teammates or yourself based on RNG is terrible for reliability, but super fun for the risk-factor/gambling-factor.

Pre-30/40 should I grind mobs classic korean grinder-style instead of FATEs? With armoury bonus the exp seems decent.
