Am I the only guy here who wishes he spent more time drawing instead of playing video games ?

I have a tablet and yet I've neglected trying to draw.
I have no excuses i'm just shit.

Nah I gave after realising how long it actually takes to git gud at drawing unless you're a talent.
>>
>>386824763
No because artists have shit jobs unless they work doing concept art. I would hate to whore myself drawing generic "lewd" art for mouth breathers way more than I would hate doing concept art that would get butchered when it transitions through another form of media.

Yes, I'm sure getting 5k to 10k a month on patreon is such a horrible lifestyle when your only requirement is one drawing minimum per month. It must be torture.

This is why faggots like you wont make it. See that total playtime of yours? Just imagine if you spent it on drawing hentai instead of playing gaems. Yeah you'd still be shit at it, but not as shitty as you are right now; You'd actually be one step closer to drawing like shadman/asanagi or whichever degenerate you're following.

>>386825552
>You're either born talented or shadman is the limit.
What of it? Why do you feel the need to give the fuck about other people's being (not) talented? Ignore everything else and JUST DRAW. Focus on your own improvement and Im sure as hell improvement will follow.

not worth it. If I can't even be better than shadman there's no point
>>
I thought about getting into drawing, but then I realised that what gets me off the most is the stories that accompany pictures, not the actual artwork.

Some of my favorite "artists" have the drawing skills of a 5 year old. Looking at a beautiful picture does nothing for me, Samus might as well be a fucking tree for all the impact she makes on my penis. When I was 12 it might have been attractive, but now there's such an over-abundance of decent art that it does nothing for me.

Shadman doesn't try to improve. He draws shit porn because people get off to it, and that means he has an interest base which can supply him with income. He doesn't have a reason to improve when his shit style has become popularized, even iconic among certain fetish groups. Don't tell me you don't recognize a Shadman drawing when you see it, because you probably do. That's actual power, in an odd way.

You'd have a reason to improve, unlike Shadman, and waiting for some external force to push you is, inevitably, fruitless. Most people starting solid habits have to push themselves to do it for a while, then it becomes routine/common, and something is produced from that. It's similar to lifting, if that analogy makes any sense to you.

Basically, NIKE it.
>>
It's never too late to start. Ulimately though. Just live your life to be happy. Beyond that it's all just pointless really.

I never mentioned anything about paywalls or whether he likes his work or not, just that he doesn't have anything really urging him to improve his art, and he has an audience that appreciates his art as it is.

Didn't he have an active patreon for a while?

If he draws what he wants and has fun, good for him. That's the way to do it.

I've increased in skill substantially over the past 4 years from when i could only do front-facing disproportionate figures.
I should probably start practicing animals and 3-dimensional objects as well though. But I'd say I'm pretty good proof that if you just keep practicing you'll eventually get better
>>
>>386828679
Paywalling digital art kind of is. Not because it's wrong to want money, but because in CURRENT YEAR people who work digitally should understand the benefits of a large audience "pirating" your stuff.

You're already shutting yourself down here with this point which is more of an excuse than a reason. The stress you're putting on yourself only matters if you're trying to go for commission/donation money. If that's what you are going for, you're turning from "wanting to draw for recreation" to "having/needing to draw as a job".

This is true to some extend, I was originally only draw something that interested me only for like a year or two and manage to get my fb fan page to have 300-400 likes, but at a painfully slow pace, until one day I decided to draw a pic about a big idol group that's a big thing in my country at the time and over the night my fan page likes skyrocket up to 700+ just like that.
Sadly in this day and age being an artist is not about the quality of your work anymore, but it's about trend, that's why you see so many shitty artist with over thousands of follower everywhere.

Nothing wrong with anime in itself but if it's all you know how to draw by either copying what you see in magazines or pausing movies then you have a long ways to go. If you do it for fun and can draw from scratch from your head in your own style cool. If all you do is redraw shit that already exists...you're not an artist. I'm just saying. Not sure which one you are personally.

I know how that is. I had to quit my job because it messed with the rhythm of my whole life. I sympathize with you.

It's refreshing to see good Western-style art. Good luck with that picture. Wicked start for a dishonored picture.

Please make the platform/tower crumbly and stony. That would look sick.

On the plus side the spasms help with typing. I moved on to writing fiction and now I can type real fast.

I make a point of reading or writing for at least an hour every day, and when playing story-heavy games I make note of the plot progression and structure. I'd still really like to be able to draw fat anime titties but this will do just fine.

And I do! I've taken a couple of shots at writing smut. It's fun but harder than it sounds.

The problem for me is that I over-describe characters because I have a visual idea of what my characters look like and really want others to see them as I do. I care a lot about visual storytelling and character design, but it's hard for me to talk about what makes it important without being able to design them myself.

So instead I just collect KOF fanart.

