New Vegas. The game even touches upon its real-life history if you ask Joshua Graham about it, although (presumably for legal reasons), they don't name the gun or its creator, John Browning.

That's how you were supposed to use it back then, that's literally the stance the military was teaching. If you see somebody using a handgun two-handed in a WW1 or WW2 game, that's most likely an anachronism.

Because .45ACP is sub-sonic by default, the M1911 is still widely available and even in limited service use, and the stock 7-round mag works as a fine auto-balancer that stops players from spamming bullets at enemies' direction.

And now, after 30 years, it is being shown more and more that the wonder-nines aren't so wonderful at penetration as originally thought, so the extra rounds turn out to be necessary just to stop a threat. And so the .45 has been making come back. Besides, .45 now has more choices in power factor than any other round.

OKAY so I did a quick google and here's what I've got:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTJDq9KWyB8

I've skimmed the video (will watch later) but they do discuss both one-handed and two-handed firing techniques. They show two-handed as teacupping, though. Anyway, it's not unrealistic to have a soldier using a 1911 one-handed in a WW2 game, though having him using it two-handed isn't anachronistic either.

Showing that when not used in mediums that have rapid changes in density, like the human body, the 9mm performs poorly.
>what is ballistic gel
A bad method of testing that allows people to only approximate a guess as to how a projectile will perform. A consistent density will affect projectile path and penetration far differently than rapidly changing densities and fluidities.

Even .380s regularly perform as well as significantly more powerful rounds in ballistic gel.

>what are wound vectors
Pistol rounds do all their damage by the tissue they actually hit. Temporary wound cavity is meaningless, and has no physiological effect. Any round going under 2,000fps will only do damage by the tissue it directly impacts. In that case bigger is better.

>what is muzzle velocity
Not going to make up for a round that is too late if the round can't hit some significant milestones. .357mag does so well because it breaks 1300fps on lighter rounds, and can still get above 1200fps with heavy rounds that 9x19 can barely push to 1000fps. Also, lighter rounds lose energy much faster, so they might have amazing initial penetration, but they don't retain enough inertia to keep it (it's one of the reasons why .357 appears to do no better than a .40, .45+p or 10mm when doing barrier penetration tests).

>You weren't "supposed to" hold the pistol one handed.
except that every major military taught soldiers to fire a pistol one handed
the side arm has always been a defensive weapon, and when firing defensively, you want to present the smallest target for return fire.

A two handed pistol grip was only adopted after the widespread adoption of ceramic armor, where survivability increased while presenting your plate to the shooter instead of your side.

Well yeah, of course shot placement is always key. The caliber and velocity of a pistol round don't make much of a difference as long as you hit something vital or break bone. A .22 in the heart kills you just as much as a .44 mag. It's just that weaker calibers can get deflected by some tissue/bone under certain circumstances which effects can be minimized by choosing a bigger or at least and faster moving bullet.

No. This shit was just recently courted:

Military designations (M16, STG-90, M9 ...) are do not trademarks or copyrighted. You cannot copyright appearances and demand compensation for fictional representations, unless the EXACT looks are somehow very integral to your trademarked design.
There are numerous manufacturers and models for 1911 handguns, dozens of AR15 rifles by different makers... etc.

IF you called it a "Colt 1911", you could get into minor problems - but even then it'd easily fall into the fair use category, even more so if it'd be used in a fictional yet historical re-creation of some sort. However, calling it merely "M1911" is a-OK through and through.

MGS3 and 4 have great 1911s but there's little reason use to them since you'll be doing no kill runs usually. Also you can unlock Big Boss' Custom 1911 in MGS4 by typing in a certain code.
CoD4 has a good 1911, it does decent damage, has a good fire rate and holds 8 bullets. It's outclassed by the USP and deagle in every way but it's still easy to kill with it like with every other gun in that game.
In Bad Company 2 the 1911 is probably the best sidearm in the game
Blood Money's Silverballer is the only gun you'll need to use unless you try to go on a rampage (not because it's bad for that, but because you'll run out of ammo) or want to snipe very far as it doesn't have the range of the WA2000 despite the scope.
Rainbow Six Siege's 1911 isn't that great, but you can get away with any gun in that game if you can headshot. It does decent damage for finishing off enemies too.

