Will video games ever have writing on par with books?
>>
Is this really all I have to do for my book to be made into a movie? Make a bunch of random references? Because that's all it is.
>omg we need the key, but in order to get it we have to play a perfect game a pacman guies!
>omg now we have to go to bladerunner world XD
>>

Batman v Superman made 800 million in the box office.
Mummy (2017) made 405 million.
Even the emoji movie made double it's budget in the box office.
If you want to make a movie, make one that's filled with references or for the Chinese.

>>
>>388444115
That book is reddit tier shit and relies on it's premise and pop culture to remain interesting.
>>
>>388444115
no because writing has to serve gameplay which always ends up with inconsistencies and silliness
>"i was framed for killing a man!"
>kill 100 000 thousand civilians in the game just because
>>
>>388444837
I'm going to then.
I'm going to write a book full of extremely esoteric game and anime and movie references and have no real plot.
It'll probably be out sometime 202X so look out for it.
I'll give a shout out to Koolkid87 in the movie/book
>>
>>388444779
It's text from creepypasta stories. But this book and shitty horror fanfiction suffer from the exact same kind of writing.
>>
>>388444115
Even if it was, you would not notice it.

Good writing in books is providing a plethora of non-visual information that set the tone acccompaning the visual descriptions, feeding your imagination as much as possible while still providing enough concrete information that you have more to go with than "a house, y´know, with people inside and stuff...".
A game is, among other things, a visual medium, which already bars the writing from having that aspect.

And lets get down to the nasty truth; tolkien, for example, has not written great characters or scenes, yet his writing is famous for exactly the information that games could not convey.
>>
>>388444115
No, almost certainly not, and holy fuck that book was awful.

Epic Nerd Girl Porn
by Ernest Cline

I've noticed that there don't seem to be any porno movies that are made for guys like me.
All the porn I've come across
was targeted at beer-swilling sports watching jock morons
Oh, what are you watching... sports ball?
Le sigh.
You may have been all that in high school, but let's get one thing straight
out here in the real world, us nerds are in charge.

These hunks like stupid women
who have surgery because they're too stupid to think for themselves.
They're bimbos
plain and simple
and they're complete idiots
Absolute empty heads
They're objects
I can't get off to that because I respect women too much, even when they're FUCKING VAPID BITCHES WHO HAVE SEX WITH JOCKS.

But I NEED porn.
I need to rub my dick and imagine I'm rubbing it on a woman until I shoot out white cum.
But I need something better.
That's right motherfuckers - I'm talking about an epic nerd girl!
>>
>>388447502
I want a real woman.
An epic nerd girl with scoliosis.
A girl who knows how to use a calculator or owns a calculator.
Super Mario Bros. The Legend of Zelda. Mega Man. Contra. The uh, the one where the kid puts bananas in his ears. Startropics. Donkey Kong. Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Sonic 3 & Knuckles. [sound of one guy in crowd going wooo yeah at sonic 3 & knuckles]

I'm talking about a porn flim where the girl wears GLASSES.

In my porn film there wouldn't even be sex.
The women would just say "There are 10 kinds of people in the world" and I would say "Huh ok go on" and they would say "People who understand binary and people who don't" and I would cum as soon as she said binary.
Imagine seeing a woman playing chess.
Imagine seeing a woman near a chess board.
Imagine a woman saying "Did you hear about the new Star Trek series?" I would jack off to her. Oh god, oh christ, say Star Trek again. I respect you so much unghhhhhhhhh

My name is Ernest Cline. I'm a Forty-Five-year-old author. I've watched every erotic film in existence, and I have never jerked off. There are MILLIONS of nerds just like me, and we're getting sick of people like you blaming your problems on us. Ignorance causes impotence, not nerd girls. Man up and take responsibility. We outnumber you, and the people that think like you. DON'T FUCK WITH US.

No, for the same reason films and tv shows don't.

Video games are all about the visuals and telling the story through actions on the screen. CRPGs are different though, the could have writing as good as a book seen as the story is told mainly through text.

Of course they can. The issue isn't that it's game but who it's being marketed to. This is the most typical response here on /v/ but it's all because of the normies. Yes there are some who like story, yes there are some who like to read, and yes not all of them are as braindead as all of us here make it seem. However the vast majority don't like to read when playing games, they don't pick up foreshadowing, and they don't like intermission-esque sequences in games because they can't just hack and slash enemies. The only way for a game to be on par with a book is if they don't pander to everyone but instead pander to a specific group. Basically make a fantasy game for fantasy fans. Not every gamer Only.Fantasy.Fans.

The whole business of making games enjoyable for everyone is what's killing vidya.

I think you guys overestimate how good books typically are. Like there are some amazing books but is there is it really so extreme that you seriously think even the shitiest books are better then any game's story? Games are a younger, they have had some pretty good stories for the 50ish years they have existed. Maybe the best books are better but there probably exist some games better then a majority of books.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why the religious has never successfully countered any points made by anyone outside their circles. Because they're not operating on the same terms. While reasonable humans argue about things that can be proven and seen, religious people argue about the intangible, the mystery that only they know the answers to. You will reach a point when speaking with a religious person when they run out of excuses and so they have no choice but to fall back on the biggest excuse of all. Take it all on faith. Faith is the answer.
Faith doesn't hold water. There's a reason why religion is on the decline. It was always going to end this way.
Post as many pictures of fedoras, triblys and overweight men as you want, it's not going to convince anyone that your mythology is real.