I really like KOF's approach to character design in that characters for the most part are wearing either normal stylish clothes, traditional martial arts costumes, or small variations thereof. There's a certain tactile feel to an inverted nipple pressed against your palm or an eyelash brushing against your cheek that doesn't always translate so well through words, you know? I find if I try to describe the really nice little things like that I end up using twice as many words to say half as much.

Though I noticed that in smut I also have a tendency to dwell on descriptions of how a woman smells, which is probably even more pointless.

Smell-o-vision when?
>>

When you learn from unrealistic proportions, it is wrong. You always start by drawing from real life, otherwise you make mistakes (small ribcage, hips come up too high on the body, slightly short arm) already present in the artists work.

No. I spent all my time in high school thinking I was going to be an artist in the future and neglected my other classes. Now I'm about to graduate with a STEM degree with a 3.6 GPA, but I could have avoided all that bullshit had I just given up on what would be a useless career sooner. Do some research into getting a loan and starting your own business in the field, see if it's feasible for your line of work. Then you're the boss and you can have someone do the boring parts of the work for you. If it works out and you start making money you can invest in a townhouse and rent it out to students for automatic money.

I'm oversimplifying it, but at 30 you're probably at the ideal time to give it some thought.

Pretty much completely unrelated, actually. My handwriting is worse than yours, I guarantee it. It was bad enough that my teachers often made me type essay sections instead of write them on tests. Drawing is a conscious effort to make something look good while with handwriting, you're just trying to get your ideas on the paper as quick as you can. You just want an excuse to not even bother trying.

I used to draw a lot. Participated in the draw threads, then my art blog got popular enough that people started asking if they could commission me.
I stopped for awhile though. Just a combination of not thinking my art was worth the praise it received and just not wanting to draw fan art anymore. Every time I posted art for an idea of mine it would get overshadowed by the fanart.

I feel a lot of guilt for stopping though. I legit can't focus on playing video games anymore because in the back of my head I know I should get back on that horse and start drawing again, but I feel no motivation or purpose to it when I do sit down and try to draw.

Don't kid yourself. You were never gonna make it. If you practice smart and hard, you'll surprise yourself. Of course, someone with your mindset has never practiced smart and hard at anything.
>>
they key is to not get flustered and angry when things don't work out like you want and instead keep a cool mind and rationally think about what you want to achieve and how you can get there. also do art projects rather than random doodles and try to do as much planning you need in order to get the project done. doing projects and writing down every little step you need to do to get there has always helped me the most, not only speaking about drawing here.

Talent isn't some kind of hidden perk, talented people know they have an aptitude for certain things. Physically gifted kids very soon find out that they can do things faster and stronger than other kids their age, intellectually gifted kids start easily solving problems their peers can't wrap their heads around. I don't see why artistic capabilities should be different. I doubt Rembrandt struggled for years drawing kawaii-uguu shit until suddenly hardworking himself god-tier drawing ability.

Yes, some people start better and learn faster. Obviously. But you realize that all of the people you described need to still practice, right? Why do you think that drawing is some magic skill that only a select few lucky people will ever get any good at?

But I probably shouldn't bother. You've already decided there's no point in starting so nothing I say will change your mind., and then you'll use your own failure as further 'evidence.'
>>
>>386824763
The only gain I'd have for drawing is being able to make my own lewds when I need to.

I'd probably draw a lot of girls in helmets and masks and then hold the unmasked variants of the pics for ransom of 20-40 bucks or so. All it'd take is one guy to set it free, no Patreons or anything. Just one guy has to pay for the unmasked version and I'd keep doing this to no end.

That's just not true at all. Shadman's flaws aren't his skill, they're his choices.

He gets by without properly structuring shit and he "feels" the drawing without checking. Which is why you see his disproportionate faces and his sloppy line control/thickness. Anything that looks "right" doesn't feel instinctive, but rather that he just got lucky compared to a few of his other etchings. Other artists with strong choices or noticeable quirks in their skill can at least replicate them consistently, but Shad can't even get his faces consistent. Another aspect of his work is that he tries to make 2D figures look or feel gross to some degree. If not visually, then definitely in narrative.

Shad gives self-taught a bad name, because it's either that he hasn't properly studied fundamentals or he just glanced over them with little revisiting and just figures "it just works" since not many people understand the work behind being good at or getting better at drawing. A lot of being self taught is about studying and challenging the rules of your own ability or style, sometimes even adopting things from artists you admire be it techniques or stylish choices. Shad on the other hand hasn't grown much because he doesn't seem to feel the need for it.

Anyone has the potential to better than Shadman, you just have to realize you never stop doing homework to get better as an artist.

If you want to draw on a screen, Monoprice makes a respectable tablet monitor. I think it's just called "tablet monitor" and it costs $400. Mind you, it's for use with a desktop, but it's not half bad.