I wish more games had this gun, it's beautiful

Because they were in a zero-sum situation, so they repurposed older, rugged designs, overbuilt them, and made them reliable in that way.

Seriously, Uzis are heavy as all fuck, they're basically solid blocks and they use the classic retard-proof operation mechanism for an SMG, and Galils are literally just fucking rechambered AKs with different furniture. Of course they're reliable.

Yeah, these. I've only seen evidence AGAINST the licensing thing. As far as I can remember, it was like one Eurogamer or Polygon article that talked about it, but otherwise it's just been people saying there's licensing now for some reason. There's nothing really in the copyright info of the newer Battlefield games and the like, that should tip people off.

Aesthetics aren't actionable, and if they just use "M1911" or whatever other numbers there's nothing else, either. The real reason MGSV dumped them was for the customization system and an airsoft deal that never materialized, GTAV did it because they've always used frankenguns, and anyone else does it for style or laziness. Nobody's been sued over this.
>>
>>386462719
Alright, retard. Let's get some things straight. The original comment was concerning Call of Duty WaW. So we're talking about a military application in the time frame of 1939 to 1945. Engagement ranges in CoD rarely extend beyond 25 feet.

NOW, in this situation, EVERY MILITARY at the time taught it's soldiers a one-handed firing technique.

I have never once argued that two-handed techniques did not exist. It was simply implied in this conversation that the one-handed technique was incorrect. Which it is not.
>>
>>386463134

>>
>>386462212
And since Metal Gear and Resident Evil called the guns by their exact real life names(Beretta 92fs, Remington 870, H&K USP SOCOM, H&K PSG1 etc.) they had to pay licensing fees which is why they switched to fantasy names and even designs in the case of RE in later games.
>>

No. No, no, fuck off. Please, find me an article that says this. Find me a court case, anything demanding they did, find me a fucking copyright in a manual that suggests they even did that.

I have never seen a single shred saying anyone paid licensing fees like that except like one time EA was a little spooked a couple years back, and people generally avoid the name thing. They did change that, but I have never seen that they did it to avoid fees they were already paying instead of just dodging the idea of it, and designs aren't actionable.

Read that. Look at that. Direct, unaltered appearance of a gun from a major company. There's a couple more that are, but I point that one out because it's replacing the Samurai Edge standbys of the series. It was for style, they did that for whatever reason, but if it was for licensing it wouldn't be like that. Note the name, which would be the only actionable part they could get dinged on.

MGSV changed it and people theorized that and decried that because of the series' usual accuracy. They later confirmed it was for the customization system, not licensing.

Again, man, I really don't mean to be rude, I really kind of want to be proven wrong and shown evidence otherwise. But for however long this meme has been going for, I have not seen a single piece of evidence that's why developers are doing this now.

he said "likely an anachronism", which is a completely valid statement given that, during WW1 and WW2, two-handed pistol firing techniques were taught to increase accuracy at long range, and since we are talking about VIDEO GAMES, engagement distances are going to be short in almost all cases.

Now there are going to be exceptions, of course, which is why I assume he said "likely", so as not to trigger autists like yourself. Life is full of tragedy, however.

The Beretta 92 had a couple of locking block failures back in the 80s when the Navy SEALs tested them. This was because they used ammo that the Beretta wasn't rated for. Beretta solved the problem back then. ( if you can call it a problem) There are no structural faults because of the open slide design.

The only legitimate gripe one could have about the 92 is their preference of frame safeties over slide safeties.

Stick to video games if you don't know what you're talking about.

Mafia is actually pretty weird in that you need 2 headshots from most guns to kill enemies, including Colt 1911. The anachronistic (I'm using this correctly this time, I swear) Magnum revolver kills enemies in one gut shot, though, but it has huge recoil. It's not like they don't react to headshots, though - they do that animation where they grab their heads, kind of like in nu-Fallouts, so you can finish them off more easily.

States do not maintain a registered database on who owns what firearm by what serial number, numbnuts. The longest any serial number for a firearm sold is 24 hours, by law. States and the Federal government are directly prohibited by the The Firearm Owners' Protection Act of 1986 (FOPA) to keep any database that directly ties a firearm to its purchaser/owner. There are some exceptions for grandfathered items, and some states and cities do maintain (illegally) limited databases.

Deagle is not a useless gun. People just don't actually know what it's use is because of it appearing in military games.

