Why did a game where you fight a fucking bullet sponge ghost three times in a row without any context or reason get called "a smart game for smart people"?

Bioshock games are for pretentious "skeptics" who think video games are a serious form of storytelling.
>>
>>387566251

The poor man's half life 2
>>
>>387566251
Because the pretentious faggots who say it have no exposure to any other source playing with the same kind of ideas Infinite did. Even though it's all old and recycled as shit to anyone who reads a lot, plays a lot of vidya, or watches a lot of tv and/or movies. To them this shit was their first taste of entry level science fiction.

Because the mainstream vidya critics clique desperately want the medium elevated and want to circlejerk over their own writing on the game.

None of them, however, have a strong critical literary voice. None of them can offer any meaningful insight into the game. They'd rather pat themselves on the back at how great they all are and how great this game must be, and they actually hurt the industry as a whole as a result.

It uses a lot of lofty concepts as window dressing for the plot and for the setting and combines it with a nonsense plot to create an illusion of depth. It falls apart if you go beyond a surface level understanding, or if you notice the ton of plot holes, but critics were wowed by the spectacle. Combine that with >>387567602 and you've got a lot of critics jumping on their own sword to defend a below average shooter.

if you really must play this piss-poor garbage i've no idea why you'd choose 1999 mode, its fucking terrible and makes all the bad gameplay choices 100 times worse.

The whole point of the game is just to pretend to be another Bioshock game, but then reject it and acknowledge its place in the series.

It's a surprisingly meta story about Bioshock/System Shock similar to MGS2.

Its hard mode + you lose a shitload of money if you die, plus gameover if you have no money.
Ideally, you will want to reload everytime you die so you dont screw yourself up without money later in the game.

I beaten it, just like i beaten hard no-vita mode in the previous games, it ends up being very boring in BI because its all about waiting the magic shield reload or elizabeth throw you some extra ammo or life.

I have to confess that when I really liked the story of a game I've watched a good gammer playtrough... because either my gameplay encountered bugs or time I would've spent was a little longer that someone on his 5th playtrogh that does that sort of things professionally for a living on the internet.

So it's basically either me wasting huge amount of time getting tired mid-game.. or watch the entire playtrough of a good story trough the people I mentioned while they clear every single bit of content.

Only games which I found myself enjoying and investing more than 300 hours on average, were adventure / click games, arcadeish games etc.
>>
>>387571226
you obviously have a minority opinion but are scared to elaborate since you'll get fucking destroyed. BI was scrapped and scrobbled together again 6 months before release. the plot does not intentionally put forth anything at all, much less a coherent meta-narrative.

I was recently replaying this, I decided to keep track of some of the obvious plot holes up to lady comstock, where I got bored and quit. Some big ones:
-Booker and Elizabeth travel to an alternate dimension where Chen Lin is alive. How do they know their deal with Daisy Fitzroy for the airbus is still a thing?
-In this new timeline, people who were dead in the other timeline for some reason 'remember dying'. This makes absolutely no sense. Yesterday I accidentally ran a stop sign and was almost hit by a car, there's a version of me that hit the brake too hard and died, but I don't 'remember dying' because there's literally no set up for that. But I decided to be forgiving of this because it wasn't the worst plot device, gotta keep the story going somehow.
-Booker and Elizabeth fight through an entire army base to get weapon manufacturing equipment, for a deal they don't even know is still on. After murdering an entire army, they get down to the factory equipment, and finally figure out they don't know how to transport this. Booker literally says: "I guess we didn't think this all the way through." I can't speak for everyone else who played the game, but I was thinking this the entire way over and was wondering if there was something I was missing that would be explained when they got there. There wasn't. Their solution? Let's just go into a universe where Chen Lin has the equipment and is alive.

*Why was this not the FIRST solution.*

-They then go to a universe where Booker worked together with the Vox and died. The deal with Daisy for the airship most certainly did not happen in this timeline. Booker ignores this obvious point, and continues monologuing, almost as if the voice actor recorded these lines for a completely different story that was then cut, rewritten, and patched together into the mess we got.

>>
>>387571802
>for some reason 'remember dying
This never made sense to me. In the idea of infinite universes you would die of blood loss from the sheer amount of dejavu induced nose bleeds. As well as how dumb the ending was with Liz killing Booker. Booker had already sold her, killing him at that point wouldn't undo anything. Her having an omni sight makes it make even less sense since she would have already known the outcome.

