The idea of them not having used a version control system is pretty much unthinkable. "We don't have the source" is almost certainly a lie. It's extremely inconvenient to do any collaborative work without one, and if you have the source in version control, you can restore any of the old revisions.

And anyway, even if they for some outrageous reason really didn't have the source for older versions of the server software, most of the work in making "perfect" private server really is in research and retail servers currently have almost all TBC content and a good chunk of vanilla dungeons the way they originally worked (besides numbers that might have changed and some changes to make bosses soloable, which should be well-enough documented changes to figure out the old ones) and they must have at least some resources we don't (for example, the guy who made the durability system probably has at least some idea about how it's supposed to work and, if it has been changed in between legacy expansions and retail, what exactly was changed).

Yeah you had to do hard raids to get them, but leaving it up to drop chance with no quest or any other prerequisite is pretty fucking dumb. Especially when the bow wasn't even good for hunters and was more suited to a rogue or fury warrior (even then the rogue and fury could have benefited more from golden bow). And it also doesn't help that the other was useless as well due to melee being shit and only needing 1 rogue and 1 dps warrior per raid.

The difference in shadowmourne and the capes and rings though is that for the new legendarys you just have to be there. For shadowmourne you at least run the risk of changing up your role or play style to finish the quests. You have act as the OT for the first 2 phases of putricide, you have to be tanky enough to survive sindys breathe multiple times, and you have to get your raid to prioritize you for bites early on BQL as if you're one of the top dps. For the new shit it's just "hey go loot [insert arbitrary amount here] of this thing that drops off the bosses in this one raid." That's not hard, and that doesn't require thought. How does /wspg/ feel about Sulfuras, TF, and Atiesh? I feel it's weird you can get both Sulf and TF without ever raiding beyond MC (since the ingots are BoE and can be bought so you don't need to go to BWL), but other than that I liked how it was sort of a challenge/long journey. Low drop chance items, needing multiple professions, arcanite transmute on CD, huge fun raid boss at the end (although sulfuras didn't have this), etc.

Shadowmourne is only too accessible if you accept the existence of private servers where its wotlk for multiple years. There's only so many shadowfrost shards that can drop in a year, especially when heroic and normal share lockouts like they did on retail. On retail you did need to be in a raiding guild in order to get shadowmourne while it was relevant. If you think guilds that only do the bare minimum of normal shouldn't be eligible then you either don't implement the buff or you force heroics into the quest line. Val'anyr didn't require you to sink gold into the Ulduar equivalent of primordial saronites, so there's an extra bar of entry on it. If you were just getting shadows edge 6 months into wrath you could maybe enjoy shadowmourne for a month or two max before Cata got released.

Involved quest chains are a good thing, but they combine RNG drop fuckery with them being available from easy content. I don't really have a problem with Sulfuras, but Thunderfury was too good and too important to be available like this. I mean, it worked because it was vanilla and people didn't know shit about the game, but similarly powerful legendaries being available in similar manner would have been a Bad Idea in subsequent expansions.

Yes, that's precisely my problem. Legendaries shouldn't be available from trivial content, even if they did take a decent bit of time and gold to get. Total shitters from garbage guilds shouldn't be running around with legendaries, never mind a PuG raid leader. If ICC had not had the buff, I guess I would have been fine with just that (with the special requirements for three bosses, the difficulty would have been roughly in-line with doing Yoggy+3 or Illidan with MGT/ZA loots and SWP badge items and craftables available).

And even if blizzard didn't go lazy and actually made more raids, it still doesn't excuse that there is no way to obtain gear for said heroics without doing the normal modes. It really doesn't, though. There was far more things for a casual player to do and advance their character with in vanilla/TBC than there has been since.

Levelling took longer and there wasn't necessarily even an expectation of players reaching level cap to truly start playing the game (in vanilla) with levelling content not being rendered obsolete with indirect nerfs (I wouldn't call them "difficult", but clearing dungeons in vanilla/TBC was worthwhile content while by WotLK they became total pushovers). "Endgame" 5-mans weren't designed to be facerollable by randoms starting from day 1 (in TBC there was a clear progression curve to 5-man content, starting with normals, continuing with easier heroics like Slave Pens, and if you really wanted to test your mettle, you could try something like heroic Arcatratz). Professions were more involved than identical stat boosts and BoE gear you could have purchased from AH anyway. PvE and PvP both provided gear usable in both in vanilla and even in TBC they weren't quite as separated as they'd become in subsequent expansions (and character growth wasn't quite as high so you kinda had a chance in BGs even as a fresh 60/70 while in WotLK and beyond you just had to bite the pillow and prepare to be globalled while not being able to make a dent to the opponents). And they of course also had raids that were intended to be starter content (Karazhan in particular was brilliant as such) and as the expansions progressed, indirect nerfs started allowing PuGs for other content like ZG and ZA as well.

More recent expansions just ran you through "heroics" that never were intended to be anything more than a brief detour to current tier raids with faceroll difficulty mode, and if you don't want to play non-casually and do the "real" version, you've already beaten the game, grats.

Well, they're not harmful per se. It's just that tuning is the factor that actually makes bosses difficult: a boss that requires 101% of theoretical performance would be difficult even if it was literally tank and spank, as even outrageously good RNG can't push you over the edge unless everyone plays for all intents and purposes perfectly in a perfectly set up raid group, while you could have a hundred different fires covering the room but it doesn't matter for shit if you can just heal through them. Of course, realistically all bosses are somewhere in between but similarly, a boss like M'uru is closer to 101% tuning and a boss like Faction Champions normalmode on 25-man is closer to 100 fires (something like 50 boss abilities are involved).

A lot of mechanics are also there just to compensate for more powerful classes. Consider Antimagic shell: If a boss has 5 second cast for AoE and you can mitigate it with AMS, you simply can't fail hitting an obvious button somewhere within those 5 seconds. The boss has to use another ability to actually make players run and separate wheat from the chaff (minimizing movement and maximizing DPS time are the kind of skills that actually set players apart). As new versions of WoW have kept adding more and more of such abilities to players, they also have to keep adding more and more abilities to the bosses to compensate (really tightly tuned encounter that would require you to both run AND reserve personal cooldowns for specific moments within an encounter would of course require higher performance, but most encounters aren't tuned that tightly).

And then there's a question about the nature of those mechanics. Yes, a sufficiently tightly tuned boss with more actually relevant mechanics has a greater potential to be difficult, but difficulty isn't the only thing I care about encounters. I don't want bosses to feel like a completely arcade-y dance floor.