If you can make a gun functional, that's great, but there's no reason you can't add beauty on top of it. There is no law that says a gun's functionality is equal to its effectiveness.

>MGS3: You get some "super amazing" M1911 from EVA
>Proceed to just use the Mk.2

>MGS4: Receive the both the Operator and the Mk.2 at the same time, and also gain access to a whole slew of weapons
>Just use the Mk.2 and get annoyed when the game equips a different weapon for you after cutscenes

>MGSV: All the weapons
>FULTON FULTON FULTON

To be honest, I don't understand the point of all the other weapons sometimes. Especially since the game demands stealth and on higher difficulties, if you get caught, you may as well just give up because you're gonna die after two or three shots anyway. Firing any weapon that's louder than a pin-drop is almost guaranteed to sound an alert, so why WOULD you use anything other than the tranquilizer or, if you're not feeling particularly friendly, another silenced automatic?

I've seen some people blame tranquilizers, but I don't think that's it. It's the stealth. Don't get me wrong, I like stealth games, but does any stealth game really NEED five different rocket launchers and a dozen automatic rifles? If your goal is to make sure no one knows you're there, an AK is not gonna be the best weapon to use. MGS1 didn't even have tranquilizers, but you still couldn't use most of the weapons the majority of time except for certain specific instances because they make too much noise. I mean, I COULD use the FAMAS to take someone out, but that would just summon all the guards to me. I COULD hide somewhere and take out guards one by one with the NIKITA, but again, that'd instantly trigger an alert. I COULD use grenades and C4, but once again, same issue.

Yeah, you've gotta put challenges on yourself to make the other weapons actually worth using.

No-suppresser runs of MGS3 are really fun, though. I ended up doing a sort of 'loud stealth' by using grenades as distractions and ambushing enemies with the shotgun. Planting C4 on people's backs is actually super useful in certain parts of the game, too. They don't go on alert if you kill them in one hit, generally, so you have a tiny bit of time to try and hide from the people who will hear the gunshot.

It's a grey area. While it won't stand up in court it doesn't mean they wouldn't be able to start shit and if that happens for a videogame that means halting production pulling it off shelves etc. The threat of the lawsuit even if it's highly unlikely to be a win is enough to deter people from using the trademarks.
>>
>>386464427
The reason you've been seeing countersuits regarding gun licensing is because since early the 2000's EA has been posturing that it's bullshit that they have to pay licensing fees for fictional productions because it's not like they're trying to sell you a knockoff or something. EA essentially has spearheaded the push for changing the way licensing works for fictional media.

APS is probably the best machine pistol ever made. It's got a rate reducer in the grip which make it fire at only 750 RPM. With the stock it's extremely controllable.

For whatever reason most machine pistols don't have rate reducers, which makes them impractical because of the 1200 ROF on , for example, the Glock 18.

Almost all firearms require a strong grip to provide the base needed to operate the action. Pistols require it nearly entirely, while rifles rarely do. Pistols require the shooter's arms to recoil against , such that the ejector can achieve enough momentum to actively launch the empty case our of the action and draw forward the new round. The physics behind this are undeniable, if the shooter's grip is too weak, most guns, and most prominently Glocks and other tilting barrel actions, like the Browning HP and M1911, will suffer malfunctions. To believe otherwise is fallacy, and a direct admission of ignorance on the workings and behaviour of firearms.

I don't think I've ever played a game that portrayed the .45 as heavy as it really is.

I suppose the same could be said for just about any vidya gun, but the 1911 is not a light little peashooter like most games make it out to be.

It may be outdated but like I give a fuck what a bunch of armchair general/gun experts think, it's a nicely designed firearm.

Sad to hear that, maybe at least one is a complete overhaul?
>>
>>386494901
I liked that, but it was kind of moot with the Mauser outclassed it in the game and you could get it before that. Also like the other Anon said it was an FN 1903, but it was another browning gun of similar design.
>>
>>386495597
The one the other anon listed is a complete overhaul. Might check it out, never used any facial overhaul mods my self, never bothered for it, after living with them for trillions of hours in Oblivion, New Vegas' look downright sublime.

Well I don't know about Murican law but here (?) the name Colt would definitely fall under brand protection if they got the license. I do not know of any arms manufacturer that deposited a demand for a tri-dimensional brand but I could see them doing it for the 1911.
But most companies don't want to risk being in legal trouble, so they just change the names.