Surface Pro is a decent product for its price (I don't think the new models come with the pen anymore, though. Ditto with keyboard) but they don't have a very long lifespan (2 years, roughly). I like their form factor and the pen fidelity is serviceable but because it's all one unit, you run into the problems you have with a mac where it's difficult to service.

Those fucking suck. You open up a browser and it heats up with the fan sounding like a hair dryer. Even worse with Photoshop or CSP, though SAI is lightweight enough for it to remain calm. SAI's really what you want to be using anyways.

If you're searching for a tablet, get an Intuos Pro.
I can't even recommended a cintiq, the screens are a bit off on them. Colors are off and the pixel density is weird despite the high res. I believe the screen material makes the pixels seem more apparent.

If you REALLY want some comfy drawing though, get a Samsung Tab A with S Pen and download Medibang Paint.
Screen is a bit small, but if you can get used to it, it will be the best drawing tool you'll ever use. Insanely fucking comfortable, affordable, and convertible.
You can also but Bamboo smart pens to use with it since the S pen is pretty small.

If not the Tab A, they have a newer model with a higher resolution, but it's more expensive at the moment.

iPads can do the job too but they're super expensive and the app choice is piss poor. Apple pencil is retarded too.

But yeah, tab A with S pen for a comfy, convertible drawing experience or Intuos Pro for desktop.

Man sometimes its a little surprising how much our lives is controlled by the desire of pussy, males are capable of enduring all kind of shitty things just to get some pussy, or they endure the boredom of learning tedious new things, just so they can express the female form in better ways with drawings, music, books or movies.

I mean, how tedious is to draw every day, seeing almost no improvement? Its enough to drive anyone to suicide, and yet some guys to did, simply because they want to draw cute girls or their waifu.

People give ships female names simply to make the crew protective of the ship, and it works, just using a cute girl on the cover of a game is enough to guarantee some sales even for ultra shitty games.

And all way, the worship of the female form is the undercurrent beneath it all. Honestly how would the world look if we were not programed from birth to desire the female body that much? Sometimes I wonder how much of our love for cute girls is natural, and how much is just us following our basic animal nature, are we even truly free, or are we just slaves who forgotten we are forever chained to the desire for pussy? Sometimes I think people without sex drives might be happier than us.

Tumblr, Twitter and Instagram are the best places to really get yourself out there.

A lot of people scoff at the idea of using those sites given their userbase at first, myself included, but if you don't poke the fat ugly bear it won't fuck with you. Been posting porn to Tumblr and haven't had a single Sjw bitch at me, just a real bad porn bot problem.

The key is to know how to tag your stuff properly. Look at a bunch of popular posts and artists, then look at the tags/hashtags they used and follow suit. Also, get out there and make friends with other artists so you can shill each other's shit.
>>
>>386856123
Don't kid yourself, /ic/ is a meme. It's purely a board for shitposting rather than improvement. Just posting "it's shit" is not sugarcoating it, it's not providing tips for improvement. Don't seek that from /ic/, seek it elsewhere so you can actually improve rather than have a shit drawing, be told it's shit, then keep drawing said shit or give up because you weren't given proper guidance.

>>

Fuck no. It's much easier on paper, you have to re-learn when you're using a tablet, especially if you don't have a super expensive screen tablet.

Loomis is a decent step by step guideline from complete amateur to advanced levels, if you want a road map of sorts.
>>
>>386858924
I learned how to draw people in middle school by first tracing a dragon ball picture, then obsessively trying to memorize each line until I could draw the muscles from memory.
In retrospect, it was kind of a stupid way to go about it because I wasn't learning the underlying anatomy properly, but it worked eventually when I grew older and smarted and absorbed the theory behind those lines.

My point is there's nothing wrong with copying, just be sure to try to understand the principles behind what you're copying, don't do it mechanically like I did.
>>
>>386858936
Actually I struggle with a tablet too, my outlines seem... weird. Like, too "solid" even if I do by one point? Unlike most professional art.

>>
>>386858537
The easiest way to practice drawing weird angle is to draw with reference. you can take the reference picture of your own or just google for some of it.

And as my art teacher always says draw what you see not what you think, cause most of the time it's your mind taking tricks on ya.

>>386858924
It would be studying, I think if you try to look at some of the famous digital artist you'd see that most of them did their study from another photos too.
>>
>>386859123
Tablet drawing is not easy when you aren't used to it. Experiment with brushes until you find one you like, and practice linework with it, even if it's just by copying / tracing reaction images and retooling them to be animu girls.

