Actual 7.1 headphones have like 4-5 tiny crappy speakers in them. Virtual 7.1 headphones are just stereo headphones with a USB dac/amp or program to make the virtual 7.1.

Just get whatever stereo headphones you want. You can add the virtual 7.1 later. Razer makes a program, some games have it built in, Asus mobos have it built in, SteelSeries has a program, Logitech has USB things, there's the Astro Mixamp if you want to do it on consoles.

You either get two good quality speakers for stereo, or multiple cheap ones for 7.1.

Stereo headphones sound better. True 7.1 headphones have numerous small and crappy drivers in them, not really sounding great but adding slightly more positional audio. If the game supports HRTF/binaural audio, then that beats 7.1 anyway.

Yes this. Razer Synapse is pretty good. It can take a surround signal and turn it into virtual speakers. Just buy some quality stereo headphones. >>>/g/hpg