I still love that the M45 can be used as a useful primary if combined with extendo mags and AP ammo
>>
>>386491750
They didn't though. They were remarkably resilient weapons that only have a bad reputation because they told soldiers the rifles were magic and "self cleaning". They had no maintenance as a result and became shitheaps clogged with everything.
>>
>>386496910
I would've explained that to him, but I was just trying to some it up.

Also, the army changed the powder for the new 5.56mm cartridge that the very last minute to a faster burning type. This caused more fouling than usual and combined with your points of poor to no maintenance, was a recipe for disaster.

Not only that, it caused the gun to cycle faster than it was designer to. I watched an interview with one of the designers and he pretty much outright called it a sabotage.

There is only one or two manufactures out there that make supersonic 45auto, and you'd have to use a +P rated gun to be able to fire those

PAL is a is a Canadian firearms license.

In Canada, there are three different legal categories of firearms:

Nonrestricted
Restricted
Prohibited

Nonrestricted can be purchased with a basic PAL and shot on public ranges or on crown land (land owned by the monarchy).

Restricted requires another license on top the PAL called an R-PAL. Restricted firearms can only be used on approved firing ranges and cannot be used on crown land

Finally, Prohibited are guns that are specifically banned by the Canadian gov't from 1977 to present. These firearms can still technically be bought and possessed (provided you have a prohibited license) but if you're an average joe blow then you'll probably never get one. But if you possessed a prohibited firearm before 1977 then you were issued a prohibited license.
>>
>>386500743
Kolibri probably.
>>386501278
Possession and Acquisition License, Canadian firearms license. Guns here are divided between Non-Restricted, Restricted, and Prohibited, and people often differentiate between a PAL, RPAL, and PPAL to reflect what class of firearms you're allowed to own. Up to RPAL is easy to get provided you're patient, sane, and have no criminal record, getting a Prohibited endorsement is effectively impossible.
NR = most shotguns and rifles, excluding some that scare dumb liberal like the AK, FAL, G3, AUG, Street Sweeper, SPAS-12, etc. which are all prohib
R = General handguns, all AR15s, a few other compact rifles and shotguns
P = Small pistols or pistols in .25 or .32, full-autos, cut-down rifles and shotguns, a bunch of specifically named guns including the ones I mentioned above, some other stuff
None of it makes logical sense, but that's what the shitheads in charge wrote.
>>
>>386476695
It's role is as a hunting handgun, which it excels at.

>>

Only if you're a psychopath. But really, by entertainment I mean hunting and target shooting, I even stated it somewhere ITT.

I like Deagle aesthetics, often use it in games. In video games it usually fills the niche of a very powerful and accurate weapon, which is a fun niche.

>>
>>386501975
Yup. Re-fucking-tarded.
I remember a little while back now there was an internal memo leaked or released discussing their perceived issues regarding firearms classification that needed to be addressed.
TL;DR, a whole bunch of utter bullshit and everything was a total non-issue. For one thing they expressed concern about the High Standard Model 10, solely because it's a semiauto bullpup shotgun. They even acknowledged at the same time that it's already restricted and barely any are in the country at all (I think they said like 20 are registered in total), but that they wanted it banned. Or to at least ban the bullpup stock for it, in spite of the fact that no aftermarket stocks exist for the 10 to replace it, which they know. And the gun is even pretty shitty anyways, but this is what they get paid taxpayer money to do.
>>
>>386502591
It fills the roll of handcannon because in all reality it's basically a modern big-bore revolver, only better than most revolvers in that with .50AE you can hold seven shots instead of six and reloading is faster.
>>
>>386502741
Guess going through Guns Digest and circling the banned weapons wasn't a good idea then.
>>
>>386456067
Actually, what made 10mm popular was the FBI wanting a bigger round but being unable to get funding to buy a bunch of .45 pistols because the US Army was right in the midst of phasing out the 1911 for the M9, so they just bought 10mm pistols and had manufacturers create light loaded 10mm ammo designed to mimic the performance of standard .45 ACP.
>>
>>386499657
Ordnance Board probably did sabatoge it. They were too invested in their cash cow the M14 and would do anything to make sure it remains the standard issue rifle.

Pistols were an invention for cavalry, they were designed to be fired one handed, from horseback.