If you're willing to improve further, then the next logical step is to start any of your drawing with a rough sketch first before committing the actual lineart on top of it. Surprisingly enough lots of beginners avoid doing this since they don't want to draw the same thing twice, but in the end they took more time fixing mistakes instead.
Heck, even professional artist still uses rough sketches.
>>
>>386862084
Maybe his weakness if anything, is that he's not great on a conceptual level which is why 90% of his work, while being well done, are just cute girl's faces. His more original works seem to lack a certain energy that his inspired and referenced pictures have. Though that's not necessarily a bad thing if you like subdued pictures of cute girls and he likes making them, but he could probably stretch his wings more and be more daring and experimental.

I do decent with reference but when i go by imagination everything falls apart. And i even try to not follow the refference too much because its more boring to try to pay attention to every little measurement and proportion instead of rebuilding the form and using the reference as assistence.
I also cant finish a piece wich makes me feel uncomplished. Like everything feels pontless. All i do doesnt pass the sketch fase and whenever i try to force myself to finish it i get unsatisfied with the drawing halfway through and just scrap it.
>>
>>386866364
I think some gesture drawing would really help you. Try a few rounds of quickposes. You're not supposed to be paying attention to every little measurement of references, you're supposed to be using them to get the general idea. Timed drawing like quickposes will help you with that.

It's a very common thing for an artist to feel like his art is shit. It happen to all kind of artist, all the time, you're not alone bro.

>lower the difficulty bar
I think you're mistaken somethings here man, 70's anime style is not a bit easier than modern anime style, just drawn differently.

It's all about simplification, you see. And that's where most of the beginner artist falls short. Anime style is just a simplified version of what you see irl, but the trick is that they're simplified in very specific place base on their respective style. For example the 70's anime style heavily simplified the shape of human bodies but not as much on the head as, say, the modern anime style.

If anything you should really learn the basic of real human anatomy first then tried to simplified it to the style you like, and believe me when I say it's the most boring part of being an illustrator, but when you really get the hang of it. drawing in difference styles will be as easy as getting your dick hard.

The problem that you're having with having an ideas in your head but unable to put it in to paper is just the matter of the "image library" in your mind, which can be fix by using reference images and years of drawing different things. Also going outside and sketch whatever you want or see is also a great exercise to fix this problem too.

I hope this help you somewhat. Remember that it's always better to have dreams rather than none at all. It's already 2 am here and I need to go see dentist tomorrow. Good luck with your career!

Skill without practice is a meme.
The genetic lottery is not, especially when it comes to the arts.

You're probably trying to put words in my mouth as you read that, so I'll clarify: Of course people with talent still have to train constantly in order to realize that talent. People who squander their potential are in no short supply. The people who sit at the top will always tell you about how hard they work, as will the people around them.

However, there are those who will simply never shine in a particular field, no matter how hard they work. Their best is still mediocre. Hell, there are some people who are so utterly devoid of mental capacity in any area that even the act of mopping a floor confuses them. Potential is an unfortunate fact of life.

I've wanted to learn to draw for years. Wanted to be a concept artist at one point. The main thing stopping me is a lack of creativity, or something. I don't know how to put it into words. I'd suggest using these instead. It's a whole lot easier to use and pose. I personally wouldn't recommend using wooden figures as they are too stiff and are very hard to pose, or maybe I'm just to stupid I don't know.
>>
>>386870505
I actually wanted one of these but fuck me, the import price to my country is thrice the price of the fucking figure.
I have one S.H. Figuarts a friend gave me tho, would that help?

>People with talent
You make a good point but I'm going to assume anon here>>386867830 Isn't the type to be confused by mopping a floor, some people are retards yes, but the people who don't improve at all are the ones with autism who CANNOT improve.
I'm honestly not trying to put words in your mouth but simply saying "this artist's art is good because they were born with talent" is incorrect
>>
>Wanting to draw instead of play games
I understand wanting to do something more productive but drawing and other traditional is the one industry that you will never be able to even come close to touching. It's an elitist group that doesn't let in any outsiders, ever, which is why the industry is dying.
Instead of traditional art you should write a short story, novel, children's book, or screenplay. You even have a better chance making it as an actor or musician than as a traditional artist. You even have a better chance making your own game.

>>386869628
You'll never know which you are until you've dedicated yourself at it seriously. Even great, "talented" artists go through a lot of self-loathing on their road to mastery.
And let's face it, odds are you aren't actually mentally deficient in a way that prevents you from putting shit you see on paper.

You set up poses with them and they'll help you get perspective and lighting somewhat right. You still need to actually have knowledge of anatomy though because they'll only help guide you.

Figurines like these >>386870505 are much more helpful, but even the anatomy on them is kind of wonky and the range of motion is limited so you still need to study to get things right.

The problem is that games bring instant satisfaction whereas with most things like drawing, it takes an absurd amount of time to see any payoff.

Most people end up being discouraged and going for the instant joy. It's different when you were a child since children have way more free time and don't care if the drawing they made looks like shit.
