I try to play this game every couple of years, but always end up quitting a few hours in. Probably because I'm not very familiar with the setting or the pnp rules that the game uses, so I can't decide what to do, end up playing something else for a while and not coming back until I forget what I was doing. I'm in my 30s and have played RPGs for most of my life, so it shouldn't be that I'm a filthy casual.

Can someone recommend me a "normal" starting class and a few tips on where to put my skill points for a regular vanilla playthrough? My playstyle is usually diplomatic followed by combat.

in terms of gameplay i think gangrel might be the worst clan of all.

toreador and brujah have celerity, and disciplines that increase their power with firearms/meele.

nosferatu/malkavian have potence/auspex and Obfuscate, so it can easly kill most things stealthy, and what he can't, it still not much of a problem to kill with meele/firearms.

tremere have Thaumaturgy and Auspex, it's probably the clan that requires most skill, but still can be very strong with firearms if played properly.


Venture and Gangrel are probably the weakest clans. Maybe venture is worst, but it's hard to say.

Ok, let me give some general directions:

Some sections of the game (around hollywood, the third part of the game) basically requires some direct combat.

Almost all other parts you can kill enemies with stealth (except bosses).

Low leves in stealth will help you with nothing, because even if you are aproaching the enemy from behinf in shadows, he will notice you.
But with some moderate quantity in stealth, you can go and kill them by pressing one button.

Obfuscate is a discipline that makes you invisible, so if you focus on it you wont need much points in stealth and it's much more powerful. Nosferatus and Malkavians have them but DON'T PLAY WITH THEM. This classes were meant for persons that have already played the game once, and in many things the game play in a different way with them.

In cases where combat is unavoidable, you can use meele, your bare hands, firearms, and disciplines.

The only clan that is meant to use bare hands is gangel, and they are not that good as I said, so I would advise you to avoid them.

The best clan for melee is Gangrel, no discussion. And the best clan for firearms is Toreador. Both have presence discipline that makes enemies around them weaker, both have celerity that makes you super fast/makes the world around you in slowmotion, and brujah have potence that increase their melee power, toreador have Auspex that increases their firearm power and some other effects.

In the begining of the game melee is much better than firearms, but in the end firearms is better.

Still, some bosses requires a mix of both (Like Ming Xiao). So try to concentrate on one but not neglet the other.

Tremere rely very heavily on disciplines, it can be very strong, but I would recomend for some future playthrough.

Ventrue doesn't have a combat specialty. As I said, I don't think they are very good.

But Ventrue, Tremere and Malkavians have disciplines that allow unique dialogues/mind control, in general it's not necessary. (cont)

There are many abilities to be used in conversation, such as Intimidate, Persuasion, Subterfuge, and other that have a specific use in one or another case.
Women have more uses for subterfuge than men.
But in general of this, BY FAR, the best is Persuasion.

For a first playthough I would probably recomend Brujah or Toreador. Their ability to slow time is also useful for stealth in some cases.

But that said, COMBAT ISN"T THAT HARD. I usually finish the game only using one healing item in the final boss, and just because I don't see reason to try harder, probably winning without using healing itens during the whole playthrough is very viable. I would say combat is hardest in the begining of the game, and gradually become easier.

Maybe if you choose a clan like ventrue and put all your points in non-combat abilities, it would be hard.... be in general it really isn't.

Avoid Malkavian and Nosferatu and go with what you think is more fun. Even Ventrue that I think is so bad is fine, it will be a little be harder, but still only a little.

The game is made for multiple playthroughs.

I completed the game once. Picked Tremere because I wanted to be a blood mage. It was not that difficult. For easymode with guns just pick Toreador.

Just try to get through the first hours, at some point the sidequests and characters draw you in.

Ventrue and Gangrel can become nearly invincible with Fortitude. Ventrue is also able to start with the highest persuasion which makes a lot of the early game much easier. Gangrel claws suck because of the knockback but if you don't combo with them they still do massive amounts of damage. They might be weaker but they're definitely not weak.

I think Fortitude is a bit overrated. There's a webm where the ventrue is running around taking a lot of shots outside the vampire hunters headquarters, with his health almost not changing.... I was impressed by it. But when I played I concluded that THAT MAP, the outside of the headquarters, is almost the only map in the entire game that have such impressive effect. I guess because by that time you can have fortitude in the highest level, and the enemies have guns that shoot many times but each bullet doesn't do so much damage.

But for most of the game it was a big let down.

Still, I agree with you that they are not "weak" - at least in the sense that you can finish the game without problems with them in terms of combat. But I still think that other clans have a bit of advantage. Like, you can complete everything without any major problem with any clan, but in the end game if you are playing with a Toreador you can do it in more relaxed way than playing with a Ventrue.