The writers should have just stuck to the original story rather than change everything at an attempt to be deep.
>>
>>387572285
The plot holes are not the point of the story.
>>
>>387571802
con't
-Further evidence of this chopped up script theory is in one of the most obvious plot holes that should make anyone playing put down their control in frustration at the character's ineptitude to make rational decisions. While storming Fink's factory with the Vox to get to Daisy to acquire the reward for a deal they didn't actually complete and in this universe they never even made, Booker has to take down an airship with rockets attached. He then boards the airship, kills the crew, and destroys the airship. So he can continue fighting to acquire an airship. That is even more defenseless than the one he destroys (In fact it gets destroyed as soon as you get on it by a monster you could've fought off with the defenses of the airship you destroyed). It is flabbergasting to say the least, and the only reason I can think they got away with it is because the plot is so stupid by this point, you might've gone braindead trying to ignore it's inconsistencies.

But the thing is that this obvious plot hole is taken shot for shot from the E3 trailer, it's just put in a different place. We may never know what the original script for Infinite looked like, or if it ever made sense, but what we can surmise from the circumstantial evidence available is that this lackluster drawn out series of fetchquests is the product of at least several different storylines cut short, rewritten, and then stitched back together like a Frankenstein monster by the magical plot device 'tears'. It's a horrible story, and I feel bad for any kids and 'nerds' at the time who actually invested in it, because I'm sure life has been very hard ever since for people so willing to delude themselves to believe Ken Levine is somehow a genius.

See, the problem with that is Bioshock Infinite is the second game to do that. So it's referencing a formula that only exists because of this game. That was one of the other points where I was like, I see what you're trying to do Ken Levine, and it's embarrassing, because it looks like you think this bullshit is genius. I mean 2 doesn't count because no lighthouse (thank god it doesn't count, I'm glad if Ken Levine thinks it's not worth mentioning because I prefer it untarnished by his sophistry), so it's just 1 and 3. I wouldn't say, as a creator of the series, "There's always a man, always a lighthouse," because it would just be referencing the fact that I repeated my first game's story beats and I would be embarrassed. But I guess I'm not Ken Levine.
>>
>>387573303
if i was a master bullshitter i'd mention mark meltzer as being the man for bioshock 2's lighthouse. that would be really stupid though. you know what else is stupid? releasing a pc game where you can't reload your Eve supply manually while using mouse and keyboard, unless you edit multiple cfg files.

or one that crashes constantly unless, again, you edit cfgs and play with gimped graphical settings.

i'm still mad

This usually isn't the case for any story, but their existence undermines any point the story tries to make.

For example, if the actual ending to the story had been that Booker and Elizabeth are actually both mentally challenged nutjobs, and that's why nothing they do makes sense, and asked the player to examine how Booker and Elizabeth reflected on them as brain dead 'gamers,' who just absorb a story as window dressing for a boring hallway shooter, then the story might have a point. Instead it's Ken Levin fellating himself for releasing another Bioshock game. Bravo.

Self Analysis is mapping motives, goals, personality, and past achievements. This game does none of that. It never attempts to add anything that would be considered Self Analytical because it does the opposite. Characters don't matter, actions don't matter, and your decisions don't matter. That is the opposite of Bioshock 1&2 where your actions did matter. This was we'll tare apart a game then remake it in 8 months to try and get movie studios and hipster stoners interested.

I think people forget that they were trying to make a bioshock movie for a while, but had trouble getting a studio due to the main character never being seen and never speaking
despite having directors interested. The change in direction was most likely to try and appeal to what they thought movie studios would want. Even to the point of making the main character a generic male lead action star who says things and stuff.

>uhhhh we have to get lady cumsock's key
>in order to open this gate we need a key thats in a tomb for some reason, they buried her with her key. what the fuck
>oh no you disturbed my sleep. lets wrap this arc up quick, i dont have all day
something like that

It wasn't even a Bioshock game when they started it. Levine wanted out of the series, but the publisher demanded they change the game and market it under the Bioshock name or they would pull funding.

Why not jump to an alternate dimension where the gate is already opened? I'm pretty sure we fight the ghost sometime after we jumped dimensions to solve physical problems like the weapons cache already so why suddenly stop?

It was some shit where Comstock brought a version of his dead wife back from another universe, making her dead and alive at the same time. Despite how you've seen the entire dead/alive enemy before, she gets special powers for some reason

Elizabeth has also opened other doors and barriers and even walls with partial tears. But hopefully the players forgot that, it would be really embarrassing to have that pointed out.

The game was fun.

Sorry you only like underwater shooters with hulking enemies called Daddies.

Stay mad.

Hey Bait-kun, why don't you join in pointing out plot holes with the rest of us? I swear, it's just as much fun as failing to trigger people with low quality bait.

Well, it is a 'smart game' for 'smart players' after all.

Did a review actually say this?

Now I played that a long ass time ago but I had zero problem. I think it took maybe 5 minutes total on hard.
