How much did you spend on your PC rig? Could you afford it at the time or did you splurge?
It was around $900.
I guess I splurged because I wasn't making a lot of money at the time. Now I have a better job and could afford a better PC. I just have no motivation because of the operating system situation. Windows 7 is dying, Windows 8 is for tablets, Windows 10 is horrible, and people refuse to consider Linux as a gaming platform because they think it's too hard because the Linux community actively discourages new users.
About $700.I had to save up for it because I'm a poor NEET
On the bright side, I got some decent components before the prices went up on them
Why does that man have so many trackballs?

I'm just gonna continue using W7 for as long as possible.

Probably cause you don't need as much space for them as you would for mice
$1500
Yes
Overall, about 1.2k. Really wanted a nice keyboard and mouse.
And yes I splurged a ton lol I was supposed to build the comp over like two months, but I couldn't help it and bought all the parts in a week.
If you're completely new to PC gaming is it cheaper to learn to build one from scratch and buying parts or just buying a pre built rig?

2000$
700$ of it was on the three monitors.
Got a summer job and quit it after having enough for it.

The conventional wisdom is that you'll save money by building your own.
Actually putting the PC together is easy. Selecting the parts is 99% of the work. When I built my PC, people would say that Logical Increments is a good starting place. I'm not sure how popular it is now, but here's the link: http://www.logicalincrements.com/

Build one from scratch. You'd probably save hundreds.

>16 monitor setup to play fucking civilization
why?
$2000 aud with monitor. i didnt pay for it. i sont even game anymore nor did i ever really. if we just count games then it cost me $200 in addition to the game price to play each one
Spent about 1200$ in august of 2016 and got a rig with a i5-6600k and gtx 1070
I think I may have splurged a bit but I did a good job of managing my budget. I was originally going to go for a good i7 plus a 1080 but I realized the diminishing returns wouldn't be worth the almost double price.
I feel damn good about it now that I've had a year to use my pc. I have a 1080px144fps screen so my rig handles pretty much everything right now. Feels good because I can wait five years before having to upgrade my graphics card if I need to.

Right now, I think my entire set up is about $3000 or so. I intend to do a few more upgrades though, so it will continue to go up.
And ya, I could afford it just fine.

Like the other anon suggested Logical increments is a great place to get basic advice and a good frame of mind for what to expect for your budget.
After you've figured out how much you're willing to spend, I recommend going to pcpartpicker.com to look at finished builds in that price range, components, and go bargain hunting.I'm aware of how much of a shill I sound like, but it's good.

Probably about $1200 initially. Taking into account some of the upgrades over time, additional monitors and other misc stuff you're probably looking at about $2200.
Now taking into account the rest of my electronics...
Tektronix 2225 analog oscilloscope: $50
Tektronix 2430A digital oscilloscope: $150
HP 54645D digital oscilloscope: $200
Agilent E5100A network analyzer: $450
Wavetek Model 288 20MHz signal gen: $100
BK Precision 3011A 2MHz Function Gen: $50
Fluke 8375A bench multimeter: $100
Two DC PSUs: $50 each
So there's an additional $1200 worth of instruments plus the base price of the PC.

it's a 16k setup, probably anything else wouldn't even go beyond 3fps
Bought my computer second hand off a friend and have only upgraded it one part at a time, over time maybe 500-600$ idunno, got my 970 second hand for 200$ when the 1000's series came out i think and that's my most expensive upgrade yet. (Live in yurop so keep in mind gpu's go for a bit more here because reasons???)
>mfw my 5yo Phenom II still runs like a champ.
Next upgrade will be SSD since my 5yo HDD aint exactly running like a champ anymore.

You can build that same thing for $1200
logicalincrements.com
I bought what I could afford at the time and then upgraded throughout the course of the next year. Spent about $900 initially. Then upgraded from there:
>went from 8gb to 16gb DDR4
>upgraded from i5 6500 to i7 7700k
>Cryorig H7 cooler to corsair H100i V2
>sold rx 480 to miners and upgraded to gtx 1080 for about $20
>upgraded monitor, keyboard, and mouse
probably have at least $1500 in it nowadays