A lot of mythology reads like anime. There were a lot of stories before Pax Romana that tried to excuse this and that happenstance of nature or politics by saying "god did it". Heck, the Book of Job in the fucking Bible is essentially one long argument about why humans suffer and what God's role is in that suffering.

He believed firmly in an afterlife, stating: "Of course this supposes that there are many relationships which today's science and received wisdom haven't any inkling of. But I am convinced of this [the afterlife], independently of any theology." It is "possible today to perceive, by pure reasoning" that it "is entirely consistent with known facts." "If the world is rationally constructed and has meaning, then there must be such a thing [as an afterlife]."

Just more speculation.

"I like Islam: it is a consistent [or consequential] idea of religion and open-minded"

>"I made my big entrance when I arrived in my flying DeLorean, which I'd obtained by completing a Back to the Future quest on the planet Zemeckis. The DeLorean came outfitted with a (nonfuctioning) flux capacitor, but I'd made several additions to its equipment and appearance. First, I'd installed an artificially intelligent onboard computer named KITT (purchased in an online auction) into the dashboard, along with a matching red Knight Rider scanner just above the DeLorean's grill. Then I'd outfitted the car with an oscillation overthruster, a device that allowed it to travel through solid matter. Finally, to complete my '80s super-vehicle theme, I'd slapped a Ghostbusters logo on each of the DeLorean's gull-wing doors, then added personalized plates that read ECTO-88."

>Every reference is italicized.
This pisses me off way more than it should.
There are much better ways to do this, you could easily say *model number* or just describe the details but instead you have to flat out say what it's from every single time and EMPHASIZE it just so people notice.
When did this book come out, mid 2000s?
Was the author so afraid that someone wouldn't get it or that readers are so opposed to looking something on the internet that they have to stop and tell the audience the origins of the reference?
I wouldn't be surprised if at least one or two ™ or ® are sprinkled in there.

Books, just like every other media, does and can portray things that others have a hard time doing.
There's books worth reading just like there's movies worth watching, just because it is a book though doesn't mean it's good.
People who read books full time these days treat it with like a sense of superiority or pretentiousness when in actuality it's just another way to experience a story.
If you have a hard time reading a book just listen to an audio book, no joke it's actually a lot of fun.

TL;DR
CEO in the future who loves the 80s makes meme virtual world with 80s shit, main character is a fat asshole who idolizes 80s man and loves the 80s more than him.
Fat asshole finds secret in virtual world, becomes famous, no longer fat, e-dates gamer grrrrl strong female, final battle is a clusterfuck of references, there is a reference every other sentence. If you made a drinking game out of every time you read a reference you would die of alcohol poisoning before you get a quarter of the way through.

The entire book boils down to the following.
>reference comes up
>MC spends a page and a half explaining this reference and how he's played/watched/read it a million times over

If you want a silly VR adventure go read Snow Crash, it doesn't take itself seriously

It'll be titled Ready Player Two, as a reference and nod to Ready Player One™ and it'll double as a very subtle wink that it is the second in the Ready Player™ Cinematic Universe.

The protagonist will be a strong gamer girl who lives in the edge of a gritty desert city, who constantly plays 90's games like Doom, Final Fantasy VII, Super Mario 64, Sonic the Hedgehog to escape her humdrum life. She comes upon a automaton who holds the map that leads her to the last stronghold of Gabe Newell, affectionately known as GabeN, who put in a final message that he has a completed copy of Half Life 3, the final installment for the Half Life series, and is willing to give it to the one who finds the map.

Meanwhile a giant mega-corporation styled after the 1995 film, Ghost in the Shell, is chasing down the automaton to get the missing map fragments so that they could get their hands on Half Life 3 and mercilessly turn it into a micro-transaction riddled game. (cont)

took some getting used to the fact the main character is an unironic katana-carrying trenchcoat-wearing hacker weeblord named Hiro Protagonist but after that it was a pretty solid story. it might've been groundbreaking at the time but it's a bit dated with its perception of the internet.

suprisingly enough Neuromancer has aged better, probably because the writer knew fuckall about computers and thus didn't have to get bogged down in thinking about technical shit.

The corporation is willing to get their hands on the map and are willing to use military force to get the plans. The gamer girl then finds a band of resistance members who are fighting the power by pirating games and spreading them across the net.

There will be 90's references galore and it'll have an ending where the strong gamer girl meets up with an older gaunter looking GabeN, who looks at her silently, setting it up to the next installment of the Ready Player™ Cinematic Universe, Ready Player Three™.

holy shit, that is awful
someone actually wrote "Reddit: the book"
I can't believe someone thinks knowing pop culture references and shoving them into a books makes you some kind of special, enlightened, and cultured person
Is it wrong that this makes me want to read the book though? Like I want to see the shit first hand and read it as it's so bad it's good?

It IS pretty lame, but it's not wrong. I saw someone completely rip the book to shreds on twitter and all her followers agreeing, which made me realize two things:
a) These were thoughts I had myself as a teenager
b) Teens who are like how I was is getting bullied out of the video game hobby by the normies appropriating our culture

You'd think it would help, but just like how it was in the 90's, teens gotta hide their powerlevel or face the chance of being labeled as losers, mysogonists or nazies by the very people who claim to be "inclusive".
